This is the complete rebuild of a roof on a 300 year old property in France using traditional materials including oak beams and hand made clay tiles. The project took about 3 months to complete with 2 people working on it almost full time.
I'm really enjoying the sounds without music. Much more enjoyable!
Hey, I'm happy to hear that you like Ryan's Shed Plans. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBE-xSmFU7PIaMFUmmhnFxE035s5svtxeIt's a cool guide that shows you how to build any kind of shed you want. It has all the stuff you need to know, like what materials and tools to use, how to plan and design your shed, and how to put it all together. It also has tons of pictures and diagrams of different shed types and styles, so you can see what they look like and how to make them. Ryan's Shed Plans is awesome, because it makes shed building fun and easy. You can have your own shed in no time. cool
Your local timber mill must love it seeing you drive up. The amount of timber you have used in this restoration project must be enormous.
looks like all oak too

I have no idea why I am nodding sagely as I watch this with a drink in my hand, the only thing I really understand is using upturned crates as sawhorses. Just incredible to watch the scope of what you are doing as a family team.
Beautiful work! Future generations will see the high quality of your work and marvel at your attention to detail, the precision of your cuts, the quality of the material, the reuse of roofing tiles, and the integration of the roof to the existing roof. All of these are a credit to you and your team! Again, well done!!
wow so much words for 1 concrete hack job LoL
This was nothing short of an absolute work of art in so many ways. From the time-lapse photography
to the mindful inclusion of capturing the building inspector,(house cat) on the job. A genuine lesson in planning and execution. A lot of blood sweat and tears no doubt. We all saw the "wasted" fingernail....
those are THE most insane/stupidly painful injuries.....EVER!!! Very impressive use of everyday hand tools. The best tool used here had to be located above the shoulders. Great Job!
No music & no talking just a good Video, very good Craftsman skills 👍
One trick I was taught by old timers was to use beeswax on the screws in timber. It lubricates and protects the metal, and prevents overheating.
Yup always carried a bar of soap when doing GRKs over 6"
@@mikebravo3527
The advantage of wax over soap is that the heat melts the wax and bonds it to the metal, forming a very long lasting protective coating on the fastener, while soap can contribute to fastener degradation in the long run. You can buy tubes of cutting wax used in machine shops if you want a convenient way to carry and dispense the wax, just a spiral wound cardboard cylinder that can be peeled away as needed. I just prefer beeswax because it smells good.

Nice job...I've restored old house, and I realize you made it seem easy, but it is NOT easy. I love seeing younger folks still doing it. We need more people like YOU and your philosophy.
That didn't look easy at all!
Absolutely fantastic job. I particularly enjoyed the roof woodwork, ie, replacement of original beams with the mortice joints and pinning. I own an old farmhouse in West Wales that I have renovated to what I believe is a high standard and have to replace roof on cow sheds to make the building watertight and useable for a business so I was particularly impressed with this video. Excellent, thank you.
Good job! I’m a Portuguese stonemason the only thing I would do different is the concrete lintel not as wide as the stonewall so then you can continue the exposed exterior stone wall up to the roof eave!
Where are you based?
@@RobIn-ky4uz New Jersey USA
@@joelfernando2031 that's too bad I thought silver coast maybe. Moving to Portugal soon and will be buying/restoring an old Portuguese house.
@@RobIn-ky4uz nice I’m from the north it’s a lot of granite and yellow slate houses! Just be cautious removing any internal walls on those houses most of them are used as a bearing wall as well as a stabilizer wall support for the exterior walls!
@@joelfernando2031 my wife is from the north Porto. Thanks for the tips.
Nice work, really enjoyed watching the process. I do wish you had painted with tar the end of the purlin you concreted into the wall or added some type of membrane around the wood to keep it from being in contact with the masonry. Same for your top plate sitting on top of the masonry wall.
This video is worthy of an Oscar ! Absolutely captivating. If you have kept a record of the full restoration surely you guys MUST have enough material for a book or DVD. Many thanks and good luck you inspire people !
It's encouraging to see young men working with their hands and BUILDING something of lasting value, rather than sitting around exercising their thumbs on their phones. Hat's off to the editor of this video as well. Impressive work.
Really enjoyed the basic technical bits, “this bit’s the tenon, this is the line of the pitch angle”. For those of us without trade skills it made it more fascinating along with a learning experience
Well produced, clear and informative. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing the movie. It really helps me understanding the structure of an old property's roof. Outstanding! I've watched this whole clip. 3 months must have been rough time.
I can definitely see experience in making the tenon / mortise joints, especially rounding the edges to facilitate the assembly. Great work in general, thanks for the dedication and the sharing of this beautiful family project
I think the cat did a fantastic job of supervising the entire project. Nice to see they were prepared to get their paws dirty rather than just "meowing" out the orders.
haha
rebuilt a roof similar to this in the south of france in the early 80's so i fully understand the difficulties you faced, top job mate well done

