James I really like that you let us tag along with your job. Looks like a new project is in store for you like converting a new MG as a service vehicle. Good luck and thanks for posting.
This video would have persuaded me to buy an MG5 if it weren't for one thing - I bought mine at the end of January. I do miss not having an app to set the climate control remotely like I did in the Leaf, but other than that this car is an improvement in every way and I love it. It's just no fuss, no drama all the car that I need.
Hi glad you are pleased with your MG. You say it is better than the Leaf in every way, yet some other commentators have said the Leaf is better built and much quieter. As someone who is contemplating changing current Leaf for the 62Kw one I'm interested in your thoughts. My current Leaf has been 100% reliable and not a squeak or rattle and since I park in a carpark I use the app a lot to preheat and check battery charge state as I'm retired and don't use the car every day.
@@jimf4748 I only had one Leaf and I've only had one MG, so this isn't exactly a massive dataset, but the Leaf had far more little squeaks and rattles; the brakes on the Leaf had a tendency to bind almost from day 1 if the car was left for more than a few days, the dashboard had a few squeaks as I drove, little things that were far from a showstopper, but not present at all in the MG. In terms of reliability my Leaf was also 100% with the only real fault being a failed tyre pressure sensor, but if you use the app a lot then be warned that it is a wrench to not have it. The other day was super hot here and I really would have liked to have set the aircon going on the car before going out. It's not a deal breaker, but I do miss it and there will never be an app for the MG because it has no connectivity to use one. There are some decent deals to be had on the 62kWh Leaf, but if you are spending that kind of money I would definitely advise looking into the Hyundai and Kai offerings, too. If you have any more specific questions then feel free to ask here or on www.reddit.com/r/mg5ev/
@@jimf4748 Jim, I bought my MG5 in December. I've never driven a Leaf but I'm familiar with the Zoe as my wife has a 65 plate 22kw model. The MG5 does not need preheating. Even when the windscreen is frozen, it takes only 2 or 3 minutes to fully defrost and heat the car. 200 miles in all weathers. A great car.
An excellent video demonstrating the capability of the MG5 as a working vehicle. I picked up my first EV on Saturday - a 2021 Hyundai Kona with 64kWh battery and the efficiency you've demonstrated in the video has been very reassuring! 👍

It’s just that my EV purchase had to be a long term thing and possibly the last car I ever buy. It was my retirement present to self and I went for the Kia e-Niro and am now 2 years and 42,000 km into that. We live in France and have to say the car has been superb so far.

Great Video James. (No dislikes! You don't often see that). Really impressed with the efficiency of the MG5. Compared with my ZS I struggle to hit 4m/kWh with careful driving.
Fantastic video and great to see more of the real-world EV sector that you are part of. For me, it's interesting to see how anything similar will pop up in Hong Kong as EV ownership grows. Subscribed.
Hi James ,just seem a video of the Rowie 5 facelift,Mg 5 is the same car ,new modern look car not 1990 passat look also fresh dash with floating screen and 250 miles on a charge ,coming late 2021/2022!😁😁😁
I'm a huge car enthusiast, BUT my main complaint about EVs and I commented on every review, are they are completely unpractical as a family vehicle because they have no luggage space. And anybody who has a newborn and a toddler know how important a big boot is. Untill now, thank you MG for remembering the average person with a family and kids, who doesn't care about 0-60 because I carry precious cargo. Safety, Space and ease of use in that order is what I look for
The Nissan Leaf has a much larger boot than the typical ICE family hatchbacks like the Golf, Focus or Astra. There are others too as long as you stay away from the superminis.
Thanks for the video. We have the MG ZS EV.. and had a 5 while it was in for a service.. The miles per kW was better in the 5. The big NO for us was the lip for loading...you can't fit a dog crate in the back as you can't open the crate doors unless you build up the floor. With 6 dogs, a dog walking, pet shop, and grooming salon we just could not getting rid of the ZS EV or our LWB Kangoo ZE... I will be selling our Leaf mind you.. it's way too small for our lot ... unless it's a vet run with one of the cats. We are aiming for a Rivian .... Great size for us and it tows too👍 A great alternative to a Land Rover Discovery IMHO 👍 All said and done I think the MG5 is great as an every day load lugger. I'm sure the vast majority of drivers would be very happy with one.. and it's WAY better than any ice alternative (unless you do 700 miles a day without stopping...lol)
That lip - and the back seats that don't fold flat - do put me off the car. It's such a shame as given they bought the remains of MG Rover they must have had access to the Rover 75/MG ZT Tourer design which was a far superior estate.
