From the composer:
A Requiem at its core is a prayer for rest, traditionally for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest's "Requiem for the Living" (2013), however, form a narrative just as much for the living-and their own struggle with pain and sorrow- as for the dead. The opening movement sets the traditional Introit and Kyrie texts-pleas for rest and mercy-using ever-increasing elaborations on a simple three-note descending motive. The second movement, instead of the traditional Dies Irae, sets scriptural texts that speak of the turmoil and sorrow which all humanity faces while yet invoking musical and textual allusions to the Dies Irae. This movement juxtaposes aggressive rhythmic gestures with long, floating melodic lines, including quotes of the Kyrie from the first movement. The Agnus Dei is performed next (a departure from the usual liturgical order) as a plea for deliverance and peace. The Sanctus following it becomes a response to this redemption. The Sanctus offers three different glimpses of the "heavens and earth, full of Thy glory," all of which develop the same musical motive: an ethereal opening section inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope; a stirring middle section inspired by images of our own planet as viewed from the International Space Station; and a closing section which brings the listener down to Earth, where cities teem with the energy of humanity. The Lux Aeterna which then closes the work portrays light, peace and rest for both the deceased and the living. Christ's words are the answer to the Introit's prayer for rest: "Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

This piece has a special meaning for me. We were in rehearsals for performing it in 2015 . My son died the day before the performance and my director included my son & I in his dedication. (I was told, I of course was not there). Today is the first time I've been able to listen to it again. Thank you Rivertree Singers. Thank you Dan Forrest .

I have a tradition of taking my son to a Good Friday concert
And though I’m a choral singer he’s only a music appreciator
At 16 he sat there moved beyond belief
He told me “mom this is the most beautiful piece I’ve ever heard in my life”
I praise God that I forged that bond with him over this stunning piece
I praise God for Dan Forrest
I cannot thank the Lord enough for him and his contribution as a Christian composer today

This requiem is so profound and beautiful. As a choral singer, this to me is worship at its most intimate, a connection to God in the highest form.

With more than 50 years of choral singing under my belt, I've never heard of this piece or the ensemble performing it. Lovely stuff. And it's so exciting to see that most of the musicians (including the singers in that word) are young people. There's hope!

I had the privilege of conducting this with my choir and another guest high school choir in 2014. We were one of the first high school groups to perform it, and we had the added privilege of having Dan Forrest join us for the weekend as our guest. Besides being such a great guy, Dan has produced what I think will be a lasting contribution to the repertoire of significant choral music. From my thorough study of the score, I can attest that there is a depth of musical finesse and craftsmanship not often seen today in this current atmosphere of music thrown together for cheap thrills and quick bucks. Thank you, Dan Forrest, for what will remain a highlight of my life.

Agreed. Performed my first piece by Dan Forrest this past weekend (Light Beyond Shaddow, which I instantly fell in love with) which prompted me to click on this video. I would have much rather performed this piece instead of the Faure Requiem we did.

It’s my senior year of high school, I sang this sophomore year and it remains one of the most powerful performances I have ever done. I graduate in a week, yet I came back to this work. The first note hit and I am sobbing. Thank you for this beauty.
These singers are amongst the very best choral groups in the world. The group of soloist sopranos and mezzos are outstandingly good by international standards as are their solo tenors. All the River tree videos have amazing sound recordings which pick out not only the vocal, but instrumental accompanists to perfection. Wonderful, wonderful and ecstatically beautiful performances of Dan Forrest's superb range of works along with many others. I can't stop listening to them!!

Dan Forrest Thank you my brother for serving the Lord in this way. I was privileged to go to BJU in the mid 1970's and perform on that same stage many times. I so enjoyed the soloists on this one. The two girls during the Lux seem to really enjoy the tenor while he sings.This requiem makes me long for heaven. Can you imagine the music of heaven???

