I live in Canada, we have a 30 Foot Class C and winterize it for the winters because we don't go south. Temps drop to -30* Celcius (cold) in the winter. We blow out all the water lines, water heater, etc. Then we put in "people safe" ant-freeze. It's a pain to flush it all out in the spring but a lot easier and cheaper than fixing cracked and broken pipes and joints. We've had our unit for ten years and knock on wood, no problems yet. I feel bad for you for the problems you've experienced, Rvs are so much fun!! haha. Cheers from Atlantic Canada
We just bought our class c this past may. We r still learning. Hubby is pretty good at fixing stuff, BUT, this was such an investment, we paid to have ours winterized. The day b4 that cold weather hit. It felt good knowing we had this had been done. $170.00
I agree with you. Blow it out, and then the rv antifreeze works well for me. Been doing it for 40 years with no problems. Bypass and drain the hot water tank so that you don’t need as much antifreeze.
Hello from Alberta, Canada.. We have been quietly enjoying your videos for a while now, and I hope to perhaps save you more freeze issues with my suggestion. I have found "BLOWING OUT PIPES" is sometimes not enough to prevent frost damage. For our RV, I blow out as much water as possible with compressed air. Then, I run RV ANTIFREEZE throughout the system, and then again blow out the lines to recover as much antifreeze as possible. When we do winter camp, we do not use our water system , but rather live out of 5 gallon water jugs we keep inside the RV. Waste water is collected in pails, and poured into public toilets daily. Yes it is inconvenient, but we don't worry about freeze ups by doing it this way. We also do not drink from our RV tanks. Instead we carry three - 5 gallon refillable jugs of reverse osmosis filtered water that can be re filled at most grocery stores for about $3.oo per jug. We drink about a gallon per day, so the jugs last a while before we need to re fill. Alberta here too and I follow pretty much the same routine. I installed all my pipes inside the bus as well as the 130 gallon freshwater tank. The black and grey tanks are right below the toilet and shower so there is not much there to freeze. I dont winter camp but I think putting some anti freeze in the bay tanks would be enough to stop any serious freezing and all the other water and lines would be warmed from the diesel heaters in the bus.
Proper winterization requires putting rv antifreeze in the system. Blowing the lines out is not enough. You will have water sitting in your low points and fittings. 30 psi is all the pressure you need.
@@tomrobinson5388 good points. I use 60psi since that is the pressure our pump is set to. I want as much pressure as possible, since we have an old building with long runs to clear. And we then use antifreeze in drains and traps.
@regmcguire5582 the problem with higher pressure is it can push debris into the screens on your faucets. I saw this on a customer's rig. Also, there will always be residual water in your system, this is the reason for putting antifreeze in. I realize this is unsolicited advice and I don't mean to offend or sound preachy.
Oh dear. That’s a painful lesson. I made a tremendous error a few years back with a speedboat we had. Evidently I didn’t winterize it properly on year 3 we had it and in the spring we put it in the lake and it nearly sank with us on it. The winter cracked the engine block and when we tried running it, it filled with water faster than you could imagine. Painfully expensive lesson learned for me. Merry Christmas. Putting an RV in storage, blow out, 30-40 pounds will do it, then use antifreeze the "safe" kind. Also I would disconnect the truck battery and pull the fuse on the fuel pump, do not leave the fuse were someone will see it and put it in if they try to "borrow" you rig. Make a note what you did and attach it to the keys you give your daughter, etc so they could move it if needed. I use to help my exfather in law winterize what they left behind when they went to Texas for the winter so someone knew what had to be done to unwinterize, I always wrote out a note to help me remember because if I was doing it something bad had happened.

You can absolutely use a pancake compressor to blow lines out, we do the same every winter weekend at our cabin in northern Ontario. Turn the output down to 60psi, and do one line at a time. Give the compressor time to rebuild pressure at times, and only stop when all there is coming out is a fine mist. We plumbed compressor fittings into our main lines and blow it all out. My cousin had a rule on this- you can heat it or blow it out, nothing else works in the winter for water.

