After seeing The Elegant Oxford, I now have over 25 pairs of pre-owned shoes. I have re-conditioned them, dyed them and resolved them. I buy Loakes, Barker’s or churches and these shoes retail new from 200 - 300pound and I can pick them up of eBay for 20-50 pounds

Oh yes, I'm wearing my AE Park Avenues right this moment. $12 at Council Thrift here in Los Angeles. Yup. Almost flawless (maybe worn previously once). There is no thrill like finding high end shoes for pennies on the dollar. The hunt is the fun.

please consider a guide to shoe trees. let's talk shoe trees, where to get them, what are the best shoe trees, both new and classic. some shoe trees look like junk and do not help "block" the shoes correctly.

I have recently started buying pre-owner shoes. At first, it was to practice restoration techniques. But now I frequent the local thrift stores and eBay for pre-owned shoes for myself. Recently got some NOS Hanover boots from eBay and couldn’t be happier. Good deals to be found definitely.

Nothing wrong with pre-owned as long as you take care and disinfect the inside and the challenge to restore is great too and importantly, the craftsmanship is often a lot better than mass produced that is prevalent in today's shoe shops . A new subscriber by the way . I'm from Loch Ness Scotland.

Although I have purchased new shoes for years, my appreciation for vintage clothing and shoes has grown over the decades. I am now at the point, that I love to find excellent quality vintage and pre-owned clothes and shoes, and I spend less time shopping for new fashions. Having lived in England for several years, I prefer the style and construction of English shoes and tailoring. I love your channel. Thanks for sharing your art with the world. You are giving us great gifts in your lessons about revivifying vintage and pre-owned shoes.

I'm back in college full time working my way to a career in Law. I've been extremely self conscious at the fact that I've never given any consideration to business or classical attire, in the past year I've been studying more UA-cam videos in this area and recently discovered your channel about 2 months ago. With seeing some of your restorations I started looking at what's available on eBay. I've NEVER owned a pair of hand made or Goodyear welted shoes in my life. I now have 7 pair!! And, some had likely never been worn...unbelievable!!
Do you have any recommendations for how to pick shoe trees? I have a couple but they do not seem to fill out my shoes well. I'm an 11 D. A couple pair of my new/used shoes have some significant creasing I'd like to try to work on reshaping the leather. Thanks so much for your channel 👏🏼

Recently, I dared to try this for the first time and got a pair of goodyear welted black captoe Crockett and Jones Connaught shoes for only 80 euros. There was some scuffing along the sole edges, but that was an easy fix and it was a lot of fun making the leather shine again. They looked like new after that and I really owe it to this channel for inspiring me and providing all that I needed to know to take good care of quality dress shoes :)

Another good reason to go pre-owned: the environment. Upcycling and extending the life of existing products is the only sustainable way forward. Good for the planet - good for the pocket. It's a win-win!

I just began to go to thrift stores to look for shoes after binge-watching and being inspired by your videos. Now I have completely switched up my style from joggers and sneakers to jeans and a nice (well, used but with some TLC as shown in your videos) pair of leather shoes. I even raided my garage closet for some leather shoes my dad stored for a very long time just to rejuvenate those shoes. Scuffs? REJUVENATED. Minor to moderate wear and tear? REJUVENATED. It's incredible how many shoes I've given life to again in the past 3 weeks because of this new skill I learned from you.

I absolutely love Steve and Andy: hard to beat their deals on truly quality AE footwear. I too highly recommend them.
So obviously, I don’t mind used- especially when I can trust the quality like that of what I can expect from “dabondo1”, yet I do buy new as well: especially when the manufacturers put on their great sales. Most recently was the case, as I picked up a pair of the limited production AE Hamilton Boot, which was $100 off.

Outstanding as usual! I think many people feel that it is beneath them to buy 'used' shoes as though it was an intimate object and steeped in hygienic danger! LOL. I have recently experimented buying a used vintage pair of spectators in light brown and off white canvas inspired by your channel and Kirby Alison's along with a few great cobbler restoration UA-cam. For around $40 for the pair, new laces, new heel block pads and diligent and patient Saphir conditioning and polishing I find myself the proud owner of a unique pair of shoes in great restored shape for a fraction of the cost of sourcing a new pair out. I am now a believer and what a great way to save huge money and customizing your colors and shines, thanks for the inspiration.

Mens dress clothing in general is a good buy at a thrift store. I can find plenty of decent quality, ptactically new dress shirts and pants that I can have tailored for less than the same item new. Or in the case of all the white dress shirts I buy, dyed to whatever color I like.
And I've purchased several pairs of used shoes from thrift shops and estate sales.

