  • The Kaye E Barker is a busy Great Lakes Freighter, there's no time to stop! The Ojibway supply ship based out of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan doesn't mind pulling up alongside ships to supply them with a few pallets such as food, spare parts, and equipment. I caught this happening (by accident mind you) on June 18, 2024. I'd seen the Ojibway once before (with the Presque Isle) and was curious, so I've kept an eye out for it since I looked it up.
*I appreciate your previous feedback - this is a re-upload where I've fixed my audio issues. Sorry about that! I used my better mic, found a version of the song with no lyrics, and dropped the music volume. Rookie mistake - thanks for tuning back in!*
For this shoot I was flying my Mavic 3 Classic, and the background music is Carry Us Home by HARBRS (licensed through Audiio). As with all my videos, this was edited in DaVinci Resolve.

I saw the 'Jib service the Stewart J. Cort when my family drove to the Upper Peninsula in 1973.

You've got a great memory! I believe she would have been owned by US Steel at that time, but still doing the same job

There is the Kaye E. Barker, and there is the James R. Barker.
There is the Lee A. Tregurtha, and there is the Paul R. Tregurtha.
All 4 work for the Interlake Steamship Company.

Lots of ships are named after their owners and spouses. In a way it's nice that all these ships are part of a family. I've yet to catch that iconic Barker bark from the James R. Barker or see the Lee A. Tregurtha - they come through my area regularly but getting the weather and our schedules to line up has been difficult so far. Hopefully soon!

I used to fuel those big boys and Coast Guard vessels. Usually 30,000 gallons minimum

Dang, that's a lot of diesel! Does that mean you saw pretty much every freighter on the lakes, or did different shipping companies each have their own separate suppliers?

I see that ship come into Grand Haven several times

I'm kinda surprised (but very thankful) they don't just do the same route over and over. Makes it lots easier to see a good variety of ships!

The first time I saw it I had no idea what was happening until I got home (tiny screen on the drone's controller). This was the second time and fortunately I knew what to expect. Andrea actually got on the Ojibway and offers a really cool perspective in her video: ua-cam.com/video/vgJDPMhbUDU/v-deo.htmlsi=et5GQLHR_kO3Ognf

@@NorthernElevations We were camping at the Soo Locks Campground and watched the Ojibwe offloading and a circle of deck mates near groups of boxes and carrying them into the ship. Day later on the boat tour they explained it all. Interesting info.

Nice video, but you left out that she was Benson Ford No. 3 in the mid 80s for Fords fleet. She was featured in a special called Iron Boats Iron Men as Benson

That's a neat fact! With these ships well out lasting folks careers it makes sense that they'd have multiple names over their lifespans. Somehow I missed it's middle name 😔

      @@NorthernElevations
I think she was only Benson Ford from like 85 to 89, depending on whenever the timline is that Ford sold the original William Clay and bought what is now the Lee A. Tregurtha

Do you not like the song, or just don't like background music in videos? I feel like background music helps keep a video flowing for the style of videos I enjoy creating. If you like ships with more commentary and no background music, Andrea is extremely knowledgeable and knows more than I could ever hope to know about these ships.