@@bigtruckbigtravels I have both, but neither will maintain the pressure you need to get ALL the water out if you just leave the taps on. You need the 60psi to blow out the standing water in dips and valves, as you know. Either one has to be shut off at times to build pressure back, and I find you can only do one line at a time with pauses. If you just leave the taps open, you will empty either compressor quickly and won't have enough pressure to get the lines clean. Also, to echo someone else here, you then have to put plumbing antifreeze anywhere there is a trap or drain, just in case. Good luck.
Water is an RV's worst enemy. Not just broken and cracked pipes but it can also cause soft floors and mold Especially if you don't notice it until it's to late and wind up having to replace floors and or siding. Glad the ladies are off enjoying their retreat. Merry Christmas 🎄

So far in our Journey, we haven't had any freeze disasters but I can remember as a child my dad had a few and I learned back then. I would have missed the icemaker.. we never had one.
Winterized our TT this past weekend. Drained the water heater then blew out all the lines, then filled them with antifreeze. Lessons learned by watching these lessons learned YT videos 😂
We disconnect all the outdoors hoses. Plus put antifreeze in our basement pipes-not much heat down there and one year we had one pipe bust! My go to plumber told me this trick years ago.
Hello David I am watching your video and if you want to make sure you get your camper winterized great. Use your transfer pump that you have for Orion and hook it up to your city water connection and push rv antifreeze through the whole system and don't push it through your hot water heater. Done it for years in my rv in northern Minnesota.

I read were several viewers said to blow out the lines than run RV anti-freeze. Why not just run the anti-freeze? The goal is to remove/displace the water, and the anti-freeze has the density and ability to do that. Also, it ensures that the anti-freeze gets down onto the P traps, need to get the water out of those as well. I've winterized my own campers for years this way with no issues. I tried the compressed air one year and was not confident with how it was working so before I stored my RV I went back, rewinterized it using the tried and true.
You are correct. My thought on blowing out the lines is so I don't have to flush the lines when we want to use it...oh well, good plan but bad execution!
David I always spend $15 on pink non toxic antifreeze and can be done in less than 30 mins. I have never had a frozen pipe in other 30 yrs. Blowing out with an air compressor is not 100% full proof Merry Christmas!
We use the anti freeze -Doesn’t take long to do and you can leave it for as long as needed -😊Unfortunately, not all of us can escape to warmth in the winter 😢🥶
Blowing out water lines is a good start. I always follow up with a RV/Marine freshwater system antifreeze flush. Even if you think you have blown all the water out with air, you haven't. Gravity will pull on any remaining droplets and consolidate the water, especially in tankless waterheater coils. Best...
A couple of gallons of pink plumbing antifreeze circulated through the whole system protects my RV through -40-degree Canadian winters. Works every time and only takes about 20 minutes.
It was close to 40 below yesterday morning and today warmed up to a high of minus 27. i hook up an air compressor to my water inlet. I open one tap at a time. I remove my water filter and dump it out. I have installed a pipe on my half horse water pump and run several jugs of RV antifreeze after I blow all the lines. has worked for the past four years. i have pex, not copper. I heard it does better in that situation and its easier and safer to put in.

Merry Christmas and safe travels. If you make a mistake winterizing, as I did on my first one, you never forget and you go beyond. Food safe pink RV antifreeze is the way to go. In my case I was fortunate it was only the water pump that failed and was an easy fix on our first post winter trip.

