Despite being a Brit who loves all WW2 aircraft, i have to say that the Bf-109F,G & K models are my absolute favourite aircraft of all time! There is something so emotive in the engine sound (as good as a Merlin!) that makes my forearm hairs stand on end. I used to be an Aircraft technician in the British Army and though helicopters were fun, I'd have loved to have had the chance to have gotten my paws on a Gustav! What a machine - so functional, deadly and elegant. Well done Willy!!!

+Ege Coskunsoy The same sound can be heard from the Italian WWII fighters like the Macchi M.C.202 and 205, the Reggiane Re.2005, or the Fiat G.55. This is because the Italians mass produced a licence produced DB 605 to power their already gorgeous and aerially masterful airframes. It really is a shame that nobody can hear one of those old birds running today. I hope that one day I could bring about the creation of an exact replica of at least one of those planes...

Again, my appreciation for the BF/ME109 is reaffirmed every time I view the type in flight...even just running on the ground...superb! I'm a proud American who loves the P51 and for that matter most all fighters of the WWII era...just sayin'
Thank you very much, this being my favorite of the BF-109 variants. The G-10 was Willy Messerschmitt's attempt to get his crowning achievement back on track, especially after such negative opinion from the Luftwaffe 'experience" over the G-6 variant which so many disliked and said that it was a backward step.It still mounted a formidable armament in the MK-108, 3 cm through the propeller hub and the two,Mauser 131/13, 13 mm above the engine. Best of all was the increased power from the Daimler-Benz w water /methanol injection system. But we cannot gloss over the fact that the Tags-Flieger was doomed.
@@carmenmiranda4108 the 109 was a pure warmachine, easy to produce and maintain but also with many new features at its time. Unforunately Willy give a shit on pilots workload or comfort 🤔. Kurt Tank (FW190 designer) was a pilot himself and you can clearly see this in the cockpit layout of the 190.

There were different qualities of aviation fuel in Germany. Some DB605 variants needed C-3 (100 octane), most engines used B4 (87 octane). The 109s that needed C-3 had red paint on the main landing gear. So the ground crews could easily see from the distance which they needed to refuel the plane.
I was an American soldier stationed in Germany for the last 1/2 of the 70s and early 80s. Met a German girl and married her. In Oct. of this year, we'll celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary!! Her grand father was a flier in WWII! He was shot down by the Russians twice!! He told me he flew transport planes, Stukas, Fiesler-Storch reconnaissance planes and a Bucker biplane. He died in 1986. In recent years, my father-in-law told me he got sent to a concentration camp toward the end of the war and that the Americans rescued him. He must have spouted off that the war was lost and the Gestapo heard about it! His whole family was excommunicated to Sonthofen, Germany. I wish I knew more about this story!
I know its kinda late considering that its been 4 years since you posted this, but still happy late 30th wedding anniversary, and happy 34th wedding anniversary as well!
That's an awesome story. Happy 34th wedding anniversary. I know it's a little late. I'm 34 now, and when I was in highschool one of my highschool teachers was the son of a German soldier. His dad fought on the eastern front and was captured near Berlin after his unit surrendered in 1945. The Russians executed everyone on the spot save for a few of them that knew how to work on tanks. He ended that war working on Russian T-34 tanks in Berlin. The first chance he had he escaped to the west and was brought to America. There he meet an American woman and they raised a family together. Their son taught me history in high school. I'll never forget the history I learned with him.
I'm glad this was uploaded for everyone's viewing pleasure. There aren't many of these remaining today, and fewer still are flight worthy. Thanks for uploading.

