In this video we install a modern zinc gutter system onto a traditional French farmhouse. To buy brackets off the shelf was really expensive relative to the total amount of roof we have on the farm, so we decided to fabricate the brackets ourselves. Next we drilled a load of holes in the wall, set up some string lines and got to work. A few drill bits were snapped along the way but other than that, we had no major problems.
Let me know below how you fix gutters in your area, any positive or negative thoughts you have about this way!
It absolutely amazes me how much you know how to do at such a young age. Your dad must have been teaching you by the time you could walk. I love watching your videos.
Have to agree with you 100%. Carl can be a chippy, a sparky, a plumber, a roofer, a car mechanic.... et i'l peut faire tout en Francais! Formidable, mon brave.
On a restoration project such as this, saving money by devising ways to do the job yourself & improvising is the best option. You are doing that & seem to manage it in a way that gets the job done efficiently & is eye appealing. Nice work!
A real pleasure watching you two men work. And a genuine learning experience, too. Jolly good.
Hello from the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful gutter system you have there! We are on year 5 of a similar gutter (6” / 15 cm half round galvanized steel) install (father and son installed). The only difference is that we have are using rain chain instead of downspouts. We get a tremendous amount of precipitation here - 167 days a year on average . We have had 2 snow/ ice storms of 18” (45 cm) or greater accumulation since install and several windstorms of 50+mph (80+ kph). I am pleased to report the gutters still hold tight and have not needed any repairs. All joints are riveted and sealed with gutter mastic. You should anticipate a long happy life with your gutters😀👍 Fantastic channel have created. You and your dad make a good team. Keep up the good work. PS- still looking for the metric conversion factor for “days”.
"nights"?
Carl I'm loving this stuff, excellent work👍. I started working on old farm buildings with my uncle when I was 11. Some demolished and replaced with new large modern structures, others refurbished as it depended what the intended use was. Also cast sillage pits, cattle crushes and concreted lots of the farmyard as the winter weather in NW Ireland is ultra wet!! All via a mixer on the back of the tractor AFTER drawing the sand and gravel via trailer (all shovelled on) from local ancient beach areas (licenced). Uncle still farms it nearly 50 years later. We worked extremely hard but had great fun, your videos brought amazing memories back for me. It nearly killed my auntie trying to feed us as we were burning so many calories every day. 👍👍👍
ROCKON ....and...in the evening...no problem to sleep!!! cheers from north Italy
These videos bring me joy. You've inspired me to find an old place and restore it. I've learned from you.
I think you guys are brilliant and inspiring. I have not watched all the videos yet, but I do think though that your younger sister deserves some mentioning from time to time.
i watch almost all the vids and are left with respect towards the craft and patience
Carl I think we need to build small houses for the birds' nests. It will make a good movie.
Thanks for the motivation, I live in a small town. Where people started living from 1152 . The village grew into a town in 1781. There are very few old houses, many have been destroyed by wars
Hanging a plumb line down the wall to ensure the down spout is straight - simple genius! It's the easy things that everyone misses.
I love this beautiful, simple half-moon design. Clean and simple
No better Hop-up, saw bench, cuppa seat, than an old beer crate 👌
Hi,
It’s always nice to follow project.
It’s a pleasure to listen to you. Easy to follow. I’m not English.
How many are you in the family?
Looking forward to next episode.
Thks a lot
Louis
I've been going through your entire playlist : your videos are very soothing as a background while I'm working! Your voice-over, the nature sounds, you working and the wind chimes combine in the most wonderful way. Thank you!
I realise I'm super late to this video, but why aren't birds welcome to roost under the roof tiles ? The entire construction seems so solid that one nest can't really damage that, right?
Restoring the farm must feel to some types of birds like a restoration of their habitat, no?
Haha, months later, I had the exact same thought. I think I may have tried to block it with enough room left for a few wee birdies!
Same we can only buy black / white plastic at B&Q in the UK - great work looks quality in my opinion
Won’t get better with the Brexit ;)
That house is getting so much prettier, wonderful job. Wish you the best 👍👍👍
much appreciated :)
I have to hand it to you, your workshop has the best conditions to realize ideas.
I only have a modest little one to show for it - but for my needs it's quite enough.
Maybe this year at Christmas there will be one or the other woodworking machine
as a gift.
Soothing to watch your work... and listen to your voice!
This was smartly designed and beautifully built.
The gutter system looks simple but elegant. Nice work.
Quality craftsmen yet again!