Hi David and Sondra very good vid, I know the feeling of the sprinkler system bought an old mobile years ago they never insulated anything and it was all 7/16 copper through out, all of that copper plumbing looked like a sprinkler system what a job !!; I feel for you. I've never tried to use air, I've always drained, and use the pink stuff. Had it to an art on Class C. Luckily never had to deal with freezing pipes. Don't use air...just throw the pink stuff in. I understand some don't like to do that, it's a personal preference. Merry Christmas!
RV companies don’t want us to know what? That you have to properly winterize? Yeah, they absolutely do. Most manufacturers even winterize new units with antifreeze at a certain point in the year since it’s likely they will be exposed to the cold
I failed to leave the shower faucet handles in the 'on' position and the antifreeze leaked out, just little drips, after a few freeze/thaw cycles. I imagine I will have to replace the fixture in the spring.
I do have a large compressor and used it a couple of times but found my shopvac does a much more effective job at pulling water out of lines rather than compressor trying to effectively push water out of pipes. Been doing it either once or twice a year since 2002, only had an issue once and that was because our domestic toilet doesn't permit water to be pulled out by vacuum...Oops, had to replace the toilet valve.
We keep our RV at a hunt camp in Lake Wales, Florida and some kind of rodents either mice rat or squirrel ate through our pipes and got into the RV well it cost us $10,000 to have all the pipes repaired. What a disaster for us.

Omg all these water leaks. It looks like the leak in the bathroom pushed forward to the ice maker which pushed forward to under the kitchen sink, etc...weak point to weak point to weak point. Do have low point drains under the RV (red and blue hoses with valves)? Open those up, open all the fixtures, pull the filter, and open the pressure relief valve on the water heater. There should be very little water left to blow out after those are done draining. The ice maker will have its own procedure. Since it's long term have you considered RV antifreeze in the system? Merry Christmas!
Man, as an aircraft mechanic seeing those hoses and fittings and hearing your stories about all of them leaking that just makes me cringe! I'm wondering if you can replace all of those plastic fittings with household brass fittings and accompanying lines/hoses. If not you can probably have an aircraft tube and fitting shop mfg you some low pressure tubing (lines) and AN fittings that I guarantee you will never leak again! Also that one line that goes to your water heater under sink (?) is kinked because the bend is too tight. You need a longer hose to obtain a shallower bend or if you don't have the room for that, perhaps a hose that can accommodate a tighter radius! Happy trails!
David, I am curious why you use a water hose when winterizing the Magnitude, when I do this I just screw the Camco RV Brass Blow Out Plug directly into the city water supply, and the air compressor to it.

its not that they are not meant to survive cold.. they just severely punish those who dont make absolutely certain its all drained and dry, then they really punish those who dont climb a ladder and check out every single joint for sealant
@@bigtruckbigtravels nephew borrowed one of our campers during a poor economy stretch. they moved out in jan and pretended to drain it out.. 100 percent ruined water system.. never did get it all fixed, by the time finances were better i got a new camper rather than all new piping.. pita.. learn the hard way and pass it on.

I read were several viewers said to blow out the lines than run RV anti-freeze. Why not just run the anti-freeze? The goal is to remove/displace the water, and the anti-freeze has the density and ability to do that. Also, it ensures that the anti-freeze gets down onto the P traps, need to get the water out of those as well. I've winterized my own campers for years this way with no issues. I tried the compressed air one year and was not confident with how it was working so before I stored my RV I went back, rewinterized it using the tried and true.
You are correct. My thought on blowing out the lines is so I don't have to flush the lines when we want to use it...oh well, good plan but bad execution!

I always spend $15 on pink non toxic antifreeze and can be done in less than 30 mins. I have never had a frozen pipe in other 30 yrs.

We use the anti freeze -Doesn’t take long to do and you can leave it for as long as needed -😊Unfortunately, not all of us can escape to warmth in the winter 😢🥶

Blowing out water lines is a good start. I always follow up with a RV/Marine freshwater system antifreeze flush. Even if you think you have blown all the water out with air, you haven't. Gravity will pull on any remaining droplets and consolidate the water, especially in tankless waterheater coils. Best...

A couple of gallons of pink plumbing antifreeze circulated through the whole system protects my RV through -40-degree Canadian winters. Works every time and only takes about 20 minutes.

It was close to 40 below yesterday morning and today warmed up to a high of minus 27. i hook up an air compressor to my water inlet. I open one tap at a time. I remove my water filter and dump it out. I have installed a pipe on my half horse water pump and run several jugs of RV antifreeze after I blow all the lines. has worked for the past four years. i have pex, not copper. I heard it does better in that situation and its easier and safer to put in.