@76RV The D series engines like what the G-10 and K-4 used (DB 605 D) were designed to run on C3 fuel (called 100 octane but tests show it was equal to 130 or 140 grade fuel). It was designed for higher altitudes. The g10 reached it's max speed at 7400 Meters (around 25k feet) the same height as the p51. And obviously performed well at these altitudes. I won't say one engine is better than the other because I don't think it matters honestly. both great pieces of engineering.
The bumps on the wing are not usually found on G-10's but on G3 - G14, but the bumps by the chin indicate the power plant is a 605D. Looks like this was upgraded later to a G10 standard.
this is puzzled by many parts and frames after war. That´s what i heard. Other than that the long tail wheel was never an upgrade to any previous model ! This belongs only to the G10 .
Thanks for posting this fabulous vid! No background music or other BS, just a beautiful bird doing the real stuff, awesome. That signature 109 approach whine, is it the supercharger you hear?

yep, but perhaps it reduced a bit of start and landing accidents with all the younf unexpirienced pilots at that time. K4 was more streamlined but they tail wheel mechanism did frozen in wintertime; so some groundcrew did fix it again :-)
@@kubanskiloewe Yes, I understand)) The same thing was done with the F4U Corsair, to improve visibility on the ground. K4 probably the ultimate 109 :-)
Truly a fine aircraft. It just leapt off the ground, accelerated, and went into a steep climb like a bat out of Hell, like a fine interceptor/air superiority fighter should. If the tail wheel retracted it would be even faster and more menacing.
Great to know there are more still flying! When I go to germany I will certainly visit de museum. Do you have an idea of how much is a flyable ME worth nowadays?
I was hoping for some Barrel Rolls. I loved the straight up climbs, amazing. I can only imagine how this thing handles with all the weight of weapons and armor removed. This bf109 must be insanely maneuverable and climbable.
Super nice video - thanks!! Wanted to see Walter's landing; video really just showed his "roll out". Was it a "three pointer"? Or, a "wheel landing" (with the tail wheel coming down fairly early?) Beautiful aircraft - no question about it.
+Olaru Bogdan Because we are one with the air, tuned to the beating of the prop, and synchronized with the rattling of the Maschinenkanone. You can't deny it!
Fantastic sounding 109....you can`t beat the real thing, unfortunately all we get to see in the UK these days are 109 Buchons with Merlins in, great sound but not right, perhaps we will see a proper 109 over here again some time soon. Thanks for posting and have to agree with your comparison comments...lets just enjoy them all for what they are, great warbirds that we are all very priviledged to see in the air where they belong!
Germany, Britain and the United States had their signature aircraft in WWII, and this was Germany's. It was a beautiful aircraft which maximized it's potential. It was small, light with a powerful fuel injected supercharged engine. The question I always had was the rear wheel being locked in place. The drag must have cut 10-15 mph from the speed, but the Spitfire had the same problem so maybe everything equaled out in the end.
i think the sped loss of the tailwheel isn´t so high, i read about 10km/h at max speed. Sure th eF and early G models had retractable rear wheels but not completely covered like P51 or russian airplanes like Yak´s or La´s. The first and the last 109 with fully covered undercarriage front and rear was the K4 but it had problems with the rear cover so many were fixed again to stay out from the field mechanics. You have to imagine the K4 serviced from late autumn 44 till end of war. So it most times see wet, or snowy ground surface which spin dirt into the covers and wheel bay at start and landing and taxiing. Most german bases had grass runways and 109´s were supposed to take off on that. The groundcrews had really enough work to hold them in service than cleaning and lubricating these parts after any plane move. So perhaps they decided to fix the tailwheel outside and take care of the cover for the frontwheels which was certainly an improvement. But i agree, this prolonged tailwheel at the G10 disturbs much of it´s aggressive and aerodynamic look ! The K4 was more cleaner.
Another note to the ancient comment section: The retractable landing gear introduces mechanical complexity and thus an increase of resources required to assemble the plane. The added drag really wasn't worth it, which is a major reason the G10 didn't feature a at least somewhat retracted tail wheel like earlier variants.