I hope the silicone that you are using is compatible with the tin of the gutters. The downpipe brackets are brilliant, Ive used them before and would recommend them to anyone.
Beautiful job ! Great attention to Detail . Two masters
As thorough as possible. Top job. F all straight in an old French place.😮
cheers fella
I NOTICED ON THE 54 PLUS MINUTE IT REALLY"TOOK OFF"! CONGRATS ON 6 MILLION VIEWS AND GROWING!!
Great! I was just looking for a video like this one to learn about how to do it too!
Thank you and greetings from Portugal.
good luck!
If I may make a suggestion 1. Lightning Rod on the Roof tied in to the gutter system and than a ground stake in the ground 2. Keep up the great Work.
I think you should have soldered the joints rather than riveted, those rivets will not last. That is how I learnt of my French roofer. I think the reason they do it is because in France they get heavy rain and you will be surprised at how much pressure builds up. Nice video series!
Very nice job ...thanks for sharing it with us ....Karim from Algeria
Beautiful patient work mate, wish metal guttering was so readily available here in Uk.
A little oil which you clean off later with acetone would go a long way to keeping your drill bits intact. Simply sleeving the threaded bar into a tube/pipe would give you a way to adjust the guttering horizontally, as well. Consider patenting that guttering method and selling it as a kit on-line. It's incredibly useful for all sorts of buildings.
thats a nice idea. might have to steal it!
@@carlroge steal away. It'd be an honour seeing that little idea go in to production.
I need to install gutters on my old farm in 2 weeks. This will help for sure. Thanks ! Subscribed.
Get some local advice - this video is not 100% right!
@@julianlecircle3674 Bit late to ask, but which bits?
Nice work👍🏻
what a complex fastening system you got.
This looks good, for now. I hope it doesn't snow where you live... or rain to much.... or get too windy.
Lovely bit of lateral thinking. If you can't buy what you want, then make it. Well done.
especially when you know its a rip off
@@carlroge It is doubly difficult when product is readimade and doesn't or can't be adapted for your situation. The joy of your guttering is that it was malleable unlike the plastic stuff for domestic use in the UK. Some friends of mine have a house near Malaga where rain gutter is never fitted. An after market product is used that clamps on the roof tile edge which is fine until the tiles fail. Your job looks in keeping with the age of the house and will age accordingly.
Looks like there’s a bigger gap than necessary between the tool rest and the wheel on your bench grinder, check your owners manual and close the gap for safety sake.
Love your channel, you do great work.
I'm interested to see how the mastic joints work out as I've not had good results. Ended up soldering the old fashion way (and learnt a new skill! 😀).
Cannot solder aluminium to galvanised
Just caulk your seam in the gutter no one will see it and the water will go right over it
@@waynedrummond6583 there are some great products out there now Super Alloy 1 will solder aluminium to galvanised steel
@@waynedrummond6583 its all zinc used here in France, I've soldered hundreds of joints on zinc gutters
Another outstanding project
That seems fine and dandy for the thin light rain, but what about when it gets thicker in the winter and doesn't run so easy
Really nice commentary 👌 very enjoyable
Wot - no soldered joints?
The guttering supports are also normally driven into the genoise to be closer to the roof tiles
Muchas gracias por enseñarnos tanto Carl. Un saludo
I believe I have watched all of your videos. Bu at the end of this gutter rinstallation you mentioned connecting the downpipes to a 100 year old underground water tank.. Did you ever make this video? I did not find it. Many thanks.
Back again, finally. Awesome 😎
sorry for the delay!
Very nice job you guys work very hard
I love your video’s! I learn a lot about your techniques👍😃
I'm amazed you got a hole saw to bore through tin and only broke two pilot bits!
A great lesson! That's how gutters are made for 200 years. (Only silicone will not last that long) ...
Nice, good old days all joints would have been soldered, now that would have been fun
“More drilling was done, and more holes were made.“ lol
thoughtful & thorough work.
Sir, your vision, your planning and advice with the help of your good team is on another level. I see bringing the past into the present and future! {Awesome skill level}!
Thanks for posting and sharing. Looking fwd to seeing more of your episodes.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing your work with us. One suggestion: I think it is easier to cut the hole for the downspout in the gutter by just cutting into it with a hacksaw and then using tin snips (metal cutting shears) to cut the hole. In my opinion this is a better (less dangerous and cleaner) approach than using the hole saw on an electric drill.
Mooi gemaakt en weer een top job 💪👌👍🤩 Groetjes uit Holland 👋🏼👋🏼
It looks astheticlly pleasing but the silicone stuff will eventually leak. The scope is an automatic level or dumpy level
Sehr schön , gut gemacht .
