THE INTRO, LMAO Edit: Seth, I couldn't care less if you don't play ranked, I just love to see janky combos and have fun watching you play fun decks i definitely wouldn't be able to grind the cards for on my own!
Were you ever expecting him to get that one right? Knew he was gonna get it wrong before the vid even started, as I was looking at the thumbnail and thinking "Oh no..."
I like having a mix of ranked and unranked matches, it's fun to see how well it performs in a more competitive scene but it's also nice to just not watch the same game 10 times
@@Crusina *Unranked isn't necessarily diverse Still, I think the probability of finding a different deck is greater in Unranked matches since most people brew and test those brews on this mode (myself included). So, just to reiterate, I don't think Seth will only find original and out of meta decks in Unranked. However, there are better odds of such thing happening on this "not that competitive" mode.
Can anyone explain why Magma Opus still successfully targeted the Questing Beast after Snakeskin Veil at 1:05:20 ? I wouldn't expect the spell to fizzle but I would figure it shouldn't be a valid target anymore.
Was wondering the same thing. The entire spell shouldn't fizzle because it contains multiple targets so it should still resolve, but the questing beast part of the spell should have fizzled, similar to if you are bouncing multiple permanents to hand and one gets hexproof it remains but the others get bounced.
I think part of the purpose of series like Against the Odds and Much Abrew About Nothing is to demonstrate how these interesting decks perform in Standard, Modern, or whatever format you're brewing in, so I'd prefer ranked matches.
Hey Seth, I would much rather see diverse matches. I personally don't care whether I am watching ranked or free play. I just enjoy watching the jank unfold. Love the content! Thanks so much for putting it out! I look forward to seeing next weeks episode!
Anything that seems more fun to you will be enjoyable to watch! Watching the same few decks over and over again can be tiring to watch, not to mention playing against for you!
20:00 wouldn't it be better playing fabled passage for untapped land, activate Codie, cast cultivate and hope for scorching dragonfire? That would have saved you and generate much more value than tapland into nothing.
Id say for Against the Odds it doesn't matter if you play ranked or unranked. But with stuff like budget magic and single scoop should definitely be in ranked to show how competitive the decks are
For meme-ish series like this one, a more diverse set of matchups is good, so unranked seems fine. For competitive series like Budget Magic or Much Abrew, I'd prefer to see the decks against the actual meta, so ranked is probably best.
37:18 The purest form of Magic: When you get your opponent to give up with a full hand, both players at 20 life, and nothing on the battlefield but lands and a single 1-power creature. Anyway, someone should make an Arena mod that gives Codie's ability the Maro Kart item box cycle sound effect.
The diversity of decks is nicer than playing against the same top 3 decks. I do like to see the match up of those decks to see how the deck does cause its always cathartic when they lose to some jank brew! So ranked or unranked doesn't matter as long as we still get good game play!
I won so many pure strixhaven constructed with Codie and Dragonsguard elite with a lot of Quandrix instants and sorceries. I had a lot of fun with this card. :)
Heyo, I'm generally less interested in non--ranked matches, because I'd like to see what a deck can actually do. 3-4 decks is plenty of variety for me.
I concede immediately when I see rogues, I certainly wouldn't mind if these videos skip them 100% of the time. I have had so much more than enough of that deck.
I loved this intro, keep the match ups diverse. It'll be more fun for you, more fun for us. I honestly have not played arena much lately because I too keep seeing the same matches. Doesn't go well for someone that makes a lot of janky brews
Seth! As far as ranked vs unranked...I think it depends on the series. For Budget Magic and Much Abrew I think I'd like to see how the decks stack up against the meta. But for Against the Odds, I think we totally want to do the sweet things and I'm not as concerned about seeing all the meta decks. All that said I think I'd prefer more diverse match ups but also seeing a few meta decks. For example 1-3 meta decks and maybe 1-3 off meta? All that to say I think you skew towards or away from meta decks based on what you intend the deck for!
I enjoyed match up diversity. Some of the best Against the Odds moments are two jank decks battling for jank supremacy. Like playing against a Minotaur tribal deck that one time!
If you find constant enemies decks, your choice is perfect (half ranked half normal play). But remember that normal play has a matchmaker to link similar off-meta decks
I love the idea of getting good diverse matches. The only condition I think I'd put on it is that the matches have 2 "functional" decks that at least try to do things? Hard to quantify what makes a good match of mtg but I know it isn't infinite turns or one card combos
Pretty awesome win when it got going! Takes a bit of momentum for such a small commander though. I also don't like that it's main win condition is that degenerate bird feeder XD Still it was fun to watch.
@SaffronOlive I don't mind one bit you showing unranked matches because Ranked is trying to win win. I feel like your decks are more designed for experiencing the Set. That being said, it IS called, "Against the Odds," so if the odds aren't too favored against you, it doesn't have the same weight.
Not playing opus at instant speed against ultimatum was. You play it on upkeep to tap their land and prevent ultimatum. If they counter it, it still pushes off ultimatum a turn
If there's more variety in unranked, by all means play 100% unranked. A big part of the fun of Seth videos is the variety--why not look for it on both sides of the table?
I prefer seeing against the odds against ranked opponents because then it feels like you're actually trying to see how viable the deck actually is, (i.e. the odds are more against you) but especially if it's just a bunch of getting stomped, I don't mind unranked play I think it's also an issue of the format you're playing. Standard having only 3 real decks makes it hard to have a variety of interesting content, but modern/historic you're more likely to have different things you're up against
rules question: at 1:05:26, seths magma opus deals 4 nonlethal damage to the opponents questing beast even after it gained hexproof. why does this happen? I understand you don't need to target anything with the damage clause, since "any number" can be 0, so the spell shouldn't fizzle, but i wouldn't expect the damage to still go through. Edit: I looked it up and it seems like it is a bug, so nevermind lol
I am not sure if it is a bug. As far as I understand you do not target with the spell and hexproof doesn't give protection so the creature should still take the damage. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but i.e. Storms Wrath also effects creatures with hexproof, doesn't it?
@@mengis_darkblade28 The spell does have the word "target," but you can have any number of targets with the 4 damage that you divide up. Meanwhile, storm's wrath deals damage to "each creature," which is why it can deal damage to creatures with hexproof, as it never targets anything.
@@stevenh4314 Ok, then I think you are right, the Questing Beast should not take any damage, even if the spell doesn't fizzle. Then it seems like it is really a bug. I have overlooked the keyword target in the text of magma opus. New magic cards and their walls of text... :D
I really like the idea of some unranked matchups mixed in, it would be cool if you started the video on unranked, and then finished against some more competitive opponents, to show off the sweetness of the deck, and also show how it plays against competitive decks.

It's pretty good, but it's no scumble to temptation.
Whoever is doing your intros is a master of their craft
I would definitely rather see more diverse matchups than all ranked matches.
This looks so much more fun than just “Codie, Harmless Offering, opponent concedes”
I don't know, it's just using codie to take all the turns

1:05:25 how come Magma Opus dealt damage if Questing beast had hexproof?
That's what I'm wondering
The string of no counters into the opponent scoop was absolutely wild

More diverse match ups would be sick! Unless it is on moto and the hope is to feed the children at the end lol!
I don't mind the unranked matches for against the odds. This series isn't about being super competitive.
More diverse match ups always.

26:30 no I agree. It's super sus that yorion decks ALWAYS have emergent ultimatum on curve. I have almost never seen them not have it.
That Tom and Jerry meme at the beginning was so good
I think a small quantity of "unranked" matches in the mix is fine, but I much prefer that the majority of them comes from the std ladder.
