The Odin 2 is still an incredible choice for top-tier emulation, but the Retroid Pocket 5 has really impressed me-it holds its own remarkably well! We’re definitely spoiled for choice with so many great handhelds out there. Which one would you choose as your go-to emulation device? Let me know!
Great video Kei, can’t wait to get my hands on the RP5. I had been tempted by the RPmini, but the larger 4:3 content on the RP5 is a real step up without compromising the overall compact design.
Good choice! The Mini is good but yeah as I mentioned it's mainly for people who want portability above all or 4:3 content solely. The RP5 is a very good balance.
The RP5 is going to be the only device I need for everything but high end emulation / PC games, cannot wait. I hope the Odin 2 Portal screen will be just as fantastic. People's minds are going to be blown! Sure, you won't get linux support but you get all the power in the world and an even more comfortable device (that won't be considerably bigger than a regular Odin 2, apparently!), plus the 120hz screen will allow for retro emulation with black frame insertion!
Great review, thanks! Before the announcement of the RP5 and RP Mini, I had actually been waffling between picking up the Odin 2 or the RP4P; obviously Odin had the performance and better ergonomics, but it was also a fair bit more expensive than the RP4P. The Odin 2 Mini was then announced and released, but it didn't really appeal to me all that much due to the smaller (compared to Odin 2) screen and the arguably worse ergonomics. Flash forward to the announcement of the RP Mini and RP5... my indecision has saved me! Had the Mini been a 4 inch screen that might have won it for me, but I felt I would appreciate the larger screen of the 5. I decided to wait for some reviews to come out for the Mini before I made my choice, and for a while I figured maybe I would just stick to my RG556. Then AYN decided to further muck things up by announcing the Odin Portal! I was actually on Indiegogo staring down the Odin Portal Base Super Early Bird... but the price tag gave me pause. That and after considering the dimensions, it seemed a little too big; I mean I would probably love the 7 inch screen, but the thing was gonna be in the Switch or Steam Deck size category. After watching, and re-watching, some RP Mini reviews, I finally decided to bite the bullet and pre-ordered the RP5 in black (after waffling about whether to get the black of 16-bit.) I figured it was the best compromise in terms of screen size, screen quality, strength of emulation, and price. Had the Odin Portal been a bit smaller with maybe a 6 inch screen and maybe come in around closer to $250, I may have spent $50 more just to be sure that I could run almost 100% of GCN and PS2 games, but the higher price tag (especially after you convert to CAD) made the RP5 kind of tick all the boxes in terms of what was most reasonable. I also sold my RG556 for the same amount I paid for it, and put that towards the RP5. Very hyped to get my first ever Retroid device, especially one that's received so much praise. The 14th is just a couple days away and I'm so hyped and hoping to get my device before the end of the month!
Oh another Canadian! Yeah it's expensive for a lot of these higher end devices like the Odin 2 and Portal for us. I was so disappointed with the 556 screen I couldn't even finish my review on it, but it's nice you managed to put the money to something that checked off more boxes for ya. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun ahead with the RP5.
I have been watching these RP5 reviews non-stop, while I wait for my device to ship. This was one of the most comprehensive ones, way to go! The only aspects (not covered) that I am still interested about, is to whether the device works well docked to a TV. I had some input lagging from my RP4Pro, and I wonder if RP5 will be the same.
Great review. What's the top tier emulation that the Odin can handle? Does it play 3d Switch games like Odyssey and Breath of the Wild with 100% speed? If not, I might go with this.
I haven't tried BOTW or odyssey on my Odin 2 actually. The Odin 2 should be able to do a good portion of high end emulation unless there's an emulation issue with the particular game. It's definitely the most powerful between the two.
Give me an Retroid Pocket 5 with Odin 2's chip and it's game over for me. Odin 2 mini came so close to that but that 5" screen is just a bit too small, I need 5.5" minimum.