A beautifull thing, almost 80 years after, looks good, flyes good and sounds nicely, a very powerfull engine with... idle, as a J3 !!! thank you Dr. Willy , while watching this video it cames to my mind a Me108 Taifun and it appeared, too! A nice surprise, The Best for The Bests, Mercedes Benz, best in the air, best on the road !!!
The aircraft is now part of the Willy Messerschmitt Museum, which is part of EADS in Germany. They own and operate 3 flyable Me109G aircraft as well as a new-build Me262 replica.
Die schönste Maschine die jemals gebaut wurde.. durch das Motorengeräusch beim vorbeiflug stellen sich einem die Nackenhaare auf.. es ist und bleibt ein Lebenstraum, einmal die ME 109 fliegen zu dürfen!
Thanks for the insight kubanskiloewe! This sounds advanced for the time. What amazes me is how production, research and advancement could continue under the most difficult of circumstances. I was always puzzled that the 109 undercarriage drawbacks could not be improved, possibly it would have involved significant redesign, sacrificing weight/performance perhaps? Thanks again :-)
From what I've heard, the Bf 109 was conceived as an interceptor and a dogfighter that follows Willy Messerschmitt's lightweight principle of aircraft building. A powerful engine available, fitted to the smallest airframe possible. This method of construction meant that the 109 was light, fast, agile, and a good rate of climb. The aircraft's landing gear was hinged at the wing roots, allowing for ease of maintenance (its wings can be removed for servicing without the need for additional equipment to support the fuselage), as well as simplification of the wing structure, since it did not have to bear the loads imposed upon take off and landing.
The fuselage is an original G10 that was found in Czech Republic (Werknr. 15191). In 1982 it was brought back to Germany. Other parts were taken from the Hispano Ha M1121L. The plane once belonged to Hans Dittes. The Messerschmitt-Stiftung obtained it later. The swastika is forbidden in Germany, that's why there is none.
Despite tha fact, Germany lost world war II, they created the second part 20th century development, , with Wernher Von Braun, and the Peenemunde team inventors and engineers nobody had, at the level of Germany, as to Ferdinand Porsche, the Horten brothers Walter and Renhard, and designs as the flying wing, Stealth Fighter, nobody else as well, had...and through the paper clip operation, these scientists, not all of them, went to the US, and created second half 20th century US Superiority, regarding the rest of the world...
And the Horten flying wing was even more advanced than the 262. It's seriously surprising that flying wings didn't really start showing up from other nations until the B2. The one good thing to come out of Nazi Germany was an incredible technological advance in so many different fields, not just aviation either.
I've always thought the Germans had the best looking everything in WWII. The ME 109 and FW 190 variants are mesmerizing to study. Beautiful camo, markings, all of it. I do just hate the PC crap that prevents some from having the swastika on the tail. IT is how it WAS. Keep it authentic. Doesn't mean you believe in fascism.
Finland had a blue swastika markings already in 1918 when the first airplane for coming FAF was donated to Finland by Swedish Count von Rosen. And this happened long before nobody knew anything about nazis. Swastika is a good luck sign, the nazis just spoiled it. Actually I saw swastikas in Melbourne/Australia on a floor of a City Hall of a suburb about 20 years ago and I think they are still there. And there are still today a number of badges in Finland with swastika, they were designed in early 1920's well before nazi time. If you want to see the only existing Brewster Buffalo from WW2 with war time swastika markings, go to page ilmavoimamuseo.fi/ajankohtaista/brewster-nayttelyssa/ Unfortunately the text is in Finnish, but there are also texts in English in the Internet about this plane. Finnish Air Force had ME109s in operation also after WW2 until about 1955 and there are some in the Aviation Museums in Finland
Eero Kuosmanen I remember seeing old German aircraft flown by the Spanish air force. They were doing a show of strength around Gibraltar in the very late 1960's. (All the roofs in Gibraltar were painted red, white and blue). I remember Dorniers, but were there 109's as well? ,

