    I would prefer a more period buckle if only for authenticity, a more delicate perhaps thinner strap as was worn back in early 1900's although I do agree, this buckle does look great and suits the case and strap very well. I have some new old stock expanding bracelets that would look good on this though they are a swine for hair pinching. Can't remember the brand (something like Vertex or Pearlex, something like that) now for the life of me without digging them out but I bought a card stand full of them in assorted flavours as they used to display in newsagents and tobacconist type shops when I were a lad, knee high to a grasshopper 😂.
    1st Baltany I bought was the military chrono with VK63 mechaquartz if I remember correctly, still love it and gets worn regularly at weekends in rotation.

    The small seconds version looks even better, but of course the Miyota movement in this "regular" three hander is far superior. Although I do like the dial colour and the way the numerals are printed I will say I like other Baltany watches more, in parts because this one is fully polished.

    I've just received the Seagull version and I'm very pleased with it.
    I got one of their dirty dozen watches just over a month ago and, and this watch caught my eye then but, as I've got a similarly styled Oris big crown that I wear quite a lot, I felt that that, there was too much of an overlap between the styles to warrant getting one. Funnily enough, at the time, it did cross my mind that, if they were going to do a vintage piece of this sort, maybe they should have gone for a small second hand full mechanical , which was more in keeping with the watches of this period.
    So, when the Seagull based variation came along, just a couple of weeks ago, I jumped straight onto it. The £100 price difference didn't really make the deal for me (although it did make it easier to justify getting a watch that I definitely don't need in a similar style to one that I already own). My decision to go for the Seagull version was just because, to my mind, it ticked more of boxes that I felt that a period correct piece should have (although it's a good thing that Baltany do seem to be more than willing to depart from tradition in all the right places - the traditional watches of this style tended to be around 33mm with fixed lugs)
    As you mentioned, the two variants of this style also come with a selection of different finishes and it seems that the more attractive variations are currently appearing on the more expensive model. My preferred finish would have been to go with the tarnished silver style case (which appears sporadically as an option on the Miyota based version) and the off white dial. However, neither of these options is available on the Seagull variation at present. My concern with going for the polished case / mother of pearl dial was that it might be a bit too blingy, but as it turns out, it looks really great and it's no more or less blingy than any normal watch with a white dial.
    Although you can see the pearlescent quality of the dial under extremely bright light, you have to go looking for it and it's certainly not in your face. In normal lighting, the overall appearance of the dial is more like an enamel type finish. Depending on the ambient light, the dial can take on a hue varying from white, or off white to grey, or silver.
    I was also unsure about the cushion style case. I am not a great fan of square or tonneau styles and it was difficult from the photographs to determine what it would look like (the wrist shots in your video would have been invaluable if only it had been around at the time). Again it's something that I needn't have worried about as, despite the fact that the case is clearly not round, it somehow has enough of a curve in the case, that the overall impression that comes across is that of a round watch.
    Although the case size is more or less the same as the dirty dozen, because the cushion takes up more room, when you place the two watches side by side, the dial of the 1926 appears much smaller. Despite this it is nevertheless quite readable.
    Even though I have quite small wrists and I tend to prefer smaller watches, there is something about the case shape and the lug to lug length on this watch that seem to create a presence on the wrist that is bigger than the watch. I don't think it looks particularly small in the video and, whilst it's not going to get a recommendation for those who like larger watches, I think that most people can get away with it.
    The leather strap is quite thick and seems to be very comfortable. However, it does seem to be quite short (which is something else that someone with a bigger wrist might want to take into consideration). I'm not sure how well the leather keepers will hold up to the watch being taken off and put back on on a regular basis .
    I've literally only had my watch for a couple of days so I can't pass a definitive judgement but, my dirty dozen has been running at around -9 seconds, which is nothing to complain about (my recent Seiko 5 field watch runs at -15). I don't want to jinx my 1926, which, like I said, has only seen a couple of days of full wear but, in the that time, it's literally been running at a rate of 0 with a variation of +/- 1! Unfortunately, I do tend to find that the initial rate does tend to drop off within a month or two, but, if it starts like that, it's not going to get any better.
    The only sign of cheapness in the movement was that I felt that the crown was a bit spongy when I pulled it out to set the hands initially. It may be that I was just being a bit too gentle when I was handling my new watch, but, if that does turn out to be a weak point, I can keep the watch running for a long time at a rate of 0 before I have to worry about it. :-)

    Looks great but the lugs really let it down. If they were wire lugs or at least stepped down from the rest of the case they would look a lot better. With all the work that went into it to make it look like it’s from the 1910’s-1920’s the lugs destroy that look😢

    I prefer at least 40 mm watches and quartz since I have too many mechanical watches and every watch requires a wind box

    I love the look but these watches are really getting out of my comfort zone price wise. I understand that you get what you pay for but $300 is a huge stretch for me and if I were spending that I would want to buy something with a more respected name.

    Spearman! Do you wear the watch on the left and throw with the right? Or left and left? You might need to look at the watch before you throw !! 😁

    I really like the small second version, how does Baltany deal with the issue of a screw down crown on a hand wind movement? If you wind it all the way up until it stops, you have to wait a few hours to screw in the crown, which seems annoying.

    • @dankrix3384
      @dankrix3384 2 роки тому +1

      I've had my eye on this one too. I thought there was a clutch to stop overwinding, that would also let you screw down the crown after a full winding?

    • @paulsonoda245
      @paulsonoda245 2 роки тому

      @@dankrix3384 The ST1701 cannot be overwound as it's an automatic (I own one), but as far as I know the ST1700(I don't own one) is a manual movement and will hard stop once it's fully wound. They only thing I can think that they did was put a St1701 in the watch with the auto-winding works removed to save the space but just a possible guess.
