HOTROD Your Coleman Mini Bike! 13 MPH Speed Gain!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 тра 2018
- Welcome to my minibike series! In this episode I go over how to hot rod a Coleman CT200U and increase its top speed by 13 MPH! I cover how to remove the speed governor, install and adjust heavy duty valve springs, and installing a performance carburetor kit! But that's not all! Stay tuned for when my friends and I race the mini bikes we modify in the Gambler Mini Bike 100 Mile Enduro!
UPDATE! I've learned and improved a ton since doing this first video. Check out my minibike playlist here: • Motorcycles and Mini B...

Like this video?! Check out the same bike 5 YEARS LATER! It's now an off road monster! ua-cam.com/video/V6NgRBYaXfg/v-deo.html
I’ll never forget the day I first rode our mini bike as a kid. It had no brakes at all. I drove around the yard and got moving pretty good then wham right into the close line pole.
😂😂😂 the good ole days
I got a sick feeling in my stomach when you were grinding off the governor arm with the crankcase open right next to it.
Me too! Nothing like a little carbide grit in there!
I was cringing.
Good point.
DdubizL Does it same it just hurt to watch
@Mr. Forgetful Red loctite. It didn't ever get loose. Although crashing it twice in the Gambler 100 mile race killed it pretty good. :-)
10 years ago, I got into 4 stroke open class go karts. At the time, they ran the 200cc engines. Started out with a cheap clone engine. During the 3 years, I swapped out pretty much everything, apart from the rocker stems. Broke 2 crankshafts, 1 set of lifter rods and rockers. Chewed up 3 stock con-rods. Embedded so much metal into the cylinder wall, I decided to build the engine from scratch. New block and side cover. Genuine Honda crankshaft. ARC billet rod, flat top piston, billet flywheel. Light weight aluminum pushrods, performance camshaft, stiffened rockers. Stainless steel valves, seats and bronze valve stems. Stiffer springs. Was a mix match of different kits available from different race shops. Also, upgraded to a Mikuni VM32. Dunno, how many horses it made(probably 12-15HP), but it got to 50-60 mph on the straights easy in a 150lb go-kart. Moral of the story: never EVER run stock clone parts past 4000 rpm. They will not survive for long, 2-3 hours tops.
Great points! I'd suggest checking my videos after this one. I've done a fair amount of the upgrades you mention.
liked and subbed, i've been tinkering since i was 7, at 19 bought a bug, swapped the engine on it in 90 minutes. life does throw you some curves, had congestive heart failure 2 years ago, got myself a "valve job", now i'm runnin fine :)
mr bad example did you remove the governor?
the governor on what?
Your heart
they thought about a pacemaker at the time when they threw in the new valve, but i am currently "un-governed" :)
@@mrbadx19 glad your still here tickin away, next time ask them to install larger valves with a good 5 angle valve job on it lol
This was much easier on B&S engines from the 1970's. My brother and I defeated the governor on our 2 seat Sears go-kart with an original top speed of about 18 mph. We got it up to about 35, but the engine lasted only about 45 minutes at that speed. It was a thrilling 45 minutes though.
You guys took the governor out the hard way. It is super easy to do if you remove the flywheel first. Then take a punch and push the shaft holding it into the block. Everything comes out with the shaft. Then remove the gear, You can pull that clip off easily, then put the shaft back in the block. Easy Peasy.
100% right - a quick tappy tap tap and it’s out
I did it this way but I left the clip on and when I put the shaft back I took a washer before the clip and put it back to prevent the shaft from falling into the engine if it ever happened
i js unscrewed mine off my b200r
Add Straight pipe Mufler, take trotle screw off, add smaller sprocket, bigger air filter i didnt change my carb .runs nice not hard to start dont have to keep giving trotle to keep it running.
so completely remove the throttle screw??? which one is it? and did you lose a lot of low end by using a smaller sproket? What does the straight pipe muffler do for it? Thanks!
@@nobodyspecialdotorgrichard5971 They already have lots of torque so I doubt using a smaller sprocket would be that big of a deal and a straight pipe muffler increases airflow
I just did another build video! Added a Torque Converter, Predator 212 Hemi and Front Suspension. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/_RaZy4w6oUw/v-deo.html
First i thot it was click bait
You are an amazing UA-cam by working on the mini bike 💪
@@chrisromo8845 Click bate is not my thing... for better or worse.
Oh man... the bikes got messed up in the race last weekend. Should I do a video about how to fix a mini bike that's been decimated? :-) Video about the race is up now! Go watch it!