I didn't realise you did mobile servicing, I hope you get a good whack for driving all these miles! I have fitted a lot off EVCPs for the MG it seems really popular, although I don't think I would swap my e-nv200 for one? But then I have ladders, steps and trunking etc. Plus it's not got the headroom. Cheers
Great review, so much better to see a real world review than the normal contrived "real world" ones. London was smelling great within a couple of weeks of the start of the 1st lockdown but has returned to its normal smelly polluted state
This car tick all boxes for average European driver. Even range and price. Actually convinced me that MG5 is worth to have even if I live in apartment. Will think about it after a year or two when current car will EOL. VW should carefully look on MG5 and think about what they missed when they started ID model line.
Another Great informative video in a real life circumstances. I am so impressed with this car. It can carry a load along distance in comfort. If any taxi driver does not consider this instead of a diesel Skoda, they are truly foolish.
Interesting video. I realise this video was about what the MG5 is like in use, but a couple of things that put me off are the NCAP safety test results and some reports of rust on the MG ZS.
If looking at Ncap safety result just look at the occupant safety etc. Since two of the stars ive noticed pretty much depend on the safety systems (mg pilot in this case the mg5 doesn't have) but there usually annoying and get turned off by many anyway. Rust..only time will tell I guess.
I was convinced the first time you showed the MG, and for a EV from the Chinese, I can only say, well done mate absolutely great review and the jobs you do on EVs, I would really like to take someday the MG out for the coming event in Germany for a few days to drive the really E Cannonball, which is starting in September, but I have have to leave that for a couple more years, like I said great work, thanks and take care, lots of love from 🇨🇦
Another Ace video James.....can you give me the address of that customer who made your dinner.....It looked brill and I love batons & frothy coffees....I want to nip round there for mine :) (best I ever got (retired gas engineer) was tea, coffee and biccies :) )
Great video James! I test drove the MG5 in 2020 - great car but I wish aesthetically, MG had increased the wheel size by an inch or two. The wheels look as small as those on a new Vauxhall Astra estate. Also hope that MG produce a van version of this car. Also, note to self - don't buy a second hand Leaf!
Hi James & Kate. I have been swatting up on EVs this last month or so - watching every video on your channel from day one. It's been great to follow your journey on the road (literally) in electric vehicles and as a family. Thank you for sharing so much information and insight. My late Dad and I have had several MGs between us including two MGB GT V8s (one of which was the ex-Thames Valley Police demonstrator - GOF88L), a 2004 MG ZS, my old 2004 MG ZT-T which I decided I really didn't like and got rid fo it years ago, and the last one being a ICE MG3 which I drove for six months whilst Dad was receiving cancer treatment. I am very much supporting the MG community, in Dad's memory, through my work under the Artisan Intermedia banner. I am keen to switch back from my current workhorse Honda CR-V to an MG EV. The MG5 is keeping my attention as I have always loved estate cars and need enough space to throw my mobility scooter in now that I live with Multiple Sclerosis. Thank you again for the insight into the MG5.
The air in London is relatively clean compared to Sydney. There are no laws about diesel pollution and you often have trucks and vans running black smoke out the back with impunity. Last time I was in central London the air was pretty fresh, with the congestion charge doing what it is meant to do.
Apparently there is a facelifted version of the MG5 coming out later this year, it looks a bit sharper. Great video, very interesting to see a proper real world test, thanks for sharing.
Thanks James. Sounds really good. I seem to recall you thought the headllights were a bit underwhelming when you originally reviewed one of these a few months back. Having lived with a different vehicle for a bit have you had a chance to test them out and any thoughts?
