  • ** NOTE: If you have a 2007 G35 or 350z (engine: VQ35HR) there have been reports of an ECU update that is required to allow the idle air volume learning to work. Without the update, after cleaning the throttle you will have a high and unstable idle **
    In this episode of Motorvate’s DIY Garage, we show the proper way to clean the throttle bodies on the G37 and 370Z. (or any VQ37VHR engine)
    There is no need to remove the throttle body to clean it and it is safe to move the throttle plate.
    All you need is a used tooth brush and a can of carb / throttle body cleaner.

    Had a P0106 code, following the steps in this video helped cleared it alongside cleaning the MAF sensors. Thanks for the step-by-step!

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому +2

      Hey Ralu,
      I'm glad that you were able to fix the issue.
      The P0106 code means the intake manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor's output doesn't match the calculated pressure by the engine control unit. (ECU) This is used to verify the performance of the MAP sensor.
      Now with a very dirty throttle body, a P0106 is possible and cleaning the throttle bodies and MAFs should clear it.
      BUT it may come back: see this Infiniti TSB: www.infinitig37.com/TSB/ITB12-026a.pdf
      I assumed you cleared the code?
      In the future it is a good idea to use an inexpensive app like OBD Fusion and an ELM 327 OBD scanner and run a diagnostic report.
      Here is an example from my other UA-cam channel: ua-cam.com/video/T7O_vjsB2Jo/v-deo.html
      If it does come back, please let me know.

    Cool vid man!!..damn P0101 was getting me once every month or so. So cleaned maf sensor, but to no avail, code came back. So after work gonna give this a shot. Car's almost 5 yrs old now so needs it anyway. Thnx again

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  4 роки тому

      Hey stephen gillenwaters,
      A P0101 means the bank 1 (passenger side) MAF signal is not similar enough as bank 2.
      Check for any possible intake leaks on the passenger side and clamps are tight.
      If you have a cheap OBD scanner you can use OBD Fusion to display the actual reported air mass to the ECU. To learn more visit my other channel OBD4Everyone and watch this video:
      iOS OBD Fusion's Fantastic Diagnostic Report: OBD4Everyone Ep. 8
      ua-cam.com/video/ewNJDpWCKe4/v-deo.html
      With the engine fully warmed up (idle around 650 RPM) the MAF air volume should be about 2.0 g/s.
      Good luck!

      Well after cleaning both throttle bodies yesterday, noticed a big difference. Lots of carbon build up. thank you for the info, definitely going to replace the maf sensors as opposed to cleaning them again. Didn't think about checking for leaks but that is on the to-do list. Thnx again

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  4 роки тому +2

      Hey stephen gillenwaters,
      I know what you mean... The initial throttle response is so much quicker, it makes the car feel very responsive.
      Before you replace the MAF sensor, you should verify the sensor output. It would be an expensive mistake to buy a new MAF, put it in and realize, there was a loose or broken wire.
      Also, the scrap yard is a great place to get a cheap MAF and most offer a 10-30 day warranty.

    There's a good change that your MAP sensor will throw a code: P0106 after this procedure. If so then you will also need to use the following TSB and ECM relearn reset reprogram procedure: EC12-010a ITB12-026a May 23, 2012 which has been updated recently too. You may need the consult III computer and software to do this.

      Hey Flo,
      There is a lot of confusion and mis-information on the internet about cleaning the throttle bodies. There is no need to disconnect the battery.
      Follow the steps in the video to clean it and then do the three steps as shown in the "After Throttle Body Cleaning"
      ua-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/v-deo.html
      Here is why you need to do the three steps: After the throttle body is cleaned, you have removed carbon build up and this changes the airflow through the throttle body. So, we need to "teach" the ECU the airflow of the cleaned throttle body.
      Good luck!

  • @cardinaldriver
    @cardinaldriver 4 роки тому

    Looks like the butterfly valve itself is modular and can be removed with two screws. Is this a correct assumption? And also is any loctite involved in putting them back on? Have a 12 G37xS with 150 000 on it and it runs like new. Nothing but full synthetic oil changes has been done to the car since I bought it with 130000 on the odo.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  4 роки тому

      Hey cardinaldriver,
      Yes... but each throttle body has 4 screws and can be removed easily. There is not loctite and many have reused the rubber o-ring with out any issues.

