I have been singing in choirs for almost 60 years. This piece is my favorite. It always brings me to tears. The sopranos soar, the tenors complete it, the bass line sustains, but the altos are beyond sublime. Thank you Eliza, thank you.
Ooh... Mother mary, full or grace, awaken, All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken, Taken by the sea, Mother mary calm our fears, have mercy, Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy, Hear our mournful plea, Our world has been shaken, We wander our homelands forsaken, In the dark night of the soul bring some comfort to us all, O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace, That our sorrows may be faced, Mary fill the glass to overflowing, Illuminate the path where we are going, Have mercy on us all, In funeral fires burning, Each flame to your mystery returning, In the dark night of the soul your shattered dreamers, Make them whole, O mother mary find us where we've fallen out of grace, Lead us to a higher place, In the dark night of the soul our broken hearts you can make whole, O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace, Let us see your gentle face, Mary. Ooh.
Oh my goodness tthis is one of the most s beautiful and heartfelt and emotionally profound pieces of choral music that I have listened to, and I am moved to tears
Which note are you talking about? I mean, there are a lot of strongs F2 but it's not that low (it's impressive because it's very well projected, but it's not that low). Did I miss a low C or something like that?
It's not especially log, but his projection is beautiful. When I performed this piece, I hope that we Bass 2's carried our part with this much clarity.
It’s Andrew Miller (the one who posted the video) he is right in the middle of the choir. He was our artistic director. Source: I am a tenor in this video with glasses and sorta spiky hair.
Our church choir sang this piece during worship this morning. When we first rehearsed it, I was in tears. Today, many in the congregation came up to us after and told us how beautiful and moving it was. Incredible piece. Powerful. Haunting. The ebb and flow of the music so beautifully makes one think of the waves, gently rolling once the tsunami subsided.
Performing this piece for my University Choir this weekend, and no pieces, except for Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral for band, have ever made me break into tears in the middle of a run-through like this one. Truly beautiful, as simple as it really is.
I sang this in college with the University Choir, and this was not that long after Katrina. After we finished singing it, I don't believe there was a single dry eye in the audience.
I'm singing this in choir for the second time. The first time I sang this song I was in 7th grade. I am now in 11th grade (Junior Year) and the words and sound of the song still gives me chills. I love this song and can't wait to sing it with my choir of around 100 students.
Im in eighth grade and I'm learning this song for a performance. Definitely my favorite song this year. Cant wait to sing it at a casmec performance with my 128 member choir.
Is it possible that these composers knew that our “hearts” needed this. I feel a deep sense of longing when I hear these pieces. Lewis states that the greatest proof for eternity is that we are aware of it. This song seems to prove this point.
I sang this my senior year of high school with my concert choir. This song will have a very special place in my heart as a fellow classmate passed away that year and we sang this song at his funeral. Brings me to tears still four years later.
A song that is religous,a song that has perfect tune,a song that is for sadness,a song that gives chills,is this song,a song so beautiful that it makes me want to cry, gives me shivers, and has me wanting to sing it again and again, for choir or for church, this song is beautiful
It does sound beautifully haunting. I heard my college's rendition of this piece and I cried. It gave me the feeling of what the victims must have felt, during and after the tsunami.
We’re doing this piece for our last concert of the year. Listening to it for the first time with the rest of the class was so moving, I almost shed a single tear because of how beautiful this piece is, how deep the lyrics are, and the emotion just hit really hard. Overall, super excited to sing this piece!
This song is beautiful because it is not only somewhat literal at times but also spiritual and meditative. This song could be sung almost anywhere, and that is the mark of a truly amazing piece.
Sang this song last year with my schools choir and it was one of my favorite songs we've ever sang. Listening to it now after the loss of one of my greatest friends from that choir, it's really getting to me. Such a beautiful piece. RIP Eden
Hello Rachel, I was looking this song up for that reason! It's so beautiful. I've sung this piece before, but to sing it again (I hope soon) I can't help but to think of what's going on in the world right now, you're so right. We need music like this. Hope your students enjoy this piece and that they can share this with others by singing it. Hope you are ok after the storm.
I love playing this every chance I get! Not only is it absolutely beautiful, but it also reminds me of our dear deceased friend, David Crowley, since he was the one who shot and made this short video. Of course, this venue was a fantastic place to hear you in concert,
Thank you, Donna. Thank you for being a part of this magic moment. Every single element of this video is full of amazing energy. The music, every phrase of the piano, so moving! The choir’s voices, their faces, their connection and musicianship and the video. A magic moment.✨ So thank you to your late friend who filmed it. I can only image how it was to be a part of this moment in life. I just discovered this video, but I will come here often. Thank you!❤
This song....this song....words will never be enough to express the deep meaning of this song has for me. Thank you. You used your heavenly voices to express what my heart wishes it could say. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
my high school choir sang this on an alumni trip in europe this past summer... I remember when we sang this in L'Eglise Saint-Severin in Paris, a woman in the front row was sobbing by the end. most touching moment of my life. i'll never ever forget it
This is such a beautiful piece our show choir is doing this song which is 7- 11 graders as of now and this is the most amazing choir I've heard sing it! Goosebumps throughout!!!!
A most gorgeous rendition of this beautiful song. One of the best, if not the best I've heard. We sing this in our choir, The St Edward's University Masterworks Singers from Austin, Tx where we're very proud of Eliza Gilkyson and Craig Hella Johnson, both Austinites. Bravo!!! :)
This is the most incredible version of the song that I have heard. I can't stop coming back to it. I sang this three years ago and it touched my heart so greatly...it brought tears to my eyes then, but this version brings so much more to me. Thank you. Thank you so much for this.
Heard this performed at a UTEP Student Choral performance in honor of the all of recent Hurricane victims and those who lost their lives in Las Vegas. A compelling performance of a gorgeous song.
I'm going to study with my chorus in Turin this beautiful and amazing song.....and we like it much ...it's sweet ....touching and Eliza Gilkyson is great !!! I like your performance..♫♫.Greetings from Italy ♫♫
I sang this song back in December 2008 when my choir deparments' mother and son were both killed in a botched home burglary. Since that day i always love to hear this song and I love making arrangements of this song!! :)
I absolutely LOVE your performance of this song and am so happy to see it here on UA-cam! --In addition, I was in attendance at this particular event and I thought it was probably the very best of the From Age to Age concerts that I have attended. I would love to have a CD or DVD of this performance and I very much look forward to hearing this group again in the Bascilical.
I’m singing this in choir this year in my high school, and I feel like I might cry as I’m singing honestly. I am a tenor right now, I’m also in 10th grade (Sophomore Year) in high school. But R.I.P to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami victims 😔😢😭
Since I performed this with my choir a few years ago, I have desperately tried to find a youtube video of this song that I feel reflects the song not only with wonderful musicianship, blend, and timing but also with the beautiful passion the song so deserves.Stunning. Breathtaking. Perfect. Makes me wish I was there to see it live or even standing beside you all.
Your welcome. Keep singing, it's gorgeous. Props to you for not changing the lyrics like so many others have done with this inspired piece of music. Ms Gilkyson is very gracious to allow it but really it is a plea invoking the Feminine, the Mother of us all, Mother Mary was who she chose and she is not a "religious" person.
My daughter's chorus performed this last night. Her choral director claimed that the references to Mother Mary aren't religious references. Not only did the piece have me in tears, but the fact that there was a little speech beforehand to explain away the religious overtones of the poem/song saddened me.
I love this piece and will be singing it with the university choir for a candlelight service. I believe that the director might have been explaining that since a lot of people might find the religious reference to be offensive. I guess kind of like the reason why people have to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" at supermarkets. I don't, however, understand why people would find the content offensive. I am not a very religious person, but I can still appreciate how beautiful and meaningful the piece is.
+Suzanne Charpentier The good intentions behind the lyrics speaks for themselves. I'm not catholic, but i don't need anything explained away, it's a beautiful song, and the intentions are good. That's all that matters! I think the Choir director should just had done his job waving those hands instead of talking ;) !
This is the first time I've ever heard of this ensemble and watched your performance on UA-cam. The music is so profound and your singing is so beautiful that I nearly cried. Thank you for uploading this. By the way, my ensemble, the Formosa Singers, is visiting the States this July. I hope to buy some of your CDs then because it's probably hard to get any in Taiwan.... Please tell me where/how I can find your CDs. Thanks again. Love and regards from Taiwan.
+Suzanne Charpentier I'm sure the choral director didn't say that out of personal opinion. If they are teaching in a public school (which I am assuming) it is necessary to explain away the religiousness of a piece because it is taboo to even speak about religion in public schools. It makes it especially hard for choral directors as chorus' are around today thanks to the church.

