Retro Rides Gathering 2021: What's under THAT bonnet?

- Join me for a very enjoyable day at the Retro Rides Gathering, Shelsley Walsh filmed on the 22nd August. Modified cars, stock cars and many vehicles with engines you might not expect! Such vehicles include a Fiat X1/9 with Honda power and a Commer camper packing a very unexpected turbo lump! Many thanks to the Young Retro Motor Club for letting me park up with them. You can find them at yrmc.co.uk as well as Facebook etc.

"Reeks of poverty" right in earshot of the owner, brilliant!
Was that the Mk 2 Escort if I remember rightly?
Strangely enough, I dreamt of driving exactly one of those (yes, poverty spec!) in light blue just a few months ago, and actually LIKING its "basicness".
I think what I _really_ appreciated, is that as someone who was very poor growing up, being able to go out *in a car* was really special, rather than waiting for a bus.
This car gave me something of value to appreciate.
I think my mother had actually bought it and was sat in the passenger seat - I felt very thankful that she'd (somehow) been able to afford it.
A *real* investment.
I thought that exact thing.
Pov Pack and it was beautifully maintained as such. It was very much a compliment.
@@fugawiaus as in poverty spec, the actual car it's self is worth a bomb🤦
@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 I used to have a MK2 Ghia 4 door 1.6 in light blue, and i tell you, Ghia and L have not much apart, better dash and rev counter, better door card, intermittent wiper, square headlights and the vinyl roof.
How lovely to see everyone out and about again and enjoying their cars in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Bliss to hear the engines!
So when you drive a "Focus" you can be seen clearly. But when you climb out of it, you're all blurry! *Out of Focus!* Get it! LOL
Hey Ian! Thanks for capturing our Land Rover and CRX as we piloted them up the hill! Was an amazing show at Retro Rides Gathering this year. Was good to see you there in Betty, especially considering the recent drama!
You guys are so lucky to still have great tracks and be able to use them in the bonkers C19 world. Great turnout.
Here in Au sadly it's not like that so thanks for taking me with you while were all confined to home detention doing nothing here.
That Buick was a '61. I had a white '61 LeSabre convertible years ago. It was a garage find. It had been sitting for years. I drove it around for about 3 years and sold to a guy that restored it. That Dynaflow transmission is un-nerving. It never shifts and never needs to. Growing up in America in the 70's you could find all sorts of cheap convertibles.
I always enjoy these car show videos. Love the '60's Cortinas and that little peanut too! Keep up the good work!
Spot on. My father had a green 61 Chevy Bel Air with the same odd roofline.
Lovely selection. Many thanks for doing the walk to take them all in. Much appreciated.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first time at this event. The car of the day that I was really impressed with was the white Honda City Turbo near where betty was parked with the appropriate Honda commuter bike in the boot. So many great cars and there. Definitely will book tickets for next year.
I wouldn't look twice at a turquoise car when I was younger, but I now love the colour...
I actually had one of the cars you featured, the Bedford HA van, mine was registered LCH 483W. A basic simple machine that served us well.
Never had that model in Australia, only the Viva sedan before the HB was launched with a Holden identity. Perhaps Holden thought it would cannibalise sales from the full-size panel vans. Ford was prepared to offer the Escort vans in RWD generations that were sold here.
Wow! Literally dribbling at the variety on offer at this meeting! So many 'ordinary' cars that used to be everywhere and now are exceedingly rare, the Renault 19 convertible for example. Liked the reference to the Frontera too, a diesel version of which ranks amongst the worst cars I have ever driven (perhaps of that period 🤔)! Great video 👍.
It had peaked at the white Rapid when the 126 Brown hove into view - oh my what a beauty so rare so cute
“Listen to the XUD clatter”
What a classic quote
Great to see a Kiwi classic AU Fairmont Betty is beautiful hope you have many years together
"I'll save myself some walking and go and watch them coming in"
(does a lot more walking)
Thanks for taking the time to film such a great video of a great event, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
Wow, what a large event. You really have entertaining and relaxed car events in the UK, large and diverse and still not that crowded so, as we say in NL, you can walk over the heads.
The unusual square headlamps on the Golf in the beginning are the same as on the US market version, perhaps someone retrofitted them?
We did have the round headlamp'ed Rabbit/Golf here in the States, ca. 1975-78 models; the square headlamps appeared in the Pennsylvania-assembled models from 1979 thru '82, IIRC.
That Metro at the start sounded like it was working up a head of steam to do a huge backfire.