    Great video.. very detailed! Quick question.. Would it be ok to remove the throttle body completely so as to clean both sides thoroughly? I heard on another video that you do not want to unplug the control module on the throttle body because it will throw off the idle.. but would it go back to normal if we follow up with doing the 3 things you show on your "After Throttle Body Cleaning" video to update the ECU? I have a 2016 370z Nismo and will be using your videos to DIY my own vehicle.. so keep posting these great videos! Thx

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому +1

      Hey traec1992,
      The most important part to clean on the throttle body is the EDGE of the throttle plate.
      That is the part that regulates the air flow. Cleaning the front and back of the throttle plate is just for looks (and makes up happy!)
      So... I don't think there is any need to remove the throttle body to clean it. You can if you want. BUT after cleaning you should do the 3 steps in the "After Throttle Body Cleaning"
      ua-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/v-deo.html
      I'm glad you find the videos helpful!

      Thanks for the quick response. Here's the update: I completely removed both throttle bodies and MAS. I used the correct CRC cleaner for each. Let them dry for about 30 min and reinstalled. Let me first mention that I have a few bolt on mods (Z1 CAI, Z1 HFC, AAM resonated short tails and UpRev Tune.. all installed by a professional shop out here in NC). At cold start the car idle at about 1500 rpm.. after about 20-25 sec it idle between 1100-1200 rpm.. after about a min or so it idle between 800-900 rpm.. it idled pretty steady at each interval. After a quick drive around the neighborhood (never reached more than 35 mph) the car idled at a steady 700 rpm. I also rev'd the engine to about 2500-3000 rpm a few times and felt no issues. Did I simply get lucky (not a chance.. lol) or did my UpRev tune override any issues I may have had with the ECU?
      Thanks again for the greats vids.. this was a lot easier then I thought it would be!

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому

      Hey traec1992,
      It is my understanding that UpRev or ECUTek don't change the idle control part of the code, so I don't think that had anything to do with it.
      If your throttle body is not very dirty, the ECU can adapt to the cleaning by itself.
      I think people get into trouble when they clean a throttle body for the first time at high mileage. If they don't do the 3 steps as shown in the "After throttle body cleaning" they will have idle issues.
      Anyways, it looks like all worked out well for you.
      It still wouldn't hurt for you to do the "After throttle body cleaning"

    Thanks for this very informative video. I'm following the instructions right now and everything makes sense, but I am having a lot of difficulty unlocking the squeeze clamp. The two clips that you're supposed to squeeze with pliers are facing down and completely inaccessible. I also wasn't able to simply rotate the clamp as you did in the video, as it was extremely snug on the hose. Do you have any tips for this?

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  2 роки тому +1

      If the clamp hasn't been moved in a while (or never!) they can be difficult to rotate as they get stuck/attached to the rubber.
      You could try spraying a little silicon spray (won't hurt the rubber) on the clamp and try to move it again... other than that, my best advice is to keep trying. Being persistent is an important DIYer skill. Good luck!

    • @bohanyang23
      @bohanyang23 2 роки тому

      @@MotorvateDIY Thanks again for your tips. I ended up buying a hose clamp plier which did the trick. Was able to get to the throttle body and clean it. I also followed the relearning procedures (accelerator released position, throttle valve closed position, and idle air).
      I just find it interesting that right after cleaning the throttle body and before I did the relearning procedure, while I did notice an initial (very slight) rough start, the RPMs were pretty much normal, both on accelerating and idle. After the relearning, again no noticeable difference in how the engine revs. So this kind of just makes me not confident that I cleaned the throttle body properly (even though it was definitely dirty and I cleaned the edges) or perhaps I didn't do the relearning properly (for instance when doing the throttle valve closed position relearn, I didn't hear the mechanical clicking sound).
      Just wondering if there's a surer way to know that this procedure was done satisfactorily? I'm not an expert on judging how the engine revs, but I assume if it revs to 2000-3000 in P, comes down to 650 without any stops or resurgence along the way, then that's normal?

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Cleaning the throttle bodies and doing the idle air volume learning will give you a more stable idle, with no RPM drops/stumble below about 600 RPM.
      AND the initial throttle response should be a little quicker.
      If your idle is stable and around 650 RPM, then everything is good :)

      I would (and did!). If you Nissan/Infiniti has the 3.5 litre v6 and is a 2007, don't clean the throttle body. There is a bug in the ECU and it prevents the idle air volume procedure from running to completion and you are left with a high and unstable idle.