Hello Mr. Carl. To tell the true I was definitely delighted to watch satisfying crafted carpentry and roofing work. You are very talented and passion person. Thank you for sharing your work. I can not wait for another your work episode.
I’m now beginning to understand how the Egyptians built the Pyramids! Holly cow. Amazing skill.
I was feeling so proud of myself after fixing one roof corner & part of a gable & then I saw this. This craftsmanship is another level. Are you guys pro?
vinyltap cutting grass with a fork still on top good try though.)
That is some real work right there I love this video remind me of growing up working with pops in the construction field grouchy old man but very honest and very hard-working good all days 👍👍up
We don't do much tile work here in 'New England USA". Tiles tend to be fragile in our climate yet I have done close to 10 restorations using them.
Maintaining the character of historic construction in this day and age is truly a lost art. Nice job of blending modern materials and techniques with seemingly ancient hand carved construction. Your ancestors would be amazed that such a small crew could build so much so quick.
Great video, I wish I'd seen it a few months ago as just had our roof done. A french roofer did it for us, just the tiles, membrane and replaced most of the chevrons. In hindsight we should have renewing the ring beam etc but it will probably out live us. 😊
I watched your videos as you did this and put them out. I really appreciate this complete version. Excellent job all the way around.
Love it! No idle chatter or loud rock music. Just get job done. Perfect.

Spectacular work again. I know thousands of people, who call themselves carpenters, that wouldn't know even how to lay-out what they need to cut to make those angles let alone actually make those cuts. Beautiful. Stay safe!
Really nice work, done with care and love. I really like to see how you guys put hard work to something most of other see just a old junk. We all must take care of our history and preserve as much we can. All the best.

love how the depth gauge is also your center line when making those mortises with a piece of tape. very efficient work good job!

I haven’t done one inch of the work but feel so satisfied of a job well done!
You are truly an artist at your trade. Kudos on the fast forward. Looking forward to more of your work.
An absolute joy to watch. Your skill is amazing and I'm only slightly envious.
I love this project and the video! Subscribed and hope to see many more! Thanks for uploading!
The experience of recovering ancient tiles first of all, then following the restoration of the old wood and the new one is formidable! Very good in the out-of-roof finishes, in the drainer part and tricks of real skill. As they say in Rome, you are strong!

sorry for the google translation!
Traditional quality with the clever use of modern tools. A joy to watch you work 😀👍👌
I gotta say.. Thank you guys so much for all this content. I know what I know but from your videos I've learned more. And yes, if you're not making mistakes, you're definitely not learning. And one for you too, in regards to your finger. NEVER put your hands or body parts into a space if you're unsure you're going to get them back!
Amazing job. Thanks for filming the work.
Good to see you back. Excellent workmanship. When you're finished come and do mine please 😀

