      there are no cons, the only disappointment is the 33mp, because it makes no difference from the a7iii 24mp, if you want this camera for photography you’re getting scammed, those 33 mp cannot be seen and it’s only a marketing play

    For what you’re getting $2500 is a fair price . The Canon R6 is similarly priced and I think this is a better buy . I don’t use Sony anymore, but I had the A7III and A7RIII before going back to Nikon . However , this looks like a great buy . I’d have no issue purchasing the A7IV. I like the resolution bump . (II) only 6fps Uncompressed or Lossless Raw. (III) Rolling shutter issues in video and Still in silent shutter. (IV) Loud Mechanical shutter sound is worst for Press conferences photographer in quiet environment. Because of distortion silent shutter is not worth to use and worst sensor reading for electronic. (V) 8 bits for 120p. (VI) 4k60p in 1.5 crop at least it is good only 1.02 or 1.01 crop..

    Great video as always! That dust thing is such a serious issue on Sony cameras. I had my a7c for three months ended up getting a dust particle on the sensor. Try to remove it by the internal settings which didn’t work and then using a hand dust blaster which didn’t work. Two days later that same particle ended up being underneath the sensor and impossible to remove unless you dismantle the camera. It had to be sent back to Sony for repairs.

      Yikes! I once had a dust particle stuck to the sensor. The hand dust blaster didn't work. What worked was using a single strand from a very fine optical cleaning brush and carefully wiping off the dust particle so that I can then blow it off with the hand dust blaster. Worked like a charm.

    Thank you, Dan! Excellent review! I've been using the A7III since it's introduction and it is just fine for most of my photographic needs. I don't shoot video so I don't care about about all the improvement there. I do like all the improvements made to ergonomics, auto focus, sensor resolution and EVF resolution. The main reason I have not jumped at upgrading is the very thing many people are raving about -- the flip screen! I would only find that useful for the occasional portrait. I shoot mostly in landscape orientation and often at waist level for travel photography. The screen flipped out the side is awkward and impractical and I can imagine especially, if using a neck strap, downright clumsy. So far my favorite screen implementation , was the articulating screen on the A99 which also had built in GPS which I loved for travel photography. I find the cell phone connectivity for GPS, with the A7III not so reliable. Those are things no one cares about I suppose.

    I would love to know if there are things less good than it’s predecessor, the A7 III. Is the rolling shutter the same, better or worse? The A7 III did 10 frames per second, is the A7 IV less fast with SD, in lossless compressed RAW or uncompressed RAW? What about the buffer between the two? Is the screen and EVF better than the A7 III?
    I am coming from the A7 III and all the reviews sound like there are some things are worse on the A7 IV.
    Thank you!

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 роки тому +3

      So the only negatives I can think of are that yes, rolling shutter is technically slightly worse given more pixels, both were 10fps but the A7IV has more pixels so the buffer fills faster (unless you use CFexpress). Otherwise it's all positives. The screen and EVF are better than the A7III. We just had high expectations for this camera since it had been 3 years and the A7III was amazing so it fell a bit flat of those lofty expectations in a few areas which can make some things sound more negative than they actually are. Plus in those 3 years, the competition got better

    Thanks Dan for your coverage on the Sony A7IV - really appreciate it! At 13:35 you mention the A7RIV in comparison. As someone who already owns the A7SIII and A7RIV would you recommend getting the A7IV instead of the RIV for the 10bit Video (which works great with the A7SIII together), hardware/menu and most important AF improvements? 33 MP is still plenty - so that's not the most important for me.

    • @learningcameras

      If you also shoot video, I would indeed consider getting the A7IV instead of the A7RIV. If you aren't shooting video, I definitely wouldn't sell the A7RIV. I'm personally planning on selling my RIV now that I have the A7IV simply because the A7IV is good enough for me for photos and I will absolutely use the A7IV as a B camera for video

    I would LOVE to hear more about heat performance. Can you use this camera to shoot two-hour lectures or other events like live music or stage plays that could last two hours? Can I shoot a 3-hour interview without stopping? Does it overheat LESS in APS-C than it does in FF? I suspect this is the case because a smaller part of the sensor is used and also does not require 7k over sample. THANKS so much for you great videos!!!

