NOTE: I described the climbing very poorly and got my details wrong in this video. This is corrected in my AC2 video.
Metal Gear Solid V Sucks and I Love It Part 2 is still coming. It's already longer than this video. But I'm still gonna need a while to finish it up. Editing isn't easy work... Speaking of which, the majority of the editing here wasn't done by me, but rather by my brother, Luke. I called upon his help while I worked on MGSV. He put it together from my footage and voice recordings, and then I took it and added some of my own pizzaz so it still felt like one of my videos. Check out his and my friend Josh's channel to show your support (Link on my channel page).
I'll also point out that there's an error in the video at 34:36. The "52" appears too early. That was my fault.
Anyway, if you noticed, I sorta don't acknowledge the existence of my other project in this video. That wasn't to fuck with you, that was just a byproduct. I made the script for this all the way back in September of 2021. Well before I started work on MGSV. My plans regarding working on more of these games is... basically on hold at the moment. I have footage for every game up until 3. And a script is partially made for AC2. But it's been in that state for about 10 months now. I will get back to this eventually, but MGSV Part 2 comes first.
For now, this is to hold you over. I'm glad I was able to get this out, cuz it's my birthday tomorrow and I didn't wanna work then. Hope you enjoy this video.

Tbh, it makes sense for Altair to kill the informants when he's done with them. If they spill the tea on their bosses after a few punches, Altair really can't trust them to not squeal on him being in the area, hunting them down

According to Nolan North, who voices Desmond, he did the read for the final scene where Desmond sees blood on the wall. Then he said, "Okay guys, I've got to run to the bathroom, then we can get started recording the next part." And the Ubisoft guys all looked at each other awkwardly, then explained to him that he'd just recorded the ending of the game.

Assassin's Creed 1 is one of those games that if you played today, it's easy to pick apart the rinse and repeat missions and slow pace, but you have to factor in the impact this game had when it was released back in 2007 after the PS2/Xbox generation consoles. Having been in high school when it released, coming from an open world like GTA San Andreas with PS2 graphics to the incredibly detailed worlds of Assassin's Creed 1 and Far Cry 2 on PS3 was unfathomably breathtaking from a technical and gameplay standpoint. The attention to graphical detail, parkour, climbing, physics in AC 1 was unbelievable. Seeing Altair climb and grab every little crevice and crease of the building and getting in sword fights and running away to a leap of faith was enough to keep gamers entertained for HOURS.
Have the missions and story held up today? Not at all, which is why you tore it apart in this video and like you said yourself, you were a small child when this came out, so your coming from a modern perspective of being familiar with the next gen game experiences. But experiencing this game for the first time, especially coming from a last gen game like Prince of Persia Sand of Time, it was a complete game changer and it's the reason why this game was a franchise starter. If there is any quality about this game that still holds up today, it has to be the tone and atmosphere, that is mostly brought on by the beautiful setting in Damascus, Jerusalem, and Damascus and it's still my favorite AC game to climb around and take out crusade era Templars.

another thing about the rinse and repeat missions was that, even though you didn't have to do all of em, the game actually made it worth your while by having them actually have an effect on the main mission. I miss this feature, I really wish they fleshed it out more in the later games. Plus, the side missions were all plausible "assassin" activities (aside from the timed "collect the flag" missions), you were either gathering intel or killing key NPCs to get a better shot at the target. Also, the game not being as long as the later ones helped, it didn't overstay its welcome for me.
I had avoided AC 1 for years when a friend griped about the game's repetitiveness. In 2021 I finally decided to try it for myself. I found this feature so enjoyable, that to my surprise, I found myself getting more invested in this game's missions then the more tightly programed missions of the later games. The great writting helped of course.

When it released though it was very impressive. I disagree whenever people say if X was fun then, then it is fun now... that is oversimplifying the situation, and not taking into account that times, tastes, and technology all change, while the games don't. You're not likely to ever see a good game turn into a bad game with age, but they can become obsolete, such as atari/c64 era games. And a good game can certainly become mediocre in time simply due to an increase in quality alternatives that just do it better.

