- “Homecoming” star Julia Roberts and “Escape at Dannemora” lead Patricia Arquette sat down for a chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors. Roberts and Arquette breakdown the fourth wall, revealing the secrets of their craft.
“If I turn around, and I see you, and you don’t need to be on this set, I’m going to punch you in the face,” said Arquette, when telling Roberts about a nude scene she did for a David Lynch film.
The duo participated in a long talk about working as an actress in Hollywood.

Sure enough Arquette would be a terrific talk show host. Her intelligent questions, voice modulation, empathy and that reassuring laughter; totally winning combination.
Many thanks Variety!
Empathy is a big one. You can tell Patricia has a lot of it!
Whoever put these two together should be promoted
princepeterwolf it felt like a reading session full of shade lol and humor.
Thats true
True
Why?
princepeterwolf absolutely
When i watch Julia Roberts, i find it impossible not to smile whenever she smiles.
Sheep
Yes. Her smile is contagious. 😊
Same
@D Leo 😂and you know this how?
She's got the most beautiful face and lips
Patricia’s smooth sexy voice and manner combined with Julia’s giddiness and goofball charm go so well together.
Does anyone love Patricia Arquette's voice? I could listen to it for hours.
Hopingover Leavesinfall love!
She has this lovely, calm and motherly kind of voice. Love to listen her speak
I am so in love with her. So in love!
Marijuana+ashkenaze vibes ahah
I rewatch medium all of the time. I mostly put it on before bed and fall asleep listening to her talk.
I got this feeling that Julia's reaction and expression towards Patricia is so genuine. She really is interested in what Patricia has to say....so down-to-earth :))
I’m loving their chemistry. You can really feel the knowledge and respect for each other.
As a writer, this was so informative! I just thought it would be a 'love fest' where they applaud everyone because it's what's expected. I'm glad this wasn't like that.
Glad they paired these two! Both are acting royalty in my book.
mine too
‘90s acting royalty
Every time I listen to Patricia Arquette, I'm always astounded by the levels of discussion she can have with another person. She is so smart and thoughtful.
She is so smart and insightful. She would be a great interviewer.
she is a gem.
"I'm just a girl ... standing in front of Patricia Arquette ... telling her I love her."
I would love to see Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman at a roundtable together. I feel like they're sort of "Hollywood sweethearts" from the same era and they would share a lot of very interesting perspectives as well.
that would be amazing.
No
My three fav actresses yes please
I think Patricia's family dynamic on Medium was the closest to a real family I have ever seen depicted on TV. Julia and I have the same favourite classic films, both with AMAZING female actors.
Patricia Arquette is such an amazing actress. I like how she always chose roles that were challenging to her somehow (focusing more on what the scripts meant to her in her evolution as an actress than on how much money she could potentially make). I loved her in "Lost Highway", "Stigmata" and "Medium" (my favorite show ever). And I can't wait to see her in "Escape At Dannemora" and "The Act".
So when Medium was on back in the day, I loved it. But just recently I discovered a channel on cable called Start TV on my Xfinity/Comcast cable. Medium is on twice a day and I've started rewatching all the episodes. They usually play 2 episodes a day and I DVR them, so when I get home from work I watch them. It's great to rewatch shows at a different age.
Loved her in true romance. Also i still have dream warriers in VHS. I remember watching her in elm 3 and thinking she's going to be a great actress.
Patricia carried the Act.
Loved her in medium, i have all the seasons on dvd! Great actress miss Patricia Arquette 🥰
can we have directors on directors?
What a great idea!
Great idea that would be interesting with all the references
Julianne you're soooooo right!!!!!
Imagine a Tarantino and Spielberg video, Scorsese and Nolan, Eastwood and
Coppola.
Great question!
Patricia is giving me a lot of personal style. LIFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
CigalASMR the shoooooooeeees the glassesssssssss the pantsuittttttt
She’s is ‘giving it’ effortlessly here so good.
CigalASMR YES!!! 🎉
Substance in Hollywood! You bring it Patricia...
DAMN, Patricia knows her craft so well!!! I love her!!
She's fearless and real. I love her, too!
She's smart
Patricia is so still. She looks so cute so you expect more upbeat energy but she's so still and wise. Love her. Julia is always beautiful. Love these 2 together.
Julia meh. Patricia hell yes.
