A simple foam head popper for bass and panfish. Design can be scaled up or down and colors changed to fit your situation. Good luck and happy fishing!
In this video I'm using an 9ft Eagleclaw 5 weight flyrod.

I really like the fact that you went out to show the fly in action! Proof of concept as you might call it.
You seem like the most honest good man that has ever been on the water, not saying by any means you are the only one who is good and honest. I think it is a characteristic trait of a fly fishermen.
Great video! Especially loved the ending when you showed your flies in action!
Spectacular video- I am a western fisherman, but there are some virtually untapped smallmouth fisheries nearby on the lower stretches of rivers coming out of the mountains. Can't wait to try some this pattern.
I love watching you catch fish on the fly you just made!
Thank you for this, I just picked up my first Fly Rod and am going to be teaching myself to use it here soon. We had a bit of snow this morning, so as soon as its not freezing I will be out there :)
Then I want to learn to tie my own flies.
Thanks alot man! First trip with a "hometied" foam-popper resulted in a little pike! They work!
Great Vid, I have been wanting to get into fly fishing for years but live in a beach town.. I really don't know much about fresh water fishing but what you do by making your lures is a art.
Thanks! I've over 300 videos on my channel so far and am always making more!
Awesome video.I was never really interested in tying my own flies, but since the tackle shop near me doesn't have bass flies, I think I might have to start
I've used several different weight fly rods over the years and most of the videos where I'm bass fishing I'll be using either a 8 weight Okuma or my old fiberglass Browning 6 weight. I broke my Okuma last spring so I've been using my Browning since then.
Your videos are excellent! Please keep making them.
Nice fly. I've GOT to build some of those. Thanks for sharing.
I'll tell you it's a lot of fun to fly fish but you gotta get over the "hump" in learning to cast then it really gets fun!
nice work! i love making foam flies myself, and like using cheap simple aberdeen hooks often found at walmart
I'm new to fly tying - Love your videos.
Starting with these simple foam poppers is a good way to be introduced to tying.
Thanks.. It is good to show that a fly really works because many I tie don't work as well as I'd like.
I've yet to catch a pike on a top water popper.. congrats on your fly and catch!
This orange popper fly is made from 1/4 inch craft foam available from most craft stores.
Good stuff..I think I'm going to try my hand at making some to catch blue gills..nice technique..hopefully mine comes out just as smooth
Love this I am going to try to make one I am new to fly fishing and real new to fly tying
Fish often and with all types of equipment and you will learn what works best in your local area. There is no real secret to successful fishing as it comes from years of not-so-successful fishing.
Most everything come from craft stores or Walmart. Getting feathers can be difficult if looking locally but I got many of mine from Gander Mountain.
this dude is awesome...good stuff
Thanks. Great video. I love that you showed it catch some beauties too!!
Never been fly fishing..im still working on becoming a really good angler in general with spinning reels. I still haven't tried a bait-caster yet.
Beautiful
@wishihadalife90 1/4 inch craft foam available from most craft stores and even Walmart. Any foam type material will work if you glue multiple layers together. Don't worry too much about how it looks to you because that is secondary to how it looks to the fish. The profile and sound it makes is what attract the bass. This particular fly just happen to turn out pretty nice looking and it worked really good too!
Great video given me some good ideas for salt water uk bass
great video
cool, your in texas too! i live near houston. I fish lake livingston and lake conroe!
well done there...thanks
I fish Lake Somerville often it the winter and spring for whitebass and crappie...
Nice popper
Made it big time! :) You showed up on Orvis today! wo0T!
This is the second time Orvis has used this video.. I'm really happy about that..
William B Tedrick
Awesome stuff! I get a kick out of your videos, especially when I hear A Prairie Home Companion coming out of the speakers in your car :)
nice stuff
i was just wondering who makes your vice? it really nice and simple
hey thanks for showing that to us u rock and one more time thanks alot
Nice! Thanks.
simple 1/4 inch thick craft foam that comes in 8 by 11 inch sheets.
Thanks and keep your eyes on my channel there will be more videos to come.
great video found it on FTF
i love you videos i didn't mean to dislike it
Really nice - will def make some. These will kill the bluefish up here in the Northeast. Good tune too:)
Fantastic video, love how you showed some of yourself fishing with them at the end. May I ask what weight rod/line you're using for those sized bass?
thanks for the video, its great how you make the fly and then show it in action. What lake were you fishing at?
