thanks so much. i live in Sunnyvale CA so similar weather, first year keeping mine outside. I have similar outdoor buckets with about 5 in each. Really grateful to know they will be ok in these buckets for the winter.

The winter will help bring out their colors. Just keep them chillaxed until end of May. Thank you for chiming in Medakahead @Christinawils71 !

This is very interesting and has me thinking . I have a problem with my setups , as I am running air driven sponge filters in 4 large tubs and solar powered pumps in 2 other tanks my water is circulating which I believe is suitable for the extreme heat of an Australian summer? . This means my water in winter might be a similar temperature at the top and on the bottom? These 6 containers are my winter tubs ,each about 200 litres /50 gallons . In summer I have many 60 litres /15 gallon containers for selective breeding but currently I have no fish in them as it’s winter down under. Always learning, always thinking. Only my second winter with Medaka outside.

I don't think you would have to worry too much during the winter months in Australia. If I'm not mistaken the temp does not drop much. On the other hand, the summer months are when I would take preventative measures to keep the tubs from overheating (larger tubs, shade. etc) I do not use air pumps but many do. The combination of the sun and heat will increase the amount of phytoplankton (green water) and decrease the oxygen in the tubs. I think you have a great setup going AS! Thank you for chiming in Medakahead!

He's a beautiful boy anyway even if he's not entirely up to snuff. I love how tame Medaka are, it's odd to see in such a tiny animal. Do you like the rectangular bins or the round feed tubs better on average?

The rectangular tubs are easier to net the Medakas when you need to. You can provide more surface area for the Medakas in a given space.