Merry Christmas and safe travels. If you make a mistake winterizing, as I did on my first one, you never forget and you go beyond. Food safe pink RV antifreeze is the way to go. In my case I was fortunate it was only the water pump that failed and was an easy fix on our first post winter trip.

Hi David and Sondra very good vid, I know the feeling of the sprinkler system bought an old mobile years ago they never insulated anything and it was all 7/16 copper through out, all of that copper plumbing looked like a sprinkler system what a job !!; I feel for you. I've never tried to use air, I've always drained, and use the pink stuff. Had it to an art on Class C. Luckily never had to deal with freezing pipes. Don't use air...just throw the pink stuff in. I understand some don't like to do that, it's a personal preference. Merry Christmas!

RV companies don’t want us to know what? That you have to properly winterize? Yeah, they absolutely do. Most manufacturers even winterize new units with antifreeze at a certain point in the year since it’s likely they will be exposed to the cold
I guess the companies just kind of assumed we know you have to winterize an RV in the winter.
They don't want you to know the "proper" way to winterize and getting all the water out! Such as in my water heater.

I failed to leave the shower faucet handles in the 'on' position and the antifreeze leaked out, just little drips, after a few freeze/thaw cycles. I imagine I will have to replace the fixture in the spring.
That is a bummer. I hope you are able to salvage the fixture. I did that too in the first year... but got lucky with a warm winter.
I do have a large compressor and used it a couple of times but found my shopvac does a much more effective job at pulling water out of lines rather than compressor trying to effectively push water out of pipes. Been doing it either once or twice a year since 2002, only had an issue once and that was because our domestic toilet doesn't permit water to be pulled out by vacuum...Oops, had to replace the toilet valve.
That's a great tip about using a shop vac for removing water from pipes, thanks for sharing! Didn't think about a vacuum vs a push. Hmmm... thanks

We keep our RV at a hunt camp in Lake Wales, Florida and some kind of rodents either mice rat or squirrel ate through our pipes and got into the RV well it cost us $10,000 to have all the pipes repaired. What a disaster for us.

Omg all these water leaks. It looks like the leak in the bathroom pushed forward to the ice maker which pushed forward to under the kitchen sink, etc...weak point to weak point to weak point. We blow out our camper (2021 Forest River No Boundaries 19.6) at 40psi as suggested. Love the dad joke blooper reveal at thend. Lol. Yesterday was my birthday 🎉🎉! Do have low point drains under the RV (red and blue hoses with valves)? Open those up, open all the fixtures, pull the filter, and open the pressure relief valve on the water heater. There should be very little water left to blow out after those are done draining. The ice maker will have its own procedure. Since it's long term have you considered RV antifreeze in the system? Merry Christmas!

Man, as an aircraft mechanic seeing those hoses and fittings and hearing your stories about all of them leaking that just makes me cringe! I'm wondering if you can replace all of those plastic fittings with household brass fittings and accompanying lines/hoses. If not you can probably have an aircraft tube and fitting shop mfg you some low pressure tubing (lines) and AN fittings that I guarantee you will never leak again!
Also that one line that goes to your water heater under sink (?) is kinked because the bend is too tight. You need a longer hose to obtain a shallower bend or if you don't have the room for that, perhaps a hose that can accommodate a tighter radius! Happy trails!

David, I am curious why you use a water hose when winterizing the Magnitude, when I do this I just screw the Camco RV Brass Blow Out Plug directly into the city water supply, and the air compressor to it.
I couldn't find that attachment several years ago so I made one. That Camco is much easier!

@@bigtruckbigtravels nephew borrowed one of our campers during a poor economy stretch. they moved out in jan and pretended to drain it out.. 100 percent ruined water system.. never did get it all fixed, by the time finances were better i got a new camper rather than all new piping.. pita.. learn the hard way and pass it on.
