I think "you don't need a penny, just to hang around" means they're playing for free on the street corner, so anyone can hang out and listen. "But if you've got a nickel, won't you lay your money down" means if you have the means, please throw some money in the guitar case for the band. So if you're struggling yourself, don't worry about it, but if you're not struggling, please help the band out.
I grew up on the great music of the 60's-70's. CCR has always been one of my favorites. They don't have a bad song! John Fogerty has one of the most unique & recognizable voices around. All their songs are great - "Proud Mary", "Born On The Bayou", "Bad Moon Rising", "Lodi", "Green River", "Commotion", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Down On The Corner", "Fortunate Son", "Cotton Fields", "Midnight Special", "Travelin' Band", "Who'll Stop The Rain", "Up Around the Bend", "Run Through The Jungle", "Lookin' Out My Back Door", "Long As I Can See the Light", "Suzie Q", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "I Put A Spell On You", "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" etc.
I always liked their minimalist approach. Nothing in the songs that isn't needed, and everything that IS needed. There's a where the art lies...finding that perfect balance. Or, maybe I'm just full of BS! Whatever the reason, CCR is one of the greats.
Yes, and "Proud Mary," "Born on The Bayou," and "Green River" have to be played by every little triflin' band that thinks they are ANYBODY here in Louisiana. John Fogerty ran a great scam on the rubes in California who thought he was actually writing genuine Louisiana swamp music. So it became known as "Swamp Pop" and every two-bit bar band here plays that junk along with Van Morrison's horrible "Brown Eyed Girl" --- which somehow got transmogrified into "swamp music," too. "Long As I Can See the Light" is a GREAT Creedence song, OTOH. It's more da blues. And "It Came Out of The Sky" is a really cool humorous rock song that takes some serious punches at some political issues of the day. You gotta study your history to "get it."
When you're ready for more of that down home country rock from CCR, check out "Midnight Special", "Lodi", "Don't Look Now", and "Lookin' Out My Backdoor" along with many others.
Love John Fogerty. Midnight Special was written by Hudie Ledbetter, (Ledbelly) while in prison, CK it out, Ledbelly also wrote Gallows Pole, and many others
This song was on an album entitled "Willie and the Poor Boys." The cover photo of the album shows the guys in CCR playing the instruments of the fictional band Willie and the Poor Boys which include a harmonica, a washtub/broomstick one string bass, a washboard and a guitar. There was a song on the album entitled "Poor Boy Shuffle" which was the result of the band playing those instruments. That one never made it to being a radio hit, but was interesting, nonetheless.
Every CCR song is amazing! I was playing my CCR playlist grilling some ribs and chicken last week and my granddaughter was jamming along. She asked me which is my favorite song, I said All of them.
What a BADDASS song this is! I believe they are from California...definitely have a hint of that Southern Rock flavor, but with their own unique sound. Great reaction, YA'LL!! God bless.
Jon Fogerty is a giant of music. You should check out his solo songs Centerfield and Rock’n’Roll Girls. After leaving CCR he refused to sing any of the songs that he wrote because the studio got the money. He was a stalwart for standing up for musicians rights.
Creedence members were from California, this song sort of nails the idea of Louisiana idea/ sound of street musicians n New Orleans French Quarter, which is how Louis Armstrong started out a s a child. CCR leader John Fogerty was a genius song writer. At one time many nicknamed the band the best garage band that ever lived.
I Love CCR... My dad listened to them a lot when I was a kid. They have a lot of great songs. I heard it through the grapevine, midnight special, cotton fields and I put a spell on you.. Many more. ✌️🤘😊
Great band! This track is off the album "Willie and the Poor Boys" I brought a vinyl copy back in 1969 when it was released. I still have the record and it still gets played.
#CCR Thanks guys for playing all these songs I grew up with! I played their albums all the time & even remember playing them in a jukebox when going out to eat. Lol! I'm starting to feel old, but I still love a jukebox! Wish I had one! Lol!
Lyrics: Early in the evenin' just about supper time Over by the courthouse they're starting to unwind Four kids on the corner trying to bring you up Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp -CHORUS- Down on the corner Out in the street Willy and the Poor Boys are playin' Bring a nickel, tap your feet Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile Blinky thumps the gut bass and solos for a while Poor Boy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo And Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo CHORUS x2 You don't need a penny just to hang around But if you've got a nickel, won't you lay your money down? Over on the corner there's a happy noise People come from all around to watch the magic boy CHORUS x4
Oh man.... so many great songs from these guys and this is a classic! Run through the jungle Looking out my back door Have you ever seen the rain? Bad moon risingif you haven't done any of those please do!
