The song that changed music. No joke, this was the cultural shift that ushered in what we think of as 90s music. When you talk to people who were in HS at the time, this is like our moonlanding moment, everyone remembers when they first heard this song. If I had to pick my top five 90s tracks, this would be in there. You guys should also check out Where Did You Sleep Last Night from Nirvana Unplugged.

This was back when MTV was Music TeleVision. This was also before the days of "The Internet". No one except for folks up in Seattle saw this coming. It just seemingly came out of no where and seriously changed culture, not just the music. This song has to be listed up there with some of the most impactful songs of all time, whether folks like it or not.

As a 50-year old white dude I am impressed by your willingness and eagerness to appreciate music outside of your comfort zone, and clearly before your time. The song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the anthem of Generation X. I'm a Gen-xer myself and when the video for this song came out, it kinda blew my mind. I was seeing this dude in a kiddie shirt at a high school that had cheerleaders in black dresses with tattoos all over them. Well guys, you’ve now really stepping into my era. Since you’ve opened the box to one of the great culture shifts - grunge/alternative rock - some suggestions/requests for the other “most influential” bands & songs. I’m sure there’ll be others I’ve missed , but these are the ones that really define the era for me...
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (The MTV Unplugged performance). In Bloom.
Pearl Jam - Jeremy. Alive. Even Flow.
Soundgarden - Spoonman. Black Hole Sun. Outshine.
Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike (this is a bonus...it’s a combo of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden band members)
Alice In Chains - Man in the Box. Would. Rooster.
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush. Big Empty. Interstate Love Song.
Smashing Pumpkins - Today. Cherub Rock. Tonight, Tonight.
Rage Against the Machine - (you got them 😉)
Feel free to pick and choose. 🎸🥁🎤🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

I whole heartedly 100% percent agree with every band and song on this list. I absolutely second everything @Crimson Wring said, I could not come up with a better list myself. just spot on really. Maybe I would add Vasoline to the STP list and Rear View Mirror to the Pearl Jam list, but that is me being nit picky and adding two other songs I really like personally.
