- In this video, we take a pair of Allen Edmonds First Avenue boots, which originally had leather/rubber soles, and we switch them out for Dainite rubber soles and top lifts. Dainite soles & top lifts are an option for Allen Edmonds shoes and boots, and they're always a favorite among those shoe aficionados out there.

Did anyone else arrive here via Robert Powers UA-cam site? Cobbler Bob is the Allen Edmonds whisperer... I love these two young men too now!
You never cease to amaze me... What a revelation that the stitching machine will re-use the same welt holes if you remove all the old stitching! I really don't know what else to say, except you guys rock!
Allen Edmonds Boots are some of my favorites.
I appreciate the time you fellas take to describe what you're doing and the different parts of the shoes/boots. You've earned a subscriber
I’d like to see you shine the shoes and buff the color back in.
I love watching your videos. Inspires me to learn such a trade.
Thanks for your videos, I'm a Power cable Maintainer ( high tension lineman) for NYC Transit, 30 years and soon to retire. And no I'm not looking to become a Cobbler, lol but I will definitely say your profession is intriguing!!! I can watch you tear apart those shoes all night long, yes I work the graveyard shift!!! Lol Thanks again bud and God bless!!! 👍💪🙏
Found your channel last night. You’re gonna make me start buying used shoes. My house flooded so I have to replace my closet.
Really nice.
Reminds me of the adage:
_Use it up, wear it out,_
_make it do, or do without._
Awesome work as always. I love seeing the entire process and your explanation is perfect. 👌
Many appreciative thanks for the explanation of how the shop machines work. I've watched quite a few vids before coming across this one. I can say I like the shoes that are in rich dark colors of deep browns, rich reds, and black along with rubber outer soles.
I have those same boots. Awesome comfort. Very nice work. I found a new cobbler I think.
I really enjoy watching you guys work. I've learned that I've been treating my shoes quite badly and vow to look after them much better. It pains me to think of the incredible shoes I've tossed out because I thought they were beyond any hope of repair.
Drugtestcups Thanks! We really appreciate you watching. We started this channel for that exact reason. Glad to know folks are taking something away from them. 👍🏻
Enjoyed your video so much. I really like the detailed explanation. Part I missed was when you trenched out the lines for the stitches on the news soles. Thank you again
Dutch Wilson Thank you...glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for mentioning the solvent. I just discovered your channel and have watched about 20 videos so far and wondered what that was, and this is the first one I've seen where you said what that was.
I really love your channel, it is great to see you work. Thank you, I learned a lot!
Thanks Clara B.C. Much more to come.
You gentlemen do outstanding work!👍🏾
Good looking finished product. Enjoyed the video.
Found your channel thanks to the Kavelier. Procrastination kept me here. Worth it!
Edgar Martinez 😀 Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you so much for this video, it is extremely relaxing to watch. Please continue to upload these awesome content and have a great day. Cheers
I learn something new from a customers prospective in each video. The information sharing really distinguishes Trenton & Heath from other fantastic shoe repair channels. The informative content that the channel provides educates viewers so they may be more inclined to use their local cobbler thereby supporting a local business in their community. I'm sure Trenton & Heath's level of transparency and quality have put you on many viewers short list! Great job guys! Side Note: The AE 1st Ave is a great boot and should never have been discontinued.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind feedback! When we started our channel, we wanted to make it our goal to put out informative content. We get hundreds of questions regarding shoes from customers that come into our shop. We've used a lot of these questions as video content, so we hope it helps. Thank you again!!
I love how a punch has so many professional names yet it doesn’t change in appearance or function
It took a while for the Dainites to grow on me... but, after buying a couple of pair of AEs with them. I likes 'em !! Love seeing those channels to bed the stitching too.
one of the BEST VIDEOS EVER.......explaining all the secrets of cobblers......it seems like when i go and ask cobblers what they are doing to my 445.00 dollar ae daltons just like these they are somewhat vague and pompus they don't really go into detail but YOU HAVE SHOWN ME EXACTLY WHAT IS DONE......EPIC.....only you and kirby allison are explaining the behind the scences in
I like this craftsman. He explains what he is doing and tells us why he is doing it. Just a heads up to the Allen Edmonds experience. There are many shoes that are more expensive than A.E. None of which compare to the quality workmanship that goes into the A.E. Shoe. In addition if you call the factory and request having your shoes recrafted, they will mail you a postage free bag. Place your A.E. shoes in the bag and mail them with your name, address, phone number. Explaining what you would like done. They will send you back your shoes and they will look close to new. Excellent company, great service.