This has happened a handful of times and infrequently, and am wondering if cleaning the throttle body could resolve this problem

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  8 місяців тому

      I don't think it will.
      The P1239 code is defined as: "the throttle position sensor (bank 2) circuit range/ performance" This can be caused by a worn throttle body sensor, bad connection, broken wire or other items.

    I have a 2010 g37x, and im planning on doing this job this weekend. Do you have to worry about spraying into the throttle body if its still attached to the intake manifold? and when scrubbing, do you have to worry about the carbon buildup going inside of the intake manifold?

      Hey Ryan Jermain,
      There is nothing to worry about when spraying cleaner into the throttle body as it won't damage anything.
      The carbon build up inside the intake has no impact on performance or emissions, so if you clean it, it will just make you feel better. :)
      The most important part to clean is the outer edge of the throttle plate and the inside bore of the throttle body.

      Good questions!
      In the making of this video, I struggled to get a good camera angle and ended up cleaning /opening/closing the throttle body 5 or 6 times. It is OK to open the throttle body to clean it.
      I suspect that in the past after folks cleaned the throttle body, they didn't know to do the idle air volume learning and had idle problems.
      If you want to remove the throttle body to clean it, go right ahead.
      The most important part to clean is the EDGE of the throttle plate. This is the part the controls air flow.

    I've heard pushing the throttle valve by hand can screw up your idle, isn't that the case?

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  4 роки тому +2

      Hey Mikolaj,
      For a Nissan or Infiniti with electronic throttle (~2003+) pushing on the throttle plate to open it up does not screw up the idle.
      ** HOWEVER **
      Cleaning the throttle body without doing an "idle air volume learning" will. As the dirt builds up on the throttle plate the air flow at idle changes and the ECU does a small adjustment to compensate.
      After cleaning, the required range of adjustment is too much and the ECU can't close the throttle enough to get a proper idle.
      The "idle air volume learning" process allows the ECU to learn the new air flow characteristics.
      Keep in mind, theses engine do not have a separate idle control circuit, only the throttle body - so it need learn the air flow when at idle.
      If you have a cheap Bluetooth OBD scanner and an Android device you can use this free app to do the idle air volume learning:

      Hey Atif Ashraf,
      Excellent question... and the answer is: NOPE!
      That is why after cleaning the throttle body, it is important to do the "idle air volume learning" as shown here: ua-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/v-deo.html
      This procedure allows the engine control unit (ECU) to learn how much air the engine uses at the proper idle.

    You can do it this way, but you might have a 50/50% chance you might have idle problems after your finished. And have to go through the idle and throttle re-learn process. I usually just unbolt the throttle body and clean it that way and barely move or touch the plates the throttle cleaner seems to get the gunk off pretty well by itself & the hard carbon deposits i just use a damp rag with cleaner.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому

      Hey Eks ls,
      The most important part of the throttle body to clean is the EDGE of the plate.
      This is the part that controls the airflow into the engine.
      Due to the crank case ventilation system (PCV) feeding into the intake BEFORE the throttle bodies, a small amount of carbon will slowly build up on the small gap between the edge of the throttle plate and the throttle bore.
      Over time the ECU (engine control unit) will adjust slightly open the throttle body to compensate for the dirt build up.
      When you clean the throttle bodies, the dirt is removed from the small gap between the edge of the throttle plate and the bore of the throttle body. This creates a larger gap, allowing more air into the engine, which increases the idle. Sometimes if the idle it too high, the ECU tries to lower it, the revs drop too low, and then the ECU increases the revs. This causes the idle to rev up and down.
      So.... We have an ECU that knows the air flow of the idle when the throttle bodies were dirty BUT they are now clean and the air flow is different!
      The Solution:
      Three specific procedures need to be done, to teach the ECU the new airflow of the CLEAN throttle bodies:
      • Pedal Released Position Learning
      • Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
      • Idle Air Volume Learning
      These are all shown in this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/v-deo.html
      TIP: If your throttle bodies are VERY dirty you may have trouble getting the Idle Air Volume Learning to run or complete. If that happens follow the steps in this TSB from Nissan/Infiniti: www.infinitig37.com/TSB/ITB11-060.pdf
      For the 2007 VQ35HR, an ECU update may be required for the Idle Air Volume Learning to run to completion.

