I have just watched this movie. It did comfort me because I've been in the depths of my psyche similar to the woman in red. However my story has a happy ending because I made my life into a real heavenly dream after hell.
What people don't realize is that this movie is not just about drugs, but addiction in general. It's about the loneliness, despair, and lack of purpose people feel in their lives and how they go to great lengths to escape the reality of these feelings (in this case with drugs) but it only makes them much, much worse. Because addiction is always driven by a deeper yearning for something. This is represented by the red dress. For Sara it's the red dress she wore to Harry's graduation. She obsesses over losing enough weight to fit in it and wearing it on TV, not because she cares so much about wearing the dress itself, but because she desperately wants to return back to the time she last wore it, Harry's graduation. For her, the dress symbolizes the time her husband was still alive, she was happy and not at all lonely, she had reasons to live, all of which she now lacks. Her obsession with being on TV (which she is addicted to), losing weight, and addiction to diet pills are all a futile attempt to return to that place. It all goes too far, she loses all control, and spirals down toward her horrible fate. When Sara told Harry about her loneliness, how she has no reason to get out of bed in the morning, it made him sob. That might be because he wants his mother to be happy and it hurts him that she isn't, and it also might be because he shares those feelings as well. He tries to escape them with heroin but the escape it brings is very short-lived, and is miniscule in comparison to the suffering and despair it causes. The vision Harry has of Marion wearing the red dress on the dock is symbolic of his pursuit of a deeper feeling which he lacks. He tries to find it with drugs, but that doesn't work, of course. At the end we see that same vision, but this time, she disappears, and he falls down to his death. When he awakes he sees the angelic nurse telling him that she will come, but he knows she won't. By pursuing it with drugs he lost what he truly yearns for, and it ultimately led to his downfall. The red dress symbolizes the feeling or place that addicts yearn for. They chase it with their addictions but it doesn't bring them any closer to it; it only makes them suffer. The message this film conveys is that the things we do to try to escape our realities only compound our suffering, they don't make it go away. God help all the people who lose themselves in addiction. God help them. I cannot think a film that better conveys the hopelessness and despair of addiction. @@thehyperactiveswissguy8416 That's actually the point. Everything can be a drug at some point. Usually when overused. Overuse alcohol and you'll brew up an addiction to it. Overuse prescription drugs and you'll brew up an addiction to it. That's the point. 3 different protagonists, somewhat interlinked between each other, each one ending with different fate. Mommy ends up in asylum while son ends up with arm cut off and his girlfriend ends up being sexual slave to the drug dealer. The message is very clear. Don't do drugs. However, you should distinguish between an illegal drug (which is illegal for a reason), a prescription drug which only has to be taken in prescribed amount, and drugs that are socially accepted (like alcohol, caffeine or tobacco), which in smaller amount don't do much damage to your body. The film shows 3 probably worst case scenarios on how drug addiction can end.
@@CZghostWhile you certainly are right about the movie, saying illegal drugs are illegal for a good reason is some what wrong. Some illegal drugs can be helpful both in terms of promoting neuroplasticity and being safer then most socially accepted drugs. Alcohol and tobacco even in small amounts ,if accumulated over years can easily of be just as bad as street drugs. Funnily prescription drugs, even when taken in the prescribed amount can have horrible side effects i.e Benzodiazepines leading to dementia, ADHD meds (stimulants) leading to psychosis etc... I do agree that everything can be a drug, however you shouldn't really think just because something has been normalized that it's better for you. Like for example Ibogaine is a good prime example of how an illegal drug can be helpful. With no euphoria (so no recreational value ) it's one of a few compounds that can fully stop an opioid addiction which ,can be caused by legal pain meds.

I have her exact same story. I went to a (very shady) doctor who prescribed my very high doses (way higher than you'd ever get for ADHD) of dexamphetamine for weight loss (I was barely overweight really at 5'6 and 140lb) along with Lorazepam for the side effects. I couldn't sleep so was given Phenobarbital to knock me out at night. I basically kept asking for higher doses (doctor was fine with that) and ended up completely psychotic like Sara. I used to wonder the streets of my city up to 18 hours a day talking to people who weren't there and hallucinating pills and gold coins (think: Super Mario Brothers) that would vanish the nanosecond before my fingers touched them. I ended up getting sectioned. I was 89lbs when I was admitted to the hospital. Thank God I was hospitalized since I obviously could no longer access the amphetamines and so I came out of the psychosis after a while (a few days? a few weeks?) in hospital. DON'T DO DRUGS. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. See, it’s not inherently scary because of an evil fridge or the fact someone falls a great distance - it’s scary because of how surrealistic it is. It’s brilliant psychology. It’s disturbing because we can comprehend that all of this happens in real life. It’s amazingly brilliant. That is why I love it so much. I’ve seen many movies over the years, but no other movie has screwed me over like this one. No other movie has felt this realistic to me. In other words, if you haven’t seen it yet. I highly recommend you do. It’s disturbing, yes, but I really has opened my eyes to a lot of things.
Same here. Heard it in a commercial as a kid and it stuck in my head. As I grew up I looked for it but never could find it. Than I watched the film on a recommendation and there it was. I always thought it was a triumphant, epic theme, but watching the film gave it a whole new meaning for me. It was still epic, but now paired with the scenes from the film showed a number of people's lives just destroyed, mired in their respective personal hells. It helped portray the very personal depiction of people's lives falling apart almost like ancient epic Greek tragedy. Because to the characters, thats what it feels like to them, just the collapse of their world.

