Just got the news of Shoestring's passing.I remember watching this a while back so thought I would come back for a visit.Goodbye Shoestring.I am sure on a cold winters night there is a warm corner of a grain hopper that is occupied by the spirit of The Hobo Shoestring.Ride on.
Mark lived the life he thoroughly enjoyed. His passion. He travelled and saw the US more than anyone could dream of. A kind soul with incredible knowledge. We'll sure miss him. Glad ol' son is at peace. He passed on after conquering his UA-cam goals, patched up his relationship with his dad, had a sweet base camp he called home. He took the west bound out on his terms. Glad we have these stories to tune into when nostalgia kicks in or we just need a quick smile. RIP Mark. Godspeed.
He's just someone you used to know. as someone who grew up by the tracks and been around trains, one always dreamed of hopping on and not knowing where or when it would take you to, but he fulfilled that dream for me.
I've been a rail fan for most of my life, yet Shoestring taught me many things about railroading that I probably wouldn't find in any book. I'm going to miss "ridin' the rails" and all the stories. Rest in Peace Mark.
What a legend. His photographic memory is stunning. Knows every city & rail yard in every direction, no matter where he is. The stories he took to his grave are all our loss. Eternal peace, Hobo. Ride on...
I’d never thought it would be possible to feel grief for someone I’d never personally met, nor did I imagine I could feel a loss along without others I’ve never met or have a clue of their faces etc. What a loss for the world. But what an incredible story of a common man you may have driven by on the road.
We don't live far from the Selkirk yard you were talking about. Now everytime I hear a train horn, I think of you. Hope you are riding the rails in Heaven now Shoestring. Can't begin to say how much I miss ya, even though we never met.
This man reminds me so much of my now deceased younger brother, the way he carried himself , his way of living life to the fullest, and honesty. Now watching this video, shoestring tells us how he got his name. My brother's last name was Mc.Daniel. Now thats a total trip. My brother also road trains for a a few years , he told me so many stories of his travels. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I personally knew Shoestring Massey of Bruceton, Tennessee. The Song was written about him. He had been to our house numerous times an ate with us. My dad carried him around the county as he needed to go somewhere. I have been fishing with him at the Big Sandy. I also knew Samuel Hogin (deceased) who wrote the song as he was a hometown person who grew up knowing Shoestring too. I'll post the song next. The first time I heard the song, I was attending "Nashville Now" TV show hosted by Ralph Emery and Mel McDaniel was the guest. When he sang the song I told myself, "that must be the Shoestring I grew up with"...
You are so right James Wilkinson. William Roy "Shoestring" Massey is whom the song was written after. He was My Great Uncle for a bit. He was about 101 years old when he passed. Buried right there in Carroll County
Such a wealth of information from this man. RIP Shoestring, thank you for sharing your life with the world. You were an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to your life's experiences.

Always cool to hear of Shoestring passing through the Northeast back in the day. Maybe he was on one of trains I saw/heard passing through town. Rest in Peace, Shoestring.
