Origin of the "flying elbow" myth AND why it is not a problem

  • Since multiple PGA Tour winners had so-called "flying elbows," why is it considered a swing fault? For no good scientific reason...it is a purely made up notion. If you have adequate leg work in your golf swing, which need not be of a professional caliber, your backswing position can be uniquely yours and you should still be able to deliver a square club face at impact.

How can rotating the pelvis/hips better, which rotate on a much flatter plane than the individual torso ,shoulders , arm planes, have such an impact on club swing plane from top of the backswing to impact? One things for sure , you probably need to rotate your pelvis better to create greater degree of freedom to swing your arms/club. There are some short powerful muscles in the pelvis that when contracted can partially assist pelvic rotation from top of backswing to lead arm horizontal in the downswing (lateral pelvic rotator muscles). Then from downswing lead arm parallel to impact, it's probably the leg muscles (ie. glutes) doing the work to rotate the pelvis even more.

No flying elbow, pushing off the back foot and fire the hips are probably the most detrimental myths still taught in golf instruction today. I'm convinced that some of golf's greats like Sam Snead weren't exactly honest when they gave advice. They may have been engaging in gamesmanship, to fool or confuse their competitors.

Athleticism is what Jack contributed to his success. He said the average golfer is all about mechanics. Something to think about. 🤔