What happened?
Watch the video recapping the race! It's pretty fun (and in the same playlist as this video). One bike survives, the other does not.
I need help with my mini bike
You need to put a torque converter on it
Jason Explains Things! YUP,I GOT 2 NEEDING TLC
Never watch one of your videos, literally thought I was watching a ad for a can cleaning service for a second! That was a good one lol
Lmao I love the US General toolbox with "Snap-On" taped over it
Where can I get me a Snap On sticker? 🤣👍🇺🇸 Ingenious!
@@kenkozma3780 yeah...dosen't everyone do this with cheap tool boxes.
I have real snap on tool boxes that are from my great grandpa
@@subs-dz1uh no everyone doesn't do the same thing obviously
@@jimfancy-pants6221 oh, ok, cool
Impressive video mate and great editing skills for a youtuber who has this amount of subs, I love it keep going!
You guys are awesome love seeing grown men who still know how to have fun!
That was both fun and interesting to watch. There is more involved with the upgrades than I originally thought, but this video should help! Thanks, Jason!
Here's a Hint for cold starting any of these engines. With the Kill Switch on Kill... Give it Full gas twice....Crank the engine over twice with the Choke on.... This gets a little fuel sucked into the Compression Chamber AND gets some Oil flowing at the same time (less dry start damage!) *Then Turn the KILL Switch OFF and give it a good Pull.... it should Fire right up !*
Thanks for the information 👍
we learn from our mistakes and can also from each others mistakes. I love your enthusiasm.
Thats how we men learn!
Thanks for explaining everything and showing really appreciate it no one usually takes their time to write on the screen how to do it and show it thank you
Great!!!! Job brother.... I'll give you two thumbs up!!!! You gave me and my grand son some great ideas...my 7 year old thanks you too!!!!
I learned a lot of stuff the hard way but it always paid off in the end
Don't be afraid to replace the rope on your original starter. It's not that hard to do to wind a new rope on. Pull the rope to put tension on the spring, wind the rope around the pulley while holding it from winding itself back, and then pull again. You can add tension this way. Once you've done a few, you'll never hesitate to take your rope start apart again. Getting it back in order is easy.
Totally. Noob mistake.
The most entertaining video I have seen in a while!!! Headed to Tractor supply to get one!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it!
Awesome video, great to see people mess up, own it, and figure it back out!
Alex83 thanks man!
This and other minibike videos of mine got featured on an episode of #DieselBrothers on @Discovery! If you found my channel from that episode... Welcome!
By the way Jason I'm just like you bud I believe in doing everything yourself and I'm living by that motto my whole life I have learned all forms of automotive from turning wrenches to Bodywork to not just being a parts changer but also understanding the reasoning why certain components are there I also do full TurnKey remodel for a living anything I've ever been able to get my Hands-On I have learned it's awesome that you're trying to get the younger generation to be more Hands-On my hat's off to you bud you ever have a question about anything just hit me up I'll most definitely surprise you on my knowledge of just about anything you can put your hands on and everyday life I always thought it wasn't worth a million dollars a day to be away from my family so it's close to that as I can get I would always do also the main key is if I can save myself $1000000 in a lifetime it would be worth it awesome video bud I can understand how I made it to the discovery Channel
Hey putt a lifan engine ( copu from cud 90 honda)
How about just putting some bigger tires....like those big fat bike tires. 26".....it should make it alot faster
0:20-0:30 way too relatable here in 2020, feel it in my soul.
A little surprised you didn't just bypass the governor lever over removing it all entirely just cuz bypassing it is waaaaaay easier.
Im currently in this process of modifying my mini bike and this video helped a lot now i kind of know what i need to get and what i need to do
Glad you mentioned the stiffer valve springs, seen some people do the governor delete without mentioning(or installing) . _. Valve and piston no play patty cake
Love the snap-on tool box
Love the VW... I've got a 67, my first car. Also just ordered a new Colman mini bike. Thank for the video 😊
Good stuff! Don't know how I didn't find you before since we both do the same things... VWs and minibikes! Thanks much for your videos, subbed!
Awesome! You sir have good taste.
Inspiration at it's finest..
Nice video. I just ordered my CT200, waiting for it to come in... I can't wait so I'll watch guys like you and RBG to get my fix for now
Shawn GT Thanks man!
How is it now
What a great channel!!!! I know enough about engines to know what I'm talking about, but not real hands on. You give me hope!!! Looking forward to more vids!!! My new favorite channel!!