Games now are absolute garbage in comparison to AC1, it's a fricking masterpiece with NOT A CRINGEWORTHY STORY, which is impossible by modern days standards. It's not buggy, it has a fun little story, great music, great cities. Quests are weak, but the game? No, no i wouldn't say it's C tier at all. Back in the days it was maybe a bit dull(because of the quests and overall emotionlessness of the game), but was it bad? I enjoyed the story, and back then it did made me invested into all the assassin-themed stuff along with the age it was set in. Not A, but B would be a proper rank, i'd say.

If you have a PS5 you should just use that from here on out. Old AC games had really nasty performance issues that tied *directly* to gameplay in a way that most stutters don't. Long story short, less framerate = more bugs
You break blocks by timing consecutive hits as the previous hit lands. You'll know you did it right when you trigger a cinematic finisher. It's possible to occasionally get these by button mashing because this game's input sanitization is broken, but the only consistent way is to learn the rhythm. This can be done with both light and heavy attacks. Heavy attacks are more likely to accidentally kill weaker enemies before triggering the finisher, especially later on when you get more powerful weapons, losing you the opportunity to make another enemy cower and vulnerable to being assassinated instantly with the finisher, but they require less hits. Other ways to make enemies cower are stabbing a floored or unconscious enemy with the hidden blade, doing any of the four counter moves except counter knock down, and assassinating a cowering enemy, which is repeatable indefinitely. Most of this is covered (very poorly) in the optional training missions, but hidden blade and cowering behavior is never explained
Saving citizens also upgrades your health. If this game is too easy for you then you can sort of modify that by avoiding these encounters, but it still gives you quite a bit of health by the end
Every objective in the game (with the exception of some of the Director's Cut stuff with the informants that isn't implemented very well) can be found entirely without viewpoints or even HUD. Patrice Désilets has even gone on record to say this is the intended way to play the game. The Rafiq will tell you what part of the city to look in and what direction it is from the bureau. This also corresponds to the names of the districts on the map, and if you forget you can revisit him. The dialogue even reacts to repeat visits and gets pretty funny. From there, you have to use your ears. Walk the streets and listen for suspicious conversations or other unusual sounds. Look for major landmarks like buildings the Rafiq mentions and the relative cardinal directions. This isn't required, but if you're sick of the standard climbing towers and following waypoints formula, it can be a very immersive way to play. I like to keep my radar on so I can tell what direction I'm going, mark landmarks, and track annoying informant tasks, but still listen to the streets as my primary method of finding missions. It's also unique to AC1 since every subsequent game removed the vast majority of diegetic navigational aids
The hidden blade has a 100% chance of doing a counter kill, but it's incapable of special counter kills or special counter knockouts, which are performed by mashing attack or jump respectively during the counter with the sword or dagger
Alright, it's time to talk about investigations. After every task a piece of intel will be added to your memory log. You only have to complete two tasks to unlock the assassination, but then you'll only get two pieces of intel. The more investigations you do, the more prepared you are. These include detailed maps of the assassination area with potential routes, enemy placements, target behaviors, and entry and exit methods. This is how you conduct the second phase of the gameplay loop that you didn't do because the game didn't even *try* to explain this mechanic: Mission planning. This is most comparable to Hitman, but with less variety of potential approaches. Instead of walking you through the assassination step-by-step, it will give you all the tools you need to create your own plan. Sometimes it's even helpful to take external notes so you can combine the maps and orient them in the right direction. This mechanic would also never return to the series in any recognizable form
Reaching Garnier without being detected is really hard, but outside of three targets, you never have to fight anyone. I'd hesitate to describe AC1 as a stealth game first and foremost since there are relatively few tools available and the late game has a lot of consecutive forced combat encounters, but it is an option for prepared assassins. The scholars will get you part of the way, but when it comes to dealing with maniacs, one of the most frustrating obstacles in the game, you should see my friend's video Kinography - Assassin's Creed 1 Stealth Guide, Episode 4: Social Stealth Obstacles. He can explain better than me, and our comments are always open