Altos rule. 😊

@@DMLand LOL
Me: I’m reading this and laughing at the comments below it..
Also 😭 it’s my goal to sing for more than half my life, so good job!!
I sung this in choir about 8 years and still remember all the words. This song has stuck with me
This piece makes me feel like I'm about to pass out from the beauty
Ooh...
Mother mary, full or grace, awaken,
All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken,
Taken by the sea,
Mother mary calm our fears, have mercy,
Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy,
Hear our mournful plea,
Our world has been shaken,
We wander our homelands forsaken,
In the dark night of the soul bring some comfort to us all,
O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace,
That our sorrows may be faced,
Mary fill the glass to overflowing,
Illuminate the path where we are going,
Have mercy on us all,
In funeral fires burning,
Each flame to your mystery returning,
In the dark night of the soul your shattered dreamers,
Make them whole,
O mother mary find us where we've fallen out of grace,
Lead us to a higher place,
In the dark night of the soul our broken hearts you can make whole,
O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace,
Let us see your gentle face, Mary.
Ooh.

Thank you so much for the lyrics

Me too😭
My choir is singing it this spring. I’m fully prepared to bawl out loud!!😭

Literally same.

If there's anything I love just as much as hearing people sing soulfully
It's watching them sing soulfully

LOVE that they didn't rush the tempo. Should sound like a prayer and heartfelt, not like you're trying to get finished. Great job guys
I performed in Australia at the Sydney Opera House under Craig’s direction in 2018. So much talent and awesome person.
Sang this at my Honor Chorus. Such a nice piece and I got tingles singing and listening to it.