Jeff Jones Thanks man!
Cool video and nice work. I had fun watching this. Reminds me of stuff I'd do and that I like doing. 👍
Your videos are funny as hell and I'm learning something
Nice work Jason. Thanks for sharing!
MnJ Outdoors thanks for watching! Your views and positive feedback means a lot.
Awesome!! I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago!
I just got my Predator 212 a few days ago and removed the governor and oil level sensor. I can't wait to mess with the carburetor, need a Mikuni!,...and my new gas tank that's coming.
I can't wait to get my Coleman ct100u the way I want it!
I have added a backrest and changed the seat.
there is a monoshock underneath the seat attached to the frame that helps tremendously with all the bumps and bruises you're going to get along the way... Lol
Wish I could show a pic of the beast!
SO MUCH FUN!!!!!
thanks for the tutorials! very helpful
Not to mention the beeeeaautifuuul beetle sitting next to you, while you're breaking stuff. Nice color!
Thanks! Love that car. There’s a few videos about it on the channel.
Laughing with you ! Great video ! I just picked up a minibike just like yours,
This is awesome how too! Just subbed thx!
Change out those knobbys for a street tire in a different size, especially in the rear and you could probably get pretty close to 40mph. Taking off the front fender or adjusting it so it's more snug against the tire should also make a bit of a difference.
This is old but I have a ct200u, how would I adjust the fenders? Or would it do better without
Thats awesome. Just found the video and realized I was on the same gambler in 2018
Nice! The video about the race is awesome. Please check it out. I made videos about 2018 and 2019.
I have the ex model and it’s a blast. I did the tab bend trick on the throttle to by pass the governor without major surgery.
so did i its a huge difference
How do you do that??
I was looking at how much these remind me of working on a VW engine and then I noticed the Beetle in the background!
Like you like me! like your honesty and characterisations.
Thanks!
Love your videos man! BTW, what GPS speed app do you use?
This was great...I just brought the Red Coleman bike for myself....must get it modified for top speed has you did.
What is the performance difference between the 18lb spring and the 22lb spring for the stock coleman ct200 engine? Would putting in 22lb springs hurt any performance?
Great video guys, never mind the subject .. just great production!!
Nigel’s Mustang and Models many thanks!
That’s pretty cool I have dirt bikes and go carts but not a minibike
You would love my coleman mini bike. Goes 60 mph. Governor bypass, straight pipe exhaust, cold air intake, and the rear sprocket it’s now a 44 tooth and the sprocket coming off of the torque converter is I think a 12 tooth. Other than that it’s stock. I don’t know if you can run any higher octane in the motor besides 87 or if you did, would it even help it be faster
easier way is to change the size of the drive sprocket with a 2 part so u can swap sizes out but nice video !
Im a new subscriber. I stumbled across your videos and here i am
When doing valve adjustment the engine should always be cold. I don't know why you made them tighter than the spec you were told. That is counter productive as the valve naturally get tight over time and you just shortened the time when you will need to adjust them again. If anything you should have made them a little looser and gone 7 and 9 instead of 5 and 7. This not only allows for more time between adjustment, but it allows a little more flow through the valves and less wear on the cam lobes.
This is a huge help!
Best tutorial out here
Your part about learning how to do things hit me at home. Of course we can pay someone to fix something at our local shop. I have an 18 month old boy and another boy on the way. I would love to learn and be able to share that knowledge with them.
Chris G your comment made my day Sir.
@@JasonExplainsThings Thank you for the inspiration man. I just purchased that same red Coleman ct200u. A little daunting thinking about upgrades and parts since i know nothing about mechanics, but I will take it one step at a time.
Hey man , not sure if it has been answered but on gopower’s website there are several options for the carb - what type of cable do I get ? add twist grip? add vent filter kit? adapter size ? upgrade to oem carb or is aftermarket ok? Thanks in advance and great videos !
Stock bike will do 27 with the throttle screw backed out. At least according to my local speed trap sign. But looks like you guys added some torque as I see the front wheel came up! See you at the enduro!!
Dirty Kid Gang
Billy Lemos Wow that’s a lot faster than the two we worked on! Looking forward to it.
I got mine to 25mph
I took the screw all the way out and got mine up to 41
@@ianshook3378 I'm sure that thing back fires like hell now when you turn it off
With a gearing adjustment or a torque converter I bet it could get in the upper 40s or even 50
Ok I need a mini bike now. Did Gambler 500 a few weeks ago, this things look so fun.