I love how they're so open and receptive of each other's questions. Two very talented, very eloquent amazing women. Enjoyed watching them!
I always enjoy actors interviewing each other. They let their guard down immediately.
Variety should really consider "Arquette on Actors." Patricia is utterly brilliant.
she is so authentic. Not a phony bone in her !
Julia stole my heart here. Oh my gosh. Patricia is a bawse. I wanna be her when I grow up. It's so amazing to see the successful women in the industry be so supportive of each other. This format is truly, a wonderful treat for us the viewers, to understand about the mechanisms of their art. Just wonderful.
I've always admired acting. I do think it is a worthy art and craft that is underrated.
Their conversation is the equivalent of two best friends meeting for brunch...love it! Excellent pairing...
Wow! It is the first time I've seen Julia Roberts in any type of interview and now feel that I've seen/met Julia Roberts. Such a pleasure to experience these women sharing their experiences in the life of acting. Patricia became clearer as she asked & answered questions & responded to compliments. At the end, with the audition/wet hair draining stories, I just laughed as if I was enjoying the sharing of friends. Wonderful! Thank you for the pairing and thank you, Patricia Arquette and Julia Roberts for really relating. The commonalities and praises you each expressed led to my feeling very comfortable and the recipient of that rare "realness" that comes even more, it would appear, with two female actors who are there by choice and enjoying the experience. THANKS!
Best line: ‘and now we’re just rad 51 year olds with naturally blonde hair.’ Awesome close to a great program.
Patricia Arquette is indeed such a brilliant actor.
1. Their looks are giving me life lol. Arquette...that red dress, the silver platforms, the glasses, the hair....GURL! Roberts...those black plants with the trouser stripes, those patent leather shoes...super cute for her. 2. I find it so fascinating how at any point in life you can find your “groove.” Patricia has been working for many years, but these last few years, IMO, she’s really produced output that has grabbed people, quite a few years after her siblings (not that that matters at all), and it’s “her time” so to speak, but I find her artistic timeline so interesting as well as inspiring. 3. Fabulous conversation between these two powerhouse actors. Thanks Variety, I really do love this content.
jabrown1978
Yea, no.
I love what both of them are wearing as well. I would wear both of these ensembles depending on my mood lol.
Pretty sure Julia was crowned "America's Sweetheart" long before the movie by that name was released. She's very modest.
I think this is my favorite "Actors on Actors" pairing so far. Fabulous!!!
I usually don't enjoy the questions between actors, but these two women are real.
Patricia was fabulous in the TV series 'Medium' and the chemistry she shared with Jake Weber who played her husband was something else, it was as though they were married in real life.
Yes was I just thinking that the other day the most believable married couple by far on TV ever playing people who love each other but have a normal ups and downs in marriage .
my heart broke when Joe died...and still today when I see Jake Weber I go: Joe💜💜💜💜💜
Vendela: You speak my heart. Now that Start TV runs two episodes of Medium a day, I make sure to catch the finale after each cycle (even tho I still cry, I sure don't mind pretending to be Patricia during that amazing hour-long,lol, kiss)! Anyway, what I initially wanted to say (& I do hope you will respond) is that I, personally have never had the pleasure of seeing anything else with Jake Weber in it. Alas. Sad face.
Made us feel we were her, married to him!
@@JayJay-wg5ex Yes.
medium was an extraordinary show i enjoyed every minute of it ❤
Such intelligent and interesting women. From another era. Brings up some nostalgia. I wish more people had this kind of class and thoughtfulness now.
Actors on Actors...YES🔥🥳💯...This is my favourite time of year...Although I have no interests in acting ever, I thoroughly enjoy listening/watching each conversation, learning how their passion became their career and/or their unique process of preparations to shooting to promoting...One day, I think I would like to be apart of the entertainment industry in some capacity, so I always enjoy learning different perspectives😊 Lovely chat with amazing people too!
K Lof agreed! Love these interviews and the artistry behind the work, so fascinating!
This was one of the best interviews I have ever seen! A proper, respectful, conversation where both contributed. Kudos to both actors for their 'talk show' skills (as well as an amazing catalogue of acting experience). Shout out too to the person who picked them for this show, you did a good thing, it was a joy to watch. Thank you.
The “actors on actors” that I need it, and I didn’t know. I could watch them talking for ever.
