  • Welcome to my minibike series! In this episode I go over how to hot rod a Coleman CT200U and increase its top speed by 13 MPH! I cover how to remove the speed governor, install and adjust heavy duty valve springs, and installing a performance carburetor kit! But that's not all! Stay tuned for when my friends and I race the mini bikes we modify in the Gambler Mini Bike 100 Mile Enduro!
    UPDATE! I've learned and improved a ton since doing this first video. Check out my minibike playlist here: • Motorcycles and Mini B...

    10 years ago, I got into 4 stroke open class go karts. At the time, they ran the 200cc engines. Started out with a cheap clone engine. During the 3 years, I swapped out pretty much everything, apart from the rocker stems. Broke 2 crankshafts, 1 set of lifter rods and rockers. Chewed up 3 stock con-rods. Embedded so much metal into the cylinder wall, I decided to build the engine from scratch. New block and side cover. Genuine Honda crankshaft. ARC billet rod, flat top piston, billet flywheel. Light weight aluminum pushrods, performance camshaft, stiffened rockers. Stainless steel valves, seats and bronze valve stems. Stiffer springs. Was a mix match of different kits available from different race shops. Also, upgraded to a Mikuni VM32. Dunno, how many horses it made(probably 12-15HP), but it got to 50-60 mph on the straights easy in a 150lb go-kart. Moral of the story: never EVER run stock clone parts past 4000 rpm. They will not survive for long, 2-3 hours tops.

    This was much easier on B&S engines from the 1970's. My brother and I defeated the governor on our 2 seat Sears go-kart with an original top speed of about 18 mph. We got it up to about 35, but the engine lasted only about 45 minutes at that speed. It was a thrilling 45 minutes though.

  • @dstolarc
    @dstolarc 5 років тому +70

    You guys took the governor out the hard way. It is super easy to do if you remove the flywheel first. Then take a punch and push the shaft holding it into the block. Everything comes out with the shaft. Then remove the gear, You can pull that clip off easily, then put the shaft back in the block. Easy Peasy.

    Here's a Hint for cold starting any of these engines. With the Kill Switch on Kill... Give it Full gas twice....Crank the engine over twice with the Choke on.... This gets a little fuel sucked into the Compression Chamber AND gets some Oil flowing at the same time (less dry start damage!) *Then Turn the KILL Switch OFF and give it a good Pull.... it should Fire right up !*

    Don't be afraid to replace the rope on your original starter. It's not that hard to do to wind a new rope on. Pull the rope to put tension on the spring, wind the rope around the pulley while holding it from winding itself back, and then pull again. You can add tension this way. Once you've done a few, you'll never hesitate to take your rope start apart again. Getting it back in order is easy.

    When doing valve adjustment the engine should always be cold. I don't know why you made them tighter than the spec you were told. That is counter productive as the valve naturally get tight over time and you just shortened the time when you will need to adjust them again. If anything you should have made them a little looser and gone 7 and 9 instead of 5 and 7. This not only allows for more time between adjustment, but it allows a little more flow through the valves and less wear on the cam lobes.

    I zipped tied the governor spring under the gas tank and got 35mph outta mine without breaking the engine down. A lot of videos out on how to do that.

    I got mine to go 31mph top speed and 17 mph average speed with cutting the gov screw and putting a zip tie on the gov arm, not sure if that really makes a difference now that I have the screw off but all I know is I’m hauling with that thing and I haven’t touched the inside of the motor. I love this thing and I’ve been having a lot of fun! Next I plan on getting the whole air filter and carburetor upgraded!

    Torque converter and a v twin worked wonders for us. We used an adult size mini bike with the long seat. We add front and rear disc brakes with appropriate wheels and tires. Battery lights and signals. Licensed too. Bike has Springer front end. Its 😎

    I'm not sure if everybody is aware but all you have to do is just dis connect the rigid line from the governor to the throttle plate and run a separate cable to the throttle plate.on the carburetor With a spring so the throttle goes back while depressed and that simply bypasses the governor there's no need removing the pin in the gear so you could do it with out having to remove the engine though I think that's a lot of the fun

    Cool video. It's always fun to get more speeeeed. But can't you just disconnect the governor linkage from the carburetor? We used to do that with Tecumseh mini bike engines. I think we had to fiddle with a spring too. I remember we used to burn out the clutch going up hills full throttle. But that was about 40 years ago. :-)
