I have ponds and aquariums. Ponds have the drawback that you only view from the top. But, I think this is where rice fish are good. With the high angle of viewing, they look pretty good. I especially the ones with shiny bits on the top of them.
Medaka fish breed quite well as long they have somewhere to lay their eggs, so even if the ones you bought die out you can still having them thriving in your pond.
Great video, I really enjoyed watching it. I started 2 years ago for the same reason. My little artificial pond was covered with moscito larva. After putting 10 medaka in, after a few days no larva anymore. And I can confirm they survived two German winter where the pond was covered with ice. And last but not least, it is a pleasure to watch them and see the nice colors.
Fishy McFishFace! And/or Medaka McDakFace! Katrina, I'm enjoying your recent video shorts... it's so hard to wait for your longer vids. I need my homegrown.garden fix more often! Best wishes to your newest plot inhabitants. 🙂
Thankfully we don’t get herons on the allotments. There is a cat who passes through occasionally but I’m pretty confident it won’t get to them as there isn’t anywhere for the cat to perch from above. It would be much different if the pond was at ground level though!
I'm so excited for this little project! I am not only amazed that you put together this mini pond but I am also fascinated by the predatory plants enough to purchase a "beginners trio". I'm still looking into how to feed/care for them indoors over our Michigan winter. Scottish names Hamish, Morag, Finlay, Nessie, Dougal, Angus or Teagan.
You shouldn't have to insert an air line into it as you have plenty of plants. Usually two thirds of plants to water volume that will do the job nicely for you. Medaka can live under both ice and snow so that shouldn't be a problem as long as it's 18inches deep. However, as it is a metal container maybe you could wrap it's sides with something to keep out the chill and stop the side waters from freezing too. I keep mine in a large plastic half barrel for insulation. Got mine this time last year. They survived last UK's Staffordshire Winter snow just fine and this year have bred. They are an excellent edition to my yard and since having them have not been bitten by the blood thirsty gnats. When they do breed they tend to lay their eggs in the roots of your floating plants. So, if you find that you need to take some floating plants out next year, be sure to place them in a bucket of pond water before chucking it and watch the fry hatch forth from it. You can keep them with white cloud mountain minnows too. The Medaka live in the upper part of the water column whilst the wcmm live in the mid to lower section.
Beautiful fish, I love fish. I have a reasonable size pond, I put Koi and fancytail goldfish in, I did get a fancytail that had the coloring of a Koi. One day my grandson said look at all those tiny fish, yep, all those. I was told not to feed them when temps drop, warned me if the food wasn't digested when they go dormant it could rot in them and they would die. Guess you were probably warned too.? Look forward to hearing the names you go with, wish I knew some awesome Scottish names, is Angus Scottish, I like that one. edited to say....looks like Angus is 😊
Hello! I love your whole new pond set up! The addition of the fish will add a lot to the enjoyment of just sitting and watching over it. I absolutely LOVE the music that you chose for this video!! Very fitting!!
I adore this so much! They are beautiful. I may have to look into these fish. 💕💗💕 Your bog pond turned out just lovely. How beautiful and peaceful. 🥰 Definitely going to need a seat right next to it though 😃 you'll be spending lots of time there I beat! 💗
They are amazing little fish never heard of them I definitely think Angus Heather Hamish brilliant absolutely brilliant I’m gonna look up those fish now see if I can get them in a pond xx
Great video I like Finlay, Nessie, Nicola, Haggis and Davy. You had the best smile the entire video. The proud mama! This pond will be fun for a long time. Thank you for your hard work to share this. Have a great week Cya next time
Your fish friends look great we have enjoyed our fish for many years in our water garden beware of other critters that like fish for a treat you may have to consider a mesh covering 👨🌾
Medaka are so fun, I got myself some too. I got some orochi, Pearl galaxies, orochi x Pearl galax. crosses, and youhiki (the orange ones). I plan to get some platinums to add to my group.
Amazing set, I also started with same 3 varities of Blue Miyuki, Black Miyuki and Orange Koutei Lame; but did you bring your medaka indoors now? I heard there is a new UK law that discourages keeping medaka outdoors.
Your fish are so cute! Really loved your video, you present so well. I'm Scottish so some nice names are Bonnie, Maisie, Craig, Isla, Duncan, Fraser, Kenneth, Angus, Hamish, Neil, Rory, Fiona...And as Scots they should belong to a clan, what about McHomegrown? :)
Lucky fish! Maybe some Scottish folklore creatures like selkie, kelpie etc? That's so cool they eat mosquitoes and don't like a clean tank! I'm being eaten alive in my backyard.
I would have loved a pond with fish but then I realised the 60+ pairs of Herons about half a mile away might have loved it too. That's a lovely project. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Great video 👍. Name suggestions: Angus, Hamish, Bonnie, Elspeth, Ewan or Esme depending on the sexes you think they are! I love the little grey one, so cute!
Just watch the Magpies they will sit at the pond early mornings and try to scope them out this happened at my pond I though it was the cats but up very early one morning I watched him doing it I then covered the pond with a net no more bother here in Ireland we call any Scotch Man Jock so may be you call the male Jock.
From the couple of fry that survived in my mini pond, they've had babies! There were 7 at last count. Will be adding tropical fish food now its getting a bit too cold for the mozzies.
Just been into my local garden centre aquatic dept and asked about these fish and they said I shouldn’t be putting fish into a small outdoor pond like yours (and mine)
@@barabas13 maybe it’s due to the fish and space. I chose these because they won’t outgrow their pond. There’s a general rule that for every inch of fish you should have 1 gallon of water. That said, some aquariums won’t sell you fish in a small pond (or barrel) especially if it doesn’t have a filter.
As ridiculous as it seems it is illegal to keep Medak rice fish outdoors! it is the sellers responsibility to ensure they are sold for indoor use only. As they are not a native species and can withstand such low temperatures, they are classed as invasive if they get into our waterways. The governing bodies of the OATA industry ( who have all ready been warned) are concerned that if people do not comply all imports of the fish will be banned. No Idea how such rules can be enforced but hey ho. I'll still be buying some. Great videos by the way katrina👍👍 Having just researched, there are certain varieties that are now allowed to be kept outside, but again how they can police this siily situation is beyond me.
Fishies welcome! As probably mentioned by multiple commentators you need to watch out for feline pests, not sure if herons are usual for your area but your blue tits/sparrows might need to be deterred... Names - Abhainn (meaning river), Beth (lively), Bhreac/Bhric (speckled), Dubhglas (dark water), Gunn (white), Maisie...why I ended up looking for names of Scottish origin on a baby naming website I'll never know. Future reference for you maybe?