Awesome and fun event report: beige, brown & customs👍
With your Betty, quoting here, "nicely done", and thank you!
Saw a green Renault 12 here in Guildford this evening.
Well done Ian on your long walk with the camera, I was knackered just watching it.
You do quite a bit of walking. As the field of parked cars is pretty big, then you need to climb the hill to get to the decent corner on the coarse which is pretty steep.
Astonishing brownnes... My eyes nearly popped out laughing when you said that... 🤣
Great to see such a big turnout. Thanks for doing the walk round for those of us who can't make it.
Ian your knowledge of cars and there names is astounding!! Well demonstrated at this event. 👍
05:24 "save myself some walking"
-walks 2 miles out of the show... 😅👍
Love seeing cars shows , that dont have lifted 4x4 diesel trucks. These cars shows, have such a better spectrum across the automotive range ,than here in the states
Was great to finally meet you Ian, hope the hubpooch is better. 👍
Finishes with a PROTON perfect ending
I’ve sat on those benches. Brings back great memories
Forgot this was on saw a few of the cars on the road Sunday afternoon when I went to collect my wife from Worcester hospital looked a good day out🙂
That consul Cortina was an Isle of Wight registration.. glad to see a classic from my home county ! 😁
This explains the three Fiat Pandas (one with a Sinclair C5 on the roof) I saw near Stratford Upon Avon last week!
That would have been us! 1993 Panda Fizz (red), 1992 Panda Mania (charity car) and 1988 Panda Sisley (Jurassic Park)!
I wish we could see more of Betty when she's in a video. You only have one of the most unique vehicles anywhere in the UK of a style the UK doesn't get and she gets relegated to the background.
Could we have at least seen part of the trip to the event in Betty the Fairmont??
Your knowledge is fabulous Ian.
Is that hill where Hammond turned over in that Nova he wrapped in christmas paper?
Ah thank goodness a new Hubnut video to kill the boredom of being stuck at home , thanks again Ian
Some really lovely low spec motors. I love it.
Thank you Ian for traversing those fields all day and for bringing us so many delights at this show, really enjoyable viewing, loved the running commentary, hope you got a cuppa at the end there.
I'm in awe of Ian's motoring knowledge. Great video! 🙂
What a great chilled out meet, lots of great cars on show.
Was a cracking weekend 😎 i was the closest spectator to the Integra in the bush on Saturday! 😁
Looks a great show
This video was such a relaxing way to switch off. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Impressive show. I need a walk now.
Thanks for coming on stand with us at YRMC! Nice to see Jurassic Panda pop up too ;)
I just realized I haven't seen a B3 Passat in ages! I love these videos so much.
Also, so happy to see a mk1 Focus, it's my first car and I'm very happy with it!
Cracking event . ..thanks for the fantastic walk around👍 couldn't make it this year
Best variety of cars you'll see anywhere!!
Brilliant video Ian 👍 defo the field of dreams that's paradise
Nice to see the appreciation for the Commaero thank you 😁
Superb video, thanks very much Ian. A most welcome event to bring something positive into our lives. As always, wonderfully filmed, spot on.
Really worked for this one Ian, bet your feet were sore afterwards.
Brilliant variety of cars there.
Great video and agree your overall general knowledge is extremely good.
You got my 4thgen prelude going up tge hill so happy days :-)
You deserve a medal for filming al that Ian. I hv been several times and make sure to get there around 9am as sitting in that queue would send me loop. And classic SW skies, threatening but never really seems to rain
A really enjoyable video brilliant job thanks for uploading 👍
Plenty of horsepower on show... The first time this event was run was 1905, and won by a 35hp Daimler (the first modern car)
Nice to see car enthusiasts and owners out and about, been to a few events my self, lichfield car show coming up in September
Love your videos Ian. Keep up the great work
Reminds me of the generation games conveyor belt going down the line of cars 😂😂
Wonderous variety....
Great video
Another great day out 👍 just what I needed to brighten yet another day in lockdown.
Never knew so many vauxhall nova's were still going, my first car was a nova spin, mostly seen in the 1990s at various outdoor raves lol nice fiat 126, shame there wasn't a bog standard 127 next to it but we cant have it all =) looks a great little event, lets hope more follow!
Another great video has always Ian and miss hubnut and hublets and dogs
47 minutes of awesome car content. Make the next one 2 hours! Great video once again, thanks.
Excellent video, glad to see 2 405s! Wish I'd never sold my GTX estate.
that cappuchino was my highlight!
