What people often fail to realise is that they are just nostalgic about being much younger. I get it, we all miss that as we age. But some of us just accept it as getting old, rather than blaming all of society for not collapsing at the same pace as our minds and bodies.
God I wish I was born then. just the atmosphere you can picture watching this video, the streets are quiet very clean looks like a nice day and everyone’s just enjoying life. What a time to be alive it must have been
The 80s were shit, Tories destroying the country especially industry and jobs for the common people, they robbed, and sold the country to benefit a few, its why we're in such a state now, brexit was their final nail in the coffin.
It was a great time to be a teenager, great fashion, music, freedom without technology intrusion into life, great sports, tron style arcades, communities looked out for each other, kids grew up on the streets with freedom for adventures and accidents. Very little school homework yet decent enough schooling to succeed. NHS actually worked. Lots of local shops selling stuff to people who knew each other well. Children able to take part time work for cash if they wanted any age from 11 or 12 years old. If you had an accident no-one was getting sued, you learnt your lesson and got on with life. People fixed each others cars. Kids danced at discos and got off with each other. This was part of learning life lessons. No ID checks, as you grew up it was exciting to get away with things under age. Sometimes this went wrong but mostly it was amazing. People got paid cash, took it home and divided it up for the family and household bills. What was left was for the pub or a party. Of course life wasn’t perfect, but it was more in keeping with the essence of what we are as social human beings thriving on freedom than it is today.
I was born. I was 22 and not long graduated with a degree in botany from a university in south Wales. Millions were out of work (including me) and the miners strike was happening with all the angst and anguish. People were living in carboard boxes. Bleak times if you were actually there. There were some good points. Unemployment had peaked. News was on telly or radio or newspapers and there was no social media magnifying horrors and making sure everyone knew 'how terrible' things were. Our Government used things called D notices to keep bad news out of the media. I could just about keep a 125 Honda in petrol on my dole money and my lovely parents were happy to have me at home rent free so long as I did some stuff around the house. I could travel a bit on the bike and there were interesting things to do that didn't cost much. I was skint but debt free (I went to Uni on a full grant, not a loan). Cars were easy to fix with basic tools but they rotted. Slight accident? Kick it straight and carry on. Now they don't rot as quick, contain lots of plastic and have chips and technobollox throughout that needs serious money to fix. They all look the same. The music was good and every Woolies had a bargain bin where interesting stuff turned up. But it wasn't better than now. Just different
Notice the streets aren't littered with drink cans, fast food wrapping & other crap ... Yes it's certainly a Mad disgusting world we've turned into ! 😥

