Northern Ontario Fall Colours - Algoma district 2024
Beautiful fall colours are on full display in Sault Ste Marie! This drone video takes you to Chippewa Falls, Pike's Peek (overlooking the West end of Sault Ste Marie), and the Searchmount train bridge as well as along Highway 17 (the Trans Canada highway).
See the reds, yellows, and greens of the trees from the skies with my DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone, supplemented with my DJI Osmo Action 4 camera I had mounted to my car for the road shots. Footage was taken October 16, 2024.
Chippewa Falls doesn't have a lot of water falling, but the trees sure are falling properly with their colours! I took some video of the falls themselves, the lower falls (I really liked the way the sun caught these trees facing North), and a couple shots of the upper falls. It also marks the halfway point of the Trans-Canada highway!
Pike's Peak is part of the Wattswood Park Ski Trail system. It's a bit too early for skiing, but it's about a 10 minute hike on foot and you get some beautiful views of the West end of Sault Ste Marie. You can see Algoma Steel in the distance with their smokestacks.
Searchmount Train Bridge is somewhere I've driven by a few times, but never stopped to fly around until now. I was hoping to catch the Agawa Canyon Tour train as they went by, but unfortunately their season ended just a couple days before I made it out. Oh well, there's always next year!

Fall Island Colours in Northern Ontario, 2024
Переглядів 50514 днів тому
St Joseph Island has naturally beautiful fall colours. In this cinematic video, I used my drone to capture different locations around the Northern half of the Island (one of these trips I'll make it down to Whiskey Bay!). There's plenty of footage of driving through trees turning colours, and when I got to Sailors Encampment I was surprised to find the SS Alpena, the oldest active freighter on ...
Fall 2024 Boat Nerds Tour - in and around the Soo Locks!
Переглядів 17121 день тому
The Original Soo Locks Boat Tours hosted the Boat Nerds Fall 2024 tour on October 4, 2024. This special cruise was a blast, thanks to the Interlake Steamship Company! So many Boat Nerds were onboard, and I was lucky enough to join them. The drone clips (first 2 shots and the last one) were taken previously - all other shots were from onboard the Holiday tour boat as we locked through, saw the S...
One of CSL's older ships with a bulky bow

Canada Steamship Lines has a long and storied past - but a lot of their fleet is pretty new. I caught up with the Atlantic Huron - a vessel built in 1984 still hauling cargo on the Great Lakes and St Lawrence. The Atlantic Huron has a unique looking bow section with its sharp angles, very different to other Great Lakes freighters and even unsimilar with salties. The CSL Atlantic Huron is mostly...
Early Fall Colors 2024 in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario

Check out this nature drone footage: featuring fall colours! Parks are saying the fall colors are 30% changed, so its still early but the weather was nice and I was off work so I got the drone up in the air and put this little video together. I'm hoping to make it out next week as well, but enjoy this little teaser! Shots were taken along Higway 17, just North of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canad...

The story of Lee A Tregurtha: an 82 year old ship on the Great Lakes

The Lee A. Tregurtha might be the most interesting Great Lakes freighter! Starting out in 1942 as a wartime oil tanker, she saw Japan surrender World War 2, and sailed the world before being converted in to a bulk freighter. She's been sailing for 82 years, and now steadily hauls bulk cargo (such as taconite, iron ore, wheat and salt. A few facts that didn't make it into the video: - She was ti...

Canada Steamship Line (CSL)'s Thunder Bay vessel is a modern Great Lakes freighter. As a Trillium class vessel launched in 2013, she carries a number of new technologies and designs to make her safer, more economical, and more environmentally friendly than older ships. Named after the Ontario city of Thunder Bay, this vessel can carry nearly 25,000 gross tones of cargo combined in its 5 cargo h...
Great Lakes Footer: Burns Harbor
Переглядів 1152 місяці тому
Burns Harbor is one of the great Great Lakes freighter footers (say that ten times fast!) - there are only 13 ships 1000ft long, and this is one of them! originally built in 1980 for Bethlehem Steel, named after one of their steel mills in (you guessed it) Burns Harbor. American Steamship Company acquired her in 2005 and kept the same name. She sailed through the St Mary's River on July 29, 202...
Edwin H Gott Great Lakes Freighter

The 1004ft long Edwin H Gott is a staple Great Lakes Freighter, seen here just downstream of the Soo Locks. Gott is in a 3-way tie for second longest freighter on the Lakes! I've had a crazy busy July, I'm hoping to keep a more steady upload schedule starting in September!