I did the Allen Edmonds recraft once. But what I found to be a better idea was to start a relationship with a local cobbler who you can personally talk to about the process. (I use Vinny from A1 Shoe Repair in Sonoma, CA)
I have had a much better experience and with higher quality for a slightly less cost with a local guy.
If you aren’t already a part Allen Edmonds enthusiasts, and the waxed and dyed Facebook groups then you should definitely check them out. You would fit right in!
Joseph Noa Thanks for the advice! Just joined both groups. 👍🏻😀
These videos are amazing. I’ve recommended all my friends to your website. Sadly I live in Maui, Hawaii now. Use to live In Louisville,Kentucky. Originally from Marengo,Indiana
Channel stitch on Dainites...Well done!! Awesome vids, guys. Keep it up
Beautiful work!!
the music made this video oddly calming and inviting, would love to see more videos with music
Very nice walkthrough, it seems though as if one of the soles is off center. Thanks for sharing
Saul Cabrera Glad you liked. Yeah, one of them was very, very slightly off up at the top. 😉
OK, thank you very much. I will let you know how it turns out.
A before and after pic at the end would be cool. Thanks, enjoy your videos.
So relaxing!!
Hey Dudes,
Great video! I'm happy to see how this stuff is professionally done.
I try to replace my own heel blocks and I have been doing okay so far. However, not having a shoe-anvil is something that makes it troublesome.
Should I get one, or is there something else that I could use? (I live in a big city, so having a single-purpose item seems silly).
Should spend more time showing off the finished product at the end!
Daniel Tojcic Will do. 👍🏻
@@TrentonHeath I agree! You should post before and after shots..
Cassie B Check our some of our newer videos. We’ve started doing that. It does make the finale much better. 😉
A few close-up shots that linger just a bit (maybe in slo-mo) would do the trick.
@@TrentonHeath question for a different video. Just purchased two pair of Johnston&Murphys. Can they be refurbished if I'm willing to spend the money?
Love your video very much haha, your subscribers has been doubled in one week!?Watching you pull the sole off and do resole is very satisfying 😆.Hope you can show other shoe brands like john lobb ,Crockett & Jones, trickers, loake Edward Green to us in the future 😂.
Leonelson Clementi Thank you very much! We’re looking forward to showing other brands to you all as the shoes come into our shop. Thanks for watching and following along!
Many videos already on this channel showing those brands.
Turned out nice I like the danite soles
I love the videos. Keep up the good work
Spidey At Work Thank you!
Hi Trenton & Heath. Always fun & interesting to watch you work on & restore boots & shoes. I loved the end result on this particular job. The boots really look great. Ok ne thing I wanted to mention - I think you guys should both wear gloves while using dyes, cremes, polishes, chemicals such as acetone, or any other type. (May over time be harsh on the skin...never know.) And I think you should both wear boots while working...instead of sandals, just to be on safe side.
Quedaron fantásticas las botas, quiero aprender, saludos cordiales desde Panamá
Great video!
Wish Allen Edmonds still made these...
Those boots are beautiful
I like the background music, it does not interfere with the video at all.
This is so cool!
Master craftsman.
Fascinating
beautiful work. more AE boots please!
Kirby Allison Said they were as far as they know I only shoe store to use Jr soles and heels, you guys do a fantastic job
Kirby is misinformed.
Nice job.
I'm gonna put the commando sole on my black A.E. Mctavish wingtips. The tread is kind of aggressive the way it is but the soles are super thin so I'm going custom.
nice job.
I love your videos. Just a question have you tried using Henkel Adhesives o 3M adhesives with a different applicator?
Nice video. Those Dainite heels always remind me of SNL’s Mr Bill, btw.
Honestly thinking about getting Dainite soles or their competition the Eaton (Vibram) soles for all my shoes once they need to be resoled. Especially because where I live it’s either raining, snowing or slush.
Awesome!
Nice I think a leather mid sole would of looked great 👍
Those boots are really great looking.
i alwawys wondered how the nails never hit the foot. eventually with wear and tear youd think the nails would start coming through, but apperantly it don't.
my guess is that the nail's aren't long enough to start being prickly on our feet
some times they do go through but they hit the metal thing they put the shoes on and they crimp while being hammered in so that the sharp edge is blunted and turns back towards the head of the nail
It can happen, I had a pair of Redwings that did it. They replaced them without a fuss. Too bad they had to give up their souls...
@@soggycracker5934 nice reply lol
Hello, love your videos. Informative and entertaining. I know it's hard to do reviews on every shoe brand out there, but up here in Canada we have Hartt Shoes from New Brunswick. They're only online, so I was wondering what your opinion might be, what have you seen regarding Hartt Shoes.