Beau Miklethun I was at the Gambler 500 2 weeks ago too! Check my channel for the videos! 👍
you had me motivated and inspired to want to do things for myself and the next thing you said was you ordered a new pull start rope. hahaha
Good job, and fun! I recommend editing your vid and covering your POV plates so the midnight rambler doesn't visit your garage. Just say'n...
“-Just took out the governor.”
*FBI open up!*
Awesome video. I have gained lots from it.
Do you have a video that goes deeper into adjusting the valves and springs?
Yes! Check the minibike/motorcycle playlist. The engine is a full on stage 2 build now.
hey love the vid just got my own mini bike
Your vw looks on fire!!!
When taking governor out remember to take out the washer behind it as well.
I screwed up something when I took the governor off my mini bike now it goes full throttle when I turn off the choke. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Awesome vid brother this is y I subscribed
Subbed, good fun. I was emotionally affected.
I zipped tied the governor spring under the gas tank and got 35mph outta mine without breaking the engine down. A lot of videos out on how to do that.
Yeah when I was younger I used to do the same thing you're doing and I got a bike now I'm having a hard time put back together but you give me a lot of my memory back of what I did while I was young to get my bike to go now I know how to make go faster thanks to you guys hey thank you keep it up
It’s a bitch but you can do it, what kind of mini bike? Mines a 2018 Coleman 196cc Baja warrior
Enjoyed the video
When you did your spring’s how did you hold your valves up ?
How did you guys connect the throttle cable onto the engine after pulling the governor?
I got mine to go 31mph top speed and 17 mph average speed with cutting the gov screw and putting a zip tie on the gov arm, not sure if that really makes a difference now that I have the screw off but all I know is I’m hauling with that thing and I haven’t touched the inside of the motor. I love this thing and I’ve been having a lot of fun! Next I plan on getting the whole air filter and carburetor upgraded!
Torque converter and a v twin worked wonders for us. We used an adult size mini bike with the long seat. We add front and rear disc brakes with appropriate wheels and tires. Battery lights and signals. Licensed too. Bike has Springer front end. Its 😎
As far as the Carburetor what size throttle cable and adapter did you get?
Looks like a whole lot of fun for a small $dollar$ 👍
Just took governer and all linkage now I have the problem of the butterfly on carb our do you make that work for air flow
i noticed a gti in the video. i have an mk7.5 and im curious will the bike fit in the back with the seats flat? or is it way off. ive only seen the mini bikes in stores
Where can I get those springs at? I know u said they were 18lbs... But what size and stuff ? Curious on how u found that info and where I can get them... Please! 🙏 Thank u in advance!
ABG from Iowa Brother!
After installing the air filter part of the kit it seems to idle quite rough even with the stock jet reinstalled.
did you notice the front tire bounces and make the forks vibrate alot when you take off till you get up to speed
I'll be buying one tomorrow but it looks like it's easy but once you get to doing it seemed like it not at easy as it looks but I wonder how much can labor charge you for a great job like you have shard???
Fantastic!
Stupid question, i bought a Coleman bt200x and about the 5th day my chain popped off, i got it back on but it's SUPER loose, anyone know how I would tighten the chain? Thank you for any answers!
Love this video
I'm not sure if everybody is aware but all you have to do is just dis connect the rigid line from the governor to the throttle plate and run a separate cable to the throttle plate.on the carburetor With a spring so the throttle goes back while depressed and that simply bypasses the governor there's no need removing the pin in the gear so you could do it with out having to remove the engine though I think that's a lot of the fun
I heard that gear mechanism will explode
"Learn how to do it yourself!"
My motto, right or wrong! :D
I'd like too own a bike like that with that speed would be amazing
I removed the govenor off my son's coolman ct100u, hes a little over 80 pounds so he went flying down the street. These bikes are great.
Nice. I just got a ct100 for my daughter.
I just bought a 212 Predator from Harbor Freight and installed it then called it done. I got the exact same speed.
Cool video. It's always fun to get more speeeeed. But can't you just disconnect the governor linkage from the carburetor? We used to do that with Tecumseh mini bike engines. I think we had to fiddle with a spring too. I remember we used to burn out the clutch going up hills full throttle. But that was about 40 years ago. :-)
im thinking about getting another one to make it fast, the one i have now i use for offroad.
I recommend a Genuine Stella 150cc scooter with a polini kit and sito plus exhaust.Way fun!
Can this work on a stock motovox 80cc motor with out it exploding?