@@Jamesandkate Merely replacing halogen bulb with LED bulb nowadays won't pass an MOT. So even if an MOT is a long way off on a new car, probably best to go with a brighter bulb not LED.
I use mine for my window blinds business . .Plenty long enough with all the seats stripped out. . Love the 85p PER WEEK running costs (Octopus GO , Zappi2 and solar) . Down from £30+ in a Skoda Octavia !!!!! Love it.
What efficiency are you getting from the Model3? Winter and Summer? Currently using an Ioniq28 doing a similar gig. 4 m/kWh Winter; 6 m/kWh Summer. Travel 100-200 miles daily. TM3 seems only potential replacement on efficiency front.
Hi James I have a question for you... do you know how to unlock power from an electric motor (or do you know anyone who can?)... I own a 2015 Golf GTE with the 100 hp electric motor, but when you choose the sports mode (GTE), the car only releases 50 hp. Apparently there is a company in Holland who can do this but it's not financially viable to take that route right now. Appreciate your response. Cheers Bob
Having both an MG 5 EV and ZS EV my preference is the MG 5, brilliant car for the money. Long journeys, motorway driving at 70 mph, the 5 just eats the miles. In my opinion and even without the toys like MG Pilot it is so much better than the ZS. Just one thing I do dislike, the left foot rest is a couple of inches to high for my liking. If I could get a good deal I would swap our ZS EV for a second 5 EV. 😉
Quite enjoyed the video, but couldn't help but notice you just use a heavy duty jack (Unless I missed a bit). Is it not worth having an axle stand for backup. Probably will never fail but it's worth having it
I think there's still some prejudice against Chinese vehicles. I think it n a few years they will be very good second hand value. I like the sports car concept they have produced. I never drive in London but when I worked there I would sometime go in on my motorcycle, even that was no quicker than the train. I have never understood the idea of driving in, nightmare.
Great video, I considered the MG5 when they first arrived and had a 24hour test drive and dismissed it in its present form because I missed the adaptive cruise control and I wasn't impressed with the poor headlights but this is making me have a rethink, what a workhorse it is.
Can you let us know roughly how much you spend at the pump as everyone talks about kilowatt hours but no one tells you the cost per When recharging. Great programme
Love these videos. Makes me worry a bit about our Leaf reduction gearbox. Still didn’t manage to change it 🤐 I considered the MG for ages until I saw one. Didn’t like the look at all and lack of safety features / adaptive cruise control / app made it a no go. You get what you pay for, and suppose in this case you get more than what you pay for to a degree but depends on what one wants to get.
How are you getting 4 Miles per kwh? I have a brand new 61kwh mg5 but only getting 3.6 and that's with being very conservative with heating and speed etc.
Hello, was this the MG 5 with the 52 kWh battery? I am waiting for the finance to be accepted and hopefully next week I will have my first electric family car 😁. PS: When I drive tested it I didn't what to go home without it 😁,it is amazing!!! Who what's to go electric just do a test drive and you will see you don't want to drive ICE ever again 😉 ❤️
Where did you get your training for EV Mechanic works out of curiousity? Did you get manufacturer training at some point to add to your general car mechanic skills/training you already had? Just thinking as it's all high voltage systems involved. What an amazing EV though, can only hope they consider bringing this to Australia but who knows guessing they have improved the issues that the ZS EV has. Over 200miles/charge as well, over 320km/charge any idea what the coefficient of drag is?
Have I misunderstood something here? 200+ miles on full charge at the start of week, just 2 days later down to under 190 miles predicted from a full charge. That would give me concern for the battery life.i
Thanks for a good review! If it do 200 mile (320 km) in rain it’s good but I would like it to do 285 miles to be on safe side in Swedish winter when you can expect up to 30% loss in battery capacity. Charging network is not brilliant where I live and my ageing parents live 100 miles down the road if you wonder why I need all that capacity. I do like the MG5 not being a SUV and hopefully with a reasonable price tag when they will start selling them here in Sweden in October.
