Nice review Andrew, very comprehensive and real-world. Enjoyed the wife’s perspective and even more the son in the back-seat making sure he was in shot. Would probably be good to see some long road trips with the family to see how it copes, for example is it suitable for a fully loaded camping trip? But appreciate this would take considerable planning and buy-in from the whole family. Nice work.
Thanks for the kind words! We are actually going away this week so will do a vlog of a longer road trip and see how it holds up, thanks for the suggestion.
I heard someone describe the look of the MG5 EV as the vanilla ice cream of cars. It is the least exciting flavour, but it really isn't bad. I felt it was quite fitting.
Yes definitely! However there is something quite exciting about how 'good' the basic budget option is, I love the MG5 and how it has given me access to a long-range EV without the huge cost involved in other vehicles.
Good review. I agree with you about most points. I also upgraded to an MG5 because of ULEZ. The MG5 is just big enough and has enough range to tick all my must have EV boxes. Paying no congestion charge is also very handy. I don't find Android Auto too laggy but it could definitely be better. I find driving my MG5 is like owning a cloaking device. It's so plain and normal that it just slinks into the background. Nobody notices it.
Yes it just about ticks my boxes - just enough range and size for my needs right now. Perhaps if MG upgrade a few things (an app, MG Pilot, etc) then it'll be worth switching. No congestion charge is great, I've applied for it through TFL however they say it'll take two weeks to process so will need to wait. No road tax and free parking permit in Islington also great perks too for EV ownership now. MG cars are probably the rarest EV brand in the UK right now as they are relatively new to the market. However it would be very tough for a member of the public to pick out an MG5 as they blend in so well!
I would check out whether you need to service it at an MG dealership. Most cars’ warranty is valid as long as you service it with a company that is VAT registered and use the cars genuine parts (service pack). It should mean it’s cheaper for you 👍
Good review, the kids are a credit to you. I’ve just got one ordered I get it on Friday. I think you are spot on with your observations. Great value for a straightforward practical car. I think the MG will be the Skoda/ Kia of the future. They were laughed at initially but not any more and MG will be the same
Thanks for the comment! MG may eventually become more respected in the future for making a solid product. However I hardly ever see MGs on the road here in London, I’ve only spotted one MG5 (a taxi) and several MG ZSs so they have a long way to having any kind of reputation at all in the UK!
In depth review covered all the major points to look out for admirably well. As a basic family electric car at a base level, nothing can touch it in terms of value and functionality at this time. Granted several items need a tweak to bring them up to expectations, other than that, can not fault it. It gets from A to B without poluting the environment in a acceptable manner. EVs should really take off after this trend setter comes to town! Like it or lump it, I like the MG 5 ev.
This is an excellent review. We're just on the edge of the October ULEZ and are looking to get an EV to replace our much-loved Skoda Yeti diesel. The issue we've always had with the Yeti is the fairly small boot, so this would be a step-up. Also, most of our miles are done on East London commutes (8 miles a day), with the occasional trip to Wales. I think the MG5 will suit my family of 4 down to the ground, and the recently added MG Pilot will help the gadget count. It'd be nice to see the European face-lifted model make it to our shores.
No particular impressions as to whether or not it makes the grade as an estate car? Kind of important, I feel, it being the only BEV estate on the market. Will it disappoint people who are used to existing ICE estates and want a BEV equivalent of (say) a Passat, Insignia, Mondeo....or is it just a size step up from the swarm of electric hatchbacks?
Hi. I would really like to know what the kwh rate is while charging from a rapid charger. The zs ev tops out at around 36kwh which is a little slow if you are on a long journey. I'm hoping that if the mg5 is above 20% charge it will hit at least 50kwh or more hopefully. If you find yourself at a rapid charger and have the inclination, please give it a try and report back. Thanks!!
Thanks, I've actually not yet charged this on a rapid charger at all yet, done everything on the 3-pin so far, it might be quite a while before I get to test out a rapid charger.
Great video. I, too, have a family based in inner London and would be interested in how you get on with the MG 5 EV as a family car and day-to-day life including parking, economy, luggage capacity and also national road trips, holidays etc.
Thanks, I am editing my London to Somerset trip video still (Spoilers: got there with 33% battery spare in one go!) will address other suggestions in possible future videos.
@@Andytizer That's fantastic. Look forward to seeing how you got on. If you could put in details such as cost of electricity at public chargers and also how you charge up when at home that would be really informative. Many thanks for the prompt reply.
