Purpose of Plebe Summer
The purpose of Plebe Summer is to lay the foundation of the Academy's four-year professional development curriculum. At the conclusion of summer training, each Plebe class shall:
Be indoctrinated in the traditions of the Naval Service and the Naval Academy;
Understand basic military skills and the meaning behind them;
Appreciate the high standards and obligations inherent in service as a Midshipmen and Naval Officer;
Be dedicated to excellence in a competitive atmosphere that fosters leadership, teamwork, character, and a passion for "winning;"
Appreciate the importance of mental, moral, and physical toughness in all aspects of duty and service; and
Be prepared to execute the rigorous academic year routine.
About USNA
As the undergraduate college of our country’s naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy.
They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.
To even be selected to attend any military academy is an accomplishment itself

Everybody thinks their class had the last "real" plebe summer/plebe year but even with more restrictions they find a way to keep it hard. My dad was '72, I am '01 and my brother is '04. We swapped a lot of stories over the years and it has not changed that much. However no classes after 2005 or so will ever know the suffering of a Plebe summer without air conditioning in Bancroft Hall. You step out of a cold shower and are sweating again by the time you are dressed.
Oh what Memories! I can say with pride: "BEEN THERE - DONE THAT!" Even at 67 - I still remember my Army Induction. It was NOT Fun!. Yet I remember the experience with a certain fondness. I became a Soldier. A Flight Lieutenant. A leader of MEN. It is not easy. That is why it is called WORK! And EVERYTHING in the Military is WORK! The only thing worse than being Soldier? Is to never have been Soldier.
Sorry maybe I misunderstanding your rank structure in your country. You say you were a Flight Lieutentntant but also a soldier? How does that work?

I I served with some of them who graduated from the military academies and most of them are overrated for sure .

As a Marine Officer I'm happy to state that aside from maybe some higher ranking brass (idk about them) none of us professionals ever gave a shit and few academy grads even wore their rings. Things equalize (if that's the right word) quite a bit after TBS and IOC.

Yeah! The thing that I think will help you the most is getting your application in as soon as possible. You never know exactly what the admissions board is looking for but submitting really early will increase your chances of getting in.

@@everette_greenberg2516 that is incorrect. Turning in time doesn't affect chances. Get as many noms as possible, 1400+ SAT, show leadership in club activities, try to keep all As or at least a weighted 4.0, and do very well in varsity athletics. Show interest through summer seminar and candidate weekend. Good luck. I'm going class of 2024

Unless they are coming from an active duty deployment they haven't sacrificed crap. They are just beginning the training process where they will be educated in equal opportunity, anti racism, sensitivity, women's rights, and maybe something about leading sailors in locating, closing with, and killing an enemy on the high seas.
Sacrifice? A lot of these people are simply living their dream

I’m currently doing all I can to attend this college because I want to be part of something bigger than myself, and my end goal is to become a Navy Seal. This is my dream. I will make it a reality. Graduating class of 2026 here I come.

@Anders Yankowski selection to the Teams is very strict with a high DOR (dropped on request). Takes more than completion of the USNA, you have to have put in your time with the regular Navy first. Everyone wants to be a Seal, very few are successful in completing all the training required.

I hope I get into the naval academy! I’m a rising sophomore right now in high school and I hope to be class of 2027 in the naval academy. If I don’t get into the naval academy I would go to college on a rotc scholarship. I want to become a fighter pilot in the navy.

Their shoes are getting wet during the fire training. Do they get two pairs so they have a dry pair to use later? Those won’t be dry for a day. Or do they just have to continue on in wet shoes after the fire training until they dry?

They all just graduated and got their assignments. I hope that they will rely on the CPOs for their information on how things operate and crew members in their departments. I told my son-in-law that before he went to his sub.

If you want to be a marine and go to Naval Academy do you do the same stuff as them?
You do a program at the end called leatherneck. It’s a 4 week process in Quantico Virginia. Hope this helps!

All indoctrination programs are laughable these days. Your enlisted bootcamp was probably much harder.