    Dan, thanking you big time for all your latest content. I'm trying to decide between the FX3 and the A7iv. I'm jumping back in to the Photo/video world and will mostly be shooting Moto Travel/adventure footage. I suspect I'll spend more time on the video side but will still be shooting stills. I was worried about the rolling shutter and 4K60 crop on the A7iv but maybe it's not a big deal. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on which would be the best choice. Cheers from Canada.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 роки тому +1

      Appreciate that James! If you are only shooting video, the FX3 is great. I still wish it had a bit more resolution so we also had a crop mode but otherwise I love it. But if you also want to shoot photos, that's where a hybrid camera like the A7IV is a big win. Rolling shutter is only a problem with fast pans so you just need to limit those if or you will notice the rolling shutter. The 4k60 crop is livable except when shooting wide angle which is where you either need APSC lenses just for that or to only shoot 4k24 for wide angle shots

    I couldn't agree less about the shutter sound. I had an a7iii from when it came out until last week when I upgraded to the a7iv, and the second thing I loved about it after the improved grip was the solid sound and feel of the shutter! I can't think of many situations where you'd feel you'd have to use the mechanical shutter that are sensitive to the noise (unless the Happy Couple insist on tossing a basketball to each other as they run up the aisle). Hate the noise: turn it off.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 роки тому

      So you can't just "turn it off". Turning off the shutter sound means shooting electronic shutter. Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 роки тому

      Thanks! So yes, the A7IV and the 24-105 would be a perfect kit for that. Technically the Canon R6 or R5 have better stabilization if that's the BIGGEST concern, but I think that setup would be absolutely fine for doc work especially if you put the camera in a cage with a grip to give you some better handling. The A7IV has an "active mode" for some additional stabilization which I will use with longer lenses since my coffee infused hands shake like crazy lol

      That's with compressed RAW because with uncompressed or lossless compressed, you can only shoot 6fps and not 10fps. You could definitely do compressed RAW to a CFexpress and full size JPEG to the SD card and shoot 100's of shots most likely

Like I read before, on another post, "If you wanted the same video features as the A7SIII, it would be an A7SIII. Sony's not going to intentionally curtail the sales of another higher priced camera in their line up. (losing $$$$$) At least, not intentionally.

      So I'd make the argument that the A7IV needs to be a good "hybrid" camera and thus needs 4k60 full frame, especially since Canon already has it. The A7SIII is too low MP to have some features like oversampling, photo resolution, and crop modes, but the A7IV would have been the perfect hybrid camera for those who need both if it had this. The 4k60 would still be pixel binned and would not be as good quality as the A7SIII. Plus, I will absolutely put pressure anytime I see a company intentionally do something to cripple the camera that isn't a "technical" or "hardware" limitation. We did the same thing with Canon and the R5 and R6 which overheated with timers like crazy. Thankfully the pressure worked and the cameras improved with firmware as much as Canon could do without a hardware change.

    2:10 ...set up to silent shutter ..its easy

      Might not want to. This sensor has a slow readout so you will see banding, variable exposures, or rolling shutter with artificial lights or fast moving subjects. There are only like 4 cameras you should actually use silent shutter with and this isn't 1 of them.

    From what I've seen, the downsides of the A7iv affect photographers the most. As someone who mostly shoots video, I'm not bothered by the same things. If the 4K 60 crop really bothers you, why not make a video demonstrating this very issue? Go to a location that you commonly shoot 4K 60 at, and show us how the crop affects your choices. It would be more helpful than just talking about it.

      He did. There was a car and he showed the crop factor in the review video.

      @@timpolster So what. Why not show what he would have to do to reframe the shot? If he has room to move, he can easily reframe the shot with the crop considered. That's more useful than just showing the cropped shot.

      @@Pfagnan Well...dude...unless you're shooting in a tiny room, you can move your body to a better position. Yes? You're getting a sharper image than the A7Siii for $1,000 less. Does anyone take that into account? Or is whining more fun?

      @@AllThingsFilm1 Did you watch the review video? I guess I am coming from the point of view that any video on UA-cam is offered to you and telling somebody how to do it begs the phrase to "do it better yourself". He states that stepping back to reframe is an option but not always a solution. You say he is whining and I see you as complaining. I appreciate the time and effort to make the videos and show the new camera. Even if there is financial gain might be the motivation.

    For 4K 60, can you just use APSC lens and still get full 4K 60 since it's cropped?

    • @JamminHyaku
      @JamminHyaku 2 роки тому

      Yes, its the sensor that gets cropped, so the lens you use has no effect

      It's still not full frame but you can use APSC lenses in 4k60 crop

    Thank you so much, Dan! You are always so thorough. One question… on my A7iv (just got it), I notice more noise (and some weird color shifting) in high iso raw files (6400 -10000) than in the 33mp jpegs. Seems like more noise than my A7iii. I was wondering if this was simply due to the Lightroom plug-in, or perhaps I haven’t set the camera up correctly. Hmm. Literally opened the files for the first time yesterday.