Hi from Singapore! I keep Medaka on my balcony. When we move back to the Uk I'll continue. Such fun.

Wee Tam, wee Dougie, wee Jim, wee Jock, wee Davy. Hoots!
I Really wanted to praise you as a presenter for all the efforts you put in for us guys. Thank you.
I think I am as excited about your fish as you are. So glad you shared this with us.
ooo fish, nice - here are my suggestions - Esme, Isla, Hamish, Angus and Lennox :-) they must love that tank. Have a great day.
Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Diane are my five favorite Scottish names. Great project and congrats on the new pets.
I love the new fish.. I think they are going to be happy in their new home x
Oh they are so cute!! Your pond is complete!
Fishy McFishFace! And/or Medaka McDakFace!

What a fab addition to your gorgeous project. Love them they are very cute.
Love the fish, they look really cute. Our favoured names are Hamish, Dougal and Kirsty. Good luck and look forward to seeing their progress.
Awesome little habitat! I say you can't go wrong with Angus, Malcolm, or Bon. 😁😉
Thanks, learned so much from this project. I loved seeing the fish exploring the new pond, and love your plants.
Fun video 😊. I wish you the best of luck with your fishes
🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠🍀🐠
How lovely.
Great video.
They are gorgeous. My concern would be cats and herons, so I would put some sort of grid or net over the tank.
Thankfully we don’t get herons on the allotments. There is a cat who passes through occasionally but I’m pretty confident it won’t get to them as there isn’t anywhere for the cat to perch from above. It would be much different if the pond was at ground level though!

Hiya Katrina, suggested names from a Scottish Lass, Nessie,Braw, Pringle,Kilt, Angus, Hamish,Thistle, Heather,Braw, RabbiBurns,Mary,Fife,Alexander Graham Bell,Haggis,Neeps,Tartan,Clan,Scot. Thankyou really enjoyed watching, blessings luv Ontario Canada 🐝🇨🇦

I plan to get some platinums to add to my group.
I like that transfer method. I'll be setting up a medaka pond next year, I can hardly wait!
They are adorable 🌸💕🌸
Cute jacket!
Great video Katrina! Fish names: Hamish, Morag, Isa, Angus, Dougie. From Ian and Barbara in sunny Scotland!
Amazing set, I also started with same 3 varities of Blue Miyuki, Black Miyuki and Orange Koutei Lame; but did you bring your medaka indoors now? I heard there is a new UK law that discourages keeping medaka outdoors.
Cool... I learned a thing.
Simply loved this fish and pond project Thankyou so much for sharing all this with us it’s absolutely amazing I love it 💜👍
Absolutely beautiful job. What is your pond please? An old water tank?
Fabulous!🌳
Cute fish! My favorite Scottish name is David Tennant. Love your videos!