You can push enemies too. They may be able to block frontal assassinations on high alert, but not when they're on the ground. It's a great way to save on valuable throwing knives when suddenly detected or with isolated enemies
Nice job figuring out the throw into scaffolding instant takedown. Like 70% of this game's mechanics, that's never explained
Alternatively, you can also assassinate one guard in front of a gate in view of the others, blend away, and walk behind when they come to investigate. Removal stealth, evasion stealth, combat, parkour - four approaches. This will become a running theme throughout the series
The movement in this game has three different buttons that do three different things. The game instructs you to press two of them at the same time and turn your brain off, which is a very good way to get flung off a wall when trying to climb using the jump button, for example. I can never promise this will be 100% free of jank, but I can direct you to Leo K [Rogue] - [Rogue Academy] Classic Assassin's Creed | Movement Guide so you can learn what all the inputs do before you get any more frustrated, because this system isn't going anywhere for a while
Instead of reducing your synchronization bar, the game will give you consecutive warnings for killing civilians in a short period of time until you instantly desynchronize
Lucy is curling her ring finger on her chest to create an illusion. You can see on her model normally she has all ten. This will preemptively solve what you may perceive as a continuity error with a minor retcon in the next game
This is the most important thing I will ever say to you, and I'll only say it once: The project you are about to undertake will be very difficult. You will find out just how fragmented this community is. You will overlook more important mechanics. You may be wondering how the hell you were supposed to figure any of this stuff out. You may be wondering if you even played the same game that I did. You may have some reservations about going into a game blind your first time, especially if you're planning to review it. I hope by now I've proven why that would be a mistake, because the tutorials don't get any better. It's very hard to critique these games without understanding how most of the mechanics work. Perhaps more importantly, it's very hard to *enjoy* these games without understanding how most of the mechanics work. We can help with that. We dedicate time to labbing them inside and out so you don't have to and spreading this information as best we can with our limited following, like you've hopefully seen a little bit of reading this so far. We're also passionate about stealth games in general if that's something that interests you, and tend to attract budding creators. This is not me telling you that you have to "get good" at Assassin's Creed in order to have good opinions. This is not the Soulsborne franchise. These games are *not* hard. I'm only saying that knowing what we do *radically* transforms your experience. For an example of what a similar review looks like *with* these resources available, see my friend's first segment TheButterAnvil - NO MORE LIES! This is a very thorough comment, my hat is off to you. While there are some things you said that I did know and just didn't specify, the majority of what you said was news to me. One thing I had a feeling might've been the case was about killing civilians. I vividly remember it only taking one chunk of the synchronization bar, and it being the future games that warn you not to do it too much. But I could definitely be misremembering, either way, the game was glitched when I tried to test it out and I couldn't get a solid answer.
I should bring up, however, that I don't really see these videos as super analytical deep-dives into each game where I deconstruct each aspect. These are more so fun journeys through each game where I give my feedback on the aspects that caught my eye (A Strand-Type review, if you will). I suppose I could've done a better job at framing it that way. When I said "talk about them in-depth", I quite literally meant just talking about them for a long time. I don't really want to bust my balls working on each video because I intend to work on other things in between, like new parts of my MGSV review. Especially because like you said, this will be a taxing project if I only focus on it. It's a certainty that by the time I get to Valhalla (IF I get to Valhalla), there will be multiple new entries.
I will say that I already have footage of 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations completely finished since last year. And a script partially made for 2. Those are games that I had played multiple times before this so I think I can give a more detailed depiction of what the games are like than I did here. But I appreciate the offer and will keep you in mind if I have any questions in the future. My socials are linked in the description of this video if you want to reach out to me and give me the means to contact you.