I can only imagine how this thing handles with all the weight of weapons and armor removed. This bf109 must be insanely maneuverable and climbable.
indeed it is and its not so easy to follow her with the cam ;-)
Fabulous ! hope it shows up at flying legends
I'm a Brit but I have to say that's a sweet little bird. Doesn't sound that much different to a Spit apart from that whistle from the blower. Lovely 👍
Eine unsterbliche Schönheit!
Das ist sie ich habe die sogar als Model
The fact you still heart new comments on this video. I’m impressed.
it seems it became a bit of a classic, haha
It's so fucking awesome to see flying 109s with accurate inverted V engines. It's annoying seeing all the spanish Ha-1112s around
Annoying! Would you still be annoyed if you owned one?
@@Slaktraxi would be ecstatic but the lack of a Daimler benz will always linger on my mind
Super nice video - thanks!! Wanted to see Walter's landing; video really just showed his "roll out". Was it a "three pointer"? Or, a "wheel landing" (with the tail wheel coming down fairly early?) Beautiful aircraft - no question about it.
Why does my heart rate increase so much when i see the Bf 109,Fw 190 and the 262????
+Olaru Bogdan Because we are one with the air, tuned to the beating of the prop, and synchronized with the rattling of the Maschinenkanone. You can't deny it!
+Camden C. (Blacklynx009)
hehe, that´s a good one .
kubanskiloewe Jawohl!
You probably rode 109s and other late german planes in ur past life xD
Große Klasse ❤
The aircraft is now part of the Willy Messerschmitt Museum, which is part of EADS in Germany. They own and operate 3 flyable Me109G aircraft as well as a new-build Me262 replica.
9:00 that sound.. hell yeah!
Daimler Benz 605 makes me come alive to hear it 😁😉👍
in DCS the propeller planes does have their original sounds; try it !
@@kubanskiloewe cool 👍
at 7:10 it sounds like a jet engined plane is passing by. The supercharger just sounds great :)
Die schönste Maschine die jemals gebaut wurde.. durch das Motorengeräusch beim vorbeiflug stellen sich einem die Nackenhaare auf.. es ist und bleibt ein Lebenstraum, einmal die ME 109 fliegen zu dürfen!
Most awesome plane in WW2
Thanks for the insight kubanskiloewe! This sounds advanced for the time. What amazes me is how production, research and advancement could continue under the most difficult of circumstances. I was always puzzled that the 109 undercarriage drawbacks could not be improved, possibly it would have involved significant redesign, sacrificing weight/performance perhaps? Thanks again :-)
Wonder why they designed it with such narrow landing gear opposed to the FW 190 which has a wider span... beautiful Aircraft all the same
From what I've heard, the Bf 109 was conceived as an interceptor and a dogfighter that follows Willy Messerschmitt's lightweight principle of aircraft building.
Because it had to fit into a train w/o detaching the landing gear. This made it very sensitive against bumps on the runway. Lots of crashes.
No doubt..despite the years.. A GREAT AIRPLANE..
Messerschmidt BF 109 ein der besten Jagdflugzeuge des zweiten Weltkrieges. Eine deutsche Legende!
And the Horten flying wing was even more advanced than the 262. It's seriously surprising that flying wings didn't really start showing up from other nations until the B2. The one good thing to come out of Nazi Germany was an incredible technological advance in so many different fields, not just aviation either.
B35, B49.
Vielen Dank für dieses atemberaubende Video !
Doesn't mean you believe in fascism.
sry but this plane is stationed in germany and any swastika is forbidden by law !! get over it !
kubanskiloewe I figured it was. I know the law.
If you want to see the only existing Brewster Buffalo from WW2 with war time swastika markings, go to page

Unfortunately the text is in Finnish, but there are also texts in English in the Internet about this plane.
Finnish Air Force had ME109s in operation also after WW2 until about 1955 and there are some in the Aviation Museums in Finland

I remember seeing old German aircraft flown by the Spanish air force. They were doing a show of strength around Gibraltar in the very late 1960's. (All the roofs in Gibraltar were painted red, white and blue). I remember Dorniers, but were there 109's as well? ,
i completely agree vvith you
Its not only beautiful but deadly too in Gunship sequel
Lol me too gunship sequel