Hikari fancy guppy food is incredible for breeding, i got 100 fry at least from 5 medaka. Never happened before with normal foods.
Awsome. My fish had babies again this year 😊🤘
Brilliamt idea to call them Scottish names. Here's my choise, Haggis, Glen, Munro, Nessie and Lomond.
Have to have a Nessie!
I'm planning on doing something like this didn't think of using poly tunnel good idea
Little fish babies , i wanna see them
Lovely little fellas. How about calling them rice, paddy, me old China, fin and pilau. Just a thought.
Your going to have trouble gardening wanting to watch them all the time.❤
Already happening 😅
Nice
Very interesting, I hope we can get those in New Zealand
Look where I am Katrina 🤣 after our IG conversation ❤
Very good job I appreciate your efforts 🌹❤️🌹
Today I've just set out my winter leeks
One of the orange ones should be names Merida, Disney’s Scottish princess from the movie Brave!
Very nice 😍🙌👏👏
🥰lovely 😍 👌
I just one question? Will the fish be ok in winter ( snow ) ???🐟🐠
There are varieties of birds that prey on pond fish! I suggest Bird netting or you may find your minnows have been eaten...
Lucky fish! Maybe some Scottish folklore creatures like selkie, kelpie etc? That's so cool they eat mosquitoes and don't like a clean tank! I'm being eaten alive in my backyard.
Very nice! How do you feed them when there are no mosquitos (late fall/winter/early spring)?
Fish food as I mention at the end 🙂
@@homegrowngarden Thanks! I missed that part!
Are you a german soldier? Just looking at your jacket. You have the skirt which goes with that? It would look lovely on you. Nice fish by the way.
How did the carnivorous plants fare with this new addition? I wonder if the nutrients from the fish poop would burn or kill the carnivorous plants..
They were fine! There’s too little bio load from the fish to have ill effect on them. Plus the other plants in the tank absorb those nutrients.
Grounds keeper willie 😁
(Groundskeeper) Willie, Taggart, McBain, Scrooge McFish and, of course, Scotty. All excellent Scott(ish) fish names 🙂
Definitely Angus for one of them. Gussie for short.
I would have loved a pond with fish but then I realised the 60+ pairs of Herons about half a mile away might have loved it too.
That's a lovely project.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
maybe, that white medaka's name is "sirotomerin".
I think that I'm always happy with people with the same hobby. 🎉 😊
Great video 👍. Name suggestions: Angus, Hamish, Bonnie, Elspeth, Ewan or Esme depending on the sexes you think they are! I love the little grey one, so cute!
Awesome video as always!! Lets have a Hamish, McDool or Clyde. X
I don't know if the "Outlander" miniseries is as popular in the UK as it is in the US, but what about Jamie, Claire, Murtagh, Dougal, and Laoghaire?
Just watch the Magpies they will sit at the pond early mornings and try to scope them out this happened at my pond I though it was the cats but up very early one morning I watched him doing it I then covered the pond with a net no more bother here in Ireland we call any Scotch Man Jock so may be you call the male Jock.
Love the idea of giving them Scottish names. How about Haggis, Hamish or Heather?
Given that they're Scottish fish, you have to call one Nicola Sturgeon and one Alex Salmond
Hamish, Farquhar, Islay, Dougall and Maisie
From the couple of fry that survived in my mini pond, they've had babies! There were 7 at last count. Will be adding tropical fish food now its getting a bit too cold for the mozzies.
That’s amazing! 👏 I’m surprised they didn’t accidentally eat the eggs/young themselves 😆
Please do an update video 😊. How are they doing?
I think from her last video she mentioned that all but maybe 2 had died and she wouldn't recommend this sort of set up for them.
where did you buy your fish from?
It's in the video description :)
Molly is Scottish for Mary and it’s my granddaughters name
Just been into my local garden centre aquatic dept and asked about these fish and they said I shouldn’t be putting fish into a small outdoor pond like yours (and mine)
Interesting. What reason did they give?
@@homegrowngarden just said it wasn’t suitable, suggested I just use it for a water garden and forget the fish. Where did you get your info from?
@@barabas13 Oh do you mean specifically because it’s a metal tank?
@@homegrowngarden
No, mine is a large fully lined half barrel, maybe they just didn’t want to sell me any fish today?
@@barabas13 maybe it’s due to the fish and space. I chose these because they won’t outgrow their pond. There’s a general rule that for every inch of fish you should have 1 gallon of water. Irn bru, Nessie, fishy mcfishface, Jock and wee dram. Och aye lassie!
Oh yeah...and Frazer.... " we're doomed!".
My family has clan Gordon roots so how about Gordon? {You've probably have named them already)
Hamish, Dougie, MacBeth, Tam and Heather
Subscribed done
Morag?
Now I want medaka fish ☹
Isla. Skye.

Boys: Hamish, Archie, William, Brodie, Angus. Girls: Eilidh, Morag, Isla, Elspeth, Ailsa.
Well, at least three of them should be MacDougall, MacNab and Mackay.

Lovely fish. I hope cats or birds aren't drawn to the pond as it hasn't got any protection against predators.
Big Yin (Billy connolly), Lulu, Gordon (Ramsay), Ewan (Mcgregor), Karen (Gillian) .
Hopefully the birds or frogs won't take a liking to them.
My only concern with this project is that they might get eaten by the wild birds!!
hamish . kenneth . garreth . arron . errin. connie .
What about ego centric names like Elon, Elizabeth, Donald and Adolf?
I buy your rubberboots
Imaging recording your self and talking to a camera for random people to watch for your own verification 🤣
This... this... is a steel box. A small steel box.
Did they all survive in the poly tunnel over winter?