I have never experienced the range of emotions Requiem For The Living invokes. In the past 4 years, I have experienced the death of 3 members of my family and I know they were looking down from Heaven smiling. If this piece is any indication of what Heaven is going to sound like, I can’t wait!!
As a conductor, it is rare where I find a sacred piece that ALL my singers, instrumentalists and AUDIENCE find passionate, moving, inspiring, soulful, awesome, harmonically interesting, subject handled in a fresh new way. I simply LOVE each movement, and each solo and will see its fruition in SCOTTSDALE in March 18/19,wish Dan could come!
This was a highlight of my choral experience. ❤ I always love singing under Dr. Cook, and Dan’s music speaks to my soul.
I've had the gift of rehearsing and performing this work twice, each time, during a time of great loss in my life. It has been so incredibly healing. This time I was asked to sing the Agnus Dei solo on a tour abroad, and it's just the icing on the cake. Music heals.
Two of my favorite 20th Century composers were Ennio Morricone and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Two of my more recent 21st Century composers are Philippe Rombi and Dan Forrest. So much beauty produced by these four masters.
I saw in the side menu the picture of the choir and orchestra and had a listen,as you do......WOW. Its the first time I've heard of Dan Forests music and this GREAT choir and orchestra with outstanding soloists.The lll.movement is pure genius and we enter into a touch of what heaven will be like with the worship for Him that was slain before the foundation of the world.My wish would be to hear this on the Proms at the Albert Hall/London with the exact people who performed here.

I am hearing this for the first time today after going down a rabbit hole learning about Dan Forrest. Seems he's the Artist in Residence for Voce in Hartford, CT this year. What a joy it was to hear this piece. I was struck in my soul ... trying not to cry too much here at work whilst listening. This was epic.

I am unashamed to confess, I've listened to this well over 1,000 times. The most sublime music ever penned. Only Christus, by Franz Liszt comes close. Thank God for inspiring Dan Forrest. Kyrie feels to me like a longing heart calling out to God for help, though perhaps not yet ready to accept the help he offers. Vanitas feels like the anger, fear, and denial of wrestling with God. Then, Agnus Dei feels like the sudden peace and whisper of the Holy Spirit when someone sees the light for the first time and accepts Christ. Then Sanctus is the moment they step outside the door and see the world for the first time with new eyes; there is beauty everywhere they never saw and their heart is moved with love for others and the joy of being alive. Tears are pouring down their face and they're just thanking God for saving them. Then Lux is God quieting their heart all throughout their life and giving them the power of patience and humility as he walks with them day by day through the ups and downs, and finally cradles them in his arms and takes them from their deathbed to his gates of heaven. Perhaps the male soloist singing in English (his words are meant by the composer to be sung in the mother tongue of whatever audience it's being sung for) is the words of Jesus both welcoming his children into heaven and calling other lost souls to himself. Finally the swelling multitude of voices at the end is the host of heaven praising God eternally.

I sing in two major choirs in Denver. I recently discovered this rendition and this composition. Fabulous. This is just amazingly beautiful music. I have been singing in large choirs for the better part of 50 years. This is a major addition to the repertoire. My hat's off to the Rivertree Singers and orchestra. Beautifully done, folks! Dan Forrest, what a terrific, inspired composition! Bravissimo!
That tenor solo is is everything! He did it amazingly! One big line, color ans changed the vibrato when needed to fit the line. Just amazing

I was privileged to hear this performed for Maundy Thursday at our church last week. We had only one piece each for the orchestra and maybe a fifth of the chorus. It was still amazing. After hearing this larger performance, I'm even more impressed with what our director was able to accomplish. It's just an amazing piece of music. Beautiful.

This piece is all-important during these so troubled times! Ukraine - one of so many places of trouble, of unrest, of tragedy - for many families directly on site, as well as for so many fearing with them, while they fight for their freedom against the russian aggressors destroying their peaceful life and contesting their right to exist in peace.
This Requiem is so important, allowing your soul to cry out in agony for peace, restfulness, as a result, finally viewing the Allmighty himself as the only giver of peace.
The Requiem not only lets the singers cry out, ask for the eternal peace, but also lets them point out from whom this peace originates, who lets the eternal light shine and bring peace. The Lamb of God speaks out on our behalf, carries our worries and lets eternal peace spread out to all, who listen and adhere to His Word's orientation.
The singers finally point out to what should be our reaction in return: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts; Heaven and earth are full of Thy Glory; Hosannah in the Highest!
For me, personally, one of the most intense parts of this masterpiece is where the Tenor Solo proclaims the comforting message of Christ - found in Matthew 28:19: Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest!
A truly comforting message in these troubled times!

