New Underpainting Technique with Daler Rowney Acrylic Inks

  • There are so many different underpainting techniques, but I'm always experimenting and I just discovered this one that I really like. I have used acrylic inks before utilizing their ability to establish dark values in a painting, but I wondered how they would work toning a whole painting surface. I combined the alcohol to them in order to keep the luminosity of the paper (which I like) and it worked great. While this is a bit similar to applying a watercolor underpainting I find that the final dried result is more vibrant as watercolors typically dry lighter.
I hope you enjoy the video and perhaps try this technique! I had such fun with it.
    Happy Painting!

I love that you introduced that technique with the acrylic inks. Until now I couldn't justify buying them...now I can! Lol

Well that was thrilling. I'm glad you liked my comment . I meant every word. I've not commented on a video before and this video surprised me so. Thank you for you teaching and the time I know it must take to put this all together for strangers.

Hi Susan! I love acrylic inks, so I really enjoyed this -- and I would never have thought to use them this way. And thank you SO MUCH for stressing the importance of improving drawing skills! It really makes you look at things differently when you draw them. C.

A video about how to put together a starter set would be awesome! I love your comments too and much prefer them to just background music. I am not partial to speeded up videos, I guess I am a bit greedy 🙂 I look forward to your new videos every week, I am not a pastel artist but you and Marla have made me very curios and excited about giving them a serious try! Have a great day as well.

So beautiful!! You always do so well!! I’m visiting Siesta Keys in July (I know, why in July!) but I was wondering about the Mount Vision facility and seeing about a stop there. Can you direct me to more information?? (I’d absolutely LOVE to meet you in person as well!). Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us!!

@@SusanJenkinsArtist Thank you so much for the fast reply! I have added these inks to my list to get. I'm actually going to be painting miniatures and glazing the inks over zenithal highlights carefully. Loved that color result! Art is such a wonderful thing!

How do Daler Rowney acrylic inks compare to Liquitex? Can anyone comment? Would Dr. Ph Martin's Bombay inks work similarly? I thoroughly appreciate your inventive styles!

Thanks for that info… I didn’t know that. But it’s probably because I cover up much of my under painting anyway.