That Olive Green V70, my mum had one in the same colour but a very early model on an R plate. And a very cool teacher at my boarding school had an early Jetta in gold which died after my first year at the school.
W412 AAY is mine
They're not as spacious as they use to be, Volvo Estates. The V50 I think it is looks about the size of a hatchback Estate.
Nice variety, but they need to sort the queue out, or have some decent lavatorial arrangements...
I was the silver Peugeot 405 , always enjoy your videos
I can't believe you walked past the Renault Extra and made no comment that it didn't have a bonnet!
enjoyable video well done 👍👍👍👍👍
A car pretending to be a "March"? We're nearly at the end of August!
Thanks Ian. An interesting day out, but with queues like that, it's unlikely that I'll ever drive to one of those events. Being there is another thing though. Therefore, it's likely that local events which are within walking distance would attract another group of people.
I stopped caring after I saw the Audi 100 in delicious brown. 😊
Always wondered what JDM stood for 😲
Thank you Ian for informing me.
Classic Hubnut rushes past a C4 Corvette to get a closer look at a HA Vauxhall Viva.
I was there in Shelshey Walsh in 2002 with my friend Nigel in his Lotus Elise
Nice show.
Looks like a fantastic event. Think my car would have fit in well.
Too many great cars to single any one out.
2CV with squared headlights! Those had been assembled by Cimos factory of ex-S.F.R. of Yugoslavia/S.R. Slovenia for the domestic market. Left hand drive. Saturnus factory manufactured those nice hradlights.
Most 2CVs had square headlamps from 1974 until 1981.
Really enjoyed this one :)
Awesome video nice to see all these cars still exist. Next video can we get the GSA to start lol.
My Olive Green V70 on YRMC stand!
Great show report, car of the show for me was quite early on, that 037 is some motor.. can't beat a good Capri though.. Best wishes. .
Nice show. but I'm convince Ian doesn't like Volvos at all. He's passed by so many and only mentioned a few. Never any story about those Volvos at all.
He commented on a couple 850's, that's good enough for this turbo-brick owner.
The Mk3 Granada Scorpio is mine my dad had one in the 90s preface
What a fantastic event, very impressed with the variety of classic vehicles there. But sadly, I have still yet to spot a 1984 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 GLS. I am beginning to think that none have survived. Such an advanced car for it's time - compared to a lot of the other cars available in the UK at the time. Not had a car since that matched it for comfort and refinement. Just a shame they rusted so much.
Wow, a mini racing green.
Looked at one for my first car (after passing my test in a Corsa B). Sadly had to walk away as the car looked superb but the owner wanted to knock £300 of but would put it through an MOT and something didn't stack up.
Ended up with a Renault 5 but have never forgot that mini.
Some interesting stuff there even if most of the cars have been vandalised. I wonder if there will ever be a fad for putting the proper wheels back on and de-slamming. That would be fun :)
Totally agree man. Would love to be seeing far more factory-spec cars. It seemed a 1/4 of the cars there were nastily slammed with poorly mis-matched and oddly coloured rims, and piloted by lads you may not want over to your bbq.
Wow, that blue HA Viva looked amazing. Not sure if it was a Deluxe 90, basically a Deluxe with the high compression red engine from the SL90. My first car was identical, I've always had a hankering to own another, one day.
At last a smart fourtwo 👍
Fortwo
So jealous!!! You have car shows and events!! :( Sucks to be an Aussie at the moment.
My boys are doing the best they can. Finding classics on Google maps and trying to see if the cars are still around on their walks!
That’s my red mk1 focus 😍
Very keen to see your review of the U12 Bluebird SSS! One of my favourite cars!
Unfortunately it has been sold...
@@HubNut This saddens immensely
I need to find stuff like this in the US. I'd wander in awe at that gathering.
Radwood🤷
@@bmorris5863 True, but all decades. Unless I scour every cars and coffee in NJ and PA. A big gathering of underappreciated vehicles.
@@29fetch not much like you say, very blessed to have all these shows in the uk.
Especially goodwood festival of speed
19:10 That Ford Anglia, I wonder if it had the power of invisibility and flight. I guess I'll have to ask Ron Weasley! LOL
...plus, it can almost outrun a steam train in flight!
@@craigmclean8260 Must've been driven by Superman......oh wait...... he forgot to change into his alter-ego......The car was driven by Clark Kent! LOL
Princess Anne had a Scimitar GTE, you know
Someone needs to enter a bog stock SAAB 2-stroker wagon in the uphill.
Car heaven 😍