I love the MG practically and range, but it looks like a car of 10 years ago. I have a Nissan leaf I would like to change my gear oil after watching this video. What ATF did you use when changing it ?
Just came across your channel, as someone who works in construction sites without electric chargers available and doing 230/250 miles often with car loaded with tools, materials and steps on the roof bar is it true the roof rails on the MG5 are not to be used to carry anything?
Glad you liked the coffee and rolls, if you are ever in the Gatwick area feel free to pop in for a coffee and quick charge again.
Thanks Bill, appreciated 🙏

You're correct, no app, not yet anyway. For price v performance the MG5 has it, but it's more about what suits you. Good luck.
Great review I have one I I am very impressed with mine glad to hear some one not make fun of the car as a few people have done thanks for the good review the cars are great cheers Gary
Great Video James. (No dislikes! You don't often see that). Really impressed with the efficiency of the MG5. Compared with my ZS I struggle to hit 4m/kWh with careful driving.
I've got a dislike now :-(
top episode , loved letting us tag along , more please
Great video! The leaf gear bits were shocking.
I know what you mean about London I had to go there last Wednesday. The relief when I got to the A3 and out of the traffic was immense.
Fantastic video and great to see more of the real-world EV sector that you are part of. For me, it's interesting to see how anything similar will pop up in Hong Kong as EV ownership grows. Subscribed.
Its great to see using the MG5 in this scenario, a lot of the other reviews are not so complementry
I test drove one late last year and I thought it was a superb car. does everything really well and appeared to be a very easy car to live with.
Great video James! I totally agree with you about the thought of living in London! To visit ok but live there no thank you! Cheers!
Hi James ,just seem a video of the Rowie 5 facelift,Mg 5 is the same car ,new modern look car not 1990 passat look also fresh dash with floating screen and 250 miles on a charge ,coming late 2021/2022!😁😁😁
Indeed. You'll see that here in 2022.
Roewe
what a great country. Constantly watered. No wonder it's luscious and green and fertile.
Safety, Space and ease of use in that order is what I look for
Great shout and so true 👍🏻
Great size for us and it tows too👍 A great alternative to a Land Rover Discovery IMHO 👍
All said and done I think the MG5 is great as an every day load lugger.
I'm moving out of UK soon, and I really wish it was available for purchase in the Baltics.
Right at the end of the video, it looked like the lady of the house had a beer or tea for you.
That was my customers wife. She had indeed made me a coffee.
Helpful feedback from replies. Thanks.
I was convinced the first time you showed the MG, and for a EV from the Chinese, I can only say, well done mate absolutely great review and the jobs you do on EVs, I would really like to take someday the MG out for the coming event in Germany for a few days to drive the really E Cannonball, which is starting in September, but I have have to leave that for a couple more years, like I said great work, thanks and take care, lots of love from 🇨🇦
Thanks for your comments
Great car, some great leasing deals on these I've noticed as well. 👍
You'll like the facelift model coming next year 👍🏻
@@Jamesandkate really!? I can't wait (or maybe I should??). Do you have a link please?
It's great to see my old leaf doing well and still being looked after 😀👍
Fantastic review 👏.
I think you have made my mind up for me,regarding the MG.
Apparently there is a facelifted version of the MG5 coming out later this year, it looks a bit sharper. Great video, very interesting to see a proper real world test, thanks for sharing.
Quoted range is going to be 249 miles WLTP instead of the old models 214
Facelift is next year, but this model will get a bigger battery later this year 👍🏻
Thanks James. Sounds really good. I seem to recall you thought the headllights were a bit underwhelming when you originally reviewed one of these a few months back. Having lived with a different vehicle for a bit have you had a chance to test them out and any thoughts?
Yeah, they're still lackluster at best. I'd HID/LED them immediately.
@@Jamesandkate Merely replacing halogen bulb with LED bulb nowadays won't pass an MOT. So even if an MOT is a long way off on a new car, probably best to go with a brighter bulb not LED.
@@robertsmart7484 Yeah thats true, although i've never personally had an issue with failing an MOT due to incorrect bulb type.
Excellent video for someone considering an MG5 ... Me
Not so sure about you relying on a trolley jack ... where was your axle stand ?
