EVAP Carbon Canister has Gasoline Dripping Out Zero Turn Mower

  • Did I fix it? I wish I knew but I'll have to wait till we mow a few hours.
I can't really understand the total operation of this EVAP system on the SCAG Cheetah with Kohler EFI engine. The only possibility I can come up with is the vent system gets plugged to where the fuel tank becomes pressurized to the point of forcing fuel up the fuel pump intake lines and to the fuel pump, which has a "T" line connecting it to the purge lines going to both EVAP carbon canisters. I spoke with one dealership and he's not 100% sure how it happens so I will consult with another this week and do a follow up video.

I’ve ran it for ten hours since I disconnected the charcoal canister lines where they exit the tank on top. It runs like new. Your video helped me solve the issue. Thanks. Scag told my dealer shop foreman that it’s a known issue and there is a scag service bulletin addressing it. The replacement canisters are $83 each. Good luck and thanks again.

We just had this I starting wondering if it was fuel related so I need to cheek this.
I'm happy someone made a video about this problem.

They are some great mowers! I have one that is 12 years old and never had a problem with it so far. I had it serviced a couple of months ago and ask them to changed the belts because they are the originals. When I went to pick it up they gave me the old belts back so I could have them for spares. They were still in that good of condition. I cut 3 1/2 acres. If you have an exit vent for the fumes there should be a place for air to get in to allow circulation are you would get raw fuel or vapor lock. You might want to look to see if the cap has a inlet vent. Hope you get it fixed Pm!! Have a good week my friend!!

Thanks John! I don't believe the fuel caps are vented on this year model.
3 1/2 acres!!! You got me beat unless I throw in the neighbors yard I mow too.
Your SCAG has been a darn good one it sure sounds like!
      Stay safe!

i think the check valve at the tank was fine. my other suspicion is the valve at the other end of the carb, it's supposed to open when the engine is running to purge the vapors into the engine. i'd check all lines, valves and clean any serviceable components in the charcoal canister. if on a whim the charcoal canister has a small crack then all bets are off with the system functioning properly and that could cause the issue. i always wondered why scag didn't put a small screen filter in the filler neck of the tank that you could remove and clean. dirty fuel going in, perhaps a bit too full, and/or some sloshing or driving up a slight incline could be enough to get some fuel in there and if it's been hotter in the garage or where ever you store it lately can create the right ingredients to make it siphon raw fuel into the charcoal canister and cause it to leak. this is an issue if this is stored in a garage where the fumes have access to a furnace, or water heater, any spark and boom, lawsuit. scag is good about chiming in on youtube videos, hopefully they will have a solution. when you figure it out, please post a follow up video :) I just bought a scag and have been putting it to the test making videos, etc.

Thanks for commenting! I just visited my local SCAG dealer today and he told me he has never seen it or heard of it....smh.
I called another SCAG dealer just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio and he had no idea of how it happens and they have only sold one carbon canister. He also mentioned the canister costs about 120.00.
I'm still checking with other dealers as SCAG has no direct dial phone number.

Can anyone tell me why all fuel tanks come with no drain plug? Every tank needs drained out and cleaned yearly. Even cars, you get water in the tank and it’s a major problem to drain, why? They make it a crazy hard problem to clean a tank. It’s really stupid.

I have a older snapper pro I use for commercial mowing. It has two six gallon tanks and I mow on extreme angles. Obviously I need to fill them completely up. If your gas cap is vented then what’s the point of dealing with all these problems. Just take them off. Yeah on hot days you’ll smell a little venting but leaking expensive fuel seems more dangerous than good

We had this problem with one of our tiger cat 2s. The guy that ran the mower just overfilled the tank and once we let him know to not go over the white sleeve the problem went away.

Thanks for the comment! After I removed my canisters and cleaned them out with low pressure air, I never filled to over 3/4 tank and have not had any further issues.
Be extra careful too when fueling up , if you know you are going to mow up an incline with it.

Heard from mechanic today that said known issue from scag (repair bulletin issued). It’s from overfilling tanks or operating on steep hills where fuel may enter vent line and into charcoal filter and O2 sensor sees too much fuel coming to engine and cuts it off. No real solution other than keep fuel low enough so that doesn’t happen or circumvent charcoal system although That’s not officially recommended. I’ll see if this solves issue.

My cub cadet xt2 with EFI engine has one of these. It acts like it’s flooded often.
I can’t figure it out. I’m going to disconnect the unit by plugging the hoses and see what happens.
It appears these are for environmental fumes consideration only.

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  3 роки тому

Everett, they were just small foam and synthetic fabric discs pressed into that opening.
You should be able to carefully pull them out with small pliers and even possibly your fingers.
Wash them off and press them back in.

      Hi Mark, yes it did!
I have not had any gasoline entering the canisters since then.
I am now filling to about 5/8 tank though, maybe 3/4 if I'm going to mow immediately with it.
I have not bought a new canister yet.
I don't know how fuel can enter that vent line as it is in the top of the tank.
SCAG has no phone number to call them. I love the Cheetah, I just wish I could talk to a knowledgeable person at SCAG. They want you to go through your dealer for everything.
Two weeks ago my dealer sent his mechanic to a SCAG training seminar in Evansville, Indiana.
I'll touch base with him to find out if the canisters were discussed.
      Thank you for watching!

@@pmtips4482 I am dealing with the same issue. I have a 2019 with roughly 210hrs on it. I have both tanks filled and I went to change the blades so I rolled my front end up onto my trailer. I noticed the canister on the left side leaking. I had the tank toggle to the right hand tank. I called my dealer and he said it is very common for this to happen in my scenario. I have changed the blades on this mower close to 30 times and never had this happen. I am figuring I have my tank filled too much and when I tipped the front end up, it caused my issue. He did say there was no need to worry that this shouldn't cause any issues anywhere else with the mower.

What the heck is the EPA Carbon Cannister? What does it do? haha

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  4 роки тому +2

Jacob, it captures gasoline fumes and routes them to the fuel pump and the intake for combustion, all while providing some venting too. It has "EPA COMPLIANCE CANISTER" on the can itself.
Mandated around 2012 on some OPE.

@@pmtips4482 ... My scag was mowing for a short time then cutting off . I tried and tried to figure it out , researching and researching , no help.
Then I replaced the valve in the top of the tank........(video at time 2:39) , all fixed now. Blowing though the old valve acts the same as the new valve but
for some reason that was the problem. I did notice that the fuller the tank of gas the sooner the mower would shut off. It got to a point that it was backfiring and just wouldn't run until the tank valve was replaced.