I remember going with a group from the Indianapolis Youth Chorale and watching this performed live, honestly one of the best things I have heard in a while, I was moved to tears. Dan Forrest, you have an impeccable gift and I'm so thankful for the music that you create. Thank you.

One of the most beautiful pieces I have ever found on UTube. Why are there not more people in the audience? Luckily this is available to world in good sound quality also. The work of the recording, the musicians, the chorus, the conductor and of course the composer is outstanding art; probably the best of the early 2000's.

I stumbled upon this while searching for Christmas Music from +Dan Forrest. I have been listening to this for the last 2 hours. After the first listening, then reading the explanation of it, continuing to listen to it, I believe this prayer is the heart cry of all believers. Deliverance, mercy, rescue from this body and the curse of sin... E'en so Come! Moved to tears each time.

Magnificent choir but that soprano sings like an angel
This work moves me to tears. I have the priviledge to be performing Requiem For The Living this weekend with 138 other singers and orchestra members in a benefit to fight the opiod epidemic. My son was a victim last year.
This is the most beautiful piece I've heard! When I discovered the story behind it, the music took on a deeper meaning. Having lost a daughter to Heaven, the music means more. Thank God for Dan Forrest and for the talent of Warren Cook & the Rivertree Singers, who bring the score to life.

This is a truly stunning piece of music. Regardless of faith you hold or not, it is such a spiritual experience, resounding with loss and peace and beauty and the experience of being human. And a powerful performance - must have been amazing to have been part of it! A magnificent new favourite for me.

OMG!!!! Good morning from a member of Elmira's Cantata Singers (near Dan Forrest's home town). This morning "we" released a quarantine version of Dan Forrest's "Silent Night" and this automatically started to play next in line. I could not turn it off. This is one of my absolute favorite pieces to perform and to attend, but, this rendition is spectacular. The soli's knocked it out of the park. The Agnus Dei moved me to tears. You almost frightened me with the Vanitas. On my third watch this morning. I grabbed my music and sang along. Thank you!!!
I listen to this every few months and have the most wonderful experience. It goes to the bottom of my heart and soul and creates joyful tears.
I just came back from a concert by the Connecticut Master Chorale and orchestra performed at the Danbury Congregational Church. It was the most beautiful presentation I ever heard and I just had to hear it again.
I am moved to tears by Jason Rush's wonderful singing of the verse from Matthew in the concluding Lux Aeternam.

We did this March 15, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC and will sing it again for the worship service this coming Sunday, February 21, 2016- Back by Congregational Demand. I have been listening to this version for days now - and am inspired to help this church choir with guest musicians and singers create something nearer to this beautiful Resonant and Rich tribute to a most fantastic and truly worshipful piece of music.

I’ve listened to this beautiful masterpiece countless times and I performed in it with my university’s chorale a year ago. Ever time I hear it my spine shivers nearly the whole way through, and I’m one of the least emotional people I know.

What an interesting and worthwhile find this is. I've never heard of Dan Forrest before, but on the strength of this work, I'd say it is an important contribution to the genre of Requiems written from the 20th century onwards that aren't of the traditional variety, such as the War Requiem of Benjamin Britten and the Hymnus Paradisi of Herbert Howells. Quite sublime - and a superb performance.

It's a gorgeous piece of music but still doesn't come close to Brahms' Deutsche Requiem, Mozart's nor Faure's. I assume you are familiar with John Rutter's and Kit Arneson's and wonder where you would place them.
I listen to this repeatedly and it never lessens in intensity upon my soul and mind.
The Agnus Dei is so beautiful! The two solos have voices of an angel. Tears are streaming down my face. 😭 I want this sung at my funeral.
My daughter sang in the choir, front row, 6th from the left. Wish I could have been there. Love piece of music, heart felt, and drawn to tears. Sanctus..Holy,,,, Holy is the Lord.

I had the privilege of hearing this live with The Master's University Singers and Orchestra this past year at Forrest Lawn in Glendale, California in front of “The Crucifixion” mural. It was right before Easter and tears where filling my eyes the entire time because I was so moved; an experience I'll never forget.