I found your channel yesterday and am addicted. Love the aprons! If I'm not mistaken, the leather is embossed with P & S (for Potter and Sons?) If you ever decide to sell those, I'm buying one.
Question?
Are the holes in the welts a standard distance apart for all shoes? Meaning, do you ever have to adjust the stitch width on the machine to match to hole spacing on the welt to reuse the same holes?
Fascinating!
I wondered the same.
A wonderful video. I really enjoyed it. I do not like Allen Edmonds thought.
I can’t express how much I love watching your videos. Nothing like after a long day of work coming home and watching these videos relaxing on the couch. However…I’m interested in a pair of Allen Edmonds Patton boot. I love that boot. But I wish it had a flat bottom leather sole. It would be perfect if it was. How much would it cost me to send it to you and have it resoled? I’m sure you both are so busy, but if you could help with that I’d appreciate it.
Just found your channel couple of weeks ago, thank you and subbed! Two quick questions if I may - dainties soles, do they make the shoes/boots more waterproof? And what do you do after you applied Renomat, do you rinse it off or just wipe it off using wet cloth?
M Sato Hi! Thank you for subscribing! Any rubber sole will be more waterproof than leather soles. It doesn’t necessarily make the shoe/boot more waterproof, but the soles will be. As far as the Renomat, I would recommend using a saddle soap to clean off the shoe after using it. If you don’t have a saddle soap leather soap, at least wipe them down with a damp cloth. I hope this helps.
Have you considered investing in a new non-noisy shoe harness apparatus? If it’s not in the budget, try putting a pipe insulation or have it rubberized.
Nice to see a traditional Cobbler at work. Apart from looking good, what are the advantages of a Dainite sole and heel over leather?
Steve Mr W Thank you! Dainite’s are going to last substantially longer than most leather soles because they’re a harder rubber. They also have a little more traction due to the little nub things on the bottom.
@@TrentonHeath I have a traditional Cobbler close to me . So I may go for the Dainites.
Nicely done. Do you also stock the red Dainite soles?
I'd like to see the new stitch you did with that fine machine of yours - removing the old one is fine and all, but do you make sure your new stitching fits the former holes of the welt?
Super informative video in regards to sending shoes back to the original shoe maker. Postage expense aside, do you guys accept mail orders? I own several GYW brands from Carmina, Gaziano Girling, Alfred Sargent, and Meermin. A couple pairs I would like resoled to Dainite. Thanks
Absolutely. Check out Potterandsons.com.
Me: what is that liquid that Heath puts on shoes???
After watching couple films of Heath... 🤔
First film I watched from Trenton: put some glue thinner...
Ah!!!! Thanks!!!!
It's a solvent that dissolves the glue making sole removal easier
Show the boots at the end while you are closing the video. Thank you for your hard work.
Hey nice work I love your videos one question can I light the color of a shoe from dark brown to a color like the boots
abrahan sosa chavez Thank you! The only way you would be able to lighten a dark shoe is to strip off all of the original color and then dye it the lighter color. It’s very very hard to strip off all of an original stain color. Unfortunately, shoe creams/waxes won’t lighten a shoe enough to go from dark/medium brown to light brown.
Hi Trenton and Heath, I absolutely loved the video. just amazing to see the whole process. Came over from The Kavalier, and wanted to know would the saphir Reno Mat remove the top coat from a Cole Haan or a Jonston and Murphy shoe ?
Farhan Ahmad We’re glad to have you! In regards to the Reno Mat, it can. I tell folks that you have to be very careful when using the Reno Mat, or any other stripping product, as it can definitely remove the finish on certain leathers. It’s usually best to only use this product on smooth, higher quality, open pored leathers. We work on A LOT of Cole Haans and Johnston & Murphy’s, and I would not recommend this product on most shoes from these brands. I would probably just stick with a basic saddle soap if you’re just wanting to clean them. I hope this helps.
Renomat destroyed a pair of my $ 900 Santoni shoes, it absolutely stripped ALL the colour off in a matter of seconds. Risky stuff..
Nick De Bruin Yep, we totally agree. It’s a great product for removing old built up waxes, but it’s definitely not for every shoe. I believe a lot of Santoni’s have hand burnished finishes on them, and it’ll strip all of that right off. We’ll do a video on this product soon.
Trenton & Heath, I was just gifted a new pair of Cole Haan loafers, and the shoe cream comparison video I saw that you guys said that Cole Haan shoes have a top coat on them, which can prevent the cream from soaking in the leather. I just wanted to remove the top coat to apply the Saphir cream on them. Thank you for the response!