An awesome video. I was hoping someone would post a video with tips on buying used. I would like to see more about what to look for. How will I know the shoes can be re-soled. Yes, I would buy used shoes like these in a heartbeat. I have never had truly nice shoes in my whole life. I am 61 years old. When I was young I always looked for quality shoes. I had some but not much luck. I always thought a person should dress nice. How do you know if the shoes will fit you? I wear from Size 8 to size 9-1/2. I hope you post more videos like this. I thank you for sharing your thoughts on the video. I truly hope you have a Blessed Week.

My shoe size is Mens 10C. I'm an old guy, and 35-50 years ago, 10C was a common size, however, over subsequent generations, feet have gotten larger and wider, and statistically C width shoes sales have declined, have generally been discontinued, or very limited production over the past 15-20 years. I go to Ebay because there are 10c older shoes available, a favorite being pre -1990 Florsheim Brogans, but have also scored really nice AEs and Aldens.

I recently purchased a pair of A. Testoni’s at a Goodwill in Jacksonville Florida. I could not believe the condition of the shoes when I purchased them. I would really appreciate your opinion on the make of the brand.

First I just want to express my thanks for this video and for sharing some of your secrets. I feel that this week I've somehow been born again. I've always been into shoes. I enjoy shining and taking care of them. I like that my shoes are a few years old and that they still look great. My only issue is that I can't just buy a brand new pair of shoes whenever I want to. They can be pricey.
I never considered buying used shoes ever. The thought just never crossed my mind, until recently. I have just realized how one could acquire pre-owned ties, button down shirts, cufflinks, and even great quality shoes. A whole new world has opened for me. As of this writing I have a pair of pre-owned Ballys dress shoes that I paid peanuts for and that are worth a few hundred at retail. The shoe looks in great condition. To be honest, I don't even mind a few scuffs here or there if the price is right. This gives me an opportunity to see how I can restore it. I now have a few shoes in my wish list that I plan on buying. I don't know when I'll ever buy shoes new again.

I purchased a pair of walnut Strands off EBay for $265, likely never worn. They're beautiful, fit great; that was a steal. I love 'em.

@@TheElegantOxford The Strand and the McAllister are my favs. I have three pair of the former, four of the latter. And they're both built on the 65 last. I just wish AE made a dress boot like the Dalton off that last in a Triple-e width. Maybe someday. Keep up the great work, TEO.

I'm up to 8 pair of preowned AE's. I may have a problem. But I love it.

Inspired by this video I just bought a pair of Florsheim Imperials in nice shape for less than $50 on eBay. I'm an AE guy but I'm looking forward to trying out a pair of classic Florsheims.

I usually buy preowned good year welted shoes cause it’s the only way I can get it, here in Honduras don’t sell a good quality shoes such Allen Edmonds in any other place than the local thrift store MegaPaca is where I found my Strands for $8😎😁

Right on! I've been doing this for years. Once I realized virtually any pair of Allen Edmonds in 10.5E would fit me beautifully, it was a no-brainer. I have several pairs of AE now, only two pairs of which were bought new. One of the used pairs were the Sheltons you show at around 3:00. :D I also have a couple of beautiful pairs of vintage Florsheim Imperial long wings, including the pebble-grain you show at the beginning. This is the only way to get these gorgeous shoes, as Florsheim is not what it once was, sadly. Cheers!

Great video. Would love to see a part two that dives into other brands to look for, especially if they are vintage or off the beaten path. Everyone knows AE, or Crockett and Jones, and such. But, eg., I’ve never heard of the vintage brand mentioned in the early part of the video. And I’m sure there are other brands I’d want to know about but don’t know exists.

Love the pre owned route. But my size is not easily purchased this way. I have had a lot of luck working with Sales Associates in Outlet AE stores. I scored a Chester and a Special reverse Kudu HM. Both of these less than $100 each. Special make ups in those stores are also awesome.

I loved this video. I had the same idea and recently bought a pair of Allen Edmonds from ebay at a total cost of less than $30. The shoes arrived and are in splendid condition. The only problem, they don't fit. Although they are factory marked as 10D they are much too small and seem to be no more than a size 9. Do Allen Edmonds shoes run small? I've never heard a mention of this.

Almost exclusively pre-owned. Thrift stores, eBay, and PoshMark are my general hunting grounds. I actually prefer to show a little wear (no mirrors) and constantly change laces; so a nice gentle shine on clean uppers is all I want.
