I heard this back in 1986 here in Finland, when I was 16yr old. And my soul was in the Bayou after that moment...one of the greatest band of all time ! Cheers!
JTK !!! U R Sooo Correct ?? CCR Is One Of The Greatest Bands Of Alll Time !!!! No Doubt About That !! I’ve Been Listening To This Band Since The Late 60’s
I remember in 1969 as a 19 year old kid loading our brown water navy 512 (PBR ) for patrol on the Go Cong River in Vietnam while listening to this song . Some things you just never forget.
You can’t confuse John’s voice or guitar playing with anyone else. My parents took me to Woodstock when I was 12. They didn’t even get on stage until after midnight. I was one of a few people still awake. I was so miserable..cold, wet and covered in mud. Playing with a few other kids was fun and made the time go by faster. Looking back I feel so lucky to have been there. It’s something I will never forget.
Southern Rock, there isn't a section at the record store as swamp rock. When your talking about the Louisiana swamps, it has a feel to it, like if you hear traffic you think city, and you can describe some Southern Rock as swamp rock, swampy feel, whatever. But the genre is Southern Rock, all the way from Cali!
CCR is famous for their legendary "swamp boogie" soundscape. But what makes their sound so amazing is that no one from the band is from the bayou or even the south! All four of them are from northern California. The vibe is a complete fabrication and one of the greatest creative feats in classic rock. Combined with their songwriting and performace chops, they are quite possibly the best American rock band of all time.
I grew up in a small town near Tahoe. In the 90's I worked as a life guard at the local pool and in the summer one of the school teachers worked there too as a life guard for extra money. I loved CCR (still do) and had it playing one day on the pool speakers. This teacher told me he and his friends in the 70's would go and watch CCR all the time in the bay area before they got famous. Back then, no internet, I thought he was totally full of shit. So I went and researched it and found that CCR was from San Francisco and not Louisiana blew my head apart.
This is one of my favorite songs of all-time cuz that dude's voice could sand a hardwood floor and chew through a cue ball. It's amazing that band was from California and he was able to sing like he was from Bayou Country through and through. Sensational song
Oh , PS ,,, if you like the swamp music , Check out Tony Joe White doing Polk Salad Annie , Bayou Woman , Hootchie Woman , and Gumbo John . Also a funny one is ( yes this whole thing is the title ) They Caught the Devil and Put him in Jail in Eudora Arkansas .
"Cotton Fields" is a traditional American folk song from the southern states and CCR does it right! Really terrific harmonies. "When I was an itty bitty baby my mama would rock me in the cradle in them old cotton fields back home!" We used to sing that in grade 7 and 8 music classes, and did we ever love it back in 1971 and 72! You two need to pick up a copy of John Fogerty in concert in LA in his 2005 DVD called "The Long Road Home." He finally was persuaded to let it fly with all his CCR hits and this concert is FUN with a capital F from one end to the other!
If you do any more CCR, be sure and do LONG versions. Some of them were cut down to be played on radio. "Susi Q" for one. "Heard It Through The Grapevine " for another. Be sure to listen to "I Put A Spell On You." And "Ramble Tamble. " Their list is long.
I agree and I have had the same issue with songs from others. Sometimes they got it perfect the1st time and sometimes live is better and sometimes it doesn't matter. it just depends on the song and with CCR you are absolutely right.
The amazing thing about CCR's music and John Fogerty's voice is that they were all from Cali, El Cerrito in the San Francisco Bay Area! Hear That Cow Bell?
This is probably my favorite ccr song but they're catalog is extensive and they're are tons of awesome jams! You guys should jump into a ccr marathon lol
Hi guys, so glad you enjoyed this song, CCR is such a great vibe. Other really good suggestions from them are "Green River", Midnight Special" "Proud Mary" and "Lookin' Out My Backdoor". And thank you for the time you put into these videos.
Woodstock took place in 1969 over a 3-day period, and featured 32 bands/performers including, amongst others: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, CCR, Arlo Guthrie, Santana, Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Blood, Sweat and Tears... With this level of talent all in one place, no one was billed as the headliner.
Seen Fogerty twice as a standalone act. First time in mid 2000s, and second time just pre-pandemic. They guy still rocks it like a badass. What an icon.
It sounds like home to me. Our only rule was to be back by dinner time. We could wander a very large area climbing small hills and swinging on grapevines. My mom taught us that. It's fun until it's not.
