Imagine being a hardworking medieval farmer, entering the church and listening to this chant. Impossible not to think the angels are welcoming you in heaven.
@Christian Trevisan imagine naively thinking it wasn't. Money. Power. The catholic church had that in spades back then. And they sure weren't afraid to show it.
rob062388 The Catholic Church doesn’t do that anymore, other religions such as a lot of Muslim faiths still do to this day. I understand you might have a grudge against the Church for whatever reason but don’t act like it is about any moral reasons. The Church is beautiful and without it as it currently is, millions would literally die of starvation as we are the biggest donors of food/aid than everyone else combined. Let go of your biases and understand the faith before you criticize it. There are many angles to history and it would do you a lot of good to get perspectives from both sides before commenting further.

I listen to this song every morning, praying my baby will be released from the NICU. He has tuberous sclerosis and he's only 6 days old today. I haven't been able to hold him since he was born. It's been absolutely torturous. I just want my son to be healed. Please pray for my son Levi Michael Gabriel 🙏 Update as of 1/15/2022: We got to take Levi home in late November. He has daily seizures, but he's still a happy go lucky baby that hardly cries. He has been a huge blessing to our family and he's incredibly attached to me. Levi does need brain surgery to remove tubers in his occipital lobe. The tumors I'm his heart have shrunk since he was born on October 11th. Thank you everyone that has prayed for my adorable baby boy. 👶
Although you may not have been able to hold your son, God is holding him. Mark 10: 16And he (Jesus) took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. Jeremiah 1: 5“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” People forget that a prophet wasn't just someone who reveals God's word to us, but also teaches God's people. Your son was given a task by God. Your son is teaching God's people to have faith in God.
God will bless you sister.Don't worry. He will be alright. One day after many years you both will hear this song together and look back to this day.Sorry for my broken english.I hope you have a great and happy life ahead

I am an Atheist, sang in choirs for many years, and was in a small a capella group singing motets similar to this, even sang in special church services sometimes to support the religious in our group, went to evensong in Winchester Cathedral to enjoy the singing and wonderful acoustics in our last trip to England, so even though the rituals don't impress me, the range of beautiful music is certainly the one bright light in religion. especially Christianity. The occasional mumbling minister was worth it for the lovely music we could sing.
@@aidanfletcher1236 "the holy spirit flows through this music and changes you". Nope, I love the music but I am still an Atheist, and am not impressed with the Catholic decor of idols. I have been in many Catholic cathedrals in Europe, impressive architecture. My daughter in law is Catholic, so seen it many times. Perhaps a bit more "holy spirit " in the form of sacramental wine would do the job. Music is universal. I listen to Chinese, Russian, all sorts, depending on my mood. Cheers.
Bless you. I am a woman born into Christianity. I no longer consider myself Chrisitan, or part of any religion. But I believe in God, saints and angels. Surely this is how the angels sing.