Just one tip: I highly recommend that you at least *try* to play these games as *stealth games first.* Maybe try to get some of the 100% sync objectives that often require you to not be detected or to kill a target in a specific cool way. The stealth gameplay is definitely there if you don't avoid it.

Interestingly enough its clear that the Devs realized the small minigames you do to get info on targets was dull (I kinda liked them because several of them gave you ways to reach the target easier) and in the manual for AC2, which is written in universe, they mention they removed them when they updated the program.

The setting was really something that this game absolutely nailed in every way that most subsequent games couldn't recreate. If only the Animus Database was in the game to give more context to the cities and landmarks seen in game. Damascus was a super underrated setting you never see games in Syria. The Umayyad Mosque looked amazing and it's so sad that it's bombed out nowadays. Fun fact, the viewpoint in that mosque was a real Seljuk Minaret installed in the 11th century. It very much was real and looked exactly like it did in the game. Unfortunately it was hit with explosions and collapsed in like 2017. This game is quite literally the best look at such a site anyone will be able to have until it ever gets refurbished. So sad but really cool in a way.

One tiny thing I wanted to point out, because I also suffered from this during my first few playthroughs. The game does have cinematic cutscenes. When you see those shiny glitches appear you can press any button and it will switch to the cinematic cutscene instead of showing the events using the regular fixed camera. I suppose this was their ways to engage the players and make the cutscenes more engaging, so you wouldn't zone out during the story segments. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1 & 2 are my personal favourites in the series. Frankly speaking, the technical achievements greatly eclipsed any gameplay innovation, it should be noted that this is a quick and "easy" method of garnering mass appeal. It is a common occurrence in gaming, think of console cycles and launch titles, as the industry has evolved (devolved, IMO) the improvements witnessed in such offerings have been iterative rather than revolutionary - hence the prevalence of Sports and Racing titles which can immediately impress with graphical improvement over their respective prequels. As for the development of AC, it's certainly deviated from the original formula (whilst continuing to cater to the casual audience, that's not meant as a pejorative btw) but that is the common effect of sequelitis, as a creator you're "damned if you do, damned if you don't", so the devs shouldn't be criticised wholesale IMO.

    - You can skip the dialogue of the saved civilians by jumping towards them, locking on mid-air and bumping into them with the jump.

Excellent video, subscribed and looking forward for more.
Back in the day, I bought it thinking it was a Hitman spin-off set during the Crusades - boy was I wrong.
And yet, with all its apparent flaws, AC1 had something that no other game in the series has been able to match. I can't quite put the finger on it, maybe it as the eerie, unnerving, tense, anxious atmosphere, like you were watching something that you weren't supposed to see, well complimented by the equally weird soundtrack. Or maybe it was the pseudo-philosophical stuff about freedom, religion and so on.
I don't know precisely what it was, but to this day AC1 has a special place in my heart. AC2 and Brotherhood were much better games, but they were already more mainstream experiences.
As for the overarching plot, AC1 (with 2 and Brotherhood) was full of what you might call JJ Adam's mystery boxes - interesting story leads that clearly the developers had no idea where they were going and probably would've been better left to players' imagination. Instead they came up with the most boring apocalytic plot ever.