9:00-11:00: Julia Roberts: I’m just walking in a path that #BarbraStreisand has hacked out with a machete, so to be the gardener that’s picking some weeds that have come up since these incredible women before me have made a path for all of us...
I love how eloquent her turn of phrase was at this particular moment, so awesome.
Julia does great metaphors in her interviews
Uu
Most won’t pick up on that, but I did
I love Patricia Arquette. She's magnificent.
I love both of their energies and to see them together I could not look away! two stunning awesome kick ass ladies. I love how they talked about experiences rather than just their processes. It was more insightful.
My goodness, Patricia Arquette is amazing. Julia Roberts is amazing, too. They are both so different and so amazing. Thank God for talented female actors.
This is my favourite thing that variety does
I have never been able to watch full episodes of these as I havent been that interested but I felt myself being pulled into this conversation and actually wanting to listen. Love these ladies! Amazing content.
Julia roberts is the definition of forever young. Just incredible
Julia looks exactly the same. I'm so glad she hasnt done anything to her face. She's gorgeous.
If she looks the same it's because she HAS done something to her face.
@@perfumistaful I can't tell that She has. If so well done. I mean she has wrinkles she just overall looks the same
She looks amazing. I thought she hasn’t done anything to her face, but then I saw her neck and how older it looks compared to her face. Now I am not so sure.
She probably hasn't done much except basic upkeep. Her forehead wrinkles appropriately, her cheekbones look normal, her mouth isn't stretched or puffy. She looks naturally beautiful.
@@sheresejames-grow1779 so true
Love Patricia Arquette❤️
I'm almost 13 mins in the interview. I am really enjoying Julia & Patricia talking & interviewing each other.
They are an interesting contrast that complemented each other!
So much talent between these two. I just love to hear actors ruminate about their craft and ask each other questions, subjects they find interesting. And the respect is so palpable. I have favorites from their careers that I can rewatch and still enjoy. So thankful I found this ! YAY
Whoever had the idea to make this interview happen God bless you!
Julia, I am so very proud of you for asking about True Romance. That film is forever imprinted on my memory banks. Also, because a small portion was actually filmed in Detroit. .
Patricia (and her wonderful teeth) forever
Yes!! I totally agree! She is of my generation, back when not everybody in America got braces. I love the character that teeth give people that you don't often see anymore. I actually miss it quite a lot. You can still see that though with European actors, which is nice. Some other actors with the similar teeth are JoBeth Williams (although hers are less noticeable in photos or maybe she's had them straightened) and David Bowie. There are others but they escape me now.
These two together is everything. Amazing chemistry.
Exceptionally good connection between these two - they are both at their best. Great interview.
Omg Julia Roberts and Patricia Arquette are my childhood Pretty Woman, Sleeping with the Enemy, The Pelican Brief Mystic Pizza,Step mom,My Best Friends Wedding, Erin Brocvich, Nightmare Elm street Part 3/ Stigmata which all in my movie collection, oh the memories..
Gosh, I love Patricia Arquette. What an inspired choice of these two together.
THAT WAS SO F ING FANTASTIC ,FROM START TO FINISH! WOW!
Why do I want to give Patricia Arquette a hug, Every time I see her...
I know what you mean!
Patricia Arquette needs to get her own talk show people!!! She is deep observant eloquent smart edgy dark and sweet all at once!! One of the best Actor on Actor.
I really like Patricia Arquette's work ethic and approach to working with a script.
SO cool that Julia mentioned "Now, Voyager." Bette Davis will always be at the top of my favorite actors.
Fallen Karma I LOVE me some Bette Davis and ALWAYS will.
@@tillyboos I watched Now Voyager recently and Bette is overly mannered with the way she speaks it is not natural and those watery eyes of hers all the time geesh. One of her worst actually. Now Norma Shearer would have been a great choice. I could totally see Shearer as charlotte and Mrs Miniver.
timerwolf700 Now Voyager is actually NOT one of my favorite Bette Davis movies. Those would be All About Eve and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, respectively. I just love her. She’s campy. However, she’s definitely an acquired taste. I, however, LOVE her. I love her exaggerated manner and her theatricality. And was she ever a TOUGH old broad. They don’t make em like Bette everyday.
Love actor on actors. Theres something very intimate and just casual about these two actors conversing and playing on each other's strengths and weaknesses as character. It all just seems organic. Its interesting!