Oh it sure is, my RP3+ still gets plenty of use! I wish they used that T618 in more handhelds, sure people complained about how it was so overused but in the world of H700's and sh*t, this would be great! It plays everything up to dreamcast perfectly including Killer Instinct on Arcade, plays MANY gamecube games, some with upscaling, a good amount of wii games with tweaking and I even got Wipeout 2048 to be fully playable with vita3k! It's a great chip! Great handheld!
I just compared my RP Mini to my AYN Odin 1 and I couldn't detect the motion blur you described. Two different devices to what you've compared, but I thought they'd be comparable. Really enjoyed this review none the less. Cheers!
@IAMnocla The Retroid Pocket Mini is objectively better than the AYN Odin 1. The only reason to choose the AYN Odin 1 over the Retroid Pocket Mini is if you want a bigger screen. If you do, there are many other options to consider as well. For me, I was looking for a smaller device and thats why I prefer the Mini. It won't be for everyone however, which is why more people seem to be preferring the RP 5 over the Mini.
You're spot on. The RP5 is definitely a fantastic product. ❤❤ It's a perfect replacement for my Sony PSP Go. It's not dead yet, but the RP5 makes a good reason to make the switch before it does give out on me.
I'm upgrading from the RP3+ to RP5, it started shipping a couple days ago so I can't wait. That display alone is worth it, and it's plenty powerful. If I want higher powered emulation I have a ROG Ally X, so I don't need to look at the Odin 2 or any of its variants, which is good cause the RP5 blows the Odin 2 away build quality wise anyway.
My guy needs to learn the difference between a shell and a bezel. You cannot see the bezels on the retro 5 devices. The area around the display is the shell
Man was super hard to decide between this and Odin mini, screen is definitely better with that amoled and size but the aesthetics stick placement and the increase power was worth it for me to go with the Odin mini and while miniled has its drawbacks it’s by no way bad, that 16 bit colour way is really nice tho
To each their own, really enjoyed your take. But for me personally my Odin 2 Pro Rainbow variant with SlugWorks thumb sticks is the most perfect retro hand held I've ever played. That thing blows me away every time I pick it up. And the Rainbow variant looks so clean in person. No it doesn't have an AMOLED screen, but its 6" IPS screen still delivers a drop dead gorgeous picture all the same, especially with the graphics upscaling power the Odin 2's chips allow. And when I put it next to my AMOLED RG556, I never think wow, just look at how much worse the picture is. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if it was OLED like the new Odin Portal, I just love the Odin 2 Pro too much to care lol.
Glad you enjoyed the video regardless. It's fun to have so many choices in this hobby. Good you have something you enjoy playing on, that's never a bad thing. I still like the Odin 2 as well.
I'm still going to stick with my Odin 2. I really enjoy having anxiety free PS2 & GC and the best price to performance for Switch & WiiU. I've never experienced an OLED screen and that may perhaps be for the best 😅
I love my Odin 2 its still my go to until I order an RP5 but I played on game at night with all the lights off and I was like DAMN I really wish this was OLED 😂
@@knock090 Honestly just wait till Odin 2 Portal gets released and get one cheap from Indiegogo early bird. Therefore your getting another OLED display device like Retroid Pocket 5 with huge battery for way longer gaming time. And Snapdragon 8Gen2 on Odin 2 outperforms SD865 on RP5 on any games like Switch and Wii U will run full speed and upto 4x resolution. And I tried this on my Odin 2 with Yuzu Switch emulator running Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 and Doom Eternal at 4X resolution that's 4K. And still running full speed and Wii U CEMU is also way better on Odin 2 full speed. Yeah the only thing going for Retroid Pocket 5 is lower price and pocketability. Other than that Odin 2 wins in every way other than screen. And that'll soon be even playing field when Odin 2 Portal comes out with OLED display!
I really wanted to get the Pocket mini but decided to go for the RP5 because I wanted a bigger screen. If the Mini had a slightly larger screen that was widescreen I would have gotten that instead.
