The roundabout is now a lot worse than it was back then; it goes from two lanes to one, then back to two and back to one before it repeats. I would estimate that at least a quarter of all vehicles are in the wrong lane and will quickly switch lanes to get in the correct one when they realise their lane is for the exit only.
Roads were so much nicer back then. Thanks for sharing.

I love these. Early-mid 80s was definitely my favourite time growing up. Amazing just how hazy the air was then - there must still have been quite a few solid fuel fires around. And 75% of all cars were Fords!

Love the surreal intro with the stick and the trippy music and the empty roads with nobody parking and the death defying driving from the 4 door mk2 Escort and Steve Wright in the Afternoon. England seemed normal and modern in the '80s when I was there, but this vid shows it to have been somewhere else entirely from what I remember with smoke-belching power stations and tiny trees on mown verges along empty motorways with a separate lane on the left that nobody used.
Nurse, I need one of my pills please. One of the special happy ones....

That bit of Steve Wright on Radio 1 made me think. I would have been listening to that at work, as a YTS apprentice mechanic. We used to have an old car radio in the workshop tuned to Radio 1. Seems like a lifetime ago.

Late 70s early 80s cars you weren't sure you would get there without breaking down, late 80s early 90s very like modern day like - there was quite a marked step in reliability. I remember when I was driving around there in the early 90s something changed for the better around there, was it you had to drive to Ferrybridge services to get on the A1 but then an/the A1 junction opened to the west that made it a lot easier

    • @m60kaf

Oh I remember the 1999 M1 extension, before that to get North from Manchester was either stick to the M62 to Ferrybridge and go up the Narrow A1 full of lorries blocking the right lane or work your way through congested Leeds,

Maybe I'm strange but, I actually miss seeing Ferrybridge C on trips along the M62/A1. A big, brutal concrete behemoth it may have been but, it was such a significant landmark and contributor to the local economy (and of course all the collieries around Yorkshire that supplied it) to go past now and see nothing there is just...... strange. Empty. Back in '85 there must have been many more local power stations still in operation too, like Leeds Skelton Grange, Wakefield, Elland.... you'd have been able to see cooling towers on the horizon in almost any direction! Not so today (though plenty of wind turbines instead).
Ditto the colliery pit heads and outbuildings that were once such a common sight. All gone now. Better? Maybe. More interesting? Nope.

    • @251hanomag
      @251hanomag  6 днів тому

Yes you knew you were nearly home when you saw them.
I rember the long trains carrying coal to Ferrybridge. Going over the bridge, on the B6136 next to it
When I was doing the demolition photo`s & videos. Over the long time it took to demolish it..
It was a constant convoy of lorries. Coming & going, with wood pellets, for the new Multifuel plants..
It seemed daft to close the local Kellinglley pit down.
Then bring wood pellets from America,
The manufacturing of the pellets, the oil the ships consume, & then the wagons from the docks.
That`s a lot of fuel miles.
Also the waste material from the Flue Gas Desulphurisation.
Was the raw material, for the plasterboard factory built next to it.

That's what I wondered my Dad had a camcorder in 85 but cost a lot and was massive. He also had a 85 XJS v12 with a car phone. Looking at the car its looks old boy racer type that would probably worth less than the camera. Initially I thought it a cine camera which was still more popular in 85 much cheaper than a camcorder and had better quality than some camcorders. But as there is sound unless fake, I wonder if they worked in the camera world

A video camera & a portable video recorder for these videos. Did get a VHS(c) camcorder a few years later.
But did`nt want it rattling away on the tripod. And originally they were only 30 minute tapes
My dad had a cine camera, but I never usd it. Wish I had now.
The sound is original, and was a tape being played.
The video`s labelled "New Audio" are some great music added on. That was not on any of the originals at the time.

Are you sure this is definitely as early as May 1985? 04:35 passing in the middle lane looks like a Ford Granada/Scorpio which I don't think arrived in the UK until 1986 C reg. Certainly never seen one on a B reg. Unfortunately it passes too quickly to see the registration.

@@mattw8332 According to Wikipedia they were released in April 1985 which would be B reg which surprised me, as I have certainly never seen any on a B reg. Even on C reg I thought the numbers were limited as I only ever saw a few of them. However, I remember seeing plenty of them on D reg.