But its idling & driving normal now and i just did a PCV valve delete to a catch can with a breather throttle bodies stay way cleaner now just your noramal outside dirt & grime no carbon deposits.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому

      Hey Eks ls,
      Yes it can be difficult to get the idle air volume to run.
      However, if you have a bluetooth OBD scanner and a Android device you can use a free app NDSIII and do it with the push of a button:
      ua-cam.com/video/OiB9txECWB0/v-deo.html
      I wonder what the long term effects are when a PCV delete is done...
      Instead of the blow-by gassed being constantly be sucked out of the crankcase, they are only "pushed out" under high engine load and vented to the atmosphere.
      Anyways, I'm glad you got your proper idle back :)

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  6 років тому

      Hey Tyler Hicks,
      That is an excellent question.... and here is why:
      The most important part of the throttle body is the small gap between the throttle plate and the outer throttle bore.
      This small gap allows for very fine air flow control. As the throttle body collects dirt, this small gap gets filled.
      The throttle body needs to open up a little more to compensate.
      BUT since it is open a little more, it does not have as much fine air control. (look at the second graph: blog.opticontrols.com/archives/727)
      If you don't open the throttle body to clean it, you really aren't cleaning the most important part.
      Carbon build up on the front and back of the throttle plate, or in the bore don't change the operation very much.

    • @joejones6968
      @joejones6968 6 років тому

      Motorvate DIY Wrong. It most certainly does make a significant difference. To thoroughly cleaning both sides of the TB's and the plenum bore, itis very much ideal and very important. As well as cleaning the M.A.S as well.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  6 років тому +7

      Hey Joe Jones,
      The purpose of the throttle body is air regulation. Carbon on the back or front of the throttle plate or in the plastic plenum don't change how well it can control the air flow.
      Do we feel better with everything clean? Yes we do, but it really is not required.
      Is there any harm in cleaning everything? Nope.

      Hey story1234,
      If you have a 2007 G35, don't clean the throttle body. There is a bug in the ECU that won't allow the idle air volume learning to complete. Some have been able to get the dealer to update the ECU and others have used Eugene at www.yelp.ca/biz/enthusiast-auto-care-concord to update the ECU.

    What does cleaning your throttle body really do? I’m curious. Im starting to educate myself about cars

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Brown Saint,
      It allows very precise control of air flow.
      The throttle uses a "butterfly valve" and the ratio of position and flow is not linear. (1:1)
      As it starts to open, it has very fine control of the air flow. This is required as most cars in the last 10-15 years don't have a dedicated idle control valve.
      However, after opening 5-10% the change in air flow is quite large and that results in difficulty in accurately controlling the air flow.
      As the throttle body get dirty, the engine control unit (ECU) must slightly open up the throttle to get the same air flow.
      The more open the throttle is, the less precise control it has on the air flow and weird things starts to happen with the idle.
      That was an excellent question and I wish you luck on learning more about cars.

      @@MotorvateDIY The 370 BTW doesn't have a MAP sensor although G37S coupes do. Probably the sedans do too. A lot of people with these cars think that by changing the airboxes to CAI they get better performance. That depends on 3 things: 1. The quality of the air filters; 2. The amount of actual air going in; and 3. The amount of cool air vs heat soak. If you don't get enough air you will end up chocking the engine, running to rich, getting poor gas mileage and your ECU will start throwing codes if it happens too often and that's when the SES light goes on in your dash.

      The idea of "doesn't get enough air, and runs rich" is old school / carb thinking.
      The 370/G37 engines use a wide band air/fuel ratio sensor, and will adjust the fuel mixture to fit the actual air flow. Carbs couldn't do that, and would run rich.

      Hey P Hanley,
      I have used Seafoam for over 30 years. It works really well for engines with carburettors - just pour a little in the carb and you are good to go.
      However, with fuel injected engines, I don' t think there is any benefit. Generally they run MUCH cleaner and have a lot less carbon build up.
      If your throttle body is dirty, it is best to clean it.
      (***Unless you have a 2007 G35 / 350Z then don't!!*** there is a software bug and your idle will be high and unstable)
      Seafoam alone won't do a very good job of cleaning the edges of the throttle plate.

      If you have a 2007 HR there is an issue with the ECU after cleaning the throttle bodies and it won't complete the Idle air volume learning, which results in a high idle. If you have a 2007, I wouldn't do anything -or- you can contact Eugene Turkov at www.yelp.com/biz/enthusiast-auto-care-concord and he can load the 2008 ECU software on your 2007 ECU.

