$800 dollars for a new one and labor. Just bought some spray and old brush. $10 lol. Thx G
Its odd to me that humans in modern society spend so much of their lives in cars yet oftentimes know so little. Believe this will become a required bit of learning at home for my 3 kids.
@@Ericsaidful I have a boy on the way and you bet ill be teaching him young on how an engine works.
It is so easy to pull remove and put a new one, I bet it would be much less than $800.
@@Ericsaidful Your' comment jogged my memory of when my father bought me my first car in 1951 so I could get a job.
When he handed me the keys his comment was you better learn how to work on this thing, you're not calling me at 3:00 in the morning if you get stuck. It was a 1937 Plymouth. :O)
@@tallpaul9475 mine also costs upwards of 800 lol think he meant the throttle body itself is 800 and then labor is extra
THANK YOU, SIR!!! - my wife's 2004 Explorer hadn't been started since February (CV-19, y'know); replaced battery but car stuck in limp home mode, codes P211/2112 (throttle actuator stuck open/closed). A thorough cleaning per your clear instructions and it runs like normal. Cost=$0.00; already had cleaners and scrubbier.
This is the most comprehensive , easy to understand instruction for cleaning the TB that I've seen...I now need to get up the courage to do it! Thank you!
Totally agree.
Just spent the afternoon thoroughly cleaning my mustang that’s been dead since last summer. Started up and drove no problem after a $10 fix using this video. You’re the best man thank you!
IMPORTANT! If your throttle body is an electric one, don't force open the butterfly as you may break the spring inside. Also the adaptation without vcds or vagcom might work, but always check on a forum of your car on how-to do it properly, as if you aren't prepared it's cost more than let a mechanic clean it for you
How can I tell if mine is
@Thatbeanieguy If the TB is controller by wire from gas pedal? then it's not electric. Most cars in the last 15-20 years are electric controlled.
Yepp I tried to clean mine the way he is cleaning it in this video throttle body went bad because I used my hand to opsen it
Very good basic cleaning video! You did not forget safety issues and kept it real! Not everyone has all the tools, but a torque wrench can be borrowed or rented so it is not that hard. The key on torque is not to overdo it. Some guys think you have to grunt it or it isn’t tight. That is another trip to buy a part that isn’t cheap! Duh!
No need for a torque wrench at all it’s just extra

The best throttle body cleaning vid I've ever seen on UA-cam. And I've watched a LOT. THANKS A MILLION BRO!!
Perfect timing, my wife's '09 Sonata just had a no-start yesterday due to a dirty throttle body.
Best throttle body cleaning video I’ve ever seen
What you got on my 40, homie?
Great tutorial! The way the process was explained leaves no gaps in understanding throttle body cleaning. Thank you.
Love this brother video. He explained it in a simple to understand manner for a non mechanical guy like me. Well done bro 👍
Getting my throttle body cleaned on my car has worked absolute wonders. My car was stalling sometimes when stopping and getting it cleaned has stopped it wanting to stall. I'm so happy. 🤞🏻🇦🇺
I thank you for the insight as to why my 2006 Trailblazer is stalling and running rough when stopped. That's what I was looking for when I Googled how to clean the throttle body.
The difference that doing a throttle body adaptation can make is amazing! In SA we have a lot of Mk3 Golfs/Jettas and "Citi Golfs" that use the Bosch MP9 EFI system. The TB's get gummed up and the stepper motor struggles more and more to stabilise idle- a good clean and adaptation (channel 098 on a Launch scan tool) and you're good to go! Even works on getting a car with a 268,272,276 degree cam to idle "properly".
I was having problems with my car and was quoted R4500 for new throttle body, saw this video and decided to follow it and do as explained, long story short car works, money saved, great video.
Yeah shops are like that. That is why I mostly work on my own car especially since I drive for Uber and put a TON of miles on the car!
Thorough, articulate, clear . Home run podnuh. I will be referring back to this video soon to clean my throttle. Hats off to ya !!!!
Helped with idle problem, thanks a lot, just done it today and car from almost dead, and choking and spitting missfire explosion to normal idle work, can't beleive this was problem that much, once again thanks for help
Ya fingers crossed it works for me!!
Started sputtering and stalling, threw ecm code which shows either bad air or fuel intake.
Most people said MAF or fuel filter. Changed the MAF no luck.
Fought the “quick disconnect” fuel lines to change the filter.
Aaaaaaaannndddd nothing. Heard my throttle whining and clicking so going to take it apart and see......
