I've been getting lots of questions about my Japanese Rice Fish (also known as Medaka here in Japan) as well as requests to show them more on video so here is a simple care guide.
Rice Fish are probably one of the hardiest and easy to care for fish in the aquarium hobby so it's really hard to go wrong with them. They can be kept indoors or outdoors, can handle cold or hot temperatures, and breed really easily.
I really hope to make more enjoyable and educational videos about Rice Fish and hope to keep more varieties in the future. I'd also love to do some Medaka farm/breeder tours but I have to search for them first.
    Thanks for watching, Ryo

I found some sparkly silver-blue medaka near me in the US and I was pumped! They were outrageously expensive and hard to find online. I have them in a cystal vase with loads of plants. When I can I stick it in an open window for direct sun, they start breeding so I think they like it. Thanks again for your videos, never would've known these guys existed without them!

I love your medaka videos, you are the best youtuber when it comes to providing information about them!
I think this is the best fish to have, since I like natural things, this set of fish and plants is really natural, no need of artificial things.
I keep gambusia like that since I cant find medaka where I live, but they are not colorful at all and are really shy, so they only try to hide :/
I use the aquatic umbrella plant to clean the water, its really good for the job.

I just started keeping medaka for the first time this year. The climate is more extreme where I live. Winters are cold enough that ponds will freeze solid. So I have to bring my ricefish indoors.
In regards to higher temperatures - during the summer, my ricefish tolerated the higher temperatures, but if the water temperature was above 78F/25C, the eggs would fungus before the fry could hatch. Next summer, I plan to set up the outdoor ricefish pond in a more shaded area.

@@RyoWatanabee I have regular white clouds with neon tetras in a 29 gallon. My wife was worried about the gold white clouds being outside over the winter, so I moved them in to the 29 as well. I’ll move them back outside in the spring and see if they’ll breed for me.

I have a river inspired 20 gallon tank that is empty other than 3 young female guppies and some ottos. Looking into some peaceful fish I could add and really wanting to add some of these! Simple yet beautiful fish! The only downside is there are no local fish stores by me that carry these so I'm looking to online alternatives.

I have watched this video so many times. It's almost pond season where I live in the US, near Seattle and I'm going to finally set up my first mini-pond. I'm curious, how much do those pond containers range in price in Japan? They always seem really expensive here & it's hard to find them without drainage holes for plants.

Nice video! I've been looking for information about rice fish and you delivered the things I just need. My only concern is that, the fish seems to like colder temperature and in where I live, the temperature goes constantly warm throughout the year (around 25-30 C) so I'm not sure I can keep them healthily compared to guppies or gambusia. Thank you for making this video and cheers!