@@BlackPrimeMinisterI suppose it’s some of the other older cars on the road that make it look old , it wouldn’t be particularly out of the ordinary to see a 2005 car on the road today which would be 20years old , a 20 year old car back then was a 1965 car
I was 16 and seeing a girl from Cas when this video was recorded, she lived on Holywell Ln and we used to walk down into town past the Civic centre all the time. I probably saw this car many times but never realised. Thank you for taking me back to a better time.
This was filmed only 3 days before my 16th birthday ' this film has without dobt bought back some brilliant days in my memory bank ' thanks to whoever film this 👍
Brilliant video. We bought our new sierra in 1985. It broke down on the way home due to a faulty sensor but after that went on for over 10 years. Cortinas were everywhere because they were the best selling car for years. I had a camcorder and wish i had done this to record my town and the commute. It would be fascinating but we didnt think things would change! Incredible memories but lets not fool outselves it wasnt all good.
Loved seeing the old cars, and not one camera strapped to any lampposts, I was driving in the seventies, and owned , a lot of the cars seen, Capri, Daytona yellow, brown vinyl roof, and sports wheels, oh how I wish...
Christ I wish I was back then. 14 and not a care in the world. Both parents still with us, all 4 grandparents living at the bottom of our road, just so great. This actually bought a tear to my eye.
I was struck by how many of the cars were British made or at least made by companies with factories here. It would be really interesting to drive the same route and post them side by side for comparison. Thanks for posting, I was 24 when this was filmed, I didn't appreciate how good I had it.
Love this! Just appreciate that some people took the time back then to film these scenes for us to be nostalgic about now. I turned 16 in 1985 and was just itching to get to 17 so I could start my driving lessons. Seeing all the old Fords that I would love to own now in this video is kind of sad knowing that all of them were scrapped years ago. Still, did pass my test about a year and a half after this was filmed and ended up with an old Vauxhall Chevette as my first car. My following car was the one I still miss. A 1982 Cortina 2.0 GLS in red with a black vinyl roof. Lovely car that was. Next car after that was a Mk 2 Escort Mexico also in red.
I love the breaking distance and dive at the beginning, i remember the old cars, backside nearly off the seat standing on the pedal 😂😂 loved this video, what a lovely drive through nostalgia, 75 vintage here!! I too would happily return to that era through to the mid/late 90s, that seemed to be our peak for good times in life, the new millenium has been never ending grief it feels.
So love seeing all the older cars, in this video there are far more ford cortinas than sierras due to the sierra been launched in 1983 i believe? What i find amazing is the sheer difference in cars between say this 1985 video to 1995, just 10 years, I guess we dont realise how certain things progress, change so much. Also to note look at how uncluttered the streets are, normal decent roads without traffic calming messures, speed bumps, signs everywhere etc
Yes the roads were better then, with no council meddling. And that likes of President Khan, finding more exuses to fleece the motorist in London, & beyond
@@251hanomag yes there is just too much traffic now, cars are just too big and bulky now esp the SUVs and together with speed bumps, cameras, traffic calming messures and signs everywhere its not pleasant anymore.
More of this please. The cars took me right back to childhood. Totally forgot how the roads were back then, not many cars, no potholes and clean road markings. The pavements are without litter and are weed free. Happy times.
Excellent , Cortinas, Cavaliers, Astras and so many others, takes me back. The old cars were never the best starters in the winter even after pulling the choke out, great memories
With only 1 tenth of the number of cars on the road, it was a wonderful time to live. Imagine walking down the street now and for every 10 cars you see, 9 would not exist. Add to that house prices of about 16k. For that area, people knowing their neighbours and have the same cultural values. I do miss the UK.
I'm not a million miles away in Normy, but I was always down Cas watching rugby league and a bit of shopping. This was just after the strike and the town and people were just getting back on their feet. It's great to see how it was yesterday and compare to nowadays 😢

Sheesh, all those Leyland cars! When I was a child, many of those were standard fodder for the bottom-of-the-market, Arfur Daley kind of car dealer selling stuff to those on a budget.
Love it, I had those spoilers on my wiper place arms, so cool, bought them from Halfords. ❤ saw a brilliant Cavalier SRi, my dream car back in the 80s as my dad had one, a whopping 132bhp, which was a lot then.
What an awesome video. I was 16 back then, little did I realise just how crappy this country would become, how run down everywhere would get and how much I would feel like a stranger in my own country. Just look at the cars in the footage, most would be worth a small fortune now but we just took them all for granted back then. Bring back these times again, great music, great cars, decent people (mostly) and people who weren't obsessed with themselves and fixated to their phone screens.
I was still 15 then , turned 16 a week after Live Aid. I wish I could go back! Love looking at the old cars and fashions - nowadays there’ll be SUVs parked on both sides of those streets making them virtually one way , if you can avoid the potholes , cones and temp traffic lights that is.
@Altair885 nope, there was more choice then than now.all you get these days is one box designs mostly shared by everyone.look at today's vans, apart from transit everybody else's van is the same body with different engines and mechanicals.even internal dashboards etc are the same.back then you had saloons,estates,4x4s,5 doors,3 doors, hatchbacks, sports cars, convertibles, loads of choice.plenty of independent manufacturers, nowadays they all seem to be owned by the same company's,hence the reason they all look the same.
@@ivanfernyhough3851 Okay, let's take vans for a moment. So you had transit mk2 , sherpa, Bedford cf. Was their styling much different from one another? Today's vans are much the same shape because that's the most efficient and practical use of space. But there are plenty of models even if manufactures share designs.
I love seeing these little time capsules randomly pop up on UA-cam. Would love to notice myself in one just casually walking down the street with no idea it had been caught on film. Alas, not yet...
Nice video, reminds me of my youth, I'd just finished school in May '85. The route is a loop- Lower Oxford Street, Beancroft Road, Smawthorne Lane, Pontefract Road, then on to Ferrybridge Road.
All those people going about their business oblivious to the fact that 39 years later, they be in a video on a video sharing platform. Also, look how many cars there aren't!!!! I was 16 in 1985. Brilliant time to be alive.