Well done MG and EV James and Kate only thing missing a frounk!
Looks good! If you could fit a tow bar for max 500kgs (bike rack and small trailer use) I'd be sold........waiting for the facelift 🤞
I use mine for my window blinds business . .Plenty long enough with all the seats stripped out. . Love the 85p PER WEEK running costs (Octopus GO , Zappi2 and solar) . Down from £30+ in a Skoda Octavia !!!!! Love it.
Which do you prefer, the 38kWh Ioniq or the MG5 Long Range? I have an Ioniq 38kWh Premium that I'm thinking of swapping for the MG5 LR Exclusive
15:27 Look at that indeed! Wow, that's the sort of customer you want. Keepers for sure.
Tesla don't recommend actually changing the brake fluid at 2 years, just check it, the change interval is recommended at 4 years 👍
4 years is too long for brake fluid.
@Wooly Chewbakker check for contamination, www.tesla.com/support/car-maintenance
😳 The bits of teeth from the Nissan tho... O-M-G...
Cheers Bob
Speak to Chris Hazel at Zero EV, he's a wizard.
Waiting to see when this model is available in France, they have at last expanded their dealer network beyond Paris, so that is good!
Probably will never fail but it's worth having it
The jack has a swing lock on it, works the same as an axle stand.
A great insight into the MG5 but was it the 53 or 61 battery version??
I think there's still some prejudice against Chinese vehicles. I think it n a few years they will be very good second hand value. I like the sports car concept they have produced. I never drive in London but when I worked there I would sometime go in on my motorcycle, even that was no quicker than the train. I have never understood the idea of driving in, nightmare.
So true on all counts. China will be huge in our market, that's for definite.
Great to get an insight in your job! And can't wait for the MG5 to come to the European mainland.
Great video, I considered the MG5 when they first arrived and had a 24hour test drive and dismissed it in its present form because I missed the adaptive cruise control and I wasn't impressed with the poor headlights but this is making me have a rethink, what a workhorse it is.
Rumour has it that a facelift is already on the way with acc and other goodies.
The headlamp output can be improved by swapping to Osram Night Breaker bulbs.
@@FFVoyager Yes October I believe, I'm looking forward to it.
All being added to the facelift. You're correct about the lights, they're poor.
@@robertsmart7484 Thanks Robert.
Can you let us know roughly how much you spend at the pump as everyone talks about kilowatt hours but no one tells you the cost per
When recharging.
I agree, you get used to the fantastic spec in the Leaf and the ability to preheat in the winter is so useful. The build quality is outstanding.
Thanks, very informative
How are you getting 4 Miles per kwh? I have a brand new 61kwh mg5 but only getting 3.6 and that's with being very conservative with heating and speed etc.
Fab video I have an ix3 on order on a deal that’s almost a no brainier so will be interesting when it comes in October!
I never ever have 'tickle it' or keep my speed below 60.
That's the beauty of an economical diesel engine, no faffing about.
Great review ... Looks like my next car....
Excellent.
Only thing its missing is an MG Pilot or adaptive cruise control option.
Very true. Facelift will have it though.
I had a test drive last week love the MG it’s wonderful to drive I want one
you've got the greatest job in the world as far as I am concerned
Except when its raining :-)))
Really enjoyed that. Thanks
Great Car. They should make it a panel Van.
It's "Burnley", lad! 😄
Really enjoyed this one...Thanks
Thanks.
I was trained at Jaguar Landrover.
Have I misunderstood something here? 200+ miles on full charge at the start of week, just 2 days later down to under 190 miles predicted from a full charge. That would give me concern for the battery life.i
Yes you have misunderstood.
All depends on how it's driven prior to a charge. There's no battery issues here to worry about
Thanks for a good review!
There's a newer facelift comingvwothba bigger battery. It's quoting 269 miles so may work for you 👍🏻
I love the MG practically and range, but it looks like a car of 10 years ago.
They've been rated to 35kgs. Initially we were told they can't be used for weight, but MG have since changed that.
@@Jamesandkate thank you very much
