Sony A7IV Photo and Video Review: Am I upgrading?

Hey everyone! The Sony A7IV is FINALLY here!! We're going to be taking a look at this camera in my real world review to see how the A7IV performs out in the field. I have SO MUCH in this video today, we test out: human eye AF in photo and video, animal + bird eye AF in photo and video, we check out the A7IV body build to see what's new in the physical body, do portrait photography in the rain to see the image quality, colour rendition and sharpness. I use 3 different prime lenses for our portrait photoshoot: the GM 35mm f1.4, GM 85mm f1.4 and GM 135mm f1.8. I have some 4K video samples to share with you, I see if the A7IV overheats in video or photo mode, compare the IBIS, all the picture profiles, focus breathing compensation and see how the A7IV performs in low light for photo and video. I also answer the all important question - as a full time portrait and wedding photographer who uses the A7III, will I upgrade?
The other lenses I used in today's video include the FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS and FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS (this one I borrowed from Sony).

Agreed, I've probably watched a dozen reviews of the A7iv already and this is by far the most useful one I've seen! Sure technical specs and whatnot are woven in throughout but I really appreciate the attention to things like lowlight performance, color grading of the unedited photos, and autofocus 'stickiness.' It's like most reviews out there are answering the question of how it works, but Julia gets to the heart of "does it work?" and at the end of the day I don't care about nitty-gritty specs, I care about the quality of photos and video it produces. Great job!

I've been shooting with the Sony a7iii for almost three years now, and I will absolutely be upgrading! As a portrait and boudoir photographer who's been getting into video, the flip screen feels perfect (and what Sony has been missing), and the COLORS! Wow!
I love your videos! For real, I was looking for videos literally showing this camera working. And you do that beautifully. Those 100% crop are something else, they really set the videos apart.

I like the tones of warmish colors coming from this Model. . The hair color, the blush and lip shade has allot of warm tones and draws the eyes against the gray tones of the stone brick wall and skies. The contrast of ginger hair against the green foilage in the background and at times, complimentary colors. Excellent location for this shoot! The quality of these photos is gorgeous!

For event, wedding and portraits it's a no brainer. Probably the best camera in the price range. Such a competent Jack of all trades!
It checks so many boxes except for 4K 60p full frame, but that would cannibalize the A1 and A7Siii lines or they would bump up the price to $3000+

While I was initially bummed about the 1.5x crop factor in 4K/60, that also means I can use my old APS-C glass like my Sigma 16mm 1.4 when shooting 4K.

A7iii autofocus is already great. What really improved to me was the constrast focus map, it really should help with legacy lenses.. can’t wait

Great video :) Up to what aperture can I use the fast autofocus? With the Sony a7m3, this only went to aperture 8. I ask because I might want to use the 200-600 with the 2 compartment teleconverter, which has not been possible so far.

Another lovely real-life camera review video from you, thank you so much. My first Sony was an A7S, 1st gen. I sold that camera after two years of use mainly due to its unusable AF on video and unsatisfied color science. I've been waiting for my 2nd try for Sony cameras, and this could be it, the Sony A74. One last concern, highlight rollout on video. Do you think it is not a serious issue anymore for latest Sony cameras such as this one? Thanks!
Hi Julia thanks for the review helps alot, few question were you shooting 4k 50p 11mins :50 secs or was that 4k 60 p ? I wish they still added 120 frames per second for the occasional footage.

Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my 4K documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much

Awesome review Julia, with more results and less specs! The animal eye tracking from the tight frame of the bouncing kangaroo was just mind-blowing, especially because it was a busy scene. The AF results were also impressive for the sequence where the camera kept locked on to your eyes despite you wearing a shirt with lot of motifs which looked like eyes. The tight face crops from the model shoot revealed amazing detail and colors. I have been shooting fast action and dynamic portraits on my Nikon D500 since 2017, and have been considering an upgrade of lens/mirrorless body for a while. The A7iv and Z9 are developments which make my upgrade choices even harder :D

Your reviews and your style are great! I have an A7RIII and I started photographing riding competitions, that in winter are held indoor. In these situations the shutter sound of the A7RIII can be too loud sometimes, so I am searching for a quieter alternative. Electronic shutter is not an option for the distortions, and I don’t want to switch to A9 because high ISO is not so great.. is the A7IV mechanical shutter quieter than A7III (and A7RIII if you are familiar with it) ? Thanks a lot.

Hi!! I know this is completely unrelated to this video, but I was watching your video about post-shoot workflow. I have been trying to get a better editing system going on, but my macbook doesn't directly open the raw files unless I were to put them directly in lightroom. Do you have any advice? Do I need some secondary software?
What about comparative to the a7c? I know you were using that camera as a main for a while. Will you be trading that in for the a7iv? How does the autofocus compare between the two ?
Love the new a74 so far! 😍 that AF is freaking amazing! Well I just bought the a73 like 2months ago and as I am not a pro photographer yet, I think I will skip the update and invest some money in lenses. The a73 is still an awesome camera and way to go.
But the AF, colors and new body are killer in this new model!
Yeah it's awesome still really no need to upgrade just yet.
I agree, the A7III was a great camera for the 3 years I used it - I could shoot anything on it. So it will continue being a great camera too :)

In real life at least half of stills photographers prefer a tilting screen (better be a dual-orientation tilting screen like the Nikon Z9). But youtubers make manufacturers think everybody want a flip-out screen.
You are literally the first youtuber I know that doesn't like the flip-out screen.😂 So thank you.

The only downside of this camera for me. But I guess it still better than the previous that only tilted one way.