Fantastic craftmenship well done
Love Dad's bracelet
Ask Santa for a pair of tin snips , great job on the install
Use all .07 zinc and solder. Also need expansion joints every 3 mts.
I like your work. God bless you.
It is very nice work, I like it
2:29 there are some mirrored shots there, if I'm not mistaken.... i wonder what might be going on there^^
Outstanding!!
You guys deserve the gutter fabrication & installation Nobel Prize !!
No just no. Source : 3 year roofing aprenticeship and licensed roofer in germany
Would there be any point in making the gutter ever so gently angled so to ensure the water flows downhill ? Sorry just asking. Great vid.
Nice work! I’m guessing there is no danger of a snow load there. In my area the supports would be insufficient with snow and ice over the winter months. Curious what the gutters are made of? Galvanized tin or ???
Excellent work
Thanks a lot, it was worth the waiting.
thanks
great work
Lime pointing is where it is at!!!
Awesome vid. Great work.
Wonderful video
Awesome work and video thank you👍
cheers
Great craftsmanship. Well done indeed!
ottimo lavoro io avrei optato per un canale piu grande comunque bravi
Very enjoyable to follow your steps and meticulous work, excellent result!
I saw Xylocopa violacea (carpenter bumblebee) so that it does not gnaw the new roof (rafters), you can leave the old beams with drilled holes at a distance from the house. I apologize for my English
great video. It is a shame you had to block off the beautiful Lime Concrete craftsmanship. Thank you for making the statement at the very end about recycling the water.
I much prefer the metal rain system that's common in the rest of Europe. There's too much upvc shite in Ireland and England. Nice job lads, perfect fall on it. Just a pity the gutters couldn't go a bit closer the the eve tile, might allow heavy rain to over shoot.
Save the water water is very scarce here in the United States
Nerd comment: this is rod, not bar. I should have liked to see how you calculated the angle of run-off, especially as the gutter seems a long way down from the over-shoot. Will it work in high winds?
Great job!
...cant find the water tank video, mentioned at the very end of this one... Nice work btw.

A beautiful job.
Ótimo trabalho!
Parabéns!
(Nice job , congratulations!)
cheers
Is this system sturdy enough for the water levels of that size roof. I mean the pins in the wall holding the cutter doesnt look that solid? It trends to be windy around barns too.
beautiful house, beautiful job, what else ?? Bonne continuation pour les travaux!
You need a cordless Milwaukee grinder with a 6" metal cutting wheel makes life alot easier
I can imagine every Frenchman with his head in his hands saying quel con, it's supposed to be soldered, obviously, be interesting to see how it holds up with a full storm blowing but either way looks good👍
I went off to look up 'quel con', as I hadn't heard that one. That was an eye-opener! lol
Why not copper? In Tuscany where I was born and in Italy they are also used for the restoration of historic buildings
Thanks for your video, very nice
Copper gutters are very VERY expensive in my country probably the same in his. Copper also oxidise and turn brown and splotchy
Hola !! Excelente trabajo Felicitaciones 👏👏👏❤🏡
There is a trick to half round gutter. If you twist it, you can feed the bead of one piece into the other without notching for the lap. You could have punched a hole in the gutter with an awl and cut it with tinsnips in about a tenth of the time it took to hook up a drill and hole saw. And why didn't you solder your seams? Zinc solders perfectly. That said, your brackets are ingenious. I have nothing but respect for your level of craftmanship. But let a tinsmith do the metal work, 'eh?
I really enjoyed these videos. Living in Canada, I rarely see these types of roofing systems. Well done. I hate to be that guy but you were using an engineers level. Theodolites measure vertical and horizontal angles.
This is high quality roofing and will easily last over a century. For sure you will never see that in Canada where roofs fall apart after 15 years.
@@paname514 The minimum contractor grade roofing shingles are 20 years here in Canada. You buy shingles that will last up to 40 years.
@@vitocatella5244 In reality normal shingles last about 15 to 20 years.
I don't buy the "40 years shingles" advertisement - the manufacturer will expect you sell the house before that and that you will never know.
It's nothing compared to tiles, metal and slate.
I spotted that too, called a dumpy level here in the UK definitely not a theodolite
Good Job!
Love the work. Were there gutters on the building at anytime before, are you replacing or installing? I've heard of old buildings cracking after installing gutters that weren't there previously because it can modify the surrounding ground structure.
It is a beautiful house………………. In which country is this house and in what place and how old is the house?