A very enjoyable reaction from an all-time great band! Next CCR song to react to: their *_long, album version_* of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". They took Marvin Gaye's classic song and respectfully transformed it CCR style. ua-cam.com/video/ixqofv-Oi74/v-deo.html
All rock is Southern. CCR was from California, but they'd fit in, in Louisianna. Gregg Allman said the phrase 'southern rock' is like saying 'rock rock'. This was based on the roots of the genre. Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and all the early stars of rock music came from the south. Though CCR was from out west, their sound was like it was recorded in New Orleans.
John Fogerty is truly a great musician, songwriter, singer, one of the greatest ever from the USA, extremely talented. It's ashamed that they fell apart the way they did because of jealousy and selfishness from the other members of the band, but that's a common thing. It happened to The Bee Gees too. They were great as a band but John was essentially the band and he had an obsession with making great songs. He's in my top 10 greatest ever. Just think of how great they really could have been had they run into the right people supporting them, and if they hadn't have had internal issues of jealousy. The problem is that the other members didn't care about the music but rather the money, they also did not want to do what was best for the group, which was let John run the show entirely, they were more selfish about it and they wanted to do their own thing, but they didn't have his talent and ability, the last album they made proved that, but they did leave an incredible impression with the music that they were able to make.
Yes CCR did Politucal Protest songs too like Fortunate Son" which was a Protest of the Vietnam War ! John Fogerty wrote/sang about things around him and the times
I've been a huge fan since the start with Suzie Q in 68. They had hit after hit after hit back then. It was so cool waiting for their next song to be released. Also the boss jocks , deejays added much on the radio. So fortunate to have grown up then. The 60s are definitely my favorite decade for music.
Another great CCR tune! Still my favorite group and I'm listening to music over 60 years. There from CA, but their sound is swamp rock. I put a Spell on You and The Night Time is the Right Time may be my favorites.
CCR recorded so many great tunes and Fogerty managed to relates his lyrics to the times as well. I.E. Fortunate Son, Run through the Jungle etc... if you haven't checked out those 2 runes give em a listen
You may have heard it in a Walgreens commercial - they've been using it for years now. It's also been covered a few times. When I looked it up, it said Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne covered it on an album they did together. What? I've gotta go listen to that... my brain just can't imagine it. lol
The lyrics are about the members of the street band The Poor Boys and the instruments they play: the harp (harmonica), the gut bass, the Kalamazoo (guitar), the kazoo.
Many of their songs are short, but not all of them. When you do more CCR reactions, please check carefully and make sure you're getting the full version of the song. Some were cut short for radio at the time, etc.
They sing about those coner performances.,using homemade instruments. The gut bass, washtub with a board and a string attached,a harp which was what we called a french harp, though its really a harmonica.A kazoo and whatever instruments they could find.Fogerty even sings with a Louisiana accent and that southern twang at times.
El Cerrito, California. San Francisco Bay Area. My friend's dad went to high school with John Fogerty and had them play in his living room. Nice party band! Lol! But I'm so impressed with his Gospel and Blues influence. He must have had some record collection. ;)
Hey guys, thanks for bringing the good music and good vibes. You two make my days brighter, something a lot of us could use. Since you dig the Southern rock you should do more Lynyrd Skynyrd. I suggest: I Ain't The One Call Me The Breeze Gimme Three Steps Molly Hatchet is another good one. Try: Flirtin' With Disaster Whiskey Man Gator Country (where praises his own home of Florida and trash talks the other Southern rocker's homes. 😄 Although he mentions Skynyrd when trashing Alabama because of the song Sweet Home Alabama, Skynyrd is actually a Florida band too).

Matt, not to mention rollin' dice in the alley behind the pool hall is not a stereotype, lol.
This is how I have always heard/understood this pair of lines. Thanks for sharing!
This band is AWESOME! Please do more of their music. “I Put a Spell on You” is a great one, but all of their stuff is great!🌺✌️
Long version. Those short versions of all the great songs, just doesn't cut it. :D
Yes Miss Debbie, YES!
Soundtrack of the Vietnam War
This was the first Credence song I heard, and I was sold for life! 71 and still loving their sound.
I grew up on the great music of the 60's-70's. CCR has always been one of my favorites. They don't have a bad song! John Fogerty has one of the most unique & recognizable voices around. I agree 😊🎵🎼
he is one of my fav pickers and had one of my fav sounding guitars
I always liked their minimalist approach. Nothing in the songs that isn't needed, and everything that IS needed. There's a where the art lies...finding that perfect balance. Or, maybe I'm just full of BS! Whatever the reason, CCR is one of the greats.
there songs will never die
Grew up listening to Creedence. They have a southern sound. They even sang a great song called Born on the Bayou but they're actually from California.
You can never miss with CCR. I grew up with their music!

