Iv had fish for nearly 50 years and I can still geek out on everyone of you're videos 👍👍
Right now I only keep ricefish because of their ease of raising and keeping, their prolific breeding and can live in almost any type of environment. These guys don't get as much love as they should! If you can find them, I highly recommend you give them a shot!
Elyza, thank you so much. Great to see your content. I bought 10 Medakas from you around 1.5 years ago, it was delayed in the airmail and I was so shocked to see when they arrived, they were doing fine! Such hardy little beauties. I've since bred many more, got some nice colors and patterns, currently going for a golden + iridescent (from the platinum) scales and it looks stunning both on side profile and top.
Finally!! An episode entirely devoted to Ricefish! Many many thanks for featuring Eliza’s Oryzias collection, they are amazing. I also have Daisy Blues along with Thai Dwarf Ricefish, and 8 varieties of Medaka.
What a great video. I just discovered these fish today. I bought two because of their personalities, calm nano fish that explored rather than shoaled. Their look was simple like pond minnows, but with beautiful blue green iridescent eyes. When I got home and went online what a surprise! Bred for hundreds of years, over 200 domesticated variations, can live in brackish as well as fresh water, and tolerant of a range of temperature from 3 - 42° C, incredible! Mine are in a well planted tank with cherry shrimp. Thanks again, your video was a joy (and I'll look for Bug Buffet).
You need to keep them in a group of at least 10. So buy some more, they will be happier! A
I appreciate these videos so much! They're so interesting and informative and it's so nice to see people who have poured so much love and time into their fish get some recognition.
I'm always thrilled to see ricefish videos. I have a 15 gal mini-pond in my back yard with about 18 platinums in them. They haven't started breeding, but I'm hoping they will next spring (if not sooner).
You ,don't know how useful this video has been to me....thank you so much ❤❤❤❤
It's really amazing how well spawning mops serve. Just made one 2 days ago and it's already covered with eggs.
so glad you are doing regular content again. i hope that your shop is doing well though. appreciate thats taken alot of your focus :)
Once again . . . thank you Elyza for sharing your fish room, knowledge and experience. And thank you, Nick for bringing it to us.
I've been waiting for this video since the last one where you mentioned helping keep the ricefish for the aquarium show! I also never knew Eliza was behind hand picked aquatics - how cool! I've been eyeing some of the miyuki ricefish for ages
This was so helpful. I had Golden Ricefish, years ago. Where I live now, it's hard to find certain fish. I just by chance and luck picked up some "Blue Sparkle", 4 females and 1 male. They've been breeding every day, but I've never tried to raise the fry. Thanks for this video!
Just grabbed some of these from the last auction in qld. Got a 65l filterless tank outside and letting some plants establish to give breeding them a go.
If i can visit Australia some day ill definitely meet you n visit both fish rooms😍😍😍❤
Breed it personally and the rice fish are amazing but I hated waiting so many days for eggs to hatch. In my case it was 12-18. But other than that it is an amazing little nano fish.
I got my blue platinum medaka in today and I love them . What a beautiful little fish . I was under the impression they needed green water to live in for some reason . They do not they require a neutral ph nice ro water
Yess!!! I've been waiting for a rice fish breeding video thank you. I'm planning on getting a couple Daysie's Blue ricefish
Always love watching your channel always pools of knowledge to gain thank you
Great video by both of you, I'm still yet to be sold on Ricefish, as a fish keeper I know I should like them but to be honest they don't do anything for me, still I guess they have their place in the hobby, I just hope with the water parameters they can handle they don't become a pest in future, I'd suggest if keeping them in a pond that we make sure those ponds don't overflow into our waterways, I don't think they would be as bad as Livebearers but the thought still worries me, I'd still prefer to keep natives in a pond, I guess they are cool for beginners being so hardy, maybe I'll have to try some one day they may grow on me, I hope this comment didn't upset anyone that loves them just something to think about, if you get sick of them always try and return them to your local pet store, it may be a cool project to do a biotope on them down the track Nick and Elyza 🙂
Once you aim for breeding the rarer colors & patterns, they are very similar to Koi & fancy guppies. Patterns & colors are almost unlimited.
@@SilverforceX I'd probably go more for the wild type myself, but in saying that I do love guppies and Koi, I may look into what their habitat looks like and try them one day in a biotope aquarium, it's one of those things each to their own, some people might say some of our natives are boring and then salivate over these where I find them much nicer, there is a fish for everyone 🙂
There's over 500 colors and varieties.
I've never understood why rice fish aren't more popular in the aquarium industry. With how easy they are to breed you could select breed and gets range of colours.
I think it’s the name. Ricefish sounds like a feeder fish or something. Nothing sounds cool or exotic about their name
@@SupermanBBmedaka
Because the name is "ricefish" its kinda weird for some ppl who r new to the hobby.
@@SupermanBB medaka is a pretty cool name though
It could be that they are only native in certain areas and its not widely sold in other countries
A very interesting video. I have 6 blue daisy's, every day they give me a lot of eggs. In a week 80-100 eggs. U nice fish.
That lady is sooo cool
Thank you both!
Aw love this channel
I’ve never even seen these on sale. I should probably track down a few and check them out 🤔
Hi from Singapore! I keep rice fish on my balcony..gold lame, champagne lame, sunrise halfmoons...
*important note:* when she said ricefish can do well in temps around 0, she's means Celcius not Fahrenheit
32 degrees F
Even after watching this video I felt "it can't possibly be that easy". But 2 weeks ago I bought 3 fish (1 male, 2 female) from my local shop and I now have 30 viable eggs. I'll have thousands by the end of the year if I continue like this.