Here's an articulated tug-barge (ATB) downbound on the St Mary's River towards Lake Huron. I flew around it with my DJI Avata 2, and figured I'd share with you what I saw! Articulated Tug Barges are an interesting vessel type consisting of two independent vessels. The tug always rests at a certain level in the water, however when the barge is loaded and unloaded its level will rise or fall, add...
One of the last Great Lakes Steamers - Wilfred Sykes
Переглядів 1334 місяці тому
Wilfred Sykes is a classic Great Lakes freighter, and she passed through the Soo Locks again! It's pretty rare for her to see Lake Superior so this is kind of a big deal. She's slotted to make her way back down from Marquette right on Engineer's Day which is also kind of a big deal! Wilfred Sykes is a steam powered bulk freighter built in 1949. It was the longest ship on the lakes until 1952, e...

Re-supplying Kaye E Barker while underway downbound from Soo Locks!
Переглядів 7 тис.4 місяці тому
The Kaye E Barker is a busy Great Lakes Freighter, there's no time to stop! The Ojibway supply ship based out of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan doesn't mind pulling up alongside ships to supply them with a few pallets such as food, spare parts, and equipment. I caught this happening (by accident mind you) on June 18, 2024. I'd seen the Ojibway once before (with the Presque Isle) and was curious, so ...