I am also new to fly tieing and fishing, and will most likely try tieng this fly, and if you have any tips about fly fishing please share them with me thanks:)
This seems like a great fly!!! What vice is that and how much it cost??would black be a good color also
@wbtedrick
can you elaborate at all on what type of foam you're using? also what you're using to cut it? just tied my first one and he's pretty ugly but i bet he'll do the trick! awesome video (s)
I'll use all type of hooks but anything will work if sized appropriately
k thanks did u just glue them together o and u rock what rod do u use
My uncle always said as long as it works it doesnt have to be expensive...
@123ttlad foam flys don't usually last long enough to worry about fading.
Super Glue is the tiers best friend....
Your Uncle and I would get along just fine ;)
It's a private lake near Bryan Texas
Hey where do you mostly get your foam for the popper heads?
The eyes are doll eyes available from most good craft stores.. The eyes come in many different sizes too.
@MastaMarcus1 How did your popper turn out?
Yes I like to prove the flys actually work!
how do you like that vice?
Also what's that little tying machine called
If you don't mind me asking, but do you find all the supplies you use at local craft stores and such or do you have to order them online?
It's good for the price ;)
Where can I purchase the foam for the fly and how do you pop the fly
what weight fly rod do you use for bass? 6? 7?
Walmart or hobby lobby or just about any craft store.
Really enjoy the Froggy Fly series. Just curious where do you find the ¼ foam. I have checked with Michael's but was not able to find any
Thanks
The 1/4 inch thick stuff is a little hard to find but I have just super-glued thinner sheets together which works just as well. Flip-flops work good too! There are so many types of foam out there to choose from that finding what you like shouldn't be difficult..
I did the glue together thing too. Great idea for the flip flops I'll have to get a few pair at a discount store. Many thanks!!
were did u get the foam
Hi, i can´t understand from which material are U using for head. Plese answer . :)
@isosexy123 I bought the vice from a little sports shop here in Bryan Texas but I'd bet you can find something similar online..
9ft Eagleclaw 5 weight
I fish alot but have never tried fly fishing is that fly durable and how does it float once it the feathers get wet??
It does tend to float lower in the water once it gets really wet but it still floats..
What kind of foam is that?
anything from a 4 to 8 weight.. depends on the fly and conditions..
Can you show how to make deer hair flies?
mr tedrick iam still having problem getting these baits to set up and not lean over I am using 5 mm foam I guess around 1/8 thick 3/4 long 1/2 high but I am only putting a strand of buck tail on it 1/0 hook I thought that hook would be small enough its real close to tail the hooks I am using are mustard o shaughnessy 3407 DT are they too big can u help me
+Jimmy Anderson try this tie ua-cam.com/video/hIj-IOkXaEM/v-deo.html and this one ua-cam.com/video/jjaR_2Lhnrw/v-deo.html both are just as effective and much easier to tie..
Man that's super super good u make it look so easy I hope to someday tie as good as you u the best thank u
Hey, what kid of camera did you use to make this video.
Canon PowerShot SX20is. I shoot most everything outdoors now with a PowerShot SX40HS and have the SX50HS for anything not on the water ;) The Canon PowerShot SX40 and up are great cameras for around $300.00.
what song is this?
Orvis picked up this video.. see www.orvis.com/news/fly-fishing/video-how-to-tie-a-simple-foam-bass-popper/
And what's the line called
@jonterhaar cheapest SGlue i can find..
In this video I'm using an 9ft Eagleclaw 5 weight flyrod.
What size hook?
This fly is tied on about a #4 but the fly can be scaled up or down to fit the situation...
How tall and long it the foam
1/2 inch tall 3/4 inch long 1/4 inch thick
Thanks
have you ever used raccoon tails for tying?
No I've not used raccoon in any fly tying. Squirrel and rabbit, deer and some pig hair is about it for me..
@b3astlyairs0ft3r98 the vice is so cheap it doesn't even have a name other then made in India.. Black and chartreuse make for a great combination..
Walmart
Background music too loud. Need to better hear you talking
Sorry Jim.. this is a older video from when I didn't know much about editing.. but it did get picked up by Orvis at one point.. made me happy...