When these CCR songs played in clubs, the dance floors were packed and people were just sweating by the end of their songs. Their songs made us feel alive and wanting to show we felt.
Never had a bad tune! This one was my favorite, being from Louisiana. But CCR is like the Eagles, as each and every song had a groove that called out through a tales from the crypt type vibe!
Hi. Glad you got to this one. My dad Tom and Uncle John created some iconic songs. This is DEFINITELY 1..... for a rocker, check out Traveling Band !! JEFF FOGERTY
There are two California bands that IMO are "the most southern bands from outside the south": Credence Clearwater Revival, and Little Feat. I have no idea how they got that swampy and funky all the way out there on the West Coast, but they sound like they were born and bred here. Whatever is the southern equivalent of "an invite to the cookout," they both earned one.
CCR- simply the best, IMO. Loved them since they first came on the scene. John Fogerty was the brains behind CCR- lead singer, lead guitarist, wrote their songs. He's a rock god!
The last verse, the best.is missing. Wish I were on the bayou, rolling with some Cajun queen, just a chooglin' on down to New Orleans. 80 year old La. Cajun here, living on the Bayous of S. Louisiana looking for a Cajun queen.
John Fogerty has mentioned in interviews that his mom connected him with the music that inspired his career. A Stephen Foster children's record she gave him when he was three. She also listened to the music that was brought to California from the South during the depression and from Oklahoma during the dust bowl years.
Best swamp song by a band from the San Francisco area.A tasty one is Run through the jungle. You want some serious southern?Tony Joe Whites "Polk Salad Annie"
You chose en epic and very powerful song which is my personal favourite of CCR's songs. I love both Fogerty's voice and especially his guitar work. Even if you wouldn't react to another CCR song I recommend you listening to both Cotton Fields and Someday Never Comes. These 3 tracks are my top favourites of CCR.
One of my fav. CCR songs. Fogerty's voice does it every time. Can never drag me away from the bayou - mudbugs, critters and all :-) On another note, one day ya'll gonna have to get into some Zydeco music lol
I absolutely LOVE both of you! I forgot this song and how much I love it! I want to thank you for your reactions, your videos are helping me build and update my playlists. Keep it going! You guys are GREAT! 👍
So right, B.J...a fella from Calif. doin' the kind of sound that screams good-time southern rock?? Fogerty had what every great songwriter needs..Great Imagination.
I was there at Woodstock when CCR performed this. It was late in the evening, people were falling asleep from a meandering Grateful Dead set -- then CCR came on, opening with this song, and people began rising up, like spirits from the earth, moving, dancing to the rhythm and beat. It was kind of fantastical. The scene stays with me.
If you like "swamp rock," have you listened to Tony Joe White? He passed away a few years ago but during his career he put together a huge body of great music. Probably best known for "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia." There's a video version of TJW with Johnny Cash too. Check him out - you might like what you hear. Thanks as always for another great reaction!
I've got to agree with another commenter and put in my vote for you guys to check out their song "Heard It Through The Grapevine" (the full version). CCR are the real deal!
They say his voice and the sound takes you back to Louisiana. If you can relate to it and get the sound and the feeling just right you do feel like you’re somewhere else. They’re from El Cerrito, CA and this song was recorded in LA. Cool.
Probably Credence's most popular song. These guys are from Northern California, outside San Fransico, so they are not from the south as a lot of people assume. Great song with some funk to it. Credence started back in 1968. One of the all-time great "Classic Rock" era Bands.
10:02 Yeah I agree. They helped define the Southern Rock genre. Along with other legendary bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, etc... You could make a case for many bands being in that genre like ZZ Top, BLS, Kid Rock, Charlie Daniels Band, Marshall Tucker Band, etc. But they are more on the outskirts. CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd top the list for me but others include: Black Oak Arkansas, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers, Outlaws, Blackberry Smoke and more. The influence of Southern Rock stretches out to many, even on the harder side like Corrosion of Conformity.
Old school! Bad Moon Rising is my favorite from them. Definitely a Halloween jam with no peanut butter. Btw, Asia Kitboga made an animated TV special. Please react to it on your channel. Thanks!
Believe it or leave it. These guys are from Northern California. I thought they were from the South for years (we didn't have the interwebs). Soul, grit, and truth. John Fogerty is a brilliant song writer, singer, and arranger. Timeless sound and feel. Sadly another victim of soul crushing record companies and bad contracts. They couldn't perform live under their own name and didn't really get paid until just a few years ago. They've been a staple in my music library since 1968.