Dear Rick, this is absolutely true. I like the idea of displacing the Singers from one another. The Sound is awesome as a result. And it is so beautiful to look at. Good Conductor !
have a look at Elam Rotem's video on that matter. Basically, the piece as sung in this video is by no means as Allegri has intended it: the presence of both men and women is not historical, the pitch, even the music! It's a huge fraud and it still amazes me that, at the state of things on a musicological level, there are still people scamming us in this brutal way.
Some fun history about this piece: It was (allegedly) originally performed exclusively in the Sistine Chapel, specifically during two services in Holy Week each year. The score was a closely held church secret, and transcribing it was forbidden. That is, until a 14 year old Mozart visited Rome and attended the first service of the week. He heard the song once and wrote it down that evening from memory. Then he attended the second service later in the week to correct any errors. The Pope's response to this was something along the lines of "bro that's awesome," and summoned Mozart back to the Vatican to give him an award. The restrictions on performing the piece were later lifted, giving us this masterpiece today. As with many things in history though, there’s not much hard evidence to support the story. So I can’t really say whether or not it happened this way, or if it happened at all. Regardless, it’s a fun story that highlights the genius that Mozart was even at a young age.
HAHAHA, what a great snippet of history; thank you! I could totally picture the deacon in charge of "keeping the piece a secret" and then watching Mozart write it down perfectly from memory like "no biggie"! Cheers!
yes! mozart was bestowed the highest papal rank ever created, still, he was not proud of it, he even lost it. Before being awarded, the pope suspected that he had stolen the notes, so he incarecated him
This is the first pirated song ever. Miserere was supposed to be played only in the Sistine Chapel during Easter, until a young Mozart went there when he was 14 years old, heard it, and transcribed it by memory back at home. (Please read Gino Madrid answer for more information)
When I was in College, our choir sang this. It was the first time i had ever heard it. I have always loved it. The College was run by Benedictine Monks who were actually Catholic.
Composed around 1638 During the reign of Pope Urban VIII. If you have the patience to look it up, you will find the Latin text and also the English translation.
@@seaglass22 There is an important difference between looking up a translation and understanding a language. I studied Latin for almost a decade, so patience is not the missing ingredient. Also, the version composed in the 1630s bares remarkably little resemblance to this contemporary performance. I was just making an off-the-cuff compliment, which is easy to pick apart if you want to scrutinize it.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy. According unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies remove my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquities, and cleanse me from my sin. I knowingly confess my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done evil before Thee: that they may be justified in Thy sayings, and might they overcome when I am judged. But behold, I was formed in iniquity: and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, Thou desirest truth in my innermost being: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, make me whiter than snow. Open my ears and make me hear of joy and gladness: and my bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn away Thy face from my sins: and remember not all my misdeeds. Create in me a clean heart, O God: and make anew a righteous spirit within my body. Do not cast me away from Thy presence: and take not Thy holy spirit from me.< br/>Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. I will teach those that are unjust Thy ways: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from blood, O God, the God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness. O Lord, open my lips: and my mouth shall spring forth Thy praise. For Thou desirest no sacrifice, where others would: with burnt offerings Thou wilt not be delighted. Sacrifices of God are broken spirits: dejected and contrite hearts, O God, Thou wilt not despise. Deal favorably, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Zion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with small and large burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon your altar.
I was raised Catholic, but these days am very firmly Atheist. I routinely return to this piece to reaffirm my faith in humanity. Whatever the reasons for Allegri to have composed such ethereal music, divine or otherwise, it is a reminder of the goodness and beauty that humanity is capable of. Whatever your religion, or whether like myself, you're a humanist, this music speaks to us all in a special way. It is a reminder that no matter how hard life can be, and we all know that's pretty hard, there are still moments of utmost beauty to be found. And the simple pleasure of those moments, whether it's listening to this glorious music, watching a perfect sunset, or sharing a meal with family/ friends, is what makes this life not just bearable, but special. Peace.
It takes talent, and most of all a great deal of personal and spiritual dedication to practice to do what these vocal artists have accomplished in this piece. What's amazing is that works like this show all of us that we all have the capacity and ability to excel in our respective professions, and passions. This piece reminds us that, every day we are alive, we all have before us the opportunity to use our gifts for good, or for ill; it is our choice, and God willing, we will choose for the good.

Miserere mei, Deus, Latin for "Have mercy on me, O God" is a setting of Psalm 51 by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri. It was composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s, for the exclusive use of the Sistine Chapel during the Tenebrae services of Holy Week, and its mystique was increased by unwritten performance traditions and ornamentation. It is written for two choirs, of five and four voices respectively, singing alternately and joining to sing the ending in 9-part polyphony.
Legend has it that Mozart witnessed the performance as a child and was able to replicate it and made it available for playing outside the Sistine Chapel. Kind of vinyl rip.

