Joshua Slocum was one of the first adventures I read concerning sailing. I have built about 12 sailboats from scratch with blueprints. Sizes from 5' to 26'. I am now 71yrs. old and do not sail anymore. I am from Louisiana and have lived on the coast of the Gulf all my life. It was thru Slocum's book that I accumulated my great respect for the sea. I have made short journeys, nothing to brag about, but I really do miss sailing. It was kind of you to go to the trouble, thank you so much.
I just started re reading the book after 35 years and it occurred to me that I could follow Spray's route using Google Earth so I googled "route of the spray" and found this. Thank you but darn you. Every time I think I have an original thought and then google the thought or idea I discover that one of more people have beaten me to it. On a planet populated by over 7 Billion people I'm now virtually certain that I've never had an original thought during my sixty years of exchanging gasses with the atmosphere.
“Darn you” I was going to write the exact same comment... But you beat me to it :-). Not only can I not come up with an original idea, I can,t even think of an original comment! King Solomon said it long ago, “There is nothing new under the sun.” In the end it’s good to know we live in a world of like-minded, thoughtful people who share their great work with us.
Just am in the middle of reading the Kindle version of the book and because it does not include the illustrations I thought I would do a search for them and behold was your video and KMZ file. Awesome and thank you - you made my day! All the best and fair winds... @spcharby
Works well. I have read the book many times & have not tired of it yet. A fascinating character with a nice sense of humour, what I find extraordinary is not only did he sail alone around the World but he built the boat himself. Of all the people that have sailed the oceans alone since JS how many can say they built the boat as well. And what a job he made of it.. "It leaked not a drop".
Just finished reading the book, (book is free on amazon kindle). As a huge fan of Google Earth, I really enjoyed what you've put together. It is great that you've found a way to use a modern tool to put a timeless achievement into a context even a landlubber can appreciate! Nice work!
This is interesting from a boaters point of view as well as a computer programmer. I like the way you have leveraged google earth with travel literature.
Thank you! Just finished reading the book as e-book via the Gutenberg Project. Just bought a used book second hand. This one you want in your book shelf :)
Fantastic thanks, I started searching some names of places in Google maps and I was getting some weird results and scattered around the globe, I was looking for Coffee Bay; Charles Island and Fortescue Bay, I was expecting to find him close to the Cape Horn area. I look forward to sitting down to Google earth and experiencing the book with some modern day technology to enhance my reading pleasure. Your project will make it so much easier.👍
Hi, thank you so much for that. I was read the book and I had this idea, when I looking for the places online I found your video, so much better that I was imagine! thank for the work, and for sharing your passion with us! I could't download the KMZ, can I find him in another place?
This is a fine presentation and its key strength is its interactivity. For people who want to study the book and Slocum's voyage in greater detail, I have chosen a different format, one in which a 3D model of Spray is animated along the yacht's track. This also runs in Google Earth (plug-in) and includes the full text of the book and an audio version that plays as the animation is in progress. Search in Google for 'Joshua Slocum in Google Earth' to find the presentation.
I tried to do the same thing but I don't have time to do it. Hopefully I found you video ! Surprinsingly, i don't find any map on internet or in the book with his travel....
Hi, is this app still downloadable? i click on the link, but it just takes me to the google help screen. ????? am currently reading the book and would LOVE to follow along!!
Thank you very much for reminding me to try again! This time I was able to make it work, after doing some internet upgrading for speed. I think that was it. Really great resource, thanks so much.