It has a atmosphere unlike any other game in the franchise and the missions may be repetitive but Ubisoft had the right idea having the player do there own investigations on there target and having the freedom to choose how to strike is really cool and it’s what being an Assassin is all about. I am a big fan of this franchise and I often see this game misunderstood. First of all this game came out in 2007, so at that point, the parkour, the NPCs and crowds being a dynamic obstacle you had to overcome, the open world structure, in a time where every stealth game put you in a level, whereas in this case the level was the entire city, was already enough to wow people. But to this day I think this is the best AC game out there, and one of my favourite game of all time. See AC1 can be very much fun, if you understand how to play it. I first played this game with HUD on, I would go to the investigation missions, be done in 5 min and then start the assassination, go in not really understanding what to do, and because this game does not have checkpoints and its not forgiving, I would often end up messing up and relying on combat, which was as you stated easy and to me kinda basic(again 2007). So I finished the game under 8 hours and the only thing that impressed me was the world and the story. Now I play this game again, however now I play it the way it was always meant to be played-without the HUD. See the open world is so well made, for you to explore it, learn the landmarks visually, and as you explore chances are you will stumble upon an Investigation mission, which is the best thing about this game, actively thinking and searching for these investigations(btw those talks in the assassins bureau are tips for finding them). During the middle of the game I got really good, my chances of finding an investigation opportunity was higher when i roamed the streets rather than the rooftops, making the social stealth very useful, however it can feel like a labyrinth so i would also use parkour to scour from high up. The investigations usually take place around landmarks, open places with a lot of people in it. It started to become easy, but not because I knew where to go cuz the map told me, but because I actively was thinking for it and when I did find it, the serotonin levels in my monkey brain would go crazy. After you do this you will have information about your target, which you should use checking the memory log on the menu(which i didnt know in my first playthrough), in order to plan your assassination, which is the next great part of AC1. Often times I would go to these places on the map, check them out before the assassination even happened, just to ensure I had all the details down. They also help you with the next stage, the escape. I would know what route to take, what guards I needed to eliminate on that route before hand, for example the Tamir assassination is very easy, because its early game however the escape can be very hard when you start out, and knowing that there are platforms above the plaza makes sure that you will take them and funny enough they lead you right into a hiding place (convenient huh). The Design on this game is ingenious. I went from a player going from
A to B, completing X mission for the sake of the game requiring it, going all out on combat, sloppy, not knowing where I was going, with very long escape session which were frankly annoying at times, to a true Assassin looking out for these intel gathering mission, being logical about it, planning my approach, executing it and by the end, I felt really engaged and rewarded it was so great I would play the same assassination over and over again with different plans, just to see how well would this game provide me with options and it did. This game has its problems no doubt, but the design on this game is one that has never been matched, perhaps grazed a bit from the Hitman series and Shadow of Mordor, but never matched. I hope you give this game another try someday, without the HUD so you may experience this gem the way it was meant to be played. Loved this video as it gave me much to think about. Hope you will read the entire comment lol. RIP your time if you did

good agreeable video. i have pretty much all the same thoughts on the game except for one thing.
i can’t really blame anyone for not liking the parkour since it’s never properly tutorialized but it’s much much better than people give it credit for. if you look up how to do it you realize that it’s super smooth and quick. altair climbs slow, yeah, but did you ever think that might be because the game wants you to use all the advanced parkour techniques (that it, again, unfortunately doesn’t properly teach you) to scale the buildings in a more horizontal manner than just directly climbing up linearly? wall runs to side ejects to wall runs to back ejects and shit. when the subsequent games heavily nerf, remove, and simplify what you can do, it may end up being a smoother experience for the people who were bad at the original system because there isn’t any opportunity to accidentally fuck up the admittedly sensitive controls of the first few games, but it becomes really sterile and shitty. there’s a looot of freedom in 1 and the ezio trilogy’s parkour and i hope you explore it better in your videos for the ezio games. it’s far from perfect but it’s actually a system with some modicum of depth, miles ahead of the other two systems these games use (stealth and combat).

Tbh I’m 20 minutes in and i need to sleep but you clearly didn’t use the gameplay to your advantage. There’s so much you can do with the parkour to get around and there’s stuff the game doesn’t tell you about which may be a negative on the way you look at it. The combat isn’t bad it’s actually perfect for what it is supposed to be and you unlock more mechanics as the game goes on and is fun if you know how to use the mechanics to your advantage. You also didn’t use social stealth to help you avoid using combat as the combat is meant to be a last resort hence it being perfect for what it is.

Thats not even mentioning the brutality of the cutscenes which you didnt really see much of at that time.