This is exactly the information i need right now! Thank you! 😁
Excellent video. Very thorough. You even remembered the small details that alot of people miss, as in cleaning the mating surface of the TB and intake, also replacing the gasket.
Wow! This is THE best school of servicing throttle body, Thanks for posting this, very much apriciated!!
Explained to perfection and done so thoroughly. Thank you for sharing and for all the other helpful comments.
Thank you so much for making this video. My 2010 Chyrsler 300, has never seen a throttle body cleaning, but it will tomorrow.
I have kia forte koup 2010 and haven't cleaned the throttle yet. Thanks for posting
Wow, I am blown away by this video...So helpful thank you, Mr for making this video.
Thanks for the kind words.
Very helpful, did the same yesterday now watching to double check everything. Thanks man!
This video is awesome, clearly a professional! I'm a backyard mechanic with a auto auction right down the road! Love these videos
Your how to videos are so nice and detailed. I don't even own or work on any VW's, but I still like watching your videos! Thank you for making such great content!
Thank you so much for that. I tried to make this video apply to all cars, just with a lean on VW.
Lol this guy 🤣
Ok sir this is a great video.
Definitely learned something.
Just got my VW back from the dealership they cleaned the Throttle body and on my way home my tac would not go over 3k I did the key on then off and it worked.
Thanks again
Pretty slack of them not to do it before returning the car to you.
May have been some other fault.
Just did my 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee (replace IAC Valve too) following your video. Just what to reach out and say thx video was perfect step by step. Jeep feels better, runs smoother. Again thx
Thanks for putting it simple and easy terms. I will be checking out more of your videos.
Perfect video, very professional and well thought out. Keep it up. 👍🏆
Great video. Funny I clean mine today and used a screwdriver handle to hold it open just like you did. Brilliant minds think alike! I just use acetone since it’s 80 to 90% of what’s in a spray bottle of CRC throttle bottle. Thanks for posting!
Great video and clear explanation. I like how careful you are and the cautions you advise. Thanks
Awesome!! Another thing added to the list I need to do to my MKIV I'm sure it needs it lol. Great info Charles. Awesome work!
For old cable driven body on Peugeot is 15 Sec key switch on, 15 sec key switch off than switch on again start the car and leave it to idle till operating temp and cooling fans turn on . For new models its similar technique but with diagnostic tool :) Great Videos , im working in Peugeot dealership. Cheers
So on newer (2005+) models you actually NEED propper diagnostic computer to relearn after cleanin dirty throttle body - no more handy key switch on and off for that? My 1007 1.4 petrol started to work like a diesel after throttle body cleaning..
T to yu uyyy
Some manufacturers don't want you spraying the cleaner directly in the TB because they have special grease on the shaft that can be washed out. Spraying on a rag and wiping it is the preferred method. Also a lot of them have special coatings that can be removed by some harsh cleaners. I'm not sure the scotch brite would be good to use on something like that so be sure and check your service data before cleaning. Lastly, some vehicles it is impossible to readapt the TB learn values without an expensive bidirectional scan tool (like VCDS.) You can end up with some wierd stuff going on with idle. Honda, for example, will not learn the idle without the bidirectional scan tool.
Actually a way around that with Honda is doing a ECM relearn by disconnecting the battery ends and touching then together for 15-30 mins. That forces the car to relearn everything.
@@sony12345111 Nope. That does not reset the PCM, nor does it clear the TP data necessary to do an idle relearn. Been there done that and it doesn't work. I've tried it. I can say that definitively on an 08 Odyssey 3.5L V6. It clears all the stored codes and may clear some other data I'm not aware of but not the TP data.
@@johnaclark1 interesting, we do that at the dealership all the time because it's faster then finding a scan tool. I haven't had to do it that often but on the two cars I tried it worked
@@sony12345111 Yeah, when I finally got the scan tool that would do the job it has a data PID that allows you to see the status of the idle relearn. Disconnecting the battery and holding the terminals together would not put that PID into "learning." It stayed at complete. Only a "PCM Reset" or "Clear TP data" would change it from "complete" to "learning," followed by "complete" after about 10-15 mins of idle with no loads on.
@@TheRobertChannel It's not false information. I have an 08 Odyssey that would NOT relearn the idle until the TP data was cleared with the scan tool. The idle learn PID stayed at "complete" until I reset with the tool and it then changed to "Learning" and then 10 minutes or so of idling changed to "complete" and was fixed. I tried your method. It didn't work. Trust me, I tried everything and ended up having to buy a bidirectional scan tool. Once I cleared the TP data all worked well.
