  • Trying to get out of our daughter's driveway so we can head west for some warranty work, doctors' appointments and a few projects that need to be completed. No air, so no brakes which means that we aren't moving anytime soon.
    Got on the phone with Coachnet, Love's Mobile Truck Repair and the local semi-truck parts distributor (FleetPride) to try and diagnose the issue and repair it.
    Luckily, the weather was beautiful, and we were assisted by some very helpful people.

    I get my music from:
    Epidemicsound.com
    If I had an Amazon link, it would be here!
    We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
    Vehicles:
    2016 Volvo VNL780 "Voyager"
    2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
    2019 SpaceCraft Custom built, designed semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
    2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
    2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
    Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
    We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded to Kansas City, Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Tennessee just to name a few other areas.

      Lol. Great point! We always take lots of pictures of what ever we are about to take a part. And video so we can reverse it to put whatever it is back together. Unfortunately the Coachnet roadside mechanic didn't do that and basically put it in backwards. But we didn't want to throw him under the bus on camera because he was super nice and helpful and pointed us to a guy who had more experience. 😉

    The main cause of all these problems is if the lines you hook up needs to. Be covered while un hooked. Trash in these new computerized air systems will shut you down. Case in point.

      Thanks for the comment Tom. We've always had the lines covered on the truck but didn't think about the trailer.

    Dave, that's called a diverter valve. The reason they fail is because they have a small rubber disc in them. Once the start blowing air like it was you have to replace them. Most truck shops have them as they are standard equipment on trucks and trailers.
    There just a royal pain in the back side to change out. Also do a complete brake check. I see you have disc brakes on the trailer. But on the truck you have drums on the driver's. As for your steering axle you could have either drums or disc. While your at it check you wheel bearing oil on the steering since you have covers.
    Safe travels and roads Brian and Cindy, "xtreambydesign with passion"

    • @bigtruckbigtravels
      @bigtruckbigtravels  Рік тому +2

      Thanks Brian. Always great to hear from you. We have disc brakes all the way around...truck & trailer. You're correct in that it was a pain to change...lots of air lines going in and out! Lol. Fleet Pride called it a Spring Brake Priority Valve and they sell a lot of them!

    • @mrsbigtruckbigtravels726
      @mrsbigtruckbigtravels726 Рік тому +1

      Wow! Thanks for the detailed explanation Brian! 👍

    • @brianroth7852
      @brianroth7852 Рік тому +2

      @@bigtruckbigtravels Yep, I have replaced many of the both on the tractor and the trailer. I learned to always take a picture before I start messing with airlines. Also not sure if you do an annual on the big truck but we get one on ours at a truck shop when we do the oil change. Another reason since our trucks aren't used commercially and Incase we are ever involved in an accident I have proof that our truck and trailer have been serviced by a company that is familiar with the equipment of that size. Old saying it's cheaper than an attorney trying to prove something.

    The bee's crawl into the lines then when you hookup and put the air to the trailer the bee's get pushed into the system and can cause problems.
    Semi trailer stores can sell the glad hand covers that you can put on the trailer when your truck is not attached.

    So as a few have mentioned cover the air line connections when not in use. Also the truck most likely has a air dryer. Have that serviced. I couple times during the year, I add a teaspoon of airline oil or ATF to the airline that comes off the compressor and also to the supply line to the trailer. If the truck is equipped with a dryer than add to the out put line from the dryer. This will keep all those rubber seals working. Safe travels

    Carry a bottle of air line antifreeze. It’s true purpose is to thaw frozen parts but it can also give the system enough moisture to break that stuff free and will still evaporate. It’s not great for a system but ok in a pinch. Pour it into your red line off the truck then hook to trailer and charge trailer.

    Those valves stick when they get dirty, like others have said, drain your air tanks almost everyday and cold weather will cause them to freeze up. I have 35 year's driving trucks most northwest, so theirs alot or things like this is going to happen, good luck...hey, you should have a air bag leveling valve in the back of you're trailer, some of them can be adjusted for a softer ride, we used to bend the bar, but that's not the right way, a shorter bar is what you need.

    The majority of the time there's just some dust or a small rock keeping that valve open. Apply air and take something like a screwdriver or pen and shove it up on the valve inside the bottom hole, it will take some reasonable effort to move the valve but it normally will get it to seal up pushing on it a few times

      You're correct, Larry...once we found out what was causing the issue with the brakes not releasing. Luckily, FleetPride had one left and we got it. Very fortunate. Thanks for the comment.😎

      Used to live in the area as well. The manufacturer of our home is in Concordia, so we are back there on a nearly annual basis for work to be done. Thanks for the comments.

      After driving thru Missouri we've realized there's a lot to see there. We put together 6 week schedule for our next visit there. Thanks for the comment Galvin! 😊

    Love the big rig! The vehicle pet names are cute but really annoying, especially when you’re talking about them all at one time.

    That faulty valve looks like valve that came out of my Toyota Tundra, only mine like two of those paired up. My mechanic had to take the air intake off of the top of engine to replace te valve pair.

      Oh man. That was no fun. In retrospect, our valve was fairly easy to access and replace. Thanks for the comment.

    That's a "spring *brake* priority valve" @7:49, not a "spring break priority valve". You want brakes, you don't want them to break.

      LOL...you are correct Brian. My bad! We definitely don't want the brakes to break! Thanks for the comment and appreciate your time watching the channel. 😁

    Never follow the GPS in a big truck . It’s strictly for a reference. It will get you in trouble. 43 yrs a trucker.

      That is so true. We try to always reconfirm using the STAA road atlas but sometimes we get "lazy". Appreciate the comment.

    Frustrating doing repairs in a drive, but it happens and you got it done. Truck and trailer look great together. I think it actually looks better with the longer truck . Definitely a dream rig.

      Thanks, Jack. Actually, being in the driveway wasn't bad since it was a concrete surface to work on, but it was the fact that it happened. RV Life is made up of these little issues but it's still a great way to live. Appreciate your comments.

    You need to become familiar with fleet pride truck parts!
    Is that a spacecraft?

    • @mrsbigtruckbigtravels726
      @mrsbigtruckbigtravels726 Рік тому

      Our goal is to be as little familiar with truck/trailer repairs as possible. But after being on the road for 7 years now we are not achieving that goal. 🤪🤣🤦‍♀️. Thanks for the comment Robert and watching the Channel.
      Yes, the trailer is a SpaceCraft and is built on a semi chassis type frame.

    Just stomp the gas pedal down and hold down until you hear air dryer pops and you should be able to go because you have lot lines air bags this should work .

    Just get a NASTC card for fuel. That’s what Owner Operator’s use.

      Thank you. We have a TSD card but not many stations in Alaska. It's mainly a lower 48 fuel card. Next time we'll look into it. Appreciate the comment.