Great size for some hands but for us in the large hand club I think the ergonomics and stick layout of the Odin 2 will win out over OLED screens and smaller form factors every time. It’s also important to consider the stick placement. The RP5 chip can play PS2 but they still chose to plop the dpad up top. Regardless of hand size and comfort, that was an odd move by Retroid.
I sold my Odin 2 after I got my ally x. For a device so large I’ll stick with an x86 but I wanted something more travel friendly and this review made me happy with my purchase. I ended up going with the GameCube color. I’m definitely excited to get it in a try it out.
I want one real bad because its like a 556 without any of the drawbacks, Smaller, better controls, more performance, same pretty OLED screen better plastic texture, only thing id give the 556 is that it has better ergonomics and thats not the biggest deal in the world to me
I do kind of want an android handheld for android gaming, remote play, and some emulation (I already have a steam deck so that is always going to be stronger for a long time) but the only thing holding me back is I basically want an Odin 2 (screen size, ergonomics, performance) but with a rp5 type of screen. Maybe even high refresh rate too for 120fps moonlight streaming.
Kei is a moderator for retroid official discord server, however as far as im aware this device isnt payment for anything and is sent to him as a reviewer instead
I still really like it, no complaints or issues. Since getting it I haven't really picked up my Odin 2, even now. I think the panel is the big thing that's getting me to use it more than my other android devices, just so vibrant and bright I love it. The plastic on the grey model is also really fingerprint resistant so I don't feel like using it is gonna make it look worn out. I don't emulate PS2 often and the few switch games I've tried worked flawlessly. I've actually been finding myself playing a lot of android games on the RP5, probably more than any other system on there. Tons of great games coming out on android and it has enough power to run them all really well.
Really wish it had just a slightly stronger chip! Im still 50/50 between the O2M and am willing to spend the extra as an investment, but the screen on the 5 is very hard to ignore.
The panel on the Odin 2 mini has quite a lot of bloom and other issues (showed it in my review for it). In my opinion between the two I think the RP5 has enough power plus a much better panel.
GREAT effn review, buddy. I say you're one of the tops! Right next to Russ imo. You should be more out there, come on the Retro Handhelds Podcast as a guest, you DESERVE way better than this.
Thanks Kyle! I was actually asked to be on the podcast but I'm pretty busy just keeping up with reviews and balancing work, plus I was out of Canada on vacation for a month to Japan. Always busy unfortunately.
I wonder if Titan Quest would work if you transferred the game's data files from another Android device so that it doesn't need to download them. I'll have to try this when my RP5 arrives, I really do love Titan Quest.
It might also come down to the version of Titan Quest as well. I have the Legendary Edition on my Odin 2, but the Ultimate Edition on the Play Store is listed as incompatible. So I'm wondering what version Kei has.
This will be my future combo as well. I was considering the Odin 2 but I thought it was too close to the size of the SD - and OLED screens are freaking awesome. Can’t wait for mine!
Depends what you're looking to get it for. Most emulation is fine on it and Android games run great. There's very little to dislike about the RP5 so far.
You'll have a blast in Japan! I just got back and I already miss it. The best place to buy it is from the main Retroid website. I put links in the description as well. I looked at many retro gaming stores while I was there and all I saw was one overpriced RP3+, lots of great prices on Nintendo devices though.
Oh. You had just mentioned getting some devices there. I already have the RP5 pre-ordered on their website. I was just wondering what stores to check for other devices. Thanks!