My dad had an Triumph estate car and if he was taking a few of us on the street to school none of us would be in the seats we would all be sitting in the boot
That silver Ford Sierra estate looks like it was from the future compared to everything else on the road. I miss these cars as commonplace on the streets, although grateful for the improvements in safety.
The ford sierra was like a car from the future then. Remember when the mk2 Astra came out. Probably a year or so after this. Took a bit of getting used to
Back when the people of castleford respected the place, the streets look clean and no litter. It goes by my grandma and grandads on lower oxford street, i was 3 at the end of May of this year, very nostalgic.

What people often fail to realise is that they are just nostalgic about being much younger. I get it, we all miss that as we age. But some of us just accept it as getting old, rather than blaming all of society for not collapsing at the same pace as our minds and bodies.
You can tell it was the eighties people were using their indicators

What a pleasant time to be alive 😍
I was born in 1950. If I had a time machine and took a group of 25 year olds back to 1985 not one would want to return to the present1
It was my childhood, it was an amazing time. People were just different and more human then.
Look how cleaner the roads were and less busy, happy times,no cctv camera crap either didnt need any then
No walking tents and machete
Way more serial killers in those days.

I was just starting secondary school when this was filmed and - whilst I didn't like anywhere near this town - I do remember growing up in that world (1980's Britain).
Playing D&D listening to Metal and drinking beer with pals, long evenings out on the Chopper grifter or New toy Bmx.
The Arcades, Cinema, Making Dens in the Woods and camping, Entire summers and autumns fishing, no worries.

I don't think it looks old-fashioned at all. It was peak culture back then, which is why Gen Z kids are shamelessly ripping-off 1980s style as if they were there.

This song was forty years too early. We had no idea that this was as good as it was going to get, nostalgic but sad to watch.
Its actually amazing going back in this video seeing all of those fantastic classic cars actually being driven!
Fair it wasn't Al good at all, but also it wasn't anywhere near this bad, there was a feeling of community that has been severely eroded sadly.

Great tune
Seeing the cars of my youth ...makes me grin like a loon. How far we've come.
Oh man! Saw the silver and black Astra in the thumbnail and instant nostalgia! 😊👍🥲 Thank you, buddy!
I was 12 year old. OMG. I remember these days. I grew up in Lancashire. I remember those clear blue skies. We were all so much more innocent than now.
Many memories both good and bad of the eighties, much more of a simple life.
The world felt more bustling, authentic and colourful. You weren't so repressed. It felt like you could make anything happen if you really wanted to.
It was a time of recession and miners' strikes.
@@adambattersby8934 it's because we were young with no responsibilities tho
This takes me right back to when I first started driving. The cars, the street scene and atmosphere of the time. 👍
More of this please. The cars took me right back to childhood. Totally forgot how the roads were back then, not many cars, no potholes and clean road markings. The pavements are without litter and are weed free. Happy times.

Fascinating to watch these knowing it was another 4-5 years until I was born 😊. Anyone else fascinated by times just before you existed?
With only 1 tenth of the number of cars on the road, it was a wonderful time to live. Imagine walking down the street now and for every 10 cars you see, 9 would not exist. Add to that house prices of about 16k. For that area, people knowing their neighbours and have the same cultural values. I do miss the UK.