my fav is It Came Out Of The Sky
"Someday Never Comes" 🥰
Love John Fogerty. Midnight Special was written by Hudie Ledbetter, (Ledbelly) while in prison, CK it out, Ledbelly also wrote Gallows Pole, and many others
Lodi is a fantastic song, but very different from what you have come to expect from them
This song was on an album entitled "Willie and the Poor Boys." The cover photo of the album shows the guys in CCR playing the instruments of the fictional band Willie and the Poor Boys which include a harmonica, a washtub/broomstick one string bass, a washboard and a guitar. The man could tell a story..you can see it.
Every CCR song is amazing! I was playing my CCR playlist grilling some ribs and chicken last week and my granddaughter was jamming along. She asked me which is my favorite song, I said All of them.
dancing music if i ever heard it. thanks for the reaction smiles and love
1969, 10 years old with a battery powered radio in the bedroom listening to this on AM radio with my brother. Can picture it like it was yesterday.
Great band with so many Great songs!!! Love the reviews keep them going.
So many great BANDS in the late 60's and the entire 70's. Way too many to list.
This song has been used in a number of different Walgreens commercials, which is likely why it sounds familiar to BJ
"Run Through the Jungle" is my favorite but this is my second favorite! Y'all are so brave to hit this kind of music. Shout out to you both!
CCR is From Northern California Bay Area but everyone thinks they are from the South
I would say, to me ,they have a Southern sound with a side of Swamp :) Please explore more! Keep On Rockin'
CCR has so many classic songs that have been played all over the place, radio, movies, television.
Also his album Blue Moon Swamp, which is fantastic.
They definitely DO have a southern sound, but they were actually from El Cerrito California. I have always loved CCR!
Lodi must be YOUR song LOL
Up around Lodi bend!
They are a great classic southern rock band. Yall probably heard their music on movies, shows and commercials. Or at grocery stores. lol
CCR was huge in Canada as well. I still play all their songs.
YES,MY FAVORITE BAND,REAL ROCKERS!! CCR
John Fogerty was a hit-writing machine between 1968-1972
The dude abides!!
This song describes Beale Street in Memphis.
I Love CCR... My dad listened to them a lot when I was a kid. They have a lot of great songs. I heard it through the grapevine, midnight special, cotton fields and I put a spell on you.. Many more. ✌️🤘😊
You can't go wrong with CCR! Enjoying all of your Creedence reactions. Great job.

Midnight SPECIAL great song
Great band! This track is off the album "Willie and the Poor Boys" I brought a vinyl copy back in 1969 when it was released. I still have the record and it still gets played.
Next "Born On The Bayou" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (they did justice to Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight).... you won't be disappointed!
You are right about I heard through the grapevine! Even if you can’t dance you can’t standstill listening to it!
Played this one on the jukebox at the campgrounds when I was 12... Back then you got 3 songs for a quarter! The good ole days! lol
My top 5 bands of ALL TIME!!! Can’t help but love CCR:)
#CCR Thanks guys for playing all these songs I grew up with! I played their albums all the time & even remember playing them in a jukebox when going out to eat. Lol! I'm starting to feel old, but I still love a jukebox! Wish I had one! Lol!
Lyrics:
Early in the evenin' just about supper time
Over by the courthouse they're starting to unwind
Four kids on the corner trying to bring you up
Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp
-CHORUS-
Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willy and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel, tap your feet
Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile
Blinky thumps the gut bass and solos for a while
Poor Boy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo
And Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo
CHORUS x2
You don't need a penny just to hang around
But if you've got a nickel, won't you lay your money down?
Over on the corner there's a happy noise
People come from all around to watch the magic boy
CHORUS x4
Thanks. It wasn't until the internet and headphones that I had any idea what most of the words were
@John Fischer something something people just got to smile.
Something something solos for a while
Oh man.... so many great songs from these guys and this is a classic!
Run through the jungle
Looking out my back door
Have you ever seen the rain?
Bad moon risingif you haven't done any of those please do!
Music of my youth! Great band and greater music!
Theyre even better live
They have a bunch of awesome tunes
A very enjoyable reaction from an all-time great band! Next CCR song to react to: their *_long, album version_* of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". They took Marvin Gaye's classic song and respectfully transformed it CCR style.

I luv CCR!👏😋
So glad y'all are checking out these bands. Iconic mainstays. Timeless sounds.
All rock is Southern. CCR was from California, but they'd fit in, in Louisianna.

Yes CCR did Politucal Protest songs too like Fortunate Son" which was a Protest of the Vietnam War ! John Fogerty wrote/sang about things around him and the times
When this song came out The Corner was where 3 neighboring towns joined. Kids from the 3 towns hung out at The Corner and the song was like an anthem.
"Molina" and "the working man" are a must listen. My favorites by ccr
Can never go wrong with CCR
This is another one of those bands that I've heard a lot of, but don't think I've ever heard a song I didn't love. Great song, great band!