@@myownspiritlevel There's two aspects of "hard" one is the learning/intensity curve which makes USMC bootcamp hard. Then there is that level of hard which only those who are both very fit and have extremely high aptitude can handle -- that's Naval Academy hard. Any of the latter would likely do well in any bootcamp, but Plebe Summer is just the start after which it does NOT necessarily get easier.
If I had a choice between doing bootcamp ten times or four years at the Academy, I would choose the Academy but not because it would be the easier of the two. In my experience it wasn't.
Btw, while I did only go through bootcamp once, I did graduate as platoon honor man, so my comparison is not entirely hypothetical.
@@treebeardtheent2200 There’s academically “hard,” there’s physically “hard,” and there’s mentally “hard.”The Naval Academy used to have all three. If you pick an easy major, then it only has two. If you’re in great shape and pick an easy major, then it is all easy. It is not what it was. Hell, it’s not even worth a regular commission anymore. It’s no better than NROTC or OCS, but at least those people aren’t self-deluded into thinking they’re elite hotshots. 😝

My favorite part is when everyone had to get their hair in regs. The look on the girls face was great.
Everything is nice and chill up to and including the taking of that first oath, but then they get embraced by Mother B and Plebe Summer Begins!
I recall four days when the temperature topped 104° F with over 90% humidity during my plebe summer.
I was back at the Academy after my Youngster cruise, in the basement when the screaming at '82 started. It shook me to the core.

This is essentially their boot camp I suppose. I know they aren’t showing everything so I’d imagine they’re more intense off camera.
So for anyone that’s in and/or has been through the Academy, once the Pleb Summer is over, you’re essentially in a student status or are you still in a boot camp style phase?
I’ve also wondered that after graduation do you go through OTS or are you getting all of that over with during your four years of schooling?
Every day is bad until your class does the Herndon Monument climb, when you are no longer plebes.

These days, there are tons of people that have things handed to them because of quotas.
This looks like an more strict version of summer camp in my opinion. Looks pretty chill compared to the Army or Marines too. Yep I’ll take navy all the way. Also if you actually do what there showing at 12:54 this pretty awesome. Not a Drill instructor yelling in your face the whole time.

Short for “plebeian”, meaning of lower social class, a commoner; because it’s the lowest level in the academy. Just one of the many unique terms you will find at USNA!

Its crazy how in hell week Navy Seals run approximately 200 miles and that's from Sunday to Friday.
As a firefighter in the civilian sector i can’t help but laugh at the sight of 10 people on a line
I went through (enlisted) navy bootcamp with a firefighter in our division. I went ahead and asked him about it. He said the ammount that we covered it was a joke but also that firefighting shipboard is simply a different ballgame from firefighting ashore... this isnt something i can really speak to, but it was interesting to hear that at the time.

You need to have a Bachelor's degree to become an officer in any branch, but going to the academy is just one way to become commissioned. There are other routes, such as going through ROTC at an affiliated college, or earning your degree elsewhere and then going to Officer Candidate School.
Just wait til the summer humidity hits and they’re running 10 miles a day. They will drop like flies.

What's the difference between naval academy and navy bootcamp?
The academy trains officers for the navy and Marine corps. Navy bootcamp trains enlisted for the navy
It's the birthplace for Ensings lol
Bootcamp is longer and for enlisted recruits.
fried rice Bootcamp is for enlisted personnel, it’s 8 weeks long. Naval Academy is for officers and is 4 years long. The academy trains you how to be an officer but also makes you earn your degree.
Boot Camp teaches you how to be a sheep. The academy teaches you how to be a shepherd.
The actual officers and civilians take it easy on them, while the upperclassmen fans enlisted are not the most pleasant...

What were those arms on the table during chow that was shown? Our Firsties would have eaten our heads like blueberry muffins if we did that. 😁 Congrats for all who survived Plebe Summer.
lol, I was thinking the same thing, we were only allowed to sit on the first 4 inches of the edge of our seat and had to sit straight up and keep our hands by our side while chewing. God help you if you take too big of a bite and are still chewing when the squad leader asks you to rattle off your rates.

Poor example of rifle drill by the cadre. Looks like the Marines need to do some remedial instruction for the upper class. Doc, class of 1991.
@Jim Shorts it's not a flex, rifle work incorrectly is disrespectful.
@Jim Shorts at least he can say he attended Annapolis, can you? If you don't learn things correctly during instruction, your whole platoon or class pays for it. If you look sloppy during drill, its called "Lack of Military Bearing". It was a poor example by classmen that should know better.

I sold my ‘86 class ring on eBay for $1800. I just couldn’t be a part of such a sham anymore. The place needs to be shut down. ROTC is a better value and produces better officers.
The quality of the academy has really 'sunk' since our time at that once proud school. SAD....!

@@Camolicious223 if I could I woulda done naval academy instead of enlisted anytime, the academy does more, learns more, and has more motivated people, maybe if I decide to become an officer and still of age and I get my recommend then I would switch from enlisted and join the academy.
Also it’s weird how this is. In boot camp when we have our Dixie cup on we salutes by having our pointer and middle touching the bottom right of the Dixie cup rather then our eyebrows.