@Jude M yes, and the work of LOTR itself is very obviously Catholic to the core aswell. Not just the music, but the symbolism etc. aswell. and of course the use of demons, angels, fallen angels (the fallen angel "Melkor" in LOTR is literally copy-pasted from the fallen angel "Satan" in the Bible), the one Creator (God), darkness vs. light etc.. all of it has a very deep connection to Catholicism, which is confirmed by Tolkien himself: "The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally Catholic work". The same goes for the Hobbit. An interesting fact: in The Hobbit, when the White Council attacks Dol Guldur, the scene where Galadriel is lying on the floor with Gandalf's unconscious body in her arms, was deliberately shot to mimic the statue of the Pieta (they talk about it in the DVD extras).
@@TheChillty Exactly! And also, though I could be wrong on this one, the whitening of Gandalf's robes and appearance upon his rebirth/return to Middle-Earth, somewhat emulating the imagery of Jesus' resurrection.
@@TheChillty Lord of The Rings is first and foremost a retelling of Norse and Germanic pagan mythology, but there are obvious catholic themes certainly. There's also the themes, expanded on in Silmarillion, about the "garden of Eden" with the elvish home across the sea. There's also the Atlantis myth of Numenor and many, many pagan germanic and norse myths. LOTR is many things to many people, which is why it's so popular. You can also see it as a retelling of Europe with the Shire actually geographically located as Britain and the large empires to the South being those of Rome. Then of course the dark enemy to the South-East, speaking a coarse and strange language, some would say reminiscent of arabic.
@@erich8430 not first and foremost "norse retelling". its an almost explicit catholic work, where all the myths together builds up the divine echo of "the Truth", of which is Christianity. Fact : Allegri’s ‘Miserere Mei, Deus’ was written in 1638 in the Vatican, as part of his work as a singer in the Sistine Chapel. It was regarded as so special that the Pope ordered that only 3 copies ever left the Vatican: one for the Padre Martini, one for the King of Portugal and one for the Holy Roman Emperor. Playing it on other places punishable by excommunication. Then Mozart when visiting rome happened to hear this masterpiece, went home and transcribed the piece from memory for the entire 15 minutes. At the time Mozart was 14.
And you’re wrong lol While the story you've provided is intriguing, it appears to be a fictional creation. Allegri's "Miserere Mei, Deus" is indeed a renowned composition, but the details about its restricted distribution and Mozart's alleged transcription at the age of 14 are not historically accurate. It's always fascinating to imagine such scenarios, but it's essential to distinguish between historical facts and creative storytelling. You are servants of the devil for not seeking truth

Yes, and 1638 is post-Renaissance, not medieval as the dopey You Tube generation thinks . That's because they don't know music and don't know the difference between chant (Miserere is not) and polyphony (Miserere is). More importantly read more widely. The teenage Mozart story is now very much debated as a charming myth.

The book in the Bible called Psalm is this; It is a book of music. More specifically Psalm 51. It was only sung during the Holy Week. You are literally listening to the Bible in music.
It was a secret for over a hundred years in the Vatican. Then Mozart heard it just once and wrote down the music from memory. It is about the misery you feel when confessing your sins.
If I'm not mistaken it is one of the Psalms in Latin, which may have been why he was able to remember it easier than others; I'm sure Mozart knew basic Latin.

I know this may not be the most historically accurate version but just imagine being a peasant in the past, walking into the church and hearing this magnificent music. How do you not feel like you are in presence of a glorious, divine and all-powerful being? How do you remain unmoved?
As I learned some time ago, you must have been to Rome to hear this piece for more than a hundred years, because it was only sung at St. Peter and to copy the score was highly illegal
well done. It's important to get a broad musical experience without any prejudice, so we see the beauty in difference to what we already know. Imho I think there is no better to broaden one's cultural horizon than music from different times and places. Again, well done.
@@harrisonreed8718 I will tell you as an Audio engineer .... Melodyne ??? You must be young or unaware of acoustics or how music is really being recorded(outside of digital recording studios) or performed and how well trained these singers are.... This is NOT recorded in a studio it is recorded on the spot (its the whole point to record it there really because of the acoustics of the church) , there are mics here only you dont see them because they are not placed in front of singers because this church itself is like an effect chamber and placement of singers gives their voice distinct depth and sound . The reason they are standing like this(even moving around) is because they were carefully positioned so they would sound like this , there are no effects added (like reverb) its all Space of the church having its own carefully thought of acoustics . This piece is specially composed to be performed in Sistine Chapel , the acoustics and the feel of the chapel were taken into account when Allegri composed this . What you heard is literally a product of a craft that is being perfected for the last 1000 years , way before recording studios even existed so you mentioning melodyne made me chuckle , sorry. The only part of this touched by a computer is maybe some mastering and mix tweaks , that is all .
Sometimes the highest voice is done by a small boy who hasn’t reached puberty yet, it is supposed to be more of an echo in your mind rather than the meat and potatoes in the middle.

