Allen Edmonds $100 Ebay Challenge | Great Shoes For Less

  • Customers are always asking us, "What is a good shoe under $100?" The answer? Not many. Shoes under the $100 price tag are generally not made very well. Sure, you can find some here and there, usually on sale or factory seconds, but generally speaking, shoes under $100 are just NOT made well.
Searching through websites such as eBay, or even Shopgoodwill.com, are GREAT places to find used, or even slightly used, shoes that are very well made and much, much cheaper. I can't tell you just how many Allen Edmonds, Ferragamos, Aldens, etc. that I have found on these sites for under $30. Even at that price, you still have money to refurbish them and still come out right at $100. Case in point, it's smarter to buy a lightly used high-quality shoe for $100 than it is to spend that same money on a cheaply made shoe for the same price. You'll have the high-quality shoes for much, much longer!
Want to have your shoes refurbished? Looking for the BEST shoe creams, soaps, waxes, brushes, shoe trees...and much more? Find it all here:

In surfing UA-cam I ran across your video and I was hooked. My late husband was a career Marine and see what you guys do to save a pair shoes is to be saluted. Your tread is a dieing art. Not many people polish shoes today. I grew during a time when everyone in the house took their shoes to the shop. Thank you for your craft.

Keep in mind that when you buy shoes on-line you have no idea about the fit. I’m a Thrift store hound. You can find awesome deals if you know the brand names. I’ll find three, or four, name brand shoes (not my size), and trade them for a great pair of shoes or boots(my size), with my shoe cobbler.

Brett Patrick Haha...thanks, Brett! Yeah, eBay is a fantastic place to find good shoes at bargain prices. Just keep in mind that the soles/heels can usually be redone. Just make sure that before you buy, the uppers and inside lining of the shoes are still in good shape.

@@TrentonHeath how can we do that strictly through photos?

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  5 років тому +3

@@Kslater23 Good question. Most sellers will state the condition along with pictures from multiple angles. If you have questions or concerns about the condition, just ask the seller. Obviously, buying second hand has its risks, but it also has its rewards. As far as the lining and uppers, we're just wanting to know if there are holes or rips. Another question, I'd ask if not stated is how old and how often were they worn.

Wonderful job, loved the video. Very well done, a pleasure to whach. Completely agree with the comment cobblers are so under appreciated. I'm from a shoe manufacturing town in Brazil, all my working life I've been in the shoe components business, started when I was 23 - just turned 59. During that time I've visited most shoe factories and repair wholesalers in the US. What a wonderful time it was back then. Will never forget the distinct perfume of leather & glue in a shoe factory, all the genuine, real nice folks I've got to know in my trade. In the 80's and 90's there was still a lot of shoe factories in the US, it's nearly all gone to Asia now, except for a handful of mid and small size factories. Maybe this pandemic will show that no country should give up all it's manufacturing. I still supply some soles to Allen- Edmonds to this day, have been to their factory in Port Washington many times in all these years, they make world class shoes there, definitely highest qualify and extremely comfortable to wear. They've halted shoe production to make 5k masks a day during the pandemic, to help the health system. Hope this ordeal will be over soon and life back to normal. Stay safe.

More than just tears and gouges on the upper, you also have to look out for surface peeling of the lacquer used on corrected grain shoes - even some AE shoes use corrected grain leather. When it's a hi-shine finish almost always a plasticy lacquer has been applied to the surface. Over time this cracks and then begins to peel away. Shoe polish won't fix this. To a lesser extent this also applies to shoes embossed with a pattern, such as scotch grain. Damage to the embossing, such as scuffs, can't be repaired or polished out. Scuffs on full grain calf skin that hasn't been embossed will polish right out, generally.

This video inspired me to keep an eye out for a pair of shoes that was worth getting fixed up. I finally found them, a pair of Allen Edmonds strands. $15. The soles were worn out, but the uppers were good. Brought them to a local cobbler and paid $75 for a resole. But then when I brought the shoes home I was very very disappointed to see that he only did a half sole and didn't touch the cork. So much for getting something that comes close to a new pair of shoes.