@jacobdixon1171 the best stores I found were outside of Tokyo. However Surugaya in Shinjuku was decent: maps.app.goo.gl/qppZoj97jfqAsJ9a6 This hard off was legendary! Saw a GBA and multiple gbcs for about 4000 yen each. I also picked up a sealed copy of Pokemon shining Pearl for 1000 yen. maps.app.goo.gl/radkEkSygGiTX5646 This hard off in Chiba was great too! (Mostly for games) maps.app.goo.gl/13smqdk2YvH6Y9sk6 This was also probably the best Surugaya location I went to (picked up a gbc for 3500 yen): maps.app.goo.gl/4rDyatML3mStb7B28 This one in Tokyo was also decent, especially for being in the heart of Akihabara (found an sp here for 4000 yen): maps.app.goo.gl/C3g5LdLVGXjYwhMAA
I want one clean game emulator software rhat runs any game, does that exist? Before i but my first emulator (this one) i want to know if i have to use it like a phone or if there is like a simple software i can use were i just select my game and nothing else
looks really good but gonna wait to see the odin 2 protal i think its gonna go for $150 more than the RP5 but has a 7 inch oled 120hz screen and the snapdragon gen 2 with 8000mah battery but i do see the RP5 being the more portable option i only want portable for in home use couch, bed, porch etc
@@jarod3371 That makes literally no sense lol. OLED is literally not supposed to light up the color black... since in OLED, black is the ABSENCE of light.
I cancelled my RP5 preorder and just went for the Odin 2. For me, the almost flawless PS2/GameCube emulation wins over the better screen and smaller form factor. Very close though
The only retroid pocket 5 things that disappoints me…. No multi colored joystick lights The button letters on black aren’t colored and are just plain white
Hey brother please review warzone mobile new update which will drop on 14 nov , this update only supports high end androids , this will be the best way to understand this device capability , please remeber this
I like that you take time to review these awesome retro consoles but I have to say that the cyclic repeating background noise is hair pulling bad for me. My brain just cannot stand it. I cant make it five minutes into this video because of the pops and clicks.
The bgm? I'll try and find some better background music that isn't so noticeable. I could also just turn it down in future videos. Sorry I thought it was pretty quiet on my headphones. Thanks for letting me know.
Its a trend in modern music and on youtube with the cyclic background noise. Your video is far from the worst sound. I have misophonia and I end up not being able to watch a lot of reviews because of lofi beat ambient noise. Anything that repeats like du chi du du chi du chi du du chi over and over and over I just lose my mind over it. Thank you for being considerate on trying other sounds. I like melodic sounds as they dont repeat as much. I didnt think I would get a response. Thanks again!
It’s definitely covered most of my needs, it bugs me not having a back button though. There are a bunch of games I wish ran better, like bully, shadow of the colossus, tatsunoko vs capcom runs slow, black is hard to run.
It sucks to be honest but great price they could had add 90 fps and price it a bit more than it be perfect for some games I want play I only see 30 fps in call of duty mobile and this thing can't even run nfs most wanted well

Always busy unfortunately.
waiting for my black rp5... display is amazing a specially after 4 pro
It was just the standard version as the legendary version wasn't on sale at the time. I should try moving the data files over, that might fix it.
You think a Steam Deck Oled and RP5 is a good combo?
Amazing combo! Steam deck for steam games and the RP5 for emulation and travel.
This will be my future combo as well. I was considering the Odin 2 but I thought it was too close to the size of the SD - and OLED screens are freaking awesome. Can’t wait for mine!
One question I have which no reviewer seems to cover is multiplayer. Is there an easy way to play multiplayer with another RP5 user?
Retroarch has multiplayer support but I think it might be core dependent. That's probably the easiest way to play multiplayer between two RP5s.
The rp5 is very sexy but i opted for that sweet odin 2 mini. Vita vibes 😊
Is there some point that holds back?
Depends what you're looking to get it for. Most emulation is fine on it and Android games run great. There's very little to dislike about the RP5 so far.
battery has issues, sticks awkwardly placed.
Does it play all of the ps2 games ? 😊
It should work nearly flawlessly for most minus the problematic titles that don't emulate well in general.
Intro: AMOLED has ruined us all for IPS!
Ha so true Adin! We're spoiled now with this beautiful panel.
Im going to japan, where is the best place to buy handhelds like this?
You'll have a blast in Japan! I just got back and I already miss it. The best place to buy it is from the main Retroid website. I put links in the description as well. I looked at many retro gaming stores while I was there and all I saw was one overpriced RP3+, lots of great prices on Nintendo devices though.
China.
