I love you, man. You helped me fix my gas dryer and microwave too. UA-cam has saved me literally thousands of dollars on appliance and auto repairs in the last few years.
It could be any part of the defrost system or the wiring. You can test the heater and the defrost thermostat for continuity. The heater should have continuity or it is bad. The thermostat should have continuity when its cold, below the temp stamped on it, and no continuity when its warm. The other part of the system is the defrost timer. If you need more help please post the question along with your model number on our repair forum.
Hi, my evaporator accumulates a lot of ice. The defrost heater measures 22k Ohms, but when I run the Test Mode it doesn't get hot. The defrost thermostat also tested ok. Any suggestions? Thank you!
your video really helped me replace my defrost timer, thermostat, which didn't solve my problem so I changed my heater, only to find it was burned into, watching your video made my task easy. thank you
I have a GE side by side and I've replaced the thermostat/twin heater assembly and defrost timer. is one heater supposed to get hotter than the other or should they both glow the same?
i have a quick question, my fridge almost identical to the one in the video over freezes however when i turn the fridge off and let it unfreeze it works fine again and after a week or so it the evaporator freezes up again. does this symptom still apply to the defrost heater or could it be the wiring?
I have a Kenmore Elite fridge and there is ice build up in the freezer. I changed the defrost heater like in your video but it did not resolve the problem. I have tested the defrost heater, changed the thermostat and tested it. There doesn’t seem to be any problems but the defrost heater still won’t turn on. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for a good video illustration. I didn't know that it was the heating element that was the culprit tripping the house main power supply. When I disconnected it, no tripping occurred. Thanks to this video which helped me replaced the heating element on my Whirlpool side to side fridge freezer. My only comment is to be clear about the orientation of the heating element or does it matter?
Great Video. A fried of mine bought a similar model second hand but it kept tripping the power. They asked me to take a look and I was able to diagnose an earth on the defrost heater element. It looked like changing it was not going to be possible until I watched your video. I had suggested in the meantime that they run the fridge freezer with the defrost heater element disconnected. I did warn them that without it the evaporator coil would ice up pretty quickly and they would have to defrost it manually. (more trouble than its worth) I did power up the unit with the element disconnected but the compressor or either fan didn't start. The lights come on when the door is opened confirming power availability but no compressor or fans. Is there some sort of delay before the compressor starts after plug in? Or, am I looking at multiple faults with this unit. I only ask as I don't to spend a friend's hard earned coin on a new element for a fridge freezer that has multiple issues. It's a 6ED22PKFW01. I have the service manual but its print quality is very poor.
I apologize for the delayed response. It sounds like it may be a little complicated making sure it's only the one part bad in this unit. the heater circuits have gone faulty on my freezer... when the freezer starts defrosting it trips the fuse box switch. we recently disconnected the plug for the heater/sensors and it stopped the tripping issue but after 2 days the radiator had completely frozen up and the fan was unable to pull air through it. On the heater circuit (temp sensors and the heater element), what is the most likely component that is causing the fuse box to trip?
***** The defrost system is made up of the defrost control, thermostat and heater. Of the 3 the heater is the most likely to trip a breaker but all the parts in the system should be tested. You can post the problem along with the model and serial number of the appliance on our repair forum. The techs can help you trouble shoot the problem.
I have looked at a lot of videos. This one was really good. Mine got to where when the ice was ready to eject it would make like a grinding noise. Sometimes lasting a few min.up to sometimes 10 min or so. At any rate I got a idea as to what to do.
I hav this same type frigde & my freezer at the bottom the drain hole freezes up & it freezes all inside the bottom were basket is..defroster seems like it works..ive replaced thermostat on it..plz help
This is a drain hole you can put some warm water through it to clear any ice build up. It should drain into the pan down by the compressor. If you think the drain is clogged by something other that ice you can carefully clear it with a small wire.
Depending on how long you installed this part it can take roughly 24 to 48 hours before the fridge will start cooling. Are you able to hear the fans and the compressor running at all?

+Memo Martinez No problem, if you cannot find the leak you can also post the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem.

Fantastic instructor and good video production. A remarkable (no bull) presentation.
I'm pretty sure that this is my problem with my Kenmore cold spot refrigerator, I just purchased the part and now I'm going to give this a shot

Do you have to wait until the freezer (Condenser) to defrost completely before you replace the part?

Thank you so much! Great tutorial! It was cake!
You are very welcome!
If a defrost heater has continuity can it still be bad?
Generally NO, but it must be open circuit or infinity resistance reading when testing with the outer body.
can I test the heater for continuity without removing the heater element?
Thanks in advanced
+regowire You should be able to test it for continuity without taking it out. Just unplug it and test at the lead ends.

What a pain in the butt to replace this heater.
How easy it would be to damage the coil