Guys, found your channel in my suggestions last night and have enjoyed a few videos, fantastic to see skilled craftsmen at work, such a rarity these days.
That being said, it really bugged me that the rubber sole on the right boot was not properly centered, I would have had to remove it and re-glue it centered because it really does ruin otherwise fantastic quality craftsmanship.
Lynx G this bugs me too and it seems to happen a lot
Awesome video. Makes me want to go intern with a cobbler just for fun.
For purposes of removing the stitches & reusing the holes in the welt: Is the stitch length standard or do you have to match your machine to the stitch length?
Why are these videos so dang entertaining? I don't even own fancy shoes lol...
Haha...well, we really appreciate you watching!
The heel block looks like a smiley face
I really like leather boots like those but I don't like the very pointy ends at the toes. Are there any really good boots or chukka style boots with very rounded toe ends? Thank you ahead of time!
What about the Cordovan leather Allen Edmonds with the leather from Horween? I've been told that the leather needs extra care and can't be polished the same way as normal cow leather...so i've sent my Cordovan leather pair back for a full rebuild of the sole, and rubber sole upgrade and for a full re-polish. lmk your thoughts
Recently bought a pair of AE Parks with the Danite sole.
Never worn that material before.
How well does it hold up?
Any special care tips?
Thanks.
How are you finding yours? I got a pair of Church's with dainite a couple of months ago. Only seeing typical wear by the toe and heel, but I have this pattern with all my shoes.
do you find that allen edmonds uses different shanks in the same models of shoes, or do they consistently use the same type of shanks in certain models?
I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer for anywhere. I like shoes with lug type tread but I wear the heels very badly. Is there a heel saver made for lug/aggressive tread?
Tremendous work!
Thank you!
Thank you!
guys, just found the channel and really enjoying the videos. in this one you mention having different coloured thread on both the top and bottom stitching of the sole. can you explain how that is possible? i assumed it was a single stitch?
thanks and greetings from Glasgow, Scotland!
cjrae72 Hi there! We appreciate you watching us from over there in Scotland! 🏴 The Goodyear welting machine uses two threads when it stitched...one for the top of the welt and one for the bottom of the sole. It wraps those two threads together and pulls them tight as it stitches. We are able to use different colored threads to match customers certain taste. Good question!
@@TrentonHeath Thanks for the response guys and for explaining the process. Im thinking of putting Dainite soles on a few of my leather soled shoes due to the often wet weather here. I might explore the option of different coloured threads just to mix things up a little. Keep up the good work!
could you resole my corocoran jump boots? i got them in 1981 at Ft. Bragg and they served me well during my service. I would like them to be put back to the original style of sole, heal block and lift
hellyeaOU812 call them!
The resole service you offer always includes the change of the cork?
Hello
I literally enjoy shoe restoration because i get to learn things and at this age of 19 is good to learn things about shoes..
Sir i had a question that why you don't use shoe trees while restoration? I've seen a lot of videos but no shoe trees you've used..
How could he get shoe on the anvil to recraft if shoe trees are inserted? You must be thinking of the shine process.
Back to the welts, did you say you could replace the welt need be, or must they go back to the A.E. factory for that? Thanks, good content!
Peter Wong Hi! Yes, we can replace the welts if they need to be replaced. Thanks!
OCD wont let me get past the one issue with the stitching and the circles on the bottom of the one sole
Your beard looks great.
What is the glue thinner? A mix of water and some solvent?
Would you recommend washing leather or nubuck shoes in washing machine? I washed 2 pair of mine and reapplied cream on leather pair and now both leather and nubuck shoe leathers looks brittle.
I'm new to GYW shoes and have learned so much from your videos!
Question: Even if your cobbler removes the old stitches from the welt how can you be sure they're reusing the holes? From other forums I've read, it sounds like new holes are punched every resole since a machine does it. After 2-3 resoles the welt will have too many holes punched and need to be replaced.
You mentioned you'd reuse the existing holes and used a machine to stitch the new soles on. Is there something special about the machine that it can know where the existing holes are? Or do you set it up to the original stitch per inch and do the best you can?
Watch any video by Brian The Bootmaker, EVERY resole he does gets a new welt. Its just laziness not to replace the old welt.
Thank you very much. Should I use 400 gtit and go up to 600 or should I have it done in shop?
Either one is fine enough to get the job done. Just go easy.
Ohh the removing of old stitshes I didnt know.
Hi, nice video! But how do you know you really are using the same holes in the welt? You sew the sole turned upside down.. Thanks!
How do you line up the first restitch to the holes in the welt?
