At the time, McDowell's was bigger. But Almirola's is the upset of the season. Reason being: McDowell has been running pretty well all year long. He's 17th in the normal points standings. That win was more a harbinger of decent consistency from the 34 than an earth shattering upset at this point (again, at the time, we couldn't have known that). Almirola is 27th. He's almost out of eligibility and won. He may have even saved his job. This is the 2nd biggest upset in the current format as far as points go at the time of winning. Buescher's Pocono win being the lone better one. (Not counting Spire's Daytona win, as they weren't eligible for the playoffs at the time)

This is what was intended when they made this format and it makes the season much more entertaining in my opinion. Like Eric said, any other year this is a good win in a contract year I think, but now its an underdog making the playoffs and having a chance to upset in the playoffs. Sure having the points championship was more of a true depiction of who 'won the season', but in my opinion this is more entertaining and thats what drives the sport

Drivers who enter the playoffs 10th-16th will never win the championship don't care how many years it goes. They almost always are out 1st or 2nd round and as they should be. They weren't in contention all season but because the format allows 16 teams the media will try and convince you that Aric Almirola winning is important because he'll get to be in the playoffs. Who cares. He will be eliminated in the 1st or 2nd round and it will not have mattered. His win is important more because he's never won in the cup series on a proper racetrack but they don't even mention that. Always about playoffs blah blah.

Sucks that I couldn’t hear the command, or even the engines firing up until they passed by in the turn