Awesome video and the breathtaking scenery !
Thanks! It’s certainly lucky having a scenic island like this nearby. I’ve been back a few times since - I was maybe a week early for peak fall colours this year on St Joe’s. I’m hoping to make it back in the winter although I’m not sure how well the roads will be plowed in the offseason
Beautiful!!! Loved it!!❤
Thanks! It’s really a beautiful area, I’m very glad to finally be exploring it after living here nearly a decade
WOW! This is one the most beautiful and interesting fall colours videos I have ever seen. A great variety of places and trees! And your creative work with transitions and video speed match so well with the music. I was totally captivated. Really loved the speed transition at 2:34 with the train tracks. Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks, means a lot! That’s my favourite shot in the video too, the sun was hitting the trees just perfect 😊
Spectacular pops of colour for sure!! Awesome!!
Thanks! I was really looking forwards to this one - I could work on my timing a bit better but it’s tough when there are a lot of windy days. Still really liked getting out there to different spots!
Some great shots, loved the one along the train trestle.
I was hoping to catch the Agawa Canyon Tour train on it, but their season ended just a couple days before I was out flying. There’s always next year!
I'm seeking my Canadian Citizenship. 3 generations born on the Island. Granddaughter of my Pearl wigmore Krodel. Canadian legislation applies now to second generation born outside Canada. If I get it I will kiss the ground when I get there. US citizen born My country is goi g to he'll. Very scary..
Hope all goes well - nowhere is perfect, but the Island seems like a great spot to get away from it all!
Love the boat nerds tour!
There’s a few companies that do tours - this “Boat Berds” tour was a special twice-a-year thing open to everyone, but also had a few creatures (much more dedicated than myself) in the community onboard. The regular tour has more information on the area like the locks, some sights along the St Mary’s River, history etc…while this tour was all about hunting down as many ships as possible in the area
@@NorthernElevationsI’ll definitely do one of those tours if I’m in the area. Thanks!
Gorgeous drone video and fall colours - very creatively put together, too. Loved it!
Thanks! Shooting the ships has been fun and convenient, but in videos like this there’s more room for me to try different drone movements and stuff in the editing too
Nice video would have loved to see the South side of the island whisky Bay area. 😁
I do have a couple pins on my map down there for next time - Whisky Bay and Beech Beach! The Fort could be interesting too, but wouldn’t be able to fly a drone there (Parks Canada doesn’t allow drones except in certain pre-approval scenarios). I didn’t really see any other spots to go where 1. There’s a decent takeoff/landing area, and 2. Wouldn’t have a ton of people’s houses/camps in the footage (for privacy reasons). If you know of any I’d love to add them to my map of future places to go!
Nice job capturing the colours and atmosphere of the place. I was there a couple years ago, and other than not easily being able to find an open restaurant, the island was a pleasure to explore.
Thanks, means a lot! Every trip I do there I’m reminded how calm it is - taking the drone up I can pretty much hear it faintly the whole time it’s in the air. All the road shots were done with the DJI Osmo Action 4 on a suction cup mount on my car hood - another example of some pretty good looking footage from the robust little camera!
My favorite place, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, it sure is a beautiful island!
Now there's a place with some pretty spectacular colours!!
This was my third time back to St Joe’s - it’s such a beautiful spot in any season. In the past week since I was out there I’ve seen a few posts from locals and the colours have bloomed even more!
Thanks for the tour, loved seeing the ships. 👍
It was pretty neat! There was a salty heading the other way while we were in the locks, and we locked through with a local tugboat too. It’s pretty cool to see the ships with a drone, but it’s another thing to be right up close with them!
Excellent!
Really glad you liked it, thanks!
I love those opening bow shots. 👌 Great footage as usual.👍
Thanks, practise makes better. Editing that cuts out all the blips really helps too!
It's mounted forward, not aft.
Thanks for the correction, I’m still very much learning all the proper terminology. I’ll make note of that in the future!
Look at all those beautiful colours coming through!! Awesome!!
Just peeking through so far, hopefully the weather is nice next week when I’m off work!
The colours there will be spectacular in a week or so. Beautiful country.
I’m very much looking forward to it!
Reports say only 30% of the leaves have started turning colours, I’m hoping to get out again next week to see them on full display 🤞
Awesome footage again, and I'm really enjoying your commentary on the history of the ships. Keep up the great work.👌👍
Thank you! I’m hoping to catch some fall colours for the next one if the weather cooperates on my days off…
Good vid and drone footage. Does she have a self unloader?
Thanks! This vessel does not have a self unloader - she relies on unloading equipment such as grain elevators as seen at the end of this video on CSL's official channel ua-cam.com/video/KV_1IuLHvWw/v-deo.htmlsi=KQccyPaj_6IqQU3Q
Its a long shot - but if anyone knows that sailor taking a picture of my drone at 1:50 I'd love to see their perspective!
Now that mural is really quite striking!! That would be quite something to see take-off as a "thing" for many ships!! Awesome!!
They did do one more mural "the runners" a couple years ago - it's still got time to catch on!
Another great video with some excellent historical and cultural context. 👍👍
Thanks! It's sorta neat the whole shipping culture - surprisingly big in Facebook communities. Tons to learn and share!
Many viewing this video wouldn't know how drastically her appearance was changed from USS CHIWAWA to a Great Lakes freighter. The midsection and pilot house are most obvious. You mentioned the convoy she was in being attacked by a German U-boat. Did you know (from "King of the Oilers," by Jon Strupp, son of a crew member) that two torpedoes went UNDER her? The twin "plumes" coming from her stacks are from her scrubber system, which cleans the exhaust from pollution particles before releasing it into the atmosphere.
I had no idea about the torpedos going under her, that's an impressively powerful detail! I work in an industrial setting with boilers and steam equipment, and have a theoretical awareness about scrubbers. It's kind of insane to think of replacing boilers with a diesel engine - the plant I work at was constructed in the 1940's era as well (albeit on land). Our boilers are tightly integrated with their auxiliary equipment, and if it was same on this ship would have been a crazy undertaking.
Add to that removal of asbestos, accepted as safe in the past. In fact, as an elementary school student, I was awed that, by wearing asbestos suits, our firefighters would be safe from the flames.
Fantastic. I had no idea she had been ocean going in her first configuration. Excellent video
Thanks, really appreciate it! It's crazy how many modifications a ship can have cutting sections apart, and welding new additions and all that. It's kept her afloat all these years!
Absolutely honorable the ship wears her military decorations. Incredible history!
It's amazing the history of some of these ships - and they don't get more historic than the Mini Tregurtha!
My 6-year-old twins and I love your videos! This one was excellent! Thank you!
Very glad to hear it, thanks for watching ☺️
Love the music in this one, very cinematic!
Thanks! I swear finding music is one of the hardest parts of putting videos like this together. Nothing really feels 'right' until you've started working with it
Great job on the narration, you're a natural. Interesting history about its wartime service. Your videos are very enjoyable to watch. 👍👍
Thanks for always tuning in! I'm still working on making it feel a bit more natural, but I suppose that comes with time
Gross tonnage(GT) or gross registered tonnage(GRT) is actually a measure of volume of internal cargo carrying space. Dead weight tonnage(DWT) is the amount of weight it can carry in cargo, fuel, crew, provisions, etc. Which in this case is listed in Wikipedia as 37,690. Just about every one gets that wrong. Including a lot of people who should know better. Although the way you worded it in your verbal and written description, you were not wrong technically, so I will give you credit for that. LOL. Then there is "Displacement" which is the actual amount of weight of water the ship displaces at any given time, which can vary greatly whether it is empty or full of cargo. On large passenger ships or large warships that generally don't carry cargo you might hear the phrase "Full load displacement" which is pretty much self explanatory. So congratulations! you are now among the 1% that know and can use the correct nautical terminology.
Really appreciate you taking the time to dumb this down for us landlubbers! When referencing cargo capacity I've mostly seen the gross tonnage mentioned, so I've just blindly followed suit in the past. Sounds like GT only describes the designed cargo capacity, while DWT more describes how much total weight the ship can carry - so if carrying dense cargo like iron ore you'd likely be more concerned about the weight (DWT) than the GT - if you're full on fuel and provisions you might not be able to fill the cargo hatches to the top?
@@NorthernElevations Yes, you have the right idea. When loading a heavy cargo like iron ore they will load until the ship sinks down low enough in the water to reach the "Plimsoll marks"(another nautical term) painted on the outside of the hull. That indicates a full load. A full load of raw iron ore or taconite pellets might only fill half of the cargo holds, and the ship will be riding as low in the water as safety permits. Then with a lightweight cargo like grain you will load up right to the top with the holds completely full, and the ship will still not be riding very deep in the water and could take more weight but there is no more space. That is sometimes called "cubing out", referring to cubic space. Gross tonnage or Registered gross tonnage is often used to determine port and dockage fees, or things like ship classification and legal matters.
Great narration, love it! I had never heard the term lock rash before, so you've taught me something new. I'm really enjoying your ship videos. Keep up the great work. 👍
Appreciate it! I've heard the term lock rash only a few times, but couldn't find it online so figured I'd do my part to help make it a thing 😁
Nice flying! You had some great views of the ship. I hadn't heard of this particular one before, now I know. Thanks.
Thanks! She was named after Bethlehem Steel's plant at Burns Harbor, Indiana. I've caught 30 ships with my drones so far, neat to see all the different names of owners, captains, ports, and other locations the ships are named after!
So cool!
We're kind of spoiled here to have beasts like this just a few minutes drive away 🥰
The Gott is the Most powerful freighter on the lakes, at 19,300HP
She's certainly GOTT the power! I just did a bit of digging and it appears that she was originally built with 19,500HP but in an engine retrofit in 2010-11 the new diesel dropped down to it's current 19,300HP - still the most powerful by a decent margin
@@NorthernElevations yes she Had Enterprise Diesels, and was repowered with a pair of MaK/Caterpillar Diesels, she barely eeks out the HP king over her Fleetmate Edgar B Speer, she has a pair of Pielsticks with a combined HP of 19,260
Not quite as nice as the older Arthur M Anderson in my opinion, but still a good looking ship!
There's something about the old front wheelhouse, pointed bow, and raised stern that makes those classic ships feel iconic. I think the footers are impressive in their own right, but you can tell they were designed to maximize cargo at the expense of showing much character
I love those bow shots! Great views all around. 👍
Gotta make sure to always get at least one! Getting that close to the ships and seeing how they dwarf everything around them especially at that angle certainly puts my tiny drone in its place 😂
You balance out your voiceovers and uninterrupted drone footage really well
Glad it comes across that way - I still find it very weird hearing my voice through my computer 😅
Looks like a beautiful day for filming!
Almost as nice as that St Joe's Island video I did - those clouds were something else hah
Get this man on National Geographic

