- How to fit manual cam chain adjusters tensioners to Hyosung GT650 or GT650R or SV650.
I include a check of the cam chain timing in case people accidentally spin the cam chain over the cam sprocket teeth.
I recommend, though, that it is best practise to mark the cam chain with a scoring tool against a mark on the cam sprockets BEFORE you remove anything else.
In general, though, you should be able to swap the tensioners in and out without any movement to the cam chain timing.
Good video. Annoyingly my tensions are gone on both my SV and my GSXR. Oh well. Double the practice.
What an awesome video. I've been suspecting loose camchains on my gt650r and found your vid. I was very suprised to find you didn't have hundreds of workshop vids on your channel. :) thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Your welcome. Sometimes it is the odd and unusual issues of certain motorcycles that frustrate owners the most. Makes sense to share what we learn
Awesome video mate. One of the best I've seen yet. Very thorough great info.
No worries.
thank you. I have GT650N 04 part discontinued..TT From korea~
Hello ! Thanks for your video :)
One question : at 10:29 (when you measuring the tension) : how much is the distance ? 7mm ? I don't see this measure in the workshop :(
Thanks again !
P.S : on my channel youtube (in french) i prepare my comet 650 gtr carb for Road Competition ;)
Sorry I had not got back to you. I don't know the actual distance. I just ensured it was not so tight you couldn't push it down, but tight enough that you can move it slightly. Not a very good answer but I don't really know.
Also great video
The sv650 is timed at the 'F' mark for both cylinders. Cam timing that is
Also would like to know
Can you use a copper ring instead of the rubber oil ring as the standard one you took off has a copper ring on the bolt for the chain tension
If you do reuse a copper ring it is best to anneal it first with a gas torch. I just used the rubber ones.
Can you do an ownership review of your Hyosung.
Sorry have not got back to you on this as I don't check emails and I'm not a regular youtuber. To tell the truth the bike has been under a tarp in the garage for several years now. It developed another electrical fault, and I'd just had enough of mucking around with it and had so many other maintenance jobs around the house that needed doing. So I stopped riding it. Perhaps will try again soon. However, apart from reliability issues i really love the bike. It sounds good, has amazing torque, good fuel economy, and is fun through the twisties. I put on a gsxr 750 shock which improved the handling substantially.
Hi i would just like to know how to set the cam timing from scratch
Hi. Sorry I had not got back to you. Unfortunately your question is beyond my skill and you would probably need a factory manual. If I had to reset them from scratch, with no markings of my own, I would take it to a motorcycle workshop and have them do it.
I have an sv 650 1999 (38k) . I use it to commute to work 5 days a week. I've had another camchain tensioner fail on me . On both occasions I was slow speed . The first time it happened the camchain came half off the exhaust cam sprocket on the front cylinder. The second time (the other day) I hit the kill switch as soon as I heard the rattle. Both tensioner failure's where on the front cylinder. I've come to the conclusion that the front cylinder tensioner cannot get enough lubricant due its vertical mounting position . The lack of oil is causing the spring inside to rot away and eventually break. This rotting of the spring has been speeded up by having water in my oil . The water is caused by the engine getting hot and cold two times a day and sweating inside . I am guilty for not changing my oil and filter often enough. To try and cure the problem I will change oil and filter more often and periodically put some oil into the back of the tensioners by removing the m6 bolt . The tensioners don't need to be taken out to oil them . Note that If your tensioner springs are already corroded, adding oil may unseize them and cause a failure !
Hi f Preston. It sounds like you've got a damaged head gasket which is letting coolant into your oil. You will have to get this repaired first before you can expect any reliability out of the bike.
is really necessary doing that? what happen if you stay with stock tensor?
Sorry for late reply. Might you rephrase your question as I'm not sure what you're asking?
Can I just remove and replace tensioner without checking the chain tdc
Should be able to
Yes. I included a bit about the cam chain mainly for the sake of anyone who might have the misfortune of letting the cam chain drop
Hi, I'm planning to buy a used 650N 2012 model. Is it worth it? What are pros and cons I should watch out for?
As probably have heard elsewhere, the electrics are hyosung's downfall. If you are technically minded and are happy to change coils or regulators (etc} for better quality Japanese ones, then you'll be okay. Don't buy one if you just want a reliable bike. It isn't.
@@jonono63 Thank you for advising. Have a great day. 😊
@@jonono63 I changed a rear coil for another OEM, you mention Japanese ones - what are they called?
@@flar7684 Buying Suzuki SV650 coils is the best, but I bought some for a Kawasaki gpx250 and they have worked
last year I was riding my 2007 Hyosung gt650r at full throttle for about 2 minutes and I was doing between 125mph to 130mph , I have gps speedometer and when I came to a complete stop at the light I heard my engine nocking like there is a solid object rattling around inside the engine . could it be the timing tensioner or something else? it feels like cams or something is hitting each other now .
hi bob bob. Sorry I am late with response but don't check my gmail. Some engine noises may be: 1. cam chain tension, 2. clutch rattle, 3. big end bearing (less likely, but possible if you had low or no oil.)
@@jonono63 I did new clutch , oil and new spark plugs that summer, am leaning more towards timing chain tensioner, since it runs but it knocks on top of the engine, I just cant tell which side. I haven't turn it on since last summer, been busy work to check the tensioners my self.
Hi buddy have you a link for the tensioner cheers

have you removed the ais system on your bike?
Actually haven't fiddled with the ais.

Hi can you please advise if the GT650R cylinder head and pistons are the same as the GV650 please
I'm guessing, but I imagine they would be the same. Essentially the same engine