HI Elyza can you show us your outdoor ponds plz ? 😃
Very cool. Do you have to pull the eggs or will they community breed? Thanks for sharing.
My question is, with mop spawning fish, why do breeders remove the eggs from the mops as opposed to have multiple mops and just plop the berried mop in the rearing tank?
my best guess is so that they 1; 15:22 know how many eggs they have, and 2; can remove bad eggs.
Hey mate got any updates yom your pelcos hahe they bred especially the zebras
Ricefish are the ultimate fish
are there any updates on the corydora eques?
Thought about getting bug buffet in the UK? Let's get in contact
I recently got some adult medaka, how long after they are in a new environment will they breed? I have them in a heavily planted pond. Thanks
Don’t forget to inspect ur rice fish as it is easy to breed. But u need to be sure there is no deformity. As in bent spine, missing diesel fins etc. As u don’t want to keep keep those lineage going. U only would want healthy Medaka rice fish
Can they survive on the spawning mop with the parents or do you have to separate them?
I believe they seperate them to increase the chances of them surviving. In a seperate tank you can also treat the water with paraguard or methylene blue to ensure the eggs don't get fungus growing on them.
Which Oryzias species and Pseudomugil can live outside in ponds at winter please? I know only Oryzias Latipes, is there any Pseudomugil that can live outside at winter?
is it just green wool you are using?
Do you know or have experience with breeding Black Neon Tetras?
Can rice fish fry eat only flakes or pellets? Or you really need a brine shrimp?
I tried to video some of my blacks spawning. Female with a cluster while the male sidled up to her side.
how do you get all the dye out of the yarn clusters bc i have tried like 10 different types of yarn and they all bleed green dye
What temp is best for breeding?
What are the plants that look like underwater pine trees
Give me the info to purchase some rice fish, they're so precious.
14:06 what kinda orange/red fish is that?
You never got a response! It looks like a red neon blue eye rainbow fish.
The worm thing put me off completely 😂
Please can you do a breeding video for chilli Rasboras
Love medaka
I’ve always found guppies & swordtail the easiest to breed due to live birth. Fish eggs can be so fragile depending on species. I remember as a kid buying swordtails from the pet store not realizing they were ready to pop. The next day fry were swimming around the tank. I was hooked since then. Great video. Breeding any type of animal is very interesting.
Wish they were available in my city
Hard to find medaka in WA 😢
I’ve been sold on these for a while. Finally about to set up and scape a 70L. Heavily planted, and with Dragonwood & Seiryu stone. Will get 6 of these guys and just let them do their thing. If they breed, great, I’ll just be happy to have them. Just don’t know which ones, either Gold, or Daisy’s….
Great video by the way 👍
Do they eat eggs after laying or they eat fry
They don't eat eggs but will eat fry if they get the chance. Not saying none will survive with adults, but you have much better odds of success if you separate them.
@@GBfromTennessee so like guppies i still have to provide hiding spaces to increase survival rates :)
Ty for help ^_^
I want to see more Catching fish in the wild videos. Pls do some more of those. I am a big fan of them.
😢
Superb
Update on my comment one month later. My medaka went being productive until I added a sponge filter but I have 26 eggs I counted today some had eyes already
I raise and breed medaka rice fish, I recently started to notice less egg production to the point it's hardly any. Could floaters dying off make them feel vulnerable and be the reason they aren't producing as much eggs?
It's the season
Seasonal, definitely. They breed more in Springtime.
Fire fishes . I really want to buy them. But unfortunately I am not in your shipping locations mate. I live in India. Hope u expand ur buildings world wide 🙏
They will put by my door. I don't worry to much here because it is secure. We have a fence and gate.😊
I have since 1 year medakas but i never get breed i dont understand why
🐠🐟🐡🐬🐳 Nice vid!
Green water is best for fry....
Will the parents eat their young? 15:22
Yes if there's too many, they self-regulate population.
👍🏻👍🏻
💯
I have Daisy Blues and they put guppies to shame when it comes to being prolific.
Pls breed mollies
I love my mollies
They breed themselves
Yea i had four 3 months ago now i have more than 100
❤👍
You never mentioned how long they take to hatch
To add, in regards to fertilization, I have witnessed their mating rituals many times. The males will follow females that are ready to release eggs, and they are quite persistent. The males do a little display, they flash their pelvic fins at the females to signal. If the female accepts, they briefly come together and the male fertilizes the eggs as it exits the female. It is not good to have more males than females, since the males are extremely aggressive during mating season and will chase and pester the females non-stop causing fatigue.
I have some females releasing their eggs. Does it mean the eggs left on their bodies are fertilised?
Rice fish are so expensive in the US
And there are barely any people who sell them
❤hi
The males fertilise the eggs externally...
They're not more popular bc they're ridiculously expensive for what they are! They're basically feeder fish costing the same as Nano Tank feature fish like Killifish, Gouramis, loaches, Bristle Noses etc 🙄
this might be the worlds most boring UA-cam question.
What is that shelving/racking made of? and what is that nice finish on the outside of the shelve edges??
🤣🤣
Rack it from Bunnings, paint is called hammer tone.
I never understood why they're so popular. There's nothing special about them. They're just small fish that are found in rice patties...
That’s your negative opinion, no reason to even post such nonsense.
@@MacJank7 it's public domain...so....
@@midnull6009 no one cares what you think gary
I agree
@@MacJank7As much reason as to post this video or your own, useless comment.