Woa, fancy seeing you here Mr. Graham.
have a look at Elam Rotem's video on that matter. Basically, the piece as sung in this video is by no means as Allegri has intended it: the presence of both men and women is not historical, the pitch, even the music! It's a huge fraud and it still amazes me that, at the state of things on a musicological level, there are still people scamming us in this brutal way.
@@maurocolantonio9617 already seen it. Great video and great channel!
Some fun history about this piece:
It was (allegedly) originally performed exclusively in the Sistine Chapel, specifically during two services in Holy Week each year.
Cheers!
I feel wildly unaccomplished for some reason now
The restriction on this hymn outside the sistine chapel is a myth
yes! mozart was bestowed the highest papal rank ever created, still, he was not proud of it, he even lost it. Before being awarded, the pope suspected that he had stolen the notes, so he incarecated him
This story never ceases to amaze me. This masterpiece could of been lost to the ages.
This is the first pirated song ever. Miserere was supposed to be played only in the Sistine Chapel during Easter, until a young Mozart went there when he was 14 years old, heard it, and transcribed it by memory back at home. (Please read Gino Madrid answer for more information)

It's a setting of Psalm 51.
the singer is king david
Do not cast me away from Thy presence: and take not Thy holy spirit from me.<
br/>Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with small and large burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon your altar.
wow thanks for telling me that

It is a reminder that no matter how hard life can be, and we all know that's pretty hard, there are still moments of utmost beauty to be found. And the simple pleasure of those moments, whether it's listening to this glorious music, watching a perfect sunset, or sharing a meal with family/ friends, is what makes this life not just bearable, but special.
Thank you for this information! Have a blessed Easter!
Thank you.. 👍
Thank you
Legend has it that Mozart witnessed the performance as a child and was able to replicate it and made it available for playing outside the Sistine Chapel. Kind of vinyl rip.

No wonder Tolkien wanted his works to have a strong overtone of Latin mass choir music (elvish music, silmarillion etc.). Absolutely stunning
@Jude M yes, and the work of LOTR itself is very obviously Catholic to the core aswell. Not just the music, but the symbolism etc. aswell. and of course the use of demons, angels, fallen angels (the fallen angel "Melkor" in LOTR is literally copy-pasted from the fallen angel "Satan" in the Bible), the one Creator (God), darkness vs. light etc.. all of it has a very deep connection to Catholicism, which is confirmed by Tolkien himself:
"The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally Catholic work".
(Tolkien's own words). Tolkien explained to Lewis that the story of Christ was the true myth at the very heart of his stories and at the very root of reality, and he said that all the pagan myths presented in LOTR was expressed in a way to reflect the spiritual truths of Christianity. You can read much more about it in his poem "Mythopoeia"

W Mozart moment
I don’t believe you. I could ask ChatGPT to write a story like this. Ok let me show you
And you’re wrong lol While the story you've provided is intriguing, it appears to be a fictional creation.
Please be mindful of the effect your last sentence may have on the person you speak to and ask if they are in keeping with your faith.
@@PizzaLover-d6n
Yes, and 1638 is post-Renaissance, not medieval as the dopey You Tube generation thinks . That's because they don't know music and don't know the difference between chant (Miserere is not) and polyphony (Miserere is). More importantly read more widely. The teenage Mozart story is now very much debated as a charming myth.