Started getting into dress lace ups earlier this year and long story short, I recently bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds on eBay! They're a model that's been out of production for probably 10 years now (Byron), but they were in great shape for $58 and in my size (11D), so I got them! Although the length and width were both perfect, the instep was too roomy, requiring me to put some insoles in the shoes, but now they fit very well overall! The previous owner also glued on these ugly yellow crepe rubber heel pads, so I had those pulled off (only $10 for the job). Now they're back to where they should be!
I've got my eye on a second pair of Allen Edmonds to add to my wardrobe, but I'd like to try and buy that pair new (albeit factory seconds on sale). I like to try to support these companies as much as possible, but I'm also a bit on the cheap side ($120 is my max price for dress shoes), so it's a matter of waiting for the right opportunity! I think with brands above Allen Edmonds (Magnanni, Santoni, Carmina, etc.) that I may have to go with used shoes all the time, but that's not a huge deal. The one thing I learned, though, is not to go into one of these brands' stores and tell them that you're planning on buying used shoes on eBay...the guy at my closest Allen Edmonds store was noticeably put off when I mentioned the possibility of doing that.

    • @TrentonHeath

Matt W Thanks for sharing! As we mentioned in the video, buying great, high-quality shoes, even if they’re used, is much better than buying cheaply made, low-quality shoes. Good for you for buying the AE’s! Keep your eyes open, as there’s always great deals online. Haha...yeah, you may want to keep that to yourself and not tell the stores. 😉

Jared Ward We adjust the machine beforehand so that the stitch width is the same as original and pre-punch a hole that we use as the starting point (sort of like what you mentioned with the awl). We use Angelus and Fiebings when staining leathers after a repair, but when it comes to the upkeep of soles on a pair we’re polishing, we don’t like using edge dressing. I know a lot of “shoe shine guys” use it, but we don’t. Using a shoe cream around the edges of your soles/heels, we feel, does a much better job. Also, it comes in a lot more colors than edge dressings. Again, this is just our opinions.

I resell a lot of men's shoes so I completely enjoyed this. There's nothing like good leather shoes and, a great cobbler! I'd love a video on how to clean grime off a pair of good quality leather shoes. I mean shoes that are still amazing quality but have not been cared for and the built-up dirt is quite heavy so as to darken the shoes at the toes and heels and along the sole. What is a good shoe cleaner and/or what other kinds of cleaners would work?

dos dandelions Thanks...glad you liked it! We’ll definitely do a video over that. You can also use acetone or Saphir Renomat (which we sell) to really strip everything off the shoes. After doing that though, definitely condition them to put moisture back into the leather.

Can't go wrong with a pair of Allen Edmonds. I've had a pair of McTavishes for a decade, or so, and love 'em. The leather soles are showing a bit of wear, but it'll probably be a couple more years before I need to start thinking about having them re-soled.

Could cobblers fix it or should I just throw them away?

Great video! I'm learning alot from ya'll but yes, I'm not likely to spend more then 100-150 on a pair of shoes and at that price, they need to last. I'd like to see more casual shoes at this price point!

I have often wondered, whenever buying a new pair of shoes, how the manufacturer stitches all the way around the sole, do they assemble it first and then attach the top or what?. Now I know!

Hi! Can this sort of thing be done for rubber-soled models of AE shoes as well? I’ve got my eye on some for a family member, but there’s heel wear.

Nice video. Although I would suggest you should show a full 360 camera preview of the after product at the end of the video. Also would appreciate if you show which specific polishes you’re using to polish and give it that shine so it makes it easier to purchase off of your website. Thank you

That Landis Model K stitcher is a beast. My father had to have it often fixed, probably because (1) he never bothered to put the groove around the soles prior to stitching and (2l never plucked out the old stiches, especially when some shoes were resolved multiple times. BTW, does they still make Zoe's or Kelly's leather dye? Get some of that on your fingers and it will take a lifetime to wear off (lol)! Also, is Barge Cement still available?

Great video, Trenton. Thanks for sharing. A general question, if I may. In all your experience working with shoes, have you ever come across shoes made by Charles Chester? If you have, may I ask your opinion of them? Thank you.

Allen Edmonds. Thursday Boot Company. Edward Green. Salvatore Ferragamo. Meermin. Alden. Magnanni. Crockett & Jones. Stay away from Florsheim, Bostonian, and Johnston & Murphy. Those brands have really fallen in quality the past 20 years.

So what do you recommend when buying these used Allen Edmonds that don't need much reconditioning in regards to the cork bed. I bought some and I wish I could get it changed out to confirm to my foot. Does this ever reconfigure itself?
