- During Variety’s Actors on Actors chat, Michael Douglas and Benicio del Toro compared the acting advice they received early in their careers and Douglas claimed Steven Spielberg stopped him from receiving a best actor award for HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra” at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
“The rumor was that I was sort of favored for the best actor award and that he put the kibosh on that because it was an HBO film,” said Douglas.

Douglas hit the nail on the head.
Del Toro takes the audience into him, just as Nicholson and Penn do as well.
Love these actors!
And Michael Madsen or Berlin in money heist, even if they are not so good. Is the timing.
Also, Ralph Bellamy.
Glad to see Benicio's handsomness is still going strong in 2019.
Francy Fumagalli he is one handsome bastard ...
He really is! ❤
loool
don't worry it is impossible to be gone
Thanks ❤
Benicio is so underrated. He is incredible in Sicario
@@Largentina. That is not only irrelevant but incorrect. Benicio has one Oscar win and one more nomination and only a single globe nomination,One he won.19 years ago. That's just nuts. BAFTA-voters get it though, three noms there.
He is a big star but deserves better roles and to be an actor everybody knows,he should be payed like an A-lister. So I would say he is frustratingly underrated concidering his substantial resume and talent. PS. Great, the asshole who said Benny has won two oscars and two globes ( what?) removed his comment so it looks like this is my response to Benicio being incredible in Sicario, which he of course is...ah Well, fuck it.
agreed
He's the best at what he does
Underrated to the general public and casual moviegoers. To the people that really love movies know hes one of the best. Let Dwayne Johnson be the movie star in one dumb movie after another just in it for the money. Benicio is a serious actor and carefully chooses the roles he plays, I'd much rather have him stay like he is. He has so many great movies, Snatch, The Hunted, Fear and Loathing, Way of the Gun, The Fan, Usual Suspects, Traffic, Swimming With Sharks ...
Hes incredible in everything. Even that godawful star wars movie he was in. Lol
Benicio can draw me into a character so completely that I forget its him. Truly gifted.
Benicio del Toro is just🔥🔥
Saw a comment saying he’s like the Latin Brad Pitt and I just can’t unsee it
@@alexman378 When he was younger, yes, he did looked like Brad.
From Puerto Rico territory of the USA sending a big hug and my admiration to Benicio del toro ❤
Benicio Del Toro has next level control with every move, with his characters
@@shrisub881 Racist and nationalist. This shows how ignorant of a stereotype you are. Your hate talk shows how cheap you and those who grew you up are.
Two legendary Actors alive in one room being real. Priceless.
Both star in the same film too
I hope you have a box a Kleenex handy.
It's rather incredibly how Michael has grown into looking exactly like his father Kirk, another acting legend from the same family.
Well, they are distantly related.
Strong genes...
Did anyone notice the ALMOST UNCANNY MOMENT at 15:40 when Benicio and Michael both moved a bit to relax their sitting posture-just like mirror image? It seems like they are in sync with each other, and by the way, they are sort of. Because they both showed so much mutual admiration and respect for their crafts from the beginning. BEST "Actors on Actors" I'VE EVER SEEN.
Great analogy 👍🏻
Benicio Del Toro can do anything!! He is the greatest!! I love his movies. One thing , because there are many, that I love about him is how he engages himself into his character. Every character he plays is truly authentic. He is so deserving and entitled to all the accolades and successes he receives. In my book, he would win an Oscar every time for everything!! His emotion and passion are ever present on and off screen. I am confident in saying that he is the greatest actor , person in decades. Hands down by far the best. What you get from Benicio Del Toro is solid acting not fluff and stuff. You get raw acting natural. That is another reason I love him so much. I love you, Benicio Del Toro!!
benicio del toro never ages, i'm infatuated! 😍😍
..whereas Douglas looks like his mother five years after she died.
Iseenthefuture lmao
we all are
Here here
Michael Douglas in "the Game" , is a performance that stayed with me for many many years
legend
Traffic is still one of my all-time favorite movies. Both of these actors are brilliant in it and Don Cheadle too. I've been a huge fan of Benicio's and fascinated by his acting from the first time I saw him on screen. I can only say this about a handful of actors and actresses.
Yes
Benicio in Sicario is just sublime !
amen
Benicio del Toro is just so cool with his acting. I was surprised to hear him state that he feels that he is rushing it. Michael Douglas is just incredible with a distinguished body of work behind him. Just a great interview to watch. Bravo
Benicio possess undeniable Boricua Swag!!! Todos que son Boricua digan WEPA!!!!🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
These 2 legends are so humble & so encouraging towards each other it's sweet. I love how Douglas still find new challenges to step up his game despite his impressive career
I could’ve watched six hours of this. Both fascinating men/artists.