      @MotorvateDIY  Рік тому

      In the making of this video, the throttle bodies were moved many times as I was trying to get the best camera angle. I didn't have any issues... BUT I did the Idle Air Volume Learning.
      If you don't move the throttle body to clean the edge of the throttle plate, you are not cleaning the area that controls the air flow. Google butterfly valve.
      I suspect in the beginning, the throttle plate was cleaned without moving it and it didn't cause any issues as the air flow characteristics were not changed, since the edge of the throttle plate were not cleaned.
      The throttle plate edge is the most important part to clean.
      If you clean the throttle body correctly and remove the carbon build up on the edge, yo must do the "intake idle air volume learning as you have changed the idle air flow.
      You will also notice the absolute throttle position is decreased since your trained the ECU on the new idle air flow characteristics. This shows the "idle air volume learning" has worked.
      As always, do what you feel is correct.
      On my G37, I can move the throttle body with the battery connected to clean it all day and as long as I do the "idle volume leaning" all is good.

      Many people are not aware that on most drive by wire (electronic throttle) there is a additional procedure that need to be done, so the ECU can lean the new air flow characteristics of a clean throttle body.
      For Nissan/Infiniti that is the "Idle air volume learning"

    WARNING: Do not do this for a 350z HR. For a 370z they might have changed it up. I unplugged the battery first, then I disconnected the throttle body sensors before disconnecting the throttle body to clean. I moved the butterfly valves to clean with CRC just like he did in this video. However, once I plugged everything back, my idle would fluctuate between 1000-2000 rpm. This is called the dreaded idle surge. You can not reprogram the car for the idle volume reset, since it is always surging. Took it to the dealer and they can not reprogram the car due to the surge as well. Best bet is to buy used OEM throttle bodies, or buy a whole new ECU to solve your problem due to the fact that moving the butterfly will short or fry your sensor in the throttle body or ECU.

      Hey Bruce,
      Sorry to hear that you are having this trouble. I am going to do my best to help!
      Why did you disconnect the battery and remove the throttle body connectors?
      The video doesn't mention that... and by doing that you erase the ECU (long term fuel trim and others)
      which may of made your situation worse by changing 2 things to the car: a clean TB and a reset ECU.
      It would be VERY difficult to damage the throttle bodies, since they are very simple devices: just a DC motor, a few gears and a variable resistor. Here is what it looks inside the your actual throttle body:
      ua-cam.com/video/HLQiu1kZ354/v-deo.html
      The VQ35HR and the VQ37VHR use the exact same throttle bodies, so I don't think the issue is specific to the throttle body.... now the ECU programming might be different.
      Questions:
      • How does the car drive when going 30-50 mph?
      • Does your idle still surge when the engine is fully warmed up?
      • Is the idle any different after driving it for a few days?
      • Is there a check engine light on?
      • What is the battery voltage at idle? (needs to be > 12.9 volts)
      Suggestions:
      • With the car off, remove and reconnect each throttle body connector (to ensure a good connection)
      • Reset the ECU:
      (from: www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-faq-how-area/25118-how-ecu-reset-throttle-accelerator-position-learning.html)
      Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON. A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.
      Operations Procedures
      1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
      2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
      2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
      2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
      3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
      4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
      5. Wait about 10 second.
      6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
      7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
      8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car.
      By performing this procedure, ECM memory is erased and the following diagnostic information is erased as well.
      • Diagnostic trouble codes
      • 1st trip diagnostic trouble codes
      • Freeze frame data
      • 1st trip freeze frame data
      • System readiness test (SRT) codes
      • Test values
      • Long Term Fuel trim
      Now do the three steps in the "After Throttle Body Cleaning": ua-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/v-deo.html
      ** MAKE SURE THAT ALL PRECONDITIONS ARE MET OR THE IDLE AIR VOLUME WON'T COMPLETE **
      There was one mention that the idle air volume won't complete if the coolant temp is more than 90C / 194F, so that may be something to try.
      If you have a bluetooth OBD scanner and a Android phone/tablet you can use this free app for the
      idle air volume learning: ua-cam.com/video/OiB9txECWB0/v-deo.html
      Good luck and I look forward to your response. :)

      I found this old technical service bulletin (TSB) alflash.com.ua/for/NTB05-067.pdf
      that mention to disconnect 1-2 fuel injectors to lower the idle so the idle air volume learning can complete.
      On the VQ35HR / VQ37VHR I don't think anyone's hand can fit between the intake manifold to unplug the fuel injector. BUT...
      This document (prostream.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Nissan-IAVL1.pdf) on page 4 mentions to loosen the clamp by the throttle body and slighly open a gap, allowing un-metered air to enter the engine.. This should slow down the engine idle so the idle air volume procedure can complete.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому

      Addition ideas to lower your idle so the idle air volume can complete:
      (from: productforum.autorepairdata.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4744)
      • Remove the air filter and use your hand to party block the air going into the engine
      • Step on the brake and put the car in drive
      Once the idle air volume has completed, repeat it again with the engine back to normal and in Park.
      Interesting option on Post 16:
      I figured before I replace the throttle body , I figure WTF do I have to loose, so I tell assistant to turn the key on , engine off, and to depress accelerator pedal WOT to the floor and throttle plate opens . Release the pedal, and throttle plate closes but it's still kinda open a bit, so I hold the throttle actuator plate completely closed and ask assistant to cycle the key off and then on a couple times while I'm holding the throttle plate completely shut when he turns the ignition key off against the actuator pressure as it automatically tries to crack the throttle open and closed after the key is turned off. I put the air duct back on and start engine and engine idle is good. Damn it worked, I wouldn't recommend doing what I did except as a frustrated last resort measure before sending a turd to the dealer and letting them throw a throttle actuator and ECM on it.
      I'm hoping something here will work for you :)

    Well this is obviously not an electronic throttle body because you NEVER touch or move the butterfly valve. If this is an electronic TB you just got very unheard of lucky if you TB is not damaged.
    The best way is to have someone in the car that switches the accessory mode on and off as you spray the cleaner... DON"T START THE CAR! This will open and close the butterfly valve correctly with out damage to the computer /TB I have always understood you never manually move the butterfly valve on any TB that is electronic

      This is on an Infiniti G37 that has a VQ37VHR which does have an electronic throttle. (look it up)
      On that engine you can move the throttle to clean it. In fact, in the shooting of this video I had to clean/move the throttle body 5 times to get the proper camera angle.

      In the specific example of the G37 (or any Nissan/Infiniti) you can move the throttle plate while cleaning it - nothing is broken and no damage is done.
      In the creating of this video, I ended up cleaning the throttle body 5 times and moved the plate many, many times and there was no issue.

      Here is the inside of the throttle body on the G35HR / G37 or any Nissan/Infiniti with the 3.7 V6.
      There is nothing that cam be damaged by moving the throttle plate.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому +1

      Hey story1234,
      I have not had any issues...
      Overtime, as the throttle body gets dirty, the engine computer adjusts to compensate for the dirt build up.
      When you clean it properly by pushing it open to clean the edge of the throttle plate, the dirt is removed which makes the slight opening a little larger.
      This results in a high idle, since there is a little more airflow.
      The fix for this is to run the "idle air volume learning" procedure to teach the engine computer how much air flow there is at idle. Most folks seem to skip this step and then think the high idle is from pushing the throttle plate.
      Here are the three steps that need to be done after cleaning the throttle body:

      Here is the inside of the V36's throttle body:ua-cam.com/video/HLQiu1kZ354/v-deo.html
      As you can see, it is just a simple DC motor and a variable resistor - and both of those are very durable.
      I think you will be just fine ;)

    Fail. That's not clean, you didn't get the back side, you can remove the throttle body from the intake plenum, reuse the rubber gasket/ o-ring providing you don't tear it. Don't unplug the harnesses from the assembly.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  6 років тому +1

      Hey Joe Jones,
      Actually I did... with the throttle body fully open, the tooth brush is used to clean both sides of the throttle plate.
      There really is no need to remove the throttle body, but if you feel that is required to clean it, that's fine.
      There are always different ways to do the same thing.
      The single most important part to clean is the edge of the throttle plate and the bore. This is what allows for very small and accurate air regulation.

  • @e7bk
    @e7bk 5 років тому

    In future don't touch throttle body just spray it by cleaner

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 років тому +2

      Hey Ali Kurdy,
      That won't clean the most important part of the throttle body...
      The carbon from the sharp edge of the butterfly valve is what needs to be cleaned.
      The more open a butterfly valve is open from carbon build up, the less "fine" control of the idle airflow it will have.
      Removing the carbon from that edge, allows the butterfly fly to close more and give the required
      "fine" control of air flow.
      After cleaning the throttle body, it is important to perform the 3 calibration steps, including the "idle air volume learning" see: ua-cam.com/video/HIiaF0VaTlQ/v-deo.html

      Technically, there is nothing wrong with the ECU, it just need to be updated. The easiest option may be to see if the local dealer or Nissan specialist can update it to the current version.