Loving the new logo 🎉
Thanks! Figured it was about time
I'm really enjoying your videos more now that you're incuding information through your narrative. I liked the info you shared about the drone as well. 👍
Thanks, means a lot coming from you 🥰 I've been thinking about doing a video on how I make videos - planning, flying, and editing and seeing how that goes...this video was testing the waters a bit on that
Thanks. I would enjoy watching a video like that. I've also thought about making one myself but haven't followed through yet. @@NorthernElevations

Absolutely amazing views of the ship. Happy weekend. The journey continues, Friend... greetings Moode 👣 ☀
Thanks! Yeah it is really cool what you can see from an elevated angle. There are no secrets in the sky!
Getting really up close and personal on this one...fantastic!!
The Avata is the perfect drone for up-close shots! Other drones can feel 'loose' or 'floaty', but the Avatar's control is extremely responsive. It also helps that it's screen is a set of goggles on your face - so you also get a better perspective of depth perception
Questions about ATB's. Why don't we see more of them on the Lakes? Why do Laker ATB's have bow thrusters while harbor ATB's ("Tim B at Sea") don't?
I wish I could answer your questions - I'm not very well versed with them yet. I'm hoping to do a deep dive eventually and hopefully I'll have answers then!
❤
Thanks for stopping by!
@@NorthernElevations my pleasure
I had no idea some of these freighters are even older than I am...amazing!!
It's amazing! Ships in the oceans rarely make it to 20 years, but because the great lakes are fresh water they can last way longer if they're well maintained
Lose the damn music,jeez.
Do you not like the song, or just don't like background music in videos? I feel like background music helps keep a video flowing for the style of videos I enjoy creating. If you like ships with more commentary and no background music, Andrea is extremely knowledgeable and knows more than I could ever hope to know about these ships. Here's her channel: youtube.com/@dredesignsglmp?si=RkjdHlgzcn30eFCY
Beautiful footage, and a real thrill to see all those vessels together! Thanks!! On the other hand, that soundtrack - really? I could have just turned my sound off, but kept hoping there’d be some meaningful narration. Alas. I really did enjoy the vid. May watch it again with the sound off.
Really appreciate the feedback! I liked the pacing of the song...but looking back at it the lyrics do very much distract from the video. I've started doing more narration in the past couple of weeks - it just makes sense to add relevant information to the visuals. Thanks for checking out my channel!