I love when Michael gets honest about Spielberg
Sr. Beni del Toro, respect!
both great guys on screen
Michael's journey into comedy was a great choice. The chemistry in Kominsky Method is special. This episode of Actors on Actors is a gem.
Fascinating conversation!!!
I’m in love with BDT
Thanks ❤❤❤
Del Toro is brilliant. He really is...
Half an hour of two amazing actors telling each other how great they are!!! Love it :D
6:20 - Well done, Mr Editor
This interview has enough gravel to pave my driveway.
Brian Spenst
What does gravel mean?
@@LuLu-sy8oz this is a saying in America. Some people have a lower voice that sounds like they have small rocks in their throat. Gravel is a type of rocks used for driveways and roads. So people whose voices have that grinding sort of growl are said to have a gravelly voice. Thus my very witty joke.
Brian Spenst
Well player sir...
Greetings from Orange County, California
Douglas has that swagger/style that is just so compelling! I love seeing him!
Michael Douglas is a legend but Benicio del Toro is something else. Bravo mi Boricua!
Benicio is great, but get real. Few actors have had the career Michael Douglas has had.
@@BradleyPaulValentine yep, thanks (in some ways) to dad
@@BradleyPaulValentine Douglas has had the better career and del toro has given better performances, been in better movies and given us more iconic characters. Douglas is a great moviestar, del toro is a great actor.
@@BradleyPaulValentine you're talking about quantity while what's being referred to is quality. Benicio's ability to deconstruct himself and build a whole new person is something almost innate and absolutely rare. And no rando in the YT comment section is going to take that away from him.
@@mermaidtingzzz I completely agree. Michael may have appeared in a lot more movies but he doesn't have the range Benicio has. Every movie he has acted in is pretty much the same character, whether it's comedy or drama. The only exception is probably Behind The Candelabra.
Benicio del Toro. Incomparable. This guy is a beast!
Michael Douglas. A legend who at the age of 75 is still getting excited (at 19:24) to explore new terrain like COMEDY ACTING!
LEARNING NEVER STOPS FOR A TRUE ARTIST.
Such an intelligent conversation, felt so good to watch these two. The amount of respect and heart-centeredness, wow! Thank you for this.
He's definitely a master of pacing and timing. That's a big part of his magic, how he draws you into him. The most fascinating actor I can think of.
Benicio is absolute Gold. Not enough credit given or movies made. Great to hear these humble self aware pets of Michael Douglas. Love this stuff!
Benicio is so sweet..Love him
Michael Douglas has such an amazing body of work as well. Both Benicio and him are top shelf.
Benicio still a smoke show. Good Lord.
Right!
Sicario is amazing. Love that film!
michael douglas is literally the one person that makes me hold on to my youth, what an absolute legend
You prob need to get a life man.
This was fabulous, we felt like a “fly on a wall,” watching this conversation not to mention we learned a little about both actors. Big fan of both!🎧 🎥
This was my most favorite actor to actor conversation to date. Thank you Mr. Benicio & Mr. Douglas for this segment which was too short to be honest. Thank you Variety for putting these 2 men in the same space. You done did good!!
Respect for both of these legends💜
Benicio is an incredible actor. I can listen to him talk for hours. His look is so interesting.
This was a fantastic interview. Truly talented actors. Love them both!
Benicio is 52 years old! Wow...
I love my beautiful fellow Boricua, Benicio! And Michael, wow, so glad he is still here. Amazing actors both. Bravo! ☺️🌹♥️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Leave it to our Boricua, Benicio, to find that wood for Mike to knock on {20:45} and be grateful...old school! Two of the best together**
Benicio is just gorgeous 😍
Micheal Douglas did some of the most intense adult thrillers. I wish he returned to that genre.
Michael Douglas' speaking voice is EVERYTHING! :)
I know I love thar NYer sounding accent.
The Traffic reunion ❤️
Michael Douglass looks better then me and I'm 32 years old. Benicio is so fun to watch I need to lookup more of his films. Things we lost in the fire k.gpt.so lost in his character.
Wow this was amazing. I only hope one day I can come close to the level of Benicio and Michael.