What people sont understand is that this movie isnt JUST about drug addiction. No, its about the himan psyche. Its about the fact that these people seek some form of comfort, some reassurance, some escape from the hardships that accompany their success and happiness in life. When Sara says "(the red dress) is a reason to get out of bed" this point is hammered home. They are living for external reassurance, they are shells of humans, as so many of us are.

"Drugs" is a broad term which is used to describe both very dangerous substances with high levels of addiction (meth, heroin) just like it's used to describe absolutely amazing ways of expanding one's mind which are not physically addictive at all (I'm thinking about DMT, LSD, psilocybin) One can experiment with one's own consciousness without being a junkie and dying of an overdose (good luck ODing on shrooms anyway). I think you shouldn't try meth, heroin and the like if you're not experimented and very confident that nothing will go wrong. Even then it's dangerous. But saying "drugs are bad, you shouldn't do acid/DMT/mushrooms/DXM/salvia/etc" shows a lack of education concerning the actual effects of these substances. Just thought I'd point it out, whatever.

Requiem for a dream is one of the most soul wrenching movies ever made exposing the harsh reality of drugs.

@@thehyperactiveswissguy8416 I only drink water
@@thehyperactiveswissguy8416 and Kool aid
I can't remember feeling physically different from just the experience of a movie before i came across Requiem For A Dream. This wasn't a movie but an experience in itself. It was beyond what cinema has been able to produce for decades. A masterpiece!

Mental/psychological breakdowns can be tougher than a characters death like in East of Eden or One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest

Its about the fact that these people seek some form of comfort, some reassurance, some escape from the hardships that accompany their success and happiness in life. This movie scared the shit out of me. Simple message: DON'T DO DRUGS OF ANY KIND!!!
wrong, use it for /fun/
"Drugs" is a broad term which is used to describe both very dangerous substances with high levels of addiction (meth, heroin) just like it's used to describe absolutely amazing ways of expanding one's mind which are not physically addictive at all (I'm thinking about DMT, LSD, psilocybin)
One can experiment with one's own consciousness without being a junkie and dying of an overdose (good luck ODing on shrooms anyway).

@@cheezoncrack1 Will it scar them for life? Indefinitely. Will they stay away from drugs? Without a fucking doubt.
2:17 I always absolutely loved this version of the song. This version always was the original to me. The one before was just an alteration. The epicness feels absolute and all consuming. This will always be my number 1. ❤
This song is scary but EPIC at the same time.
Yeah too scary 😂

Obinator this movie was great but it made me feel a way I cannot explain
Me to but this song is a MASTERPIECE
I have one key memory of this song: Mario VS Spartan. I've heard this so much yet I've never seen the movie.
The song here is just full with FEAR and I'm loving it. It makes such an amazing "final fight" theme.
This will always make me think about the old days. Big nostalgia.
If you get a chance watch it, I’m in the same boat with my memory being old yt videos. But it’s so impactful within the context of the movie as well.
I'd also like to both talk and not talk about that fucking fridge scene; like honestly, what the fuck?
When u watch it it turns from fear to sadness
Requiem for a Dream is a sad movie that gets worse as it progresses but it's such a good movie too. First time I watched it I was drinking with some buddies. This is a movie you lock yourself in a room and emerge yourself into the world of people making bad decisions that lead to hopelessness. Nothing good comes and the only thing that comforts you is disparity, loneliness, and loathe. Welcome my friend and enjoy the show vicariously. This is a movie you will never forget and no matter how bad things get you'll be addicted to it much like the people portrayed in this movie are to other things. Please come back and tell me how you feel after watching the masterpiece Requiem for a Dream.
I came here in the comments searching for Mario vs Halo reference. Happy to see that I am not the only one who has this locked away in their memory.
Just watched this movie. I knew it was fucked up.
I just didn't know it was that strong. Totes cauht me off guard, it is trully a masterpiece.
Overrated movie but a good message
My opinion it's one of the best films ever made
@@lilpp4791 you're kidding
It was really messed up. I sort of got it. It had a lot to do with the poer of addiction. But I could be wrong?
My only wish is that this song weren't overused up the yin-yang in so many bloody commercials and movies. It loses its power, and takes attention away from this incredible, yet horrendous, movie for which ONLY this music is appropriate. I wish you hadn't sold out, Mr. Mansell.
Well he does have sell in his name ;D
Oh god... and it's Man-sell. You are right, how dare I question the Universe! :P
ptanyuh was about to accuse you of that horrible pun but now I see that you didn't do it on purpose
It's a beautiful production and composure, he has the right to let people use it as much as he wants. It's his material and that's it. He didn't create this song with a vision of popularizing with the masses and gaining money.
this song never loses its power ---every time I hear it I feel unbreakable
when you are in the last 10minutes of a test and you still havent finished exercise 1
Peter Gepcke lol
When you hear the "1 minute left" on the test and you haven't even got the date down.
when that test is on 10minutes
You made my day :')
when your in your 30s and realize that none of the tests mattered anyway in the real world.
One of the most epic pieces ever made

This song sounds like what biblically accurate angels look like.
not even close
yes, that is true
There's a reason the "standard greeting" was 'fear not'.
Angel: BE NOT AFRAID
Human: sir this is the most terrifying moment of my life
And the scariest part, it was Jesus's 'standard greeting' too. "And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”" -Mark 4:41
2040:
“Dad what was life like 20 years ago?”

"there were more people around son"
son. the 2020 was just the beginning. because the true terrible things happend in 2021.
2022. t the humans were going crazy. 2023. goverments fallen. 2024. all nations enter in civil war that almost ended in a armagedon. 2025. the alien invasion. 2030. the new age of slavery. 2035. the new war for human freedom. that's all that i remmber son. so you got more questions son?!