Really love the little tips/tricks you add in along the way (e.g. 3:00 & 3:30). Little things like that are so helpful to novices like me.
Thank you !
Great explanation/demo in a not too fast manner. Planning on doing this to my 4runner when the weather breaks
I'd say don't use a scrubby pad if your throttle plate is coated, like in a Mazda Miata. Personally id say avoid abrasive action if possible. That said awesome vid mate
why?
@@slygrinko253 because you can scratch around the throttle plate and air can escape and make your idle more rough
@@seanwatts392 got it, thank you
a scrubby pad is not going to scratch aluminum...
The aluminium plate is not the concern, its the coating surface may get damage
Great video Charles!!! Keep them coming. Happy Holidays to you and your family
Thank you for this video. The shop was trying to replace it. But it just needed to be cleaned. You saved me money! I subscribed so o can see more ways to save. Thank man!
Thanks! Clear, easy to follow, very informative!
Great video and tip about the Key-On relearn
Thanks
This vid was really well done. I appreciate it.
Definitely
Thanks for the video . And can now clean my throttle body with no worries 😊
Great video! Thank you for making this.
Cool! and thank you for the help. You rock!
I did similar on my 97 Saturn SL2 as I was able to get the throttle body off easily. Gas pedal needed a kick to engage, fixed it!
amak1131, I have a 2001 Saturn L300. I suspect I may have a throttle body issue. What were the symptoms with yours.
I might have to do that on mine with the throttle body it starting idling high this morning.
make sure you replace the gasket, even if it looks good those cars are picky. Had a Saturn with a weird idle creeping high idle and it turns out it was the throttle body gasket.
All I can say is thank, bro. This was alot of help
Finally I getting the bugs, issues cleared up. Thank you. ZZ Top.
Great video appropriate all the videos you put out alway super informative I own a 2010 Silverado that’s need a cleaning what kind of affordable device could I buy to reset the throttle body
Keep in mind that some manufacturers coat the throttle body bore with a specialized material and if you clean it aggressively, as this video instructs, you will remove the coating and the valve will not seal properly in the bore. This will create a higher than normal idle.
Maybe use a plastic "brillo" pad version to do the scrubbing to avoid scratching off the coating. Let it soak for a bit longer and scrub a bit longer.
Recommend this be done on cooking pots and pans, too. Keeps residual metal from being ingested and keeps the pans in better shape so they last longer.
Use a plastic woven dish scrubber instead of the green scour pads. Let the chemical sit for a little longer and scrub a little longer. Recommend you do the same technique for your dishes, too -- using dish appropriate cleaning supplies, of course. Your pans will last longer and you will reduce the micro dose of metals that end up in your food.
Thanks for the video, man!
Great vid man, you are both practical and techinal.👍👍
If you wanna call this throttle body dirty. I am not sure what you´d call the one I once cleaned on a mk3 golf. It had like a solid milimeter of crud all over the inside.
Yup, same with my mums Punto
@@miralemnermina142 Haha my mum has a punto. I am afraid to touch it because it just seems to be falling apart by its own.
zuilok dude my mk4 vr6 had so much shit in there...
@@zuilok Which gen one? This one has +200 000km and has been abused all his life but it's reliable as fuck
That is how my MK3 was too. LOL
Great vid, you should give us a vid on cleaning a MAF sensor properly.
I’m not a fan of cleaning MAFs in many situations. But that comes from seeing so many MK4 MAFs screwed up haha
Just had to do this to my car. Was running like crap and I knew what it was right away. Runs great now!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge... From Philippines.
Finally, some CORRECT automotive advice.
Btw electrical contact cleaner works just as good. Probably safer on plastics too.
Thats what I used. I didn't even remove the throttle body and just sprayed blindly all over it since I couldn't see what it looked like inside anyway. I noticed that there was a difference in how the car responded. One can also repeat the process at a later point though. Of course the best is to just remove it all together but if it involves reprogramming it and getting a new gasket if not available, it's better to avoid it.
HumbleMachanic Sir........I have to say your vids are so informative and man you really know what your doing. with ya style nature thankyou.
I appreciate that!
Thnx for ur video n its really helpful especially work on VW Golf n it’s the first time I’ve work on it after fitting back the new oil cooler n new oil filter housing..
Another method to re learn your idol..
Start the car and let it get up to operating temperature
Press your emergency brake in.
Pressed the brake paddle And put your car and drive. Keep your foot on the brake..