I really love Michaels voice, he was amazing in Don't Say A Word and him and Catherine are so cute together. Benicio was awesome in The Hunted. 🥺
These guys are both so handsome! Great pairing. Love them! Such great actors! I can't wait to see the next season of The Kominski Method!
I'm so glad to see Benicio del Toro getting more mainstream exposure. He always stood out to me. He is the sort of immersive actor perfect in diverse standalone originals. Kinda like the Michael Douglas carreer. Just think of classics like Traffic, Falling Down, Basic Instinct and War of the Roses- what sort of actor nowadays could pull something like that off? Let alone have opportunities like that? feckin Hollywood is just all about franchises now...although I gotta admit I am hoping on that third Sicario movie...
One of the things that marks Michael Douglas' career is his willingness, even enthusiasm, to take risks.
Benicio 🇵🇷 represent!
Amazing to see Michael looks just like a younger version of his dad. It's almost like an exact copy.
Benicio Del Toro is such a great actor
Two legends 🤗🤗
my benicio is back on spotlight! 😄

Great conversation between 2 excellent actors!
Benicio can split me in half.
This segment is my favorite thing on UA-cam
Benicio Del Toro has real presence in all his scenes. Hes incredibly absorbing to watch. You sympathise with his character even when they are dislikable.
Sempre arrasando Benício Del Toro!💝💝💝💝💝
Que Que?
I love the way they both get really involved in this, some facinating stuff.
TWO GREAT ACTORS. BOTH VERY VERY SKILLED. GREAT PAIRING.
Benicio we love you
Great actors always enjoyable to watch, and their humanity always visible.
Love that he referenced Wonder Boys. One of my favourite films.
love both these guys
Two great men sharing. So insightful
These two in the same movie again? Yes, please.
outstanding interview!✔💯✔💯
Great interview, unique questions. Two heavyweights. Cheers guys!
Very interesting! And inspiring/opening new perspectives (after the obligatory, first, mutual pleasantries). Such a great idea of putting the two so knowledgeable and experienced actors/individuals/personalities in coversation one-to-one, without any intermediary/go-between. Big thank you, respect and love to everyone involved!
This is great, two legends talking their craft
When I see Michael Douglas, always think of Kirk Douglas and how phenomenal he was, Paths of Glory and Kubrick having Douglas walk through the French trenches, sublime.
really interesting conversation. especially the bit at the end with the tv v. movies, and digital v. film.
Love the honesty of this incredible actors because they can, they both have their own opinions, moments an so on.
Listening and watching two great actors speaking how they play different characters in movies.
beniciooooo 🔥🔥🔥
Two great actors
Love seeing how generous these two are with each other. Two of my favorite actors.
Admire both of you, Gentlemen. And will never thank you enogh for the moments of pure sincere beauty of your craft.
I greatly admire these two... i haven't even watched the video, just wanted say that.
Benicio! Love him. He needs to work more.
Excess Baggage: The most under-rated rom-com I've ever seen: 5.3 on IMDB; It's at least a 6.3. I'd give it a 6.8.
Great moments...like cheesecake.
I love Michael Douglas I could sit with him and talk all day!
Kool interview...Benicio need to come to tv n make his sicario character a tv series. Michael Douglas "money never sleeps" Wallstreet. 👏
GREAT IDEA!
benicio he's just a powerful actor and presence
Wonderful thank you!!!!!
Benicio in a Comedy would be golden!!!!
@James Darmor Snatch has comedy but it's not a comedy.
@James Darmor Drama? Lol why would anyone call it a drama.
@James Darmor Its a crime caper with dark comedy. Dumb and Dumber is a comedy...
@James Darmor Why cant you understand the difference between a comedy movie and a movie with comedy? Scream 4 had comedy but was it a comedy? Lmao the movie IT had one liners the whole time from that little kid making jokes but was it a comedy? Thanks, debate over.
Didnt want this to end . Michael douglas shared amazing insights, so glad he is still going strong. brilliant actor he is. As for benecio..
being one of the actor who never make noise for their work to be seen...& he'll never need to..because his acting is so iconic that ur brain effortlessly remembers his characters and dialogues. its not recommended to us but we 'search' for it. one of the best & handsomest actor of our times, finest the world has to offer. i always wanted to see him in some jane austen type of lead - he perfectly fits the description for that tall, dark, hansome character. someone please do that!
Michael Douglas is a born in jerz man his dad is still going too that's great
ahhhhh Michael, what a legendary actor like his father was, love & own all his movies back in 80s & 90s on bluray/DVDS , all of them GREAT!