Best Interwiew EVER! Love both of them. Patricia Aquette questions, so deep! And she and Julia seems so good together. This is History 😊
Julia Roberts is amazing. Patricia Arquette is amazing. I can't handle this video, really...
She's so right about being unemotional. She never seemed tied to it or the stress. She always stays out of the eye.
I remember now, why I love these two. They are authentic human beings.
Now, Voyager is one of my favorite films too. That answer made me love Julia even more.
the fact that Julia feels indebted to Patricia is so sweet and adrable
Patricia is the best actress out there! Icon.
Julia is such a timeless beauty ❤️
Patricia Arquette is one of my FAVORITE actresses. The characters she plays are so edgy, yet, she’s so DOWN TO EARTH. I love her for that. Love Julia Roberts too, but she’s very wholesome comparatively.
Patricia is a badass aries and fantastic actress.
Won’t be long before these 2 actresses team up on a project.
This is the first Variety Actors on Actors I've watched and I am overjoyed! What a great thing! To hear from such experienced actors, and their experiences...to see how normal and human they are (!) is just great. Well done! It's made me want to re-visit Homecoming - I just couldn't get into it the first time around...
Okay, I love that Roberts neck shows her age. As I look at my own body and struggle with the changes I see, I truly appreciate that I feel she is a beautiful woman, and allowing herself to age.
More of these two glorious woman together please, they are incredible and brilliant ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
I see Julia Roberts and I naturally click out of another video to watch this one.
Love them! I hope to age like these two women right here. They’re both so radiant.
Big crush on Pat Arquette 😜💗
Back off shes all mine.
Patricia u r all Gladiator, Queen, and all of Generation X.!!!!!
Patricia looks great loving the shades
YOU LOOK GREAT 😍😍
"Went to Disney? Are they gunna animate it?"
I love both these women. This is one of the most candid and informative Actors on Actors, I have seen.
Ooooh! So excited for this! I love both Julia & Patricia!
WOW Pure magic happening here ❤❤ love these 2 so much.
True Romance is my favorite movie
I like it how Patricia Flips it on everyone and makes it her show interviewing Julia
I love these conversations, much more real than interviews on talk shows & such
This is an Excellent Pairing!!!! The others are just too new to be doing this.
Strongly agreed
This was awesome! Love these two women! So glad they were paired together! Absolutely loved watching these two amazing, beautiful, and talented women have a chat! Thank you Variety!!
*The Queens of the 90's.*
I think these are both very charming women. And amazing actors. Julia Roberts has done some really fantastic work in her career. She deserves more accolades.
Now I have to back and re-watch half of all the movies and series they made.
Really nice to know where both are coming from since Julia is regarded more as a movie star. And Patricia a character actress.
I've never considered Patricia as just a character actress...
YES. I love the way she talks about her characters and her craft. I've always loved her and have always thought she was brilliant.
The best Variety video I have ever seen, a great pairing! Arquette is an amazing actress, I watched Escape at Dannemora and The Act and is difficult to believe that same actress has done both of them.
Loved how they ended this chat, so cool😊🇮🇪🍀
I wonder if Notting Hill was an accurate portrayal of Julia Roberts's life at the time. It seemed to be a commentary on celebrity, through a very jolly British lens, with both her and Hugh Grant playing up on the warped perception of their real life personalities, even though they gave very grounded performances.
Two of my favorite actors... this was a great one 🙌🏻
"..and now we're just rad 51 year olds with naturally blonde Hair."
"That's right."
(epic High Five)
Patricia icon of beauty
Ill fight you. I love her sexy teeth and those blues. 😍
Come on, you guys! I can't handle all these amazing conversations. So interesting!
Loved this interview SO much! :-)
Love to see female actors their age without Botox and fillers....they are natural and have real beauty. Amazing actors, love them.
It seems impossible that Julia isn’t doing a little something because she looks like time didn’t happen! To be honest, I don’t care either way. But if she is, man, I want the number of her doctor! She looks fantastic!
I think that is what well done not overly exagerated botox looks like. She looks like herself and natural enough.
There is plenty of Botox and fillers here. It’s just done very well. Just look at the foreheads. Compare the face to the neck. Patricia, I can’t speak for.
Like it's a sin to get a facelift. Power to them if it makes them feel good.
Rockfish 100% agree! I’de rather see a good lift than crazy filler face tho. But whatever makes them feel good.