@@matthewjburt6482 I have posted my MG5 trip from London to Somerset video here ua-cam.com/video/HJQjxgO5CmQ/v-deo.html - I am planning to do others in the future regarding charging and also accessories, hope that helps!
Just watched the video and I was really impressed how the 5 coped with the holiday with little fuss. Having convenient 3-pin charging from the holiday home was a game changer there. Would having to rely on public chargers changed anything about the holiday? How widespread were chargers in that part of Somerset?
Thanks for enjoying my video, I'm also an EV noob! Yes the Type 2 charger is required for untethered charging (most public chargers). I actually haven't used mine yet! I go into more depth about charging and battery life in my other MG5 videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLFbqxkNlqrHPss9QIDOy4uzGALnrJXjvF.html
Good review , I bought the Exclusive 2 months ago for £22795 plus £800 for paint and other options. it was a toss up with this and the ZS. I looked at other EV's but the price/range/ boot space and warranty, this came to be the best comprise. My first long road trip - a 300 mile trip I only needed one charging stop. this was on mostly on A roads and 80 miles of motorways keeping the speed down to 55- 60 mph - I manged to get 4.5 miles/kw , but on average it was 3.6 miles /kw. I agree with the dislikes - I would also add there is no software to control charging schedule , on a few occasions using a rapid charger it went up to 99% , when I misjudged the time it would take after returning from a coffee - it showed 224 miles range! That doesn't help with with longevity of the battery , however you can get a gadget - OVMS to remotely check the SOC ( but not control it) for £187 however the hassle of neatly concealing a box and a cable to a ODB2 port puts me off. . Overall I'm reasonably happy with the car, / the boot space for my hobbies - radio controlled model boats and planes makes it ideal . I was able to pay cash, but bank loans are cheaper than the 5% PCP that was being offered and only £8k trade in after 4 years I plan to sell it after 3 years with 4 years left on its warranty it will be interesting to see what it will be worth then. I hoping cars with over 300 mile range will be more affordable by then .
Thanks for the comment! I've seen lots of info on OVMS on MG ZS which has been in the western markets for much longer, however I don't see much benefit on MG5 especially when there's no app or any real control to be had over the car. Is the car being valued at only £8k after 4 years, seems kind of low! Anyway I'm loving the car now, I hope more 300+ mile cars come out soon with MG Pilot or adaptive cruise control/lane assist.
@@Andytizer That PCP quote was from Hendy franchise - they were trying to push me to take a PCP , but it looked like a awful deal and a 8k trade-in was insulting ! I'm glad your enjoying it . We recently moved to Cornwall from Bedfordshire so I'll be seeing friends and in-laws several times a year, this where I really save money.. Living near the coast a car dealer did advise having the car Waxoyl'ed due to salty sea air , and seeing a few people reporting ZS's suffering from light corrosion, I thought it best to have it done. It cost £93 from a local firm - its mainly the wheel arches they can only do, as the rest of the underside covered by the battery pack. I really wish it had adaptive cruise , normal cruise control is more of a pain requiring constant adjustment. I'm looking forward to the next MG with all those extra's the ZS has that's missing from this model.
Hi Watched your mg5 videos a few times Very informative and help me in making my ev decision I picked my mg5 exclusive long range up on Friday Just wondering if you could tell me the make and model of you phone holder and where you got it from it looks very strong and safe Thanks Ian 😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for that Yes picked it up just in time before the fuel crisis I also get to charge it for free at work 👍🏻 Loving it to bits Only got the long range so I can put a roof box on for when we go camping Cheers Ian 😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great vlog thank you. I had a Tesla tgen a ioniq which was amazing in comparison. I then got made redundant but now looking to return to an EV. Poss the Mg or the 28kw ioniq. Love the speed and size of the mg.
I would predict that the concerns about the Chinese branding will evaporate soon. Just as with Japan and South Korea yeas ago, the Chinese are catching up mighty fast with western tech. I thin this is the number 1 EV due to its spec and low cost. Its perfect.
Yes Chinese cars could easily come into good reputation, especially as China produces so many EVs for their home market. Also China is responsible for the newly updated eletric black taxi cabs too. Loving my MG5, as you say it's the right cost and spec. I will consider a newer car with MG Pilot in the future, if it comes at a decent price!
Probably one of the best car review videos I've seen in a long time. Great video.
MG Pilot now available on the MG5 EV Long-range. 👍🏻 Just bought an MG5 EV (214 mile range like yours). Very happy with it.
The most informative real world user review, would love to see more in the future
Thanks hopefully will do more in the future!