Oh. You had just mentioned getting some devices there. I already have the RP5 pre-ordered on their website. I was just wondering what stores to check for other devices. Thanks!
@jacobdixon1171 the best stores I found were outside of Tokyo. However Surugaya in Shinjuku was decent:

This hard off was legendary! Saw a GBA and multiple gbcs for about 4000 yen each. I also picked up a sealed copy of Pokemon shining Pearl for 1000 yen.

This hard off in Chiba was great too! (Mostly for games)

This was also probably the best Surugaya location I went to (picked up a gbc for 3500 yen):

This one in Tokyo was also decent, especially for being in the heart of Akihabara (found an sp here for 4000 yen):

Ghosting: The uncomfortable feeling could also be due to Odin 1 and 2's market leading 130 ms built-in Android lag/latency :(
Does it play most of the Wii catalogue?
Only 31 degrees on heavy load? Take my moneyyyyyyyyyyy
I want one clean game emulator software rhat runs any game, does that exist? Before i but my first emulator (this one) i want to know if i have to use it like a phone or if there is like a simple software i can use were i just select my game and nothing else
Ayn and Retroid are the same company
looks really good but gonna wait to see the odin 2 protal i think its gonna go for $150 more than the RP5 but has a 7 inch oled 120hz screen and the snapdragon gen 2 with 8000mah battery but i do see the RP5 being the more portable option i only want portable for in home use couch, bed, porch etc
0:02 if the screens are supposedly OLED, why are the black backgrounds illuminated?
Emulator needs to support it
@@jarod3371 That makes literally no sense lol. OLED is literally not supposed to light up the color black... since in OLED, black is the ABSENCE of light.
@@mr.number9279 because the android settings UI is very dark gray and not black, hope this helps
@@glazedbelmont Yeah this gets brought up a lot. The RP5 and Mini do NOT display blacks properly at all. Look at borders for games... same thing.
WTH you talking bout? are you saying it’s not oled?
yes the low input latency is because of oled, also the perfect motion, 60 fps on oled looks smoother than 100 fps on my va
I cancelled my RP5 preorder and just went for the Odin 2. For me, the almost flawless PS2/GameCube emulation wins over the better screen and smaller form factor. Very close though
Higher input lag and screen smearing was the thing that made me step back on the Odin 2
@ yeah fair enough. If both were combined it’d be the perfect device
Memory is fast in the Odin 2 ..??! Retroid has good bezels!! And touchscreen also!!
2:21 nice math.. That’s 219-199=20, not 19
The only retroid pocket 5 things that disappoints me….
No multi colored joystick lights
The button letters on black aren’t colored and are just plain white
Do you find the mini and RP5 screens to be comparable? Just curious because i have the mini and cannot believe how good the display is.
In terms of vibrancy and brightness? Yeah very close. The RP5 screen might be a tad brighter though and obviously sharper but close color wise.
No worries! Thanks for the input! I'm always trying to improve as a content creator.
I suppose I should upgrade my retroid pocket 3+….
Coming from the 3+, that's a pretty big upgrade. Does the 3+ do everything you need it to do?
It’s definitely covered most of my needs, it bugs me not having a back button though. There are a bunch of games I wish ran better, like bully, shadow of the colossus, tatsunoko vs capcom runs slow, black is hard to run.
Ah, yeah it would be a good option then. The screen alone is worth the upgrade in my opinion coming from the 3+, performance is just a nice bonus.
No amazon prime 😢
I can take the Odin 2 off your hands lol
Doesn't feel like a review. More like a glaze session.
can't find a single one that isn't on the rp5, I'm guessing payment upfront on top of affiliate.
damn what did you do in Japan?
It sucks to be honest but great price they could had add 90 fps and price it a bit more than it be perfect for some games I want play I only see 30 fps in call of duty mobile and this thing can't even run nfs most wanted well
Very cool. Stick not on top wont buy. Getting odin 2
Too small, but great review
Hahahaha next time at least try to make it less obvious that you were paid
...What?