Let the car idle for atleast one minute and then turn on the AC and let idle for atleast 1 minute
Final release the E brake and take it for a quick drive so it will re learn the way you drive
Done!!!💪
The Throttle Body Relearn Procedure for 5th Gen camaro is much simpler: Idle for 3 mins, then turn off car for 1 min, then idle again for 3 mins. If it's still not idling correctly, take it for a spin at 44+ mph and then let it idle again. Voila.
I can’t do that, mine is standard 😬😂
Not Telling I have a 5th gen having that problem should I just do those steps when I’m at 44mph I just let go again till it idles how?? Sorry for my ignorance I know nothing about mechanic work. But mine is just wants to take off I cleaned the throttle body and know I try to come to a red light and all it wants to do is take off fast or jump like all accelerated it’s weird. Don’t have no check engine light nothing but that
I've seen a few cars go into "limp mode" all because of a (very) dirty throttle body. It can also cause hard shifting.
Can TB cause the gearbox to slipping?
How does a dirty throttle body cause hard shifting?
If the engine load % falls off the PCM can command lower line pressure in the transmission, the 3.4 and 3.8 GM's are known to have issues with this, even had a TSB put out, especially talking about the MAF but I don't see why a throttle body problem couldn't cause a similar issue.
Great video!!! So helpful! Thank you!
Fantastic video. Thank you for actually taking the unit off.

This is exactly the best information i need right now! how do i reset the computer after cleaning without using a computer?
Disconnect the negative post on the battery for a couple of minutes
Thank you for this man! Helping with my s4
Oof this hits home lol, clean vw throttle body's daily at work. Customers really notice the difference when done properly
Great video. Just got done on my Honda. Really easy maintenance. I disconnected the battery. Took it off completely so that I can do the backside. It was extremely dirty. I bought the car secondhand. Looks as if this has never been done. Lost a little coolant. But that was ok.
Now how does the relearn process process goes on a Honda ?
Perform a Honda throttle body relearn
Reinstall the Honda throttle body using a new gasket and torque to specifications. Now that the carbon buildup is gone, you must “teach” the computer where the fully closed position is. This is called a Honda throttle body relearn or Honda throttle body reset.
Shops perform a Honda throttle body reset with a scan tool, but you can perform it manually by following this procedure:
1) Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for 2-seconds. Do not start the engine.
2) Start the engine and run it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fans come on.
3) Then let the ending idle for five minutes with no loads (lights, heated seats, rear defogger, blower motor, radio, etc OFF)
4) After five minutes, shut off the engine.
Anyone know how to do a relearn on a 2003 VW Passat W8 wagon (4.0 L) throttle body?
Cleaning the TB and MAFS feels oddly satisfying to me
Best film on Throttle Body cleaning + 100s very useful tips for many other car projects. Thank you very much for such a detailed film. Can you immerse the removed throttle body in the degreaser and after washing it go over with throttle body cleaner? And can you avoid that procedure with resetting the TB position? I don't have VCDS. Thank you again.
Thanks for sharing this video, nice job
Always use tb cleaner and clean towels, qtips.
Do not use straight carb cleaner as it can destroy certain plastics.
You can spray the intake opening down too.
Awesome job cleaning T.B. But why did you leave the intake manifold so dirty (7:29-7:35)???
Your Channel Is very Educative. Kudos!
The video is so outstanding. Good job
That intro song is so damn old school 😂
Hahaha I thought it was fitting. 😂
Toyotas just disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Itl forget everything. All the throttle and adjusted fuel mapping are reset, which is totally annoying cuz after disconnecting the battery its totally not uncommon for a vehicle to run rough or even stall for like a day as the computer relearns and adapts.
trollaphobic most Toyotas have a capacitor in the computer to store power for a minute or so. if you change the battery quickly it'll still remember. I've done it a few times on multiple Toyotas.
Appreciate the video man💯
Its good you warned about cleaning throttle body attached.. some youtube junkies suggested that.. Also thanks for that clamp spray suggestion. I got a rusted bolt there. But the alignment is not under DIY.

This is classical for "das auto" cars, full of oil inside of throttle body.
Green Scrubby pad was a good recommendation. Toothbrush gunks up quickly and pads go further and work well to reach if you don't want to take throttle body off. (2004 Sienna ltd 6cyl)
Excellent video .from now on we should call you Humble Mechanic PhD..nice job Doc
Hahaha. I like it
Great video...You approach the technical side and the common sense side very well.. Now I won't go and spray dirt from the throttle body into the engine . I'll just spray some on a cloth or shop towel and clean by hand. I don't suspect this particular car has a very dirty throttle body. Looks like I'll soon find out.
