    Great videos!!
    Would you mill the block halfs if you couldn’t line cut the main bearing journals? Just asking since I work at a rebuild shop and touching the clearances of the block half’s is a major “no no”

    Very nice work as always. Recommend line hone vs. reaming. I always hone cylinders with case torqued together.

    If you remove 0,05mm from the block centerline for the main bearing journals (0,025mm per half) and also deck the head side of the block 0,025mm (a guess) do you have to reduce the connecting rod length by 0.05mm (or order pistons with a higher wrist pin location) to keep the same compression ratio? My first thought is it isn't enough to worry about, but then knowing the quality you build I doubt there is much you don't worry about! :)

    How do you compensate for the raised piston height after surfacing the crankcase halves?
    Beautiful work. 👍👍

      i may be wrong but im pretty sure he uses a really small spacer, it takes off so little through that he might just leave it with a bit higher compression

    It just looks like the case is rocking in the honing machine... I hope it’s just the camera but I can see the studs moving back and forth.

      Just honing it's fine, if he was boring and correction was needed yeah the block needs to be secure. The honing machine swivels it's not the same machine he uses for boring. I do believe.

    • @syncrosimon
      @syncrosimon 4 роки тому +4

      tjlovesrachel it’s okay as the honing stones are sprung loaded and remain flat against the bore regardless of the minor angle changes, but yes I picked that movement out too and had to think about it. Unusual to see though in this perfect engine build.

    Do your blocks normally move around that much when honing the cylinders to size? 12:57 Probably doesn't matter much with the flex in the head and shaft.

  • @danchesney631

    How do the bearing journals get over sized, when they’re not the wear surface? Decking the block mating surfaces is a neat trick, but that only makes the journal diameter smaller in the cylinder plain, and doesn’t change it much, if at all, in the plain defined by the mating surfaces of the block. Am I missing something? How many times can this be done, or how much can you remove?

    • @TickyTack23
      @TickyTack23 4 роки тому +1

      OEM tollerances are not the same for performance tollerances, the bearings they bought might be thinner, and the after market crankshaft might be a slightly smaller diameter. In general producing exact spec parts consistently is not really possible, there will always be a few thou over or under because the equipment producing the parts will always wear down just ever so slightly. So in a performance shop, you acount for these variations to produce a tight fit. This is why just buying performance parts and putting the engine together will not produce a performance engine. Its the craft of maching everything together to produce a true fit.

  • @Limeayy

    5:05, if you machine the block's down to make sure it's flat, won't the bore be a big oblong? So in essence, how would you go about fixing that? Do you go by placing the bearings in the journal and then tightening the fasteners and then stretching the fasteners... then machining the bore's out till they are truly circular again that way or how?
    If that's the case above ^, then that would mean that like kings bearings and so forth they have alot of layers of different metals, that would kind of defeat it's purpose?
    9:01, what lube did you use for the threads on the head studs? Why not use ARP ultratorque? Curious!

    • @TickyTack23
      @TickyTack23 4 роки тому

      The crank bore was initially too big, either likely from wear, OEM tollerances not being that great, or the crankshaft being slightly under OEM spec. So the first remove a few thou on the surface, which results in the crank bore now being undersized in relation to the new crankshaft they plan to use. Then at 6:55 they use a hand reamer to make a precise circular fit for the crank. Reamers are precision instruments used for finishing bores.
