"Reaching" during the golf swing

  • Many teaching pros discourage amateurs from standing further away from the ball because they claim that you will be "reaching" for the ball. You should ignore this language and make your setup distance from the ball appropriate for your rotational movement skills, which I have discussed in multiple videos.

I just recently discovered your channel I absolutely love the information tips and drills, I personally fall in between D and E due to arthritis and spondylitis of my lower back I can clear and fire my hips much easier than if I stand too close!

Reaching and ,stretching out towards the ball during set up and during the swing is the hit impulse at its worst. It feels powerful but sets up the outside in swing. Concentrate on your hand and grip path during practice swings. Nice fluid practice swings with no ball just brushing the ground. Feel how your hands and grip follow the smooth rotation of your body. Feel how your hands are actually really close to the body. Dropping basically straight down from the transition. Feel that. Ingrain just the hands and grip feel as you gradually integrate a ball and contact. This change from hitting to actually swinging won't happen with one bucket. Nothing does. Stick with it and you may get rid of the hit impulse and improve. Good luck.

Brilliant. Watched many of your videos in 2 days. I have a question for you, if a Golfer lacks rotation skill (me) and doesnt early extend (me) and has a claasic arms straight down at address (me) what symptons might we see? Could be Heel strikes and hands even lower at impact?

I cannot say - there are lots of joint movement variables. And we need to find what works for us. Very general but accurate. EA Tischler is the best teach pro in my opinion.

Wayne Levi. Another accomplished tour player (12 wins) who had almost no wrist angle at address. A "reacher"

I do not want to be the Quasimodo of golf. Some reaching is good for putting draw on the ball. I've taken many lessons, only one pro talked about importance of distance from the ball. That was Albert Dillisio back in the 80s. Wish I had listened.

Thank you for this non "conventional" concept. I have watched the videos and been working on the drills. I played a round today standing farther from the ball and played very well, hitting a personal best for greens in regulation. With my conventional swing, I can ALMOST keep my butt as far back as at address, and I do lower my head on the downswing. With the ball further away, I still lower my head, but my hips move toward the ball. Psychologically, I believe my mind fears that I will not be able to reach the ball. Physically, I suspect I may be shifting toward the balls of my feet (rather than the heels). Do you have any suggestions beyond the "Squat" and "Lunge" drills? Might I find a solution in your book? Thanks again.

I have about 50 pages in the book about how to swing from the heels, so it might be useful to check out. For example, one of the things you can do is to actually balance your heels while swinging. That makes it impossible to move onto your toes.

"What is he doing? what is he doing? what is he doing?"
Since you are only showing the still images of actual professional golfers,
one (Harrington) a 3 time major winner and you don't know, I'll tell you. They are demonstrating what NOT to do. Did you think of that? And I love the context of your accusation, NONE.

So, in other words, you have no idea what it means to setup to the ball at a distance that is compatible with your rotational movement skills.

@@theamateurgolfersdilemma72 I know and so does Rick Shiels and Padraig Harrington and your single silent out of context image with you whining like a child "what is he doing?" is to try and make a point about ball position is dumb. @@truthlifefishing1730 First, I did not say they taught the exaggerated reach - that is a product of your own conjuring and confusion. And despite what you think, you didn’t make a point in this regard - in fact, you completely missed the point of that element of the video and its relationship to the issue of “reaching” at address.
Two, I did not say to raise the hands slightly for a one-plane swing method - more of your own conjuring and confusion. And even if one assumes Setup E - that does not require one to make a one-plane swing.
You completely missed the point of the video and each of your posts demonstrates this clearly.
