I hope Shoestring's channel stays up from now on. Wish I coulda' met him. My brief freight hoppin' days preceded his by at least 6 years but his experience and knowledge VASTLY exceeded mine and I've learned alot from him and can relate to so much of it.

You could keep several FRH or flameless ration heaters with you.
Usually only a buck at a Army surplus store.
    Beyond handy.
Lighting a fire isn't always the best option.
Will heat that meatloaf and peas up quick!
    Be safe and happy travels!

    • @squirreltamer2548
      @squirreltamer2548 11 місяців тому

Those ration heaters can be used as a fire starter in a pinch too. The reaction gives off hydrogen gas, highly flammable.

Glad you moved back to the internal pack, this external frame pack here is way less comfortable and is more cumbersome. Internal packs are the way to go by far. They ride a lot closer to your hips too and are much more comfortable and don't bounce around like external packs do.

Shoestring brother, prior to your videos I would have never considered buying a bucket for anything except laundry. Your influence and inspriation has seen me shell out over three hundred Australian dollars for a Yeti LoadOut bucket and relevant accessories in preparation for my own Shoestring life. Yeti should really look to sponsor you my man! God bless you brother and may He will always lookover you as you Hobo with dignity and in good faith. Shoestring you are a geniune salt of the earth.

Good pack but I carry a 10x10 tarp and an extendable walking stick.
I roll my tarp up in my pad. It protects it, keeps the punctures down.
It allows me to pitch a pyramid and the walking stick serves as the center pole. If its just light rain forecasted I just cover up with the tarp like a big blanket. If its a down pour and theres no cover, then I pitch up just about anywhere theres dirt because I know even the cops are not getting out in the rain to bother me. When I leave I never leave anything behind, nothing. I also keep super strong mosquito spray ( 10 hours ). I don't use much of it, If its a bad spot with bugs I'll pitch tarp and then Im enclosed by 3 sides. I also only carry a Leatherman Wave multi tool . Its great for sewing and general use. The best sewing thread in the world is Dental Floss. Its super strong and comes package nicely with a cutter built in. All in all its about weight. Weight is your enemy. Water alone is 7 pounds per gallon and you always got to have that with you.
I do carry a cooking cup but not a stove. Ive always just dug a trench 6-8" deep with my tarp stake screwdrivers and just burn twigs or small limbs around.

1:40 A lot of parking lots now days on the lamp posts have power outlets where you flip over the cover (most are oddly unlocked), we have a laundromat near me with one and also a small mall parking lot has one near a picnic table and also many convenience stores have exterior outlets as well.
3:55 Got that same machete. Also got a SOG folding saw that weighs nearly nothing.

  • @AldoSchmedack

Suggest ya carry a silcock key to get water. Also what tips do you have for cold weather? My grandpa had many garages he rented out and they were old railroad storage sheds and all had carvings from rail hobos. I am talking combined easily thousands of names and dates and some poetry and such! No exageration.
Nobody seemed to want them when it was time to sell. Sad to see them go but we decided to leave em when we sold out. They ended up tearing them down. I used to read box car children over and over as a kid, my favorite book. My grandpa gave me a hobo knife and grew up as a kid near Britt. I admire the life and fun of rambling.
If I was rich I'd own some rail lines and would make sure to have special passes for hobos to freely and safely ride rail lines if the signed a release waiver. No questions asked. Some look down on rail guys and I don't I admire ya'll 100%.

Great vid. Hope you can do an updated gear vid. Lest you already have. And that green Gold Bond powder is freakin' amazing; it keeps your clothes from sticking to you and keeps you smelling nice......and, it's got that menthol business in it so it keeps you cool! 60 lbs seems like a lot for the pack especially when you have to add the bucket contents to that so you’re hauling about 80 lbs around? Seems like almost too much, but I guess you know what you’re doing, or you’re just one tough hombre. When I pack up my total is about 45 lbs - food included. I use dehydrated packs kinda like civilian MREs. You can get them at sporting goods outlets. They are a bit more $$$ but lighten the load and make hopping easier.

I love how organized you are. You're got this down to a science but it's an art as well. I noticed you're very knowledgeable about the trees and nature stuff that's around. The flags are nice!! 🇺🇸👍
Thank you for your service to this great country. My dad was a Korean war veteran and passed at 82. The VA pays us a little money to help care for my mom who is now 85. It sure was a pain the a$$ getting approved for the benefits he earned during wartime but that's GOVERNMENT for ya

Maybe you mentioned it in another video but how were you able to get help when you hurt your hand? I think you were in Alaska at the time?

@@TheHoboShoestring That's awesome, I'm from Ottumwa, I'm very seriously planning to take time off work this summer and ride the rails for a couple weeks or so. It just draws me in and I want to do it. I've been watching several of your videos as well as others to try to learn as much as I can because if I can't talk anyone into going with me, I'll be going alone. Safe travels and if your ever in Ottumwa and need anything shoot me a msg on here, I'll get the notification. Thanks and stay safe!

I hate to endorse Carhartt and RedHead, but yeah way better than the Rothco brand China stuff online and brick and mortar surplus stores are selling... Shoes I go with Wolverine, HiTec, Timberland, or Merrell boots just cause they are easy to source compared to Georgia Giant or Austin and the like. I also use a $40.00 jungle-hammock and a harbor freight tarp as a rain-fly