Love CCR. Old swamp rock.
You can't go wrong with CCR - such a vibe and it works just as much now as it did then
They have some really good songs
This band is my mamas favorite. This music reminds me of my childhood. She will always be with me as long as I listen to this music.
I've been a huge fan since the start with Suzie Q in 68. They had hit after hit after hit back then. It was so cool waiting for their next song to be released. Also the boss jocks , deejays added much on the radio. So fortunate to have grown up then. The 60s are definitely my favorite decade for music.
such a happy upbeat song. I loved your reaction.
We need more people like you both
The picture perfect band of prime Americana era. Beautiful music
Another great CCR tune! Still my favorite group and I'm listening to music over 60 years. There from CA, but their sound is swamp rock. I put a Spell on You and The Night Time is the Right Time may be my favorites.
CCR in the early 70s. What a great Band.
Good ole Southern Rock/Swamp Rock band ............ from Oakland , California.
Childhood memories with Pops and his vast taste for music
CCR recorded so many great tunes and Fogerty managed to relates his lyrics to the times as well. I.E. Fortunate Son, Run through the Jungle etc... if you haven't checked out those 2 runes give em a listen
They had a unique vibe
This song is summer to me. 🥰
You may have heard it in a Walgreens commercial - they've been using it for years now. It's also been covered a few times. When I looked it up, it said Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne covered it on an album they did together. What? I've gotta go listen to that... my brain just can't imagine it. lol
CCR forever!
Yeah CCR was definitely a hit machine!!!! 😉❤✌🏼
My mom loved ccr...had one of their songs on her funeral video.....
The lyrics are about the members of the street band The Poor Boys and the instruments they play: the harp (harmonica), the gut bass, the Kalamazoo (guitar), the kazoo.
Awesome jam yeah, use to listen to this in 7 th grade 🤘😎🤘🎤🎸
My favorite CCR song! So damn catchy! You are the first ones I’ve seen react to this.
great band tnks from brazil
Proud Mary, Lodi and heard it through the grapevine are awesome songs by this awesome band 💖💯💖💯💖💯
Credence is from El Cerrito, CA. The Duck Kee market is below San Pablo Ave in Oakland. That's where they were pitching coins...DOWN ON THE CORNER!
Many of their songs are short, but not all of them. When you do more CCR reactions, please check carefully and make sure you're getting the full version of the song. Some were cut short for radio at the time, etc.
This is my favorite CCR song thanks for reacting to it. You should check out more CCR if you haven't.
CCR were an iconic band at the time never a bad song on their albums which was unusual for the time .
CCR - LOVE THEM ! 🔥🔥 I also vote for “I Put a Spell on You”
They put out some great music
CCR was actually from the San Jose area in California but the Fogertys had relatives in the south.
CCR just makes you grin and dance...Be it a slow grind or a flat out boogie...swamp rock to R&B....
CCR music is in so many movies and just played everywhere
Thanks
They sing about those coner performances.,using homemade instruments. The gut bass, washtub with a board and a string attached,a harp which was what we called a french harp, though its really a harmonica.A kazoo and whatever instruments they could find.Fogerty even sings with a Louisiana accent and that southern twang at times.
Oh yeah……great tune.❤️🎼❤️🤘😎🔥
We danced to this song in Junior High, great groove. 👍 👍👍
To put it all in context it's the soundtrack for the Vietnam War and much more check out Midnight Special
Legendary band
Dope reaction and song
So GOOOOOOOOOOD! Thanks
Great song! Love your reaction!
El Cerrito, California. San Francisco Bay Area. My friend's dad went to high school with John Fogerty and had them play in his living room. Nice party band! Lol! But I'm so impressed with his Gospel and Blues influence. He must have had some record collection. ;)
Used to throw some good shapes when this was released. Loved the band!
There's a reference to a guy playin' "on his Kalamazoo" which is an old guitar brand (I don't think they are made anymore).
I've always took it to be the old full name of a kazoo!
@@rickkane7913 I looked it up and stand corrected, they are still in business. Of course they are located in Kalamazoo Michigan.
Hey guys, thanks for bringing the good music and good vibes. You two make my days brighter, something a lot of us could use.
Since you dig the Southern rock you should do more Lynyrd Skynyrd. I suggest:
I Ain't The One
Call Me The Breeze
Gimme Three Steps
Molly Hatchet is another good one. Try:
Flirtin' With Disaster
Whiskey Man
Gator Country
(where praises his own home of Florida and trash talks the other Southern rocker's homes. 😄 Although he mentions Skynyrd when trashing Alabama because of the song Sweet Home Alabama, Skynyrd is actually a Florida band too).
John Fogerty the lead singer also wrote and sang (Proud Mary) Tina Turner had a big hit on it