This is awesome. I didn't know so many of the tiles was used to build a roof.
Getting dry lumber is difficult.
Nice work! Excellent craftsmanship👍👍👍pragmatic and getting it done with great outcome.
Talented, and well done, that’s something you can be proud of.
Excellent work. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad to see someone else do work with regular shoes, not heavy work boots.
I have the same shoes actually...funny coincidence.
I'm hoping to do some building someday. This is great inspiration.
Good Job! and the sound of the rain is perfect! thank you!
Nice to see it done. Great work.
Very cool! When you are driving longer screws you can use a bit of bar soap to lube the threads FYI. Thanks for sharing !
great tip, thanks
Us old carpenters just put the screw in our hair for some lube. (lol) :)
Suggestion for you. When you drive in big lag screws, coat them with hand bar soap. They will spin easily right into the wood.
Very nice. Something you can be proud of and will last another 300 years.
Wonderful stuff. I really enjoyed watching how you work and the end result is fantastic. I especially like how you clamp everything before fixing to ensure accuracy and a tight fit.
Very well done...not boring..the repetitive boring stuff went into fast forward...interesting bits shown properly....
Mistakes highlighted.... learnt a lot. Thanks.... Eddy
Enjoyed watching the whole 'show'. Wonderful job and very professional.
Schönes Projekt.

Bit of a silly reaction, isn't it?
Otherwise it's a very nice job, btw.

Excellent work ma dude! I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I will say, though, I wish I could've seen the completely finished product with the double doors installed, as well.
To complete it you can put a big tank and collect rain water for the garden. All that water is precious 💗☔
Big pice of work, as the roof, as video. I love people, who is building old style buildings and renovating old stuff. Big thubs up for you.
Awesome to see the next generation carry on these techniques, even with the hard work they entail.

I have nothing about building, but I appreciate watching such as amazing hard work. Congrats from Brazil!
Just finished watching your very interesting video and admire your skills and work ethic. Also like the format of little notes for information and no dialogue - so refreshing, keep it up
My wife and I are nearing completion of a barn conversion in the Charente and the only job we let someone else do was the roof - all 260 sq m. Just to much at 72 years young.
We are 7 years into a 3 year project and enjoying every minute of it !!
We have put some big oak beams like yours inside the building and like you used the original structure to raise some fairly meaty beams. with a 2 tonne chain block, sometimes single handed. Where there's a will there's a way !! Green oak is great to work with and I used manly hand tools like you.
We have tried wherever possible to use lime mortar/concrete as these old buildings like to breath.
I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to having a look at your other videos.
Great woodwork! As a total noob I'm pleasantly surprised that you didn't fill the caverns with wood glue before inserting the supports! :-)
Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE if you liked the video! ------ And for those wondering:
- The walls will be lime rendered eventually, and so the concrete ring beam and block work will be covered.
- The roof was asbestos, I should’ve taken more precaution.
- The old beams were rotten and needed replacing, they were then used in making units for the kitchen so didn't go to waste!
carlrogers what country is the barn in?
Would you happen to know where Mike Parsons is today? I doubt he will be able to remain a free man for long.
Who is mike parsons and what does this topic have to do with him?
Asbestos sheets are really dangerous and they should be treated accordingly! In Greece (for example) it is illegal to remove them without having a specialized team of workers and without having ensured where they are going to end up (these panels have to be handled/processed with extra protective measures)... It should be noted though that it is not that harmful if you simply remove them as it is when breaking them into smaller pieces! Last but not least... Very nice video!!! :-)
Bummer, asbestos....!Yes, this can be nasty shit...
I’m sure it’s been said but these videos are just a delight. I wish I had these skills!
Parabéns! Excelente trabalho. Ficou maravilhoso! Para sempre!
That roof is beautiful bro.Props to you and your dad.

I bought a relatively old farm. I can't count the number of times people said "just flatten everything with a cat tractor. You can always build new buildings, you can't build old.