Love love love CCR! These guys were amazing and funky and soulful and all around wonderful!!! “I Put a Spell on You” and “Long as I Can See the Light” are two of my favorites. John Fogarty’s voice is like heaven in a swamp! Great choice. Love your channel. Please check out Linda Ronstadt. 🌺✌️
Takes me back. 60's were great. CCR was the most popular music where I lived. AFL,NFL, ABA, NBA....walking down to the little candy store by my house with my sister.
Recently their label released a CD with their Woodstock performance. At that time (1969), Fogerty rejected it because he thought their performance wasn't up to his standards. When you hear the performance, you have to disagree with him.
CCR will always be my one my all time favorite bands! I can name some many. My mom and dad were so fortunately to grow up through some of best decades of music. My dad was born in 1935 and saw some shit. My mom was born in 1944 and would ever day after school(she went to an all girls Catholic school back than) she would would walk past America Bandstand as both my parents grew up in Philly. Dad from North Philly and Mom grew up in West Philly.
dam I love this song! My fav CCR tune. For another smokin hot fun song, "Ramble, Tamble". That's a jubilee shuffle song with some amazing energy. Parts of the song are played to a polka beat.
One of the BEST songs ever recorded! Glad you like it! Great channel, guys! As far as Woodstock goes, John Fogerty, surprisingly, felt that CCR's performance was not good enough to be documented. That is why they are not on the film. 🎸👍
Great tune! There's a couple other great ones off their 2nd album, "Graveyard Train" & "Penthouse Pauper". Y'all prolly won't get many requests for these 2 as they're not on the greatest hits album and that's all that seems to be requested by most, but definitely worth a listen..Keep Rollin🤘🏼
I was about 15 when this song first come out and was hooked from the first few bars. There was just something magical about CCR! I mean even aside from John's voice. The songs were all really pretty simple but somehow the way all the parts fit together was perfection! Ironically I think it was the ever so slight imperfections that make it "perfect". Now days most music is locked to a rigid mechanical grid and the different parts are added one at a time and polished and edited to perfection. What gives this tune (and a lot of the music of the 60's) that incredible vibe, FEEL and groove is it's essentially a recording of a jam session with all of them playing together at the same time.
Don't know how CCR got the southern rock 'n' roll sound down so well -- the band was from California, just northeast of San Francisco! They rolled on that southern river all the way to the top of the charts.
CCR cranked out a string of iconic hits in the early sixties and seventies that defined the era. That distinctive down home Southern Rock sound along with Fogerty’s vocals made them one of a kind that you just couldn’t get enough of every time they played. You really need to listen to some of John Fogerty’s solo and later music. Try “Old Man Down the Road” or “Vantz Can’t Dance” for updated but classic Fogerty.
Hey Jay and Asia , Yeah it takes me back with my dog going hunting , my dog would be ahead of me chasing jack rabbits , back when I was a teen , I'm 68 yrs old now , Everytime I hear that song it reminds me of those days , also when we use to play that song , over and over till we got it right , Damn Good Song , Thank You Asia and Jay , Your Friend from Arizona, Samuel , Stay Kool , Later
I heard this back in 1986 here in Finland, when I was 16yr old. And my soul was in the Bayou after that moment...one of the greatest band of all time ! Cheers!

That suck-you-in swamp rock - no place or sound like it. Sheer perfection.

Agreed. That sound, unbeatable.
Fogarty, California boy laying the deep south sound down! Classic group...thanks for spotlighting them!
As John Travers said: "I put a spell on you" is a must listen because it's their masterpiece remake of a great true blues song.

Their greatest song. And I don't have the vocabulary to describe Fogerty's songwriting skills and voice. Thanks for posting this.
MUST do the 11 minute studio version of "Heard it Through the Grapevine " So transcendental, it feels more like 3-4 minutes of awesomeness.
This is one of those songs that makes you emote....man I love it...
CCR are legends.
You got it right BJ. They are Californians. I recently purchased that albums and the hits collection on vinyl. Love this song.
You mean late 60s and early 70s. They weren'' t around in early 60's
John Fogerty, king of Southern rock....pride of El Cerrito, California. A true artist can capture any vibe.
My favourite CCR! ❤
Love the Reverb in these great tunes.
